Four Hearts And One Mate - Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Damon.

I was outside her door, I heard her voice, she was muttering in her sleep.

I couldn’t take another step from where I stood because he was there with her, Soren was in the room with her.

He had promised to stay with her, I dragged a step back, I stared at my hands, it was stained with blood, I hid them behind me and hurried into my room along the hallway and slammed the door shut behind me.

I went directly into the bathroom, and stripped the clothes off my body and turned on the showers. I watched as the blood washed down off my body, and my hand but didn’t wash the fact that I did something to the maid that attended to her.

I gave her instructions on what to do and I didn’t trust her to let her go just like that, rumors could spread around the pack, and Soren didn’t know either what happened to her, and that her wound had covered up.

I stayed for over twenty minutes under the shower, before I left the bathroom, and then I dressed up but I wasn’t getting dressed to sleep.

I strolled over to my study room and turned on the light to start work late on a project in the pack.

I heard a knock on the door and I lifted my gaze from the paperwork and stared at the door.

“Come in. Pete.”

The door opened slowly, and he came in. He leaned against the door with his hands behind him. “Soren isn’t going home tonight. He’s staying with her till she wakes.”

“How is he going to handle Alpha Rowan?”

“Maybe he’s not afraid of going back to being a rogue.”

“Rowan won’t even let him go back to being a rogue. He would kill him.” I said and averted my gaze from his face. I heard his footsteps as he came closer, and stood before my table.

“If you are going to sit then sit, or else you can leave. I have some work to do.”

“I thought you were going to order me to get out.” He chuckled silently.

“Were you able to see her? How—“

“She was sleeping.” He cut me off before I could complete my sentence. “And I’ve watched you for the last minute, your eyes have been fixed on a particular line, and haven't moved from there. You looked focused but wasn’t entirely focused on the paperwork.”

I dropped the pen in my hand on the table, and swiveled the chair around in silence.

“Worried about her?” He asked.

“I know a thing about her, and sometimes it feels as if I don’t even know her.” I wanted to avoid saying this directly, but when I came home and didn’t find her, I was worried something bad happened to her.

He pulled out a chair, and shoved the paperwork on my desk, then he sat and placed his elbow on the table, staring at me closely.

“She was supposed to be safe in our pack but this happened to her. If she can’t be safe here, where else can she be safe? The wolf that attacked was from our pack, did you search?”

“Yes, Alpha. I went back with some guard, so we can get him from there and do a background search on him. When we got there, the body of the wolf wasn’t there anymore.”

I tapped my finger on the table. “I expected it.”

“Then why didn’t you do anything about it Alpha, are you just going to let him go?”

“I had cut off his thumb.

His jaw dropped, and he was quick to recollect himself.

“I was stupid. Alpha. I disappointed you, I should have done something when I saw the shadow, I should’ve thought about it, that the corpse would be taken away. I’m so stupid.”

“That’s why I was there, to cover your flaws.” I picked up the pen again, and brought the paperwork back in front of me, and Peterson just stared in silence.

“You will take the paperwork to the pack house tomorrow and some documents for the commencement of the project in the pack.”

“They would be scared to start anything now because of the rumors of a promising war…” He twitched his lips when he said that.

“I have already proved it.”

“Shouldn’t we postpone it for a while and let the Pack settle in a bit before doing anything.” He suggested, and I sighed.

“We just had to assure them, there won’t be any of that happening in the pack.”

“It’s going to be difficult but I will give it a try.”

“You know that’s what I want to hear.”

“Alpha.” He called to get my attention back at him, and I blinked my eyes at him.

“Soren asked about the maid.”

“Why was he curious about that?”

“I didn’t know, he said he had something he wanted to ask, he was being suspicious.”

“Then he should come to me if there’s anything. Don’t say anything to him about what happened tonight, and nobody has to know except the three of us. It seems we can’t trust anyone, even the ones in our pack.” I leaned my back against the chair again, and stared at the wall.

“I didn’t say a word to him.”

I nodded without staring at him.

“I think he’s…nothing Alpha. I will be outside if you need me. Should I get you coffee?” He asked.

“I don’t think I need that tonight.

I heard the sound of his chair as he pushed them backward, and the sound of his footsteps heading out of the room, and when he closed the door.

I let out a deep breath. I had to find the wolf that did that to Aria, and how was she able to kill a wolf with just a stick.

I have never been able to do that, and did something like that. It just won’t get off my head.

I closed my eyes, I wanted it to just be for a moment, until I was woken up with a startle.

Chapter 40

Damon.

Someone touched me and shook me lightly, whispering my name, and I woke up with a startle. My heart started to pound so fast, as if it was about to jump right out of my chest.

“Alpha.” The voice called, I glanced my hand tightly on my chest, and I was going to fall whatever I was sitting on, but the strong arm held me and forced me back on the seat.

“Open your eyes, Alpha. I will get your drugs, get a grip of yourself please.” He said, and I forced my red eyes open, my heart hitting against my chest so hard.

I glanced around where I was quickly, and it was the study room. Peterson was squatted, and was looking around for something.

“Is everything okay?” Someone asked outside the door.

“Yes, give me a minute, the study is a bit messed up.” Peterson replied because I couldn’t speak, and was struggling to calm my heart, and control my breathing.

“I can’t see it, Alpha.” Peterson muttered, and stared at me. “Try and follow my breathing. In and out.” He stood in front of me, he looked scared more than I did.

I shook my head at him. “Just talk.” I forced the words out of my mouth.

“About what?”

“Anything.”

“Remember when we first met, we met at a gathering in the pack, it was a mating ceremony, I was seven. I came with my brother, he didn’t know I came with him, because I wasn’t to be at the mating ceremony, we were too young to be there. And when he found out, he was going to hit me. I ran and hid under a table and found you hiding there too…” He began, and I gripped tight to the table, and started to breathe slowly, he kept talking, and I chuckled at the memory he shared, and the sound of my heart pounding started to reduce.

I took in a deep breath, leaned against the chair and exhaled.

He stopped talking and exhaled in relief, then he chuckled. “Again?”

“And you act each time like it’s the first time.”

“Because I kept forgetting why I couldn't find your pills.”

“Can’t remember where I kept it but it could be somewhere in the bedroom.” I replied, and breathed out again.

“Alpha, it's a panic attack, it could…”

“I have been handling it quite well.”

“I doubt that.” He frowned.

“Is everything okay…?” A voice interjected from the outside, and I stared at the door.

“Who is there?”

“It’s Soren.” He ruffled his hair. “It’s morning, Alpha, and I think he’s leaving and she woke up. He probably has something to say to you.” Peterson said. “Glad I was able to come in first and check up on you, you had a dream?”

“The usual.” I replied flatly and didn’t want to give more details about it.

I have had panic attacks since I was little and when my mother died, it became worse. I became so frightened of the man that I called my father, the attacks became frequent with just a glimpse of him. I had to run away from home but he found me…

I shook the thought of my head, and tapped my fingers on the table. “Let him in, I will see him before he leaves.”

Peterson nodded and stepped out of the study room to get Soren, he stayed for over a minute, and I knew the reason Peterson did that was to give me some time to get myself back together.

He knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

He came in and looked around the study room before he made his way to the empty seat in front of me. “Is everything okay with you?”

“Everything is fine, the study was a bit messy. Have a seat.”

“Thank you.” He pulled out the chair from under the desk, and sat down.

“Peterson told me you were here all night, I didn’t want to bother you and just leave but I thought it wouldn't be right if I had just left and there’s another reason I decided to wait.”

I placed my hand on the table and listened to what he had to say.

“She has woken up, I guess.”

“Yes, she’s been up for over an hour.” Soren remarked and stared down at the table, his gaze was on my hand.

“You are meeting with Alpha Rowan when you get back.”

“Yes, the reason why I wanted to speak with you.”

“I’m listening.” I rubbed a finger over my jawline, and swerved the chair I was seating away from his view.

“I realized that Aria needs me, and everything that I am doing is because of her, and bringing news about the Silverwolf Pack to you and Alpha Rowan. So, it might get messy when I get back to the pack, and I don’t know what Alpha Rowan had in mind when I returned to him, if he threw me out, would you take me in?” He asked, and I moved the chair to face him, my hand dropped down to the table.

“Will you?” He added.

“Depends on whose side you are on.”

“I’m with Aria.”

I smirked.

“You’ve to be one the side of the Alpha don’t you think? Aria is just a member of my pack, though not legally accepted yet but we are working on that.”

“I know what you mean but I don’t trust you that much yet, our path would never have crossed if Aria wasn’t involved. I might not know anything else but I do know that you are protecting her, and helping her. You can send me out of the pack after Aria achieves everything that she wants, and no longer living in fear, you can send me out of your pack.”

“What if Rowan doesn’t send you out of his pack, and decides to make sure of your skills to spy on me instead?” I asked and folded my arms on the table.

“What are you going to do then?”

Chapter 41

Aria.

I woke up with a splitting headache, and my eyes went around the place I was, I was lying on something soft and comfortable and then my eyes caught the chandelier hanging on the ceiling.

I wanted to pull my hand away but then I noticed that someone was beside me, his head was down and he held my hand.

I adjusted myself properly with a slight groan, and I touched his silky hair with my other hand, and wondered how I was able to get home and what happened afterward.

I knew who was beside me because I was able to recognize him through his scent, why did he come back? I thought he had gone back to the pack, did he come back because of me.

He lifted his head, and I took my hand away from his hair.

“Aria, you are awake.” His hand went over my hair, and he let go of our hand, I was left with a strange emptiness when his hand let go of mine.

I smiled at him, and tried to sit up but he held me down, and made me lay down back on the bed.

“Don’t try to get up yet.” He warned, and rubbed his hands down my arm. “You were badly hurt last night. I remembered seeing your clothes covered in blood.” He said and then I remembered the wolf that attacked me, I wondered what happened when he fell on my body, but something strange had happened to me before then, and I wasn’t myself for a moment.

He sighed and held my hand. “Are you feeling better?”

Strangely, I didn’t feel any pain at all and I knew I was wounded but I wasn’t feeling any pain in any part of my body, I could see some plaster and bandages on parts of my body.

I nodded at Soren because I didn’t know what to say to him.

“Why are you here?” I asked. “You should have gone back to the pack, and not come back.”

“I heard you were missing, Peterson told me about it, I had to take a turn back here and help with the search and they found you in the woods. Alpha Damon brought you back home with Peterson.” He explained.

“And you stayed all night?”

“It’s the least I can do, Aria. You don’t expect me to leave you alone, do you?” He squeezed my hand in his hold and gently placed them beside me.

“I couldn’t leave you alone. I had to stay with you.”

“Don’t you think about yourself Soren!” The tone of my voice was a bit higher than intended.

He did the same thing when he had opened the prison gate for me to get out and he had obviously hurt Rowan’s men, and Alpha Rowan wasn’t someone who would easily forgive him for what he did. He was very manipulative and now he hadn’t gone for the meeting he had with him.

He stayed here instead of the Silverwolf Pack, and if Alpha Rowan found out he wasn’t in the pack and he was here, he wouldn't go easy on him.

“I do. When I think of myself, I think of you Aria. That’s why I did that, and even if I had been in that situation again, I would do the same thing.”

“Do you want to throw your life away? Alpha Rowan gave you a second chance, don’t throw it all away.” I said slowly.

“Are you pushing me away?”

“I don’t want you to keep taking such risks for me, I don’t want you to get hurt because of me. Soren.”

“That’s left for me to decide, not you.” He stressed, and then stood up and ran his fingers over his hair.

“I can handle Alpha Rowan, and I told you, I am not scared to be a rogue again.”

“He could do something worse than just making you be a rogue. You know how difficult he is…”

He spun around and placed a finger on his chest. “Are you worried about me?” He smiled.

I huffed. “You know I’m worried about you, Soren.”

He chuckled, and heaved a sigh of relief. “Then that’s a good start. I wanted to wait till you’re awake before I leave the pack.”

“Speak to Alpha Damon before you leave.”

“Why?” I asked, and raised a questioning brow at her. She placed her feet on the ground and stood up, and made her way down towards me.

“So he can be of help in case Alpha Rowan has to do anything to you. Alpha Damon can step in and take you into his pack.”

“Do you want me close to you?” A teasing smile came on his face, and he placed his hand on the side of my cheek.

“I’m trying to help.” I said softly.

“I know but you don’t have to worry too much about me.”

“You stayed with me. I should worry that much.”

“Anyone could’ve done that.” I knew he was trying to push the words aside.

“But you are not anyone.” I stared at him, and he wanted to speak, but he seemed to be lost of words, so he pulled me into his arms instead, and kissed the top of my head.

“I wanted to see you safe before I left the pack. I should head back now. I will try to reach out soon.”

I lifted my head from his chest, and stared at his face. “You’ve to come back.”

“I will be back.”

“You promise.”

“I promise, little fairy.”

I faked a glare at him, and he chuckled, and pulled me back into his arms, and I wrapped my arms around his back.

“I don’t know what happened to the wolf that attacked you but I think Alpha Damon and his Beta are taking care of that. You can ask him anything, I think he will be able to give you some answers.” He whispered beside my ears.

I nodded, and then he withdrew from me.

“I will be back.” He promised, and then let go of my hand, I watched him walk away from him.

Hoping he would come back as he said, but a week passed, and I never got to hear from Soren since the moment he walked out of my room.

Never saw him, never heard of him.

But he promised me he would be back, so I kept waiting for him to come back as he promised.

Chapter 42

Soren.

I wasn’t able to sneak back into the pack as I do, my hideout was found out, and Kade was there standing with two of the warriors, his hands were on his hips and he had a hard look on.

“You kept me waiting.” He said when he saw me. “…where have you been sneaking off too, running around corners with the borders like your playground and doing whatever you like isn’t it?” He asked and I stood before him.

“You weren’t in the pack last night, where were you?”

“You are not going to have me locked up are you, Kade?”

“I only work according to the order of the Alpha, and if he wants you to be locked up, I would have to do just that and I don’t think you will be able to avoid that.” He said flatly, and gestured to the two soldiers beside him. “Take him.”

“You don’t even know what happened and why I stayed out that late?” I asked as the soldiers grabbed my hands and forced behind me, and I felt a handcuff around my wrist, then they pushed me forward.

“Am I not a criminal, Kade, why would you treat me this way? You don’t have to—“

“It’s orders from the Alpha.” He cut me off, and looked away from me. I walked closer to him, and was beside him, he didn’t spare me a glance.

“Kade, it’s me. Soren.”

“I know.” The look on his face remained the same.

“Then take these cuffs off my hands and let me walk properly.”

He halted, and then exhaled, he grabbed my hand, I winced as he held them, and took the handcuffs off my hand. I rubbed my wrist when my hands were free, and glanced at the silver restraining cuff, he tucked them into his pocket.

He waved a hand at the soldiers, and they slowed their pace and walked slowly behind us.

“You found out about my hideout, have you been looking out the whole night?”

“Alpha Rowan wanted me to find you, he thought you ran away from the pack but I knew you were going to come back because it wasn’t your first time sneaking around.”

“I was with Aria, she went missing.”

He came to a sudden halt, and the look on his face changed immediately, was it anger, worried, scared, longing? The look in his eyes was more of an angry look than anything else.

“That’s why I went back to the pack, I was already coming back here, I got a call from the Beta that she went missing but she was found.”

“How was she?” His voice softened, and then he let out a deep shaky breath, his finger ran through his hair. “How is Aria doing?”

“She was a lot better when I left.”

“Was she wounded? Was there a bruise? Did they call a doctor on her?” He rasped, and all I could do was nod at him.

“It was a maid, and not a doctor.”

“Why would a maid attend to her wound?” He sounded angry as he asked.

“They said she was once a nurse, but after she treated Aria, I never saw her till I left the house. I knew it was strange but I didn’t know what to do, and I was within their territory and Aria told me she felt a lot better when she woke up. I couldn’t leave her alone with them while she was unconscious, that’s why I stayed, and came home when she woke up.”

“Aria isn’t safe there.” He concluded. “…and Alpha Damon couldn’t even keep her safe, he couldn’t even protect her, then why did he take her away from here? I would have been able to protect while she was here. I guess he had left her alone, probably wasn’t caring for her enough.” He clenched his fist at his side.

“Is this how he intends to keep her safe? He should have never allowed her to get hurt.” His eyes darkened, and his jaw was tightened. He started to march ahead to the pack house, and I followed closely beside him.

I didn’t know if it was right for me to say that to him but I didn’t want to keep it away from him, I thought he deserved to know what happened to her.

I know he was always curious about how she was faring, and some of the time, he didn't know how to ask me about it.

“I’m going to take her away from him, I will make sure I do that even if it’s the last time I do.” I heard him grumble under his breath. He stopped suddenly and turned to me.

“Why did he take her away? Why? And allowed her to get hurt under his watch? In his pack.” His chest heaved.

He was pained.

“What about the wolf that attacked her?”

“I don’t know, they were tipped lips, and won’t say a word about what happened to the wolf, and how they found her. I spoke with the Alpha but he said nothing about it.” I told and he groaned.

“Alpha Damon.” He started to walk again, and I sighed, and followed him.

“I had second thoughts before, I thought he could protect her and tried not to get bothered but I was wrong, this proves it.”

I said nothing, and just watched him, cursed inwardly, clutching and unclutching his fist.

He stopped when we got to the pack house, he spun around and made eye contact with me. “I won’t lose Aria to Alpha Damon, so whatever will be the outcome of the meeting with the Alpha, you should make up your mind but you know Soren that it was us before Alpha Damon came into the picture.”

“And you should acknowledge the fact that things are changing, and nothing is the same anymore, just like you’ve changed.”

“You have no idea what I’ve been through…”

I scoffed. “When it’s about that, you haven’t gone through enough.” I brushed my shoulders past his, and walked into the pack house. Alpha Rowan was in his office and that was where I had to meet him.

The soldiers forced me down on my knees beside him, he was seated on his chair, he had a glass of wine in his hand which he was sipping from slowly.

Kade came in afterwards, and leaned against the wall at the side of the office.

“Where did you go?” He asked as he took a sip. “I was informed you were nowhere in the pack.”

“I went out to the woods, I went hunting.”

He dropped the glass on the table. “You don’t look like you went hunting.” He snorted, “Can a rogue kill another rogue?”

“It happens a lot.” I said.

He hummed. “Is that your excuse?”

“You are lying to me, and you think I won’t know about it. Hit him.” He said the last sentence to the soldiers holding me, but they hesitated in touching me and that seemed to have agitated him. He turned to Kade, he looked a bit shocked at his last sentence.

“Are you going against my orders?” He asked the soldiers when he looked away from Kade.

“No, Alpha.” The stuttered and wanted to hit me with their first but then he chuckled and held out his hand to them.

“You don’t even look scared.” I smiled and bent over to look at me. “You were in Damon’s pack weren’t you?”

“No.” I lied to his face again.

“Then where were you?”

“In the woods.”

“And you weren’t able to come when I called, did you get trapped in there?”

“I lost my way.”

“And you are going to continue lying while keeping a straight face? You are something else Soren. You were a rogue, you can’t get lost. Maybe other rogues could but not you, you know the woods more than anyone else. So don’t tell me cock and bull stories. I won’t buy that. Take him to the prison, and deal with him till he confesses when he has been.”

“He was with Alpha Damon.” Kade spoke out, and I yelled his name.

“He was in his pack.”

Alpha Rowan stared at me, his eyes glowered at me.

“Take him away, I will be the one to deal with him myself. I thought you would’ve been grateful that I helped you and gave you a second chance to live and you want to misuse it, I should probably take it away since you want to prove useless to me. Take him out to my dungeon.”

“Alpha.” Kade called but he waved Kade off with his hand.

“I know what to do with him.” He turned his back against me, and drank from the glass of wine.

“Alpha Damon is an enemy of my pack now, and you cross pass, and that’s a mistake you made Soren. I’m going to correct it for you.” He twirled around, and his cold gaze met my face.

“I love the look in your eyes, the angry look.”

When he said that, Kade tilted his head to my direction but I didn’t spare him a glance. I was angry he had said instead of him to allow me to handle the situation.

“Send Lucian for me.”

“And Soren?” Kade asked.

“Have him locked up, and I will decide what I should do to him, if I should keep him or waste him.”

Chapter 43

Aria.

It’s been three days since the incident at the Pack, the mansion has been quiet and every time I see Peterson, I asked him if he had heard from Soren, and the answer I get every time from him was negative.

And I didn’t know I would be able to reach him either, he told me not to worry about Soren, that no news means good news, and I wanted to believe it or rather hold onto that for a while.

“…You are making Alpha Damon worry about you. I thought you could take care of yourself, don’t disturb yourself with him.” Peterson had told me, I wanted to challenge him, but arguing with him wasn’t going to prove anything.

“I don’t control what your Alpha feels.”

“You do. He wasn’t this unstable until you came to the pack, and you don’t want to know whose fault it was…”

“I was attacked.”

“We are working on that.” He responded, and walked away from me.

That was the only time I heard from him, and every time he was in the mansion, I didn’t want to have any conversation with him.

I didn’t know why he hated me.

Why did he find fault in everything that I said and did?

And when I decided to meet with Damon in his study room, he told his Beta that he didn't want to see him, and that Peterson should ask me to leave.

The only thing I felt was as if I was forcing things, and they didn’t want me here. Sometimes he made me feel different and most times, Damon made me feel worse.

I went back to my room and cried. I didn’t come out of the room the next day, and then today, I was going to stay in my room and not leave.

Peterson had come in earlier, and said I was doing all of that to get Alpha Damon’s attention, and wanted him to come to me.

Part of me knew that was true, I wanted to know if he was going to come to me or not.

“Are you going to stay there? He’s not going to come; he went to work at the pack house, you better come out of your room and eat.”

I had locked the door from the inside because he wasn’t able to get in.

“Why don’t you go away? I don’t want to see your face.” I replied to him from the inside.

He knocked on the door. “Too bad you are stuck in the same pack with me.” He paused, and then he said. “Open up.”

“Leave!” I half yelled at him.

There was a knock on the door which I ignored, I lay on the bed without moving an inch from there. The knock was persistent, but I did nothing and simply pretended like I didn’t hear the sound of someone’s fist banging against my door.

“I’m coming in.” I heard the sound of his voice and felt it on my stomach. I thought it was Peterson that was on the door, and didn’t he say, he was at work at the Pack house.

Why was he here?

I resisted the urge to jump up from the bed, and just lay there as if it was nothing.

He pushed the door open.

I thought I had the door locked, how was he able to open it?

I heard his footsteps as he approached the bed and I didn’t look at him.

“I heard you haven’t been eating.”

“Why do you care?” I snapped.

He took a deep breath. “I’m sure you don’t want me to force you to eat.”

“You have been ignoring me for the past few days, keep doing that.”

“I had my reasons.”

I lifted my head from the bed and scoffed. “So you admit that you’ve been ignoring me?”

“I…I..”

I stood up from the bed and walked past him to the door, but he grasped my hand and pulled me back to him.

“Can you hear me out?”

I snorted and yanked my hand away from his grip. “What do you have to say to me, you literally shut the door on my face when I came to you!” The sound of my voice raised a pitch because I was angry at him for what he did for the past few days.

“I didn’t mean to…” His voice trailed off.

“You didn’t?” I snorted again, and folded my arms underneath my breath. “Just keep pretending as you have always done, that I am not here and you don’t care what happened to me and you don’t want to be in the same space with me.”

“Is that what you think?”

“That’s what you made me think.” I retorted, and he kept quiet.

“The maid said you weren’t eating, and I wanted to know why you decided to starve yourself.”

“Because the owner of the house doesn’t want me here any longer.” I shrugged.

“I never said that.”

“You didn’t have to because your actions speak louder than your words.”

His eyes narrowed down at me. “My action?”

I rolled my eyes at him. “You knew something happened to me that night I was attacked and you kept quiet about it, even when I asked you about the wolf that came after me.”

“I thought you were the one who didn’t want me getting involved with you.”

I frowned at his words. “I never wanted that.”

He sighed, and rubbed his hand over his pants helplessly as if he didn’t know what to do with him.

“Do you want me here or not?” I demanded, his eyes went to my face, and he looked startled at my question.

“I want you here.” He answered.

“Do you need me?”

“I want you and I need you.”

“Then why do you make me feel like you don’t want me?” I didn’t know I was going to say this to him, but it was coming out of my mouth. I hated that he pushed me away, and then acted like he didn't know what he did to me.

“…make me feel it. Damon.” I added.

His eyes darkened as he stared at me. He closed the distance between us while taking just two steps. He pulled me to himself with his hand at the back of my head. It happened in a swift motion, and I was standing close to him while he was towering over me.

His lips touched mine gently, as if asking for permission as his lips embraced mine.
