Chapter 14
Kade.
“Is there another reason why you want us to move?” My father asked, he went to take a seat beside mom on the chair, he handed over a glass of water to her.
“Dad, we can’t keep talking about you, you know the reason why we should leave. I think it’s better if we do, Mom hasn’t healed either since we lost Abby!”
“Kade, that's enough.” He spoke quietly.
“But you know that’s the truth and because since that day you’ve never asked me how I felt, Mom just never spoke about it, we tried to forget that it happened in the pack and nobody knew where Abby was. Why did you think I trained so hard to be part of the warrior in the pack?”
He kept quiet, I paced behind them, because neither of them were saying a word.
“Why do we have to stay, we can move from the pack and maybe heal from the past, staying here will only bring memories.”
“You never spoke about this before.” Dad muttered, and exhaled deeply. “We’ve been here since it happened, why do we have to move now?”
“I thought there would be a change but it never was, Mom and you, including me, we never changed. We just remained in the spot. I can’t even remember the last time I heard Mom’s voice.”
I hit my hand against the back of the chair.
“And you think moving from our pack to the Nocturnal Wolf Pack would be better, their Alpha is no better than Rowan.” He hissed, and looked away from me. “How can I be so sure it’s not because of something else you want us to move?”
“I didn’t expect you to trust me.”
He scoffed, and clasped his hand over mom’s.
“But I don’t want us to stay here anymore.”
“You want us to forget memories about Abby? Is that what you want?”
“It won’t make us forget it, it would only take away the bad memories of losing her here in this pack.”
“If you’ve done your duty as a brother we won’t have lost her!” Dad pointed an accusing finger at me.
I ruffled my hair and breathed out deeply.
“It’s my fault, that’s why I want to take responsibility for keeping you both safe. I’m working my transfer to the pack, and I will have no choice but to take you both with me, then I will keep an eye on you.”
“No!” Dad snapped.
“We won’t go to the Nocturnal Wolf Pack, we would go to any other pack except that pack.”
“Can the Alpha help us to find Abby?” I heard Mom’s shaken voice, she grabbed onto Dad’s hand. It's been so long since I heard her speak, I didn’t know why I felt so relieved when I heard her voice.
“He’s a bad Alpha.” Dad tried to persuade her from the thought.
I went to Mom and squatted in front of her.
“What if he helps us, would you come with me?” I asked in a calm voice.
She shook her head vigorously at me.
“Abby was with you when she went missing, you did nothing, I wouldn’t go with you.”
I dropped my hands to my side before I could touch her. She turned away from me, and faced her husband.
She still lived in that moment, and they didn’t care about me at all.
Sometimes I wonder if I was truly their son with the way they treated me.
“So where should we go?”
“Some other pack, a small pack, quiet and peaceful. We won’t go to Nocturnal Pack.” Dad was adamant.
I nodded and stood up. “I have heard, and I will talk to the Alpha, if we have to move to another pack, I would have to resign here in my duty and look for another pack that will accept us. Is that okay?”
“Yes.” Dad answered, and Mom leaned into his arms.
I stood up and made my way to the door.
“Where are you going?” He asked.
“I have to speak to the Alpha about it, I will be home before dinner but…” I muttered as I held the door knob. “Have you ever for once considered what I feel? How much this means to me, and you just want me to give up on all of it, have you ever considered me for once? Have you ever put me in your thoughts, was I ever there? Why do I have to sacrifice everything just to make up for the past? If I get to Nocturnal Pack, there’s a high chance that I would get back my work as part of the warrior but you care not.”
He averted his gaze, and I went out of the house.
If I couldn’t go to Nocturnal Pack, I wouldn’t be able to be close to Aria, we would be apart.
It wasn’t part of my plan, and I wanted to keep my parents close too. When I met Aria, she was the one who had made me feel heard for once, and seen. She came as a glimmer of light into my life where I had felt so lost in a dark forest, she was the light that lit up my path and brought me back home.
She was that light.
“I want to speak with the Alpha.”
“He’s currently out of office.” The guard in front of the pack house said.
“Out of office?”
“Yes. You can speak with his Beta.”
“Where is he?”
“Behind you.” The voice of Liam, Rowan’s enforcer, said behind me, he was Rowan’s right hand man, though he was rarely seen, he was always on an appointment Alpha Rowan had given him because he would do anything to maintain the power that Rowan holds.
I spun around, and stared at his non smiling face.
“Kade.”
“Beta.”
“It’s been a while.”
“Sure it is, why are you here?”
“I want to have a word with the Alpha.” I stated, and crossed my hand at my back.
“Is it about your transfer from the pack?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“Alpha Rowan won’t allow that, we can’t lose someone like you in these critical times.”
“It’s more about my parents.”
“When Alpha Rowan gets back, we would do everything to make them comfortable.”
“It doesn’t work that way Beta.”
“Then they will leave without you.”
“They have no one else except me. I can’t leave them alone, I am all they have left.”
He tapped his feet. “Nonetheless, I won’t allow it.”
I sighed. “I would like to speak with the Alpha when he comes back. Please do well to pass my message. I will be back.”
I turned to leave but his voice stopped me.
“Kade. You cannot leave the pack.”
Chapter 15
Aria.
“I will take her home now, Mrs Smith.” I was back at the desk of the receptionist, and Peteson was beside me.
“Send my regards to your Alpha.” Mrs Smith muttered, Peterson bowed, and turned to leave the hospital.
I followed him to the car, and we left.
Throughout the ride we were silent, I caught him stealing glances at me at intervals. Probably had something to say but wasn’t saying it.
“Do you feel any better?” He eventually said when we were close to the house. “She’s a good doctor.”
I nodded.
“She knew I didn’t have a wolf.”
He shrugged. “Everyone could sense that, if your wolf is absent we all know.”
“You know I don’t have one.”
He stared at me through the mirror in front of him in the driver’s seat. “I thought you everyone knows, I’m not left out of it.”
I let out a deep breath, and faced the window.
“That only explains why you had so many scars, you won’t be in and out of the hospital if you had a wolf, it could have saved you a lot and Alpha won’t have been dragged into your mess.”
I snapped my head at him. “Is that what you’ve against me?”
“I have nothing against you Aria.”
I scoffed. “Obviously you do, you just said that.”
“I was just saying.”
“Basically because I had no wolf, your Alpha came in to help me, else he would have left me alone.”
His hands tightened against the wheel as he drove.
“It’s only for a while before I leave him.”
“Oh…” He chuckled. “…you think you can actually leave Alpha Damon, do you know exactly what it means to have signed a contract? You can’t just break it, and go back on your words. When he says you belong to him now, you do belong to him.”
The car screeched to a sudden halt and without a second thought. I stepped out of it, annoyed, and slammed the door behind me, hard.
Alpha Damon was outside the front porch, I bowed slightly and walked past him into the house, not saying a word to him.
Then, I stopped.
I took a turn, and walked back to him, he was still outside the door with Peterson.
“Because you helped me that means I belonged to you? Is that what you see me as an item, something that you owned. I will pay you back for everything that you did!” I screamed at him.
He was taken aback by my words.
“I…I…”
“And lastly…” I had cut him off without letting him speak. “I will leave your house!”
I stormed out of their midst, and took the stairs to my room.
I dropped my bag on the floor and slumped on the bed. Did he tell everyone that because he helped me, I was his own property?
He was unbelievable.
Shortly after a knock came on my door. “Aria.”
“It isn’t locked.” I replied grumpily.
The door opened and he stepped in, he shut it, and leaned against it.
“What was that about?” Alpha Damon asked calmly.
“You heard everything that I said.
He exhaled. “Did your treatment go well?”
I nodded, still had a frown plastered on my face.
“Did she ask you to come back?”
I nodded again.
“For what?”
“I needed some nutrients.”
He chuckled, and took a step away from the door. He stopped when he was two feet away from me.
“So why do you have a sulking face?”
I huffed. Like he had no idea why I looked that way.
“I don’t own you, Aria. All I did was help you. Maybe that’s what the role I was made to play in your life. Helping you. You are your own person, and a unique she-wolf.”
“I don’t have a wolf.”
“You’ve to stop lying to yourself, you know you do. I can sense the pressure of your wolf when I’m this close to you.” He took another step closer, and lowered himself to my height, making his face a bit closer to mine. A finger of his touched above my left breast. “She’s right there waiting for you to let her free.”
“How can I do that?” I mumbled and he took his finger away.
“Only you know.”
“And what if you stop helping me?” I asked.
“I told you I won’t. That you can use me as long as you want and I will keep helping if you ever need anything.”
“What do you want in return? Alpha Damon, everyone knows you’re good with bargains, and always get what you want and you don’t do a free service.”
A smile stretched out on his face.
“So tell me what do you want?”
“That you stay here and promise to eat with me every time.”
“That’s it?” I blinked my eyes at him.
“Were you expecting something else?” The corner of his lips curled.
I looked away from him.
“I..I wasn’t.” I sluttered.
He smiled and straightened himself. “I will ask Peterson to apologize to you, he shouldn’t have said that to you.”
“He just doesn’t like me.”
“I don’t think he likes anyone.”
“Then, he’s just like you.”
“He’s a good wolf if you get to know him, and since you’ll be staying here for a while, you should probably get along.”
“I don’t like his red hair.”
“He had been blonde before, do you prefer that?”
I laughed because I hadn’t expected him to say that. Peterson was just being weird, and that was just it.
I stopped laughing when I noticed he was staring at me.
“What is it?”
He shook his head. “You look very beautiful with your laugh.”
I suddenly felt tongue tied and didn’t know what to say. Without another word, he turned and left the door.
I was angry with him earlier but now, I had no idea what I was feeling at this moment. He has a way of messing around with my emotions and he does that so easily.
I slapped the thought off my head.
I can’t possibly think of falling for Damon!
No way.
Chapter 16
Aria.
“There’s someone you might want to see. He’s waiting at the living, you have been having a lot of guests visiting, Aria. How about you let them come live with us?” Peterson said as he opened the door for me, I gave him a side glare and stepped out of my room.
“After you.” He gestured, and I took the stairs, and there was Lucian seated in one of the empty chairs. He was having a conversation with Damon, without being close I could feel the tension that was between them.
They stared at me simultaneously, as if they had both noticed my presence.
Damon had stopped talking, he rubbed his hands over his laps and leaned against the seat.
“You should give us some time alone, I want to speak with Aria.”
“And what if I don’t.” Damon retorted.
I stared at them, wondering what was going on between them.
“I want to speak with her alone, Alpha.” He drawled and kept a straight face.
“This is my house.”
“I will take her to my car then…” Lucian stood up, and proceeded to grab my wrist.
Alpha Damon cleared his throat, and rose up slowly from the chair he sat on, he glanced at Lucian, and his hand on my grip.
“I will give you some minutes.” He muttered, and pulled Lucian’s grip away from mine, and made me sit on the chair he stood up from.
“Be quick.” He stepped out of the living room with his Beta, I turned and smiled at Lucian and he returned it.
“What were you discussing with Alpha Damon?” I asked.
He shook his head, he wasn’t going to say it to me.
“Can you talk about you instead, that’s the reason I came here, the Alpha gave me a pass. I don’t like that you are not in the Silverwolf pack anymore but it is for the best.” He stated, and rubbed his hands together.
“Is he taking good care of you?” He asked.
I nodded with a small smile.
“I’m fine.”
He nodded and lowered his head for a while.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what else to say.” He chuckled nervously, and exhaled. “I came to see you, if you’ve been treated well here.”
“And what if I wasn’t?”
“I would have found a way to take you away from here.”
I chuckled silently.
“I thought you never cared about me. You never looked my way when I was with Rowan.”
“I did, you just didn’t notice.” He sighed, and placed his hands on his both knees.
“I have to leave now, I have a meeting with Alpha Rowan, it’s not something I could miss. I will come over some other time.”
I nodded and he stood up and grabbed his jacket, he wore it over his body.
We walked side by side to his car in silence, he didn’t say much and I wasn’t saying anything either.
I bowed slightly at him when he was about to leave. He took me by surprise, and pulled me into a warm hug. It lasted for a minute before he withdrew from it and got into his car.
I stood and waved at him till he was gone, I twirled around and caught Alpha Damon at the balcony staring at me.
I looked away and stepped into the house.
“Do you hug every man that comes here?” Alpha Damon asked when I got back into the house. His hands were crossed at his back, as he followed me. I stood and spun around facing him.
“He was the one who hugged me.”
“You didn’t push him away.”
“Are you jealous?”
He huffed. “I am Alpha and not moved by such things.
I rolled my eyes and kept taking the stairs back to my room.
“Do you need a tour around the pack?” He asked, I snapped my head around, and glanced at him. I hadn’t left the house since I came here, and the only place I had gone to was the hospital.
“I will give you a tour, if you want to.”
I noticed he hadn’t taken another step since I took the stairs, he wanted me to come to him.
It was almost sunset, and a perfect time to move around. I didn’t want to reject his offer because he might never ask me again about it.
I retraced my steps and went to him, he had a teasing smile on his face.
“I will grab a coat, wait outside.” He said, and left.
I waited close to one of his cars, it was a black one, and I had no idea what it was called.
Damon came out and saw me standing beside one of his cars.
“We ain’t using that.” He replied.
He made his way down to me, and held my hand, taking me away from there to a red car that has an open roof.
He opened the car. “Get in.”
I stepped into it, and he took the driver’s seat and helped me with the seatbelt. He was leaning close and I had to hold my breath for a moment.
He smirked and moved away when he was done.
We drove along the tarred road, we drove past a statue of a werewolf, and a waterfall that was beside it.
“That’s one of my fathers that founded the Pack, and he was killed protecting this land.” Damon explained the statue.
“Felton Black.” I read the name of the werewolf statue.
The best place he stopped was a museum. I had stepped out of the car, and decided to have a look around the museum.
I gasped when I got in, and I heard Damon chuckled softly behind me.
It was big and spacious, there was a lot of painting, sculptures and musical instruments.
Damon explained some of the paintings to me, and there was one he had stared so intently into.
I thought he needed a moment, I decided to look around and when I found a painting that I wanted to ask him about, I turned, he wasn’t there. Someone else was behind me.
His face was in a mask, his mouth moved.
“So you survived?”
Chapter 17
Aria.
When I blinked my eyes, he was gone as there wasn’t a masked man just right in front of me.
“What’s wrong?”
I was startled when a hand touched me.
I spun around, and saw Damon standing beside me. His hand squared my shoulders, and pulled me close to me.
“It’s okay.” He whispered.
“It’s me.” As if he had sensed my fears. He let go of my shoulder and held my hand, taking me out of the museum. He headed towards the car, and opened the door for me.
“Get in, I will take you somewhere else.” I entered, and he closed the door.
I hadn’t found my voice yet.
He glanced at me when he started driving. “Did something happen?” He asked.
I stared at me, I didn’t know how I was going to say it to him. That there was an attempt on my life at Silverwolf Pack, and Alpha Rowan’s judgement was also to have me killed.
I didn’t know if it was a coincidence that such a thing was happening or if it was planned.
If Rowan had any idea that I was the daughter of Alpha Hector, he wouldn't have let me leave the pack with Damon. He would’ve found a way to keep me down, and probably had killed me all those years I stayed with him.
But how was that man able to come here? Was he from this pack, and how was he able to find me here?
“Aria.” Damon called me, and I snapped out of my trance.
“What was the painting you were staring so hard about?” I asked before he could ask me what happened earlier again, I didn’t want to talk about it.
He exhaled. “It was my mother’s painting.” He tilted his head to the side and stared at me.
“She painted herself.” He chuckled sadly.
“I kept it there where everyone could see her, and there was a special I kept for myself.”
He fixed his eyes back on the road and kept driving, I didn’t want to push it, I believed he would talk about it when he wanted to, just like he wasn’t forced to talk about things that I didn’t want to.
We stood close to a rock that was spitting out water. We had gone through a narrow path and a curtain of grass before we got here.
Damon held my hand, and moved forward, we walked past the rocks, and came across a heart shaped stone surrounded with flowers. There ground beneath it was so green, I touched the fine rocks with my hand when Damon let go of me.
“This is the heart of our pack.” Damon stated, and stood beside it.
“It’s beautiful and pure.”
“Kinda like divine, when it’s gone, doom will before our pack.”
“A protection?”
He hummed.
That’s why there were guards outside where Damon had parked the car.
I never thought his Pack would have a place like this, and it looked so peaceful.
“Let out your worry, take a deep breath with your eyes closed, and see.” Damon urged me to give it a try.
I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath, and let it out slowly. I felt at ease when I did it.
The worried thoughts in my heart, distorted, I felt peace.
I gasped in awe after I felt it.
“You felt it didn’t you?” Damon said while smiling at me.
I chuckled, and nodded several times.
“Yes.”
The look in his eyes told me he did the same thing he asked me to, I guessed there was something he was worried about.
“Only members of our pack could come here.”
“But you brought me here.”
“Because you’re part of our pack now.”
“What will they say?” I asked, they won’t take it likely that he took a stranger into their most sacred place in the Pack.
“Why should you care about that?”
“I don’t want them to use me to cause ruin to you.”
He chuckled softly, and closed the distance between us. “I don’t care about that. You’re all that I cared about.”
We locked our gaze for a while, and just stared at each other. His hand reached out to my face, his large palm rested against my cheek, my eyes closed up, feeling the warmth of his hand against my cheek.
Then, I looked up and caught him staring at me.
His hand left my check, and he took a step back, and exhaled. His hands went back into his pocket.
He cleared his throat. “We should head back.”
I nodded, because I didn’t know what I wanted to say, and had just agreed to whatever he said.
He didn’t take my hand when we left and I felt disappointed, I wanted to hold hands with him but he didn’t touch and it made me sad and upset with him.
“It’s late, we should eat out before heading home. I know a good restaurant.” Damon spoke when we got to the car, it was already sunset when we came out of there.
He reached out to my hand when he was driving, and gave it a little squeeze, and he brought it over to his lap. I stared at him wondering what was going through his head. We got to the restaurant, it was built with wood, it was small and beautiful, the only people that were in the restaurant were the chefs and the servers.
Damon pulled out a chair for me to sit, and he took off his coat.
He placed it on the back of a chair. One of the servers came to him, and handed him an apron.
“Welcome Alpha, we cleared everything when we got your call.” Damon nodded at him and he was still staring at me.
He had the apron tied, and placed his hands on the table before me. “What do you want to eat?”
I chuckled and shook my head, I can’t believe he was about to do what I had in mind.
“Don’t give me that look, I can make anything that you want.”
“Then.” I placed a finger on my chin, i would have eaten any food he gave me because I wasn’t a picky eater. “Make me your favorite.”
His face beamed with a smile.
“I have something to tell you after the meal.” He was grinning widely, and I saw a flash of light came across us.
I snapped my head around quickly.
I heard the sound of a camera clicking, someone had taken pictures of us.
Chapter 18
Aria.
“Who was that?” I asked Damon after he went out for a moment and came back afterwards.
“I have taken care of it, you don’t have to worry.” He replied, and went back to put the apron back on. I tapped my fingers on the table and watched him. He threw a wink at me and stood beside the chef where I could see him turning on the gas.
I sipped from the glass of wine slowly with my gaze fixed on him, he was done after some minutes. I didn’t quite check how long he was there preparing a meal. He came to me when he was done, and served the table. The Chef was behind him, holding another bottle of wine and two glasses.
“This is Pan seared steak au poivre with garlic shrimps and roasted vegetables.” Damon said before he took a seat. “It’s not my favorite, if I want to make you my favorite, I would have to use my mom’s recipe. Here, have a bite.” He handed me a fork.
I took it and tasted the meal on my plate and it tasted so damn good. I never knew Damon could be this good at cooking, this was the part I never knew he had in him.
“Does it taste good?” He asked.
I nodded with my mouth filled. He chuckled and uncapped the bottle of wine, and poured it in a glass.
“Why are you being nice to me?” I asked and he simply shrugged and chugged down the wine before he started eating.
I could tell the chefs were peeping at us but I didn’t want to stare at them, I would end up feeling flustered.
We decided to take a walk after we left the restaurant.
“How did you know how to cook?”
“I thought you could take a guess.”
I just wanted him to say it or rather have a conversation with him, because he became a bit quiet even after we ate together at the restaurant. We were close to his house and decided to take a walk, because I needed the cool air, and I was quite enjoying it.
The peace and quiet.
“Your mom did?”
He nodded. He let out a deep breath and stuffed his hands into his coat.
“And after she left, I kept doing it because it took some thought off my head.” He replied and glanced my way, he saw that I was staring at him.
“You never talked about your father.”
The look on his face changed, his face brows furrowed together and his eyes darkened. He averted his gaze from my face, and started walking towards the direction of the house, he didn’t spare me another glance.
I realized that was something I shouldn’t have asked him.
I sighed, and followed the path that he took.
I got back to the mansion alone, I was informed by the guards outside that he had already gone in.
I took the stairs to my room and shut the door.
The next morning when I woke up, I didn’t see him. Peterson informed me that he had gone off for a meeting.
“Can you send a message to the Silverwolf Pack?” I asked him, Peterson was filling water into a bowl of cereal, he acted like he hadn’t heard me.
“I wasn’t talking to myself.” I walked around the table in the kitchen, and stood in front of him.
“To who?”
“Kade.”
I wanted to know how he was doing, why he has never reached out to me since I left the pack? I wanted to know if something had been wrong.
“You know him don’t you?”
He took a spoon, and poured a pack of milk into the cereal.
I took the bowl from his hand when he wasn’t responding to me.
“Give me it back, the maid made you breakfast. You should eat that.” He frowned.
“I just want you to help me.”
“I only take orders from my Alpha.”
“It’s not an order, it’s more like you trying to help.”
“I don’t just help, go to the Silver Wolf Pack. Alpha Damon has to know and approve of me going there.”
“Can’t you find a way of sending a message without you going there? I’m just worried about him.”
“Do you like him?” He raised a brow at him.
“What do you mean?” I found myself stuttering when he asked.
“You know exactly what I mean.” He snatched his bowl of cereal out of my hand, and stirred it with the spoon.
“I cared about him.” I replied and smacked my lips together.
Peterson huffed. “Don’t mess around with Alpha Damon if you ain’t going to be honest with him from the start. Don’t you dare just to make any freaking moves on him or stir up his heart. You’re going to end up hating me if you do, so you better stay away from him and focus on why you’re here and how you intend to help Alpha Damon while you’re here.”
I folded my arms, with a creased face.
Peterson brought out his phone from his pocket and waved it against my face.
I held his hand, so I would be able to see the picture on his phone.
“This was captured last night, the restaurant you ate with Alpha Damon. This news would have been out, and everyone in the werewolf pack would have found out about you. What do you think would have happened to the Alpha?” He withdrew his phone, and I tried to understand what he was saying to me.
“What would have happened?”
“Are you for real right now? You have no idea what would happen?”
“I need to know, so make things clear to me if you’re going to.” I said, and close to the point of being annoyed with.
He turned his back at me and ate from the cereal.
“Why do you hate me so much?” I blurted out, and that still didn’t make him look at me.
“Maybe you should find that out.”
“About what?”
“Everything.” He muttered.
