Four Hearts And One Mate - Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Aria.
The door swung open and Alpha Rowan screeched at me. “Aria, are you done cleaning?” He turned to the man in the room, towering over me, he leaned against Alpha Rowan’s desk now.
“…Alpha Damon,” Rowan whispered.
He was Alpha Damon but how did he know so much about me?
How was he able to tell me such a thing when it was the first time I was seeing him?
“Has she bothered you? She was supposed to clean and leave the office.” Rowan scrawled and stretched his hand to hit me. “This stupid girl,”
I closed my eyes, and braced myself, ready to get hit.
“Don’t touch her.” Alpha Damon’s voice rumbled through the room. He coiled his hand around Alpha Rowan’s wrist. Alpha Rowan was older than him, he was close to his forties, and Alpha Damon was probably in his mid-twenties but he wasn’t showing any respect for Alpha Rowan.
He was taller than Alpha Rowan and more muscular. “What’s your name?”
“Aria,” I replied.
“Aria.” My name rolled off his tongue. “Leave.” He ordered.
“She should have informed me that you’re here, Alpha Damon.” Alpha Rowan’s gaze hardened.
“She showed me to your office, and she was about to call you before you came in. She doesn’t deserve to be hit for that.”
Alpha Damon turned to me. “Leave.”
I nodded and hurried out of the office. I went to the kitchen, in haste to prepare the tea for them and take it back to the office.
I re-entered the office, they were both seated, and I could feel Alpha Damon watching my every move even the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, no one had ever watched me this closely. I dropped the teacup on the table.
“Leave, you stink.” Alpha Rowan gritted out.
I bowed and stepped out of the office even before I left, I felt his eyes on me.
I finished up my chores and when I was done, I went to my room at the side of the pack house, where some of the workers stayed and my friend Ava, who was a worker in the pack house as well.
I began to put the pieces together, the meaning of Alpha Damon’s warning. I opened my drawer and took out the small box which I was able to get from my family, it was the only thing I had left from them.
I was uncovering the fragment of the prophecy linked to my family’s downfall, and if they were the ones that had attacked my family when a knock distracted me.
I hid the box quickly and went to get the door.Kade stood there with a charming smile on his face.
“Have you eaten breakfast?” He asked and stared at me with concern laced in his eyes.
“Not yet.” I managed a smile.
“Perfect, let’s have breakfast together.” He grasped my wrist before I could respond and led me back into the pack house.
Kade was the passionate and fierce warrior in the pack, the strongest of the warriors in the pack. He was the only warrior that treated me differently, he smelled of sweat, he must’ve been back from training. His auburn hair was messy, and his muscles were hefty, his eyes were light hazel.
He always had the softest gaze when he stared at me.
Alpha Damon was leaving the pack house with Alpha Rowan several steps ahead of him. He halted when he saw me, and his eyes fell on my hand that was in Kade’s grip.
His eyes narrowed at me, and the corner of his lips curled.
“I will see you some other time, Aria.” Without another word, he turned and left.
“Why was Alpha Damon staring at you?” Kade asked when he set the plate down on the table in the kitchen. He filled the glasses with water and made me sit on the stool.
I shrugged and started to pick at the meal on my plate.
“He isn’t just interested in anyone, I know Alpha Damon and he said he was going to see you some other time. What does that mean?” He placed his hands on the table, looking at me.
“Does that mean he’s interested in me?” I raised a questioning brow at him. Kade’s eyes darkened, and his chest rumbled a growl.
“I don’t like the way he stared at you.”
“It’s just a stare.” I protested.
“It’s not.” He argued.
“Your food is getting cold.” I pointed it out, and he slumped on his seat and mumbled a few curses.
“Did you get hit?” He held my face, gently brushed the spot where Rowan hit me earlier, and twitched my face to the side. “Who was it?”
I pushed his hand off. “You can’t fight against Rowan.”
“I would, if you let me.” He frowned.
“My life is already hard enough, Kade, don’t add to it.
I urged him to eat. He sighed and took the sausage into his mouth.
“It was this morning wasn’t it? It wasn’t there yesterday. That bastard.”
I had known Kade for years, and he has been protective of me ever since, perhaps he thought I was just a weak omega servant in the pack house. And the last thing I wanted was for him to challenge Rowan, I don’t want him to lose his title as part of the warrior or get demoted.
I cared that much about him, and when Rowan hit me he mostly made sure it was part of my body that wasn’t visible.
His hand went to my hair, and he stroked it with his fingers. “I have another meeting in an hour, we are preparing for the annual pack hunt, will you be okay?”
I nodded.
“Smile will you?” He sounded as if he was pleading, and I smiled at him, he returned the smile, and he took his hand off my hair.
I had to keep my emotions in check despite the struggle, and I hadn’t forgotten Alpha Damon’s words either, it lingers in the back of my head.
Kade left the kitchen to receive a call, and I picked up the plate to take them to the sink, something surged through within me as if it ran inside my body, I stood for a second, and the plates in my hands broke.
It splattered on the ground.
I gasped, taking a step back from the plate, the glass on the plate gave me a slight cut but it covered up immediately, the blood dried up.
“Aria!” Kade called in panic and pulled me away from the broken plate. His eyes roamed over my body. “Are you hurt?” He asked, his chest rising and falling, he cupped my cheek and he assessed me.
He heaved a sigh of relief. I couldn’t speak, something had happened and I was the cause of it.
“Stay here, I will take care of the mess.” He rasped and left my side, he picked up the broom, and a parker and began to take the broken plate off the floor. He walked out of the kitchen through the back door to dump the broken plates and that was when I noticed.
There was a shadowy figure at the doorway of the kitchen, darted out of sight the moment I saw it.
Someone was watching me.

Chapter 3

Aria.
The annual hunt was held outside the pack house and it was in the woods, Alpha Rowan invited some other packs to join in the hunt, so the woods were filled with wolves.
Kade made me stay close to him during the hunt, and he didn’t go too far because he didn’t want to lose sight of me.
“Stay close, Aria.” I had lost count of how many times he said that. He added that he didn’t want me to get close to the woods because he wouldn’t be able to look for me in the woods and I might end up getting hurt.
So, I stayed close to Kade and watched him interact with the other warriors, making sure that each part of the woods was protected.
“Aria, Alpha Rowan wants you to come to him, now, he said you should bring his flask which held his tea in it, to him.” A blonde woman said to me. “He said he needs it now before he starts the hunt.”
“If I were you, I would get going.” She pressed on when I hesitated.
I had brought the flask with me, and I wanted to inform Kade that I was leaving because Alpha Rowan wanted me but he was in a deep conversation. I don’t want to get into trouble with Alpha Rowan, especially not here. I turned to the blonde.
“Where is he?”
“Come, I will take you to him.”
I followed her, holding the flask to my chest, I marched the grass with my black boots, and the tight jeans that I wore, following the lady closely.
Before I knew what was happening, something hit me on the back of my head, I stumbled face down, the flask falling from my hand.
“Is she the one?” I heard voices.
“Yes.” A haggard voice responded, I groaned and tried to stand, but a strong hand forced a handkerchief on my nose. His arms were strong and no matter how hard I hit them, they wouldn’t budge, his grip tightened. I could smell wolfsbane in the handkerchief, I kicked my feet, fighting back but nothing, the face of the man was masked, and my sight was getting blurry.
I kicked his groin, and he grunted and took his hand off my nose, I jerked up to my feet and ran.
Running past the giant trees, and thick bushes, it didn’t take more than a minute before he came after me. I ran faster, knowing that I couldn’t shift my legs was the only option I had, something struck my back.
I groaned and tumbled, and the next minute, I saw him shift into his wolf form, a black wolf.
He growled and jumped in front of me.
He raised his claws to stroke me with it, I let out a scream and covered my face with my hand.
I heard a louder growl, and when I could no longer feel the weight of the wolf, I took my hands off and saw him fighting with a brown wolf with dark hazel eyes.
Kade.
The black wolf ran off, and Kade’s wolf scurried over to me.
His wolf whimpered, and I forced a smile on my lips and touched his furs. He shifted back to his human form, and I thought he was going to blame me for leaving his side but instead, he picked me up from the ground.
I whined when he touched me, he said nothing, but his jaw was clenched tight, and his eyes stared ahead of us.
“Kade,” I called, he didn’t spare me a glance.
“You’re hurt, I will get you treated.” He spoke quietly. “Lean close.”
I placed my head on his chest and locked my hands around his neck. I watched him from under my lashes.
“Someone was after you.” He stated, and he looked down at me for a brief moment. “That wolf could have…” He averted his gaze, the words felt heavy in his throat.
I knew what he meant, someone wanted to kill me, and that was clearly an assassinating attempt on my life.
I was in danger, that was the reality, and someone in the pack wanted me dead.
Kade took me out of the woods and made me sit on the wooden bench close to where the other wolves were gathered.
“Let me see.” He muttered, his eyes softened, and I fiddled with my shirt.
“You want me to take you inside?” He asked and clasped his hand over mine.
I shook my head and twirled around on the seat, and rolled my shirt up a little.
“Fuck.” Kade cussed while staring at the wound on my back, there was another wound at the back of my head as well.
“I will clean them up.” He muttered and went to grab the first aid kit.
I bit my lower lip and exhaled.
I felt the slight touches on my back, whining.
“I’m sorry.” He cooed and was a little more gentle with his touches and I felt something roll down my back, it didn’t feel like water, it smelled like blood.
I looked over my shoulder and glanced at him. He had slit his palm with a small knife.
“Why did you do that Kade?”
“You think I could bear leaving you writhing in pain? You’ll heal faster with my blood.”
I took my lips in and stared at him, he didn't know anything about me, and I couldn’t bring myself to tell him either. “How did you find me?” I asked.
“I took a glance at the spot I left you and you weren’t there. I left the warriors and searched around, and then I saw the flask on the ground. I knew you had it with you, it was for Alpha Rowan.”
“Did something happen?” Someone interjected.
Kade dropped my shirt, and I spun around on the bench, Kade stood up and picked up the first aid box.
“It’s none of your business.” He hissed at him, and I had to stare at the intruder.
“It seems that she’s hurt, so I got the doctor for her.
“I can take care of it.” Kade snapped.
“Don’t be stubborn Kade, she should see a doctor if there’s a need to.”
“Would you stay out of it, Lucian?”
Lucian, the cold and calculative strategist from the council. When his cold gray eyes looked at me, I turned the other way. He had this silver hair that distinguished him from the other wolves in the council.
His motive remained unclear, and he was more reserved and tended to observe more than engage but now he was here, staring at me, and the wound that I had sustained and holding a conversation with Kade. I suspected him, he could have sent the wolf after me. He was part of the council, and Rowan trusted strategist.
His eyes lingered on my face, his expression was hard to decipher.
He breathed out and jammed his hands into his pocket. “Alpha Rowan wants you to meet with him after the hunt.” He turned the other way and sauntered out of our midst.
My suspicion was around him, the reason he came here to find out if Kade brought me back dead or not. He was working with Rowan.
I was determined to find out the truth behind the attack, and whoever was after me because someone clearly wanted me dead.
