Silver wolf - Chapter 9

Chapter 9

After his father's judgement and decision to banish Veronica from the pack, Beck walked back to his room. He began to have flashbacks of how Veronica was pleading with him to help her beg his father to allow her stay because she had no other place to go but he turned his back on her.

“Maybe I could have pleaded with my father.” He thought to himself as he sat on the edge of his bed. “I don't think it would have changed anything if I did beg him because his mind was made up.”

“All she has ever brought to this pack over the years has been problems. Nothing but problems! I don't think I did anything wrong.” He shrugged, then leaned back to lay on the bed, staring intently at the white ceiling of his room.

While he was still in his thoughts, the door to his room opened and someone walked in and shut the door. He felt a movement on his bed but he didn't pay attention as he was still lost in his many thoughts.

“Beck? Why do you look worried? I hope it's not because of that thing? That girl?” Blue, Beck's sister asked but he didn't hear her.

“Beck!” She yelled and hit his shoulder, bringing him out of his thoughts.

“Ouch! Whoa! What is it?” He asked her, touching his shoulder that she hit as he sat up.

“I've been talking to you since, yet you're not answering me. You're not saying anything.” She complained.

“I'm sorry, I was so lost in thoughts. When did you come in here though? Cos I didn't notice.” He said.

“How will you notice when you've been staring at the ceiling like you want to be absorbed into it or something?” She said and hissed.

“Why were you so lost in thoughts though?” She asked him, raising her eyebrow.

“It's nothing.” He said, trying to waive the topic.

“Nothing? You know you can't lie to me, right? Come on, tell me.” She urged. Who knows, maybe I can be of help. Just tell me.” She shrugged, tapping his shoulder with hers.

“I said I'm fine. Why are you here in the first place?” He asked with a serious look on his face.

“Wait, what's with the serious face? I came here to check on you.” She replied.

“What for?” He asked, turning to look at her.

“Can't I check on my brother anymore? What's with this new attitude?” She asked, confused as to why he was acting coldly towards her. He didn't respond to her, but instead, laid back on the bed and began to stare at the ceiling once again.

“Wait, don't tell me it's because of that useless girl.” She suddenly said, as she remembered that he could be acting up because of Veronica. “No way! That weak thing? You've got to be kidding me. I can't believe you're getting worked up because of that loser who can't even fight to save herself, talk less of anyone else in her corner.”

Hearing this, Beck sat up with speed and held his sister's hand firmly, growling, “Don't you ever speak of her in that manner again. Never! The next time you do this, you'll have yourself to blame.”

“Let go of me. You're hurting me. What the hell is wrong with you?” She screamed, as she tried to escape her brother's grip, but his grip was too tight for her tiny hands to escape and his eyes began to change colour.

“When you knew you still cared about her, why didn't you fight for her?” She shouted at him and immediately, as if doused with a full bucket of cold water, Beck loosened his grip on Blue's hand and she instantly became free and his eyes went back to their normal colour.

“Exactly, that's what I thought. You're just acting like a coward!.” She yelled at him and stood up angrily.

“Look, if you're looking for someone to take the blame, it should be you, because you not only watched as she was being thrown out, but you turned your back on her. Now, don't come here acting like you actually care about her and you're sad that she was banished, because that's all a lie. You can fool others but you can't fool me.” She growled at him and her eyes began to change their color because she was really angry.

Unknown to them, their little drama had alerted Beck's friends and their mum, and they rushed to his room, to see the siblings having a back and forth. But their mum got there first.

“What is going on here? What is all this fuss about? Why are you both trying to bring the whole place down with your noise?” Their mother asked, the moment she stepped into the room.

“Ask your coward of a son!” She snapped, leaving their mother surprised.

Beck sprung up from the bed and faced her, “One more word from you!” He growled.

“What are you going to do? What exactly are you going to do to me? Beat me up? Punish me? Banish me?” She spewed, facing Beck in a very close range, and looking him straight in the eyes, while watching him breathe heavily, with clenched fists, because he was trying to calm himself down and stop himself from hitting her.

At this moment, Ben and Damion, Beck's friends, came in and were surprised at the sight before them.

“Beck, please calm down.” They chorused like they had planned it before coming in, but it just seemed like Beck was deaf at that moment, because he didn't move.

“Stop this nonsense right now! What the hell is wrong with you both? Do you think you're little kids? What nonsense! Does it not matter to you that I'm standing right here? Yet you keep bickering like angry birds! What insolence! What disrespect!” She yelled angrily and they both stepped away from each other.

Beck's friends took him to a corner in the room, while his mother ordered Blue to leave the room immediately.

“Blue, Leave this room immediately.” Her mother ordered her.

“Mum! I'm not even the one at fault here, it's Beck. He is the one sulking because that useless trouble-magnet he called his mate has been banished!” Blue protested, screaming, before angrily walking out of Beck's room.

“What????” Their mother yelled in surprise.

Chapter 10

“So the reason for this drama is because of that girl? Oh no! I can't believe this.” His mother said, shaking her head.

“Beck? Is this true?” She asked him but he remained silent.

“Your silence says a lot. Your silence only means that Blue is right. You're so unbelievable! What were you thinking? That you'll get married to that weak wolf, who can't even save herself, not to talk of others if a war begins?” She asked, irritated.

“I heard how she was unable to save her best friend when the rogue wolves attacked and she got killed in the process. Is that who you want to be with? Is that who you're here sulking for? Just pray that your father does not find out about this. I'm sure you know what he can do, I don't need to remind you.” She said and hissed.

“I can't believe that she is not here anymore, yet she is still causing so much trouble. She really attracts problems wherever she goes to.” She added and hissed loudly again.

“Yes, Beck, you know your mum is right. You shouldn't be sulking here because of Veronica. She is too weak for you, you said it yourself, didn't you?” Ben said and Beck turned to glare at him.

“He is right. Why are you glaring at him in that manner? Since you already know she is too weak for you, why are you acting up?” His mother spoke again.

“Can you all just give me a break! Can't I have my alone moment in peace? Why are you all in my throat? Why are you trying to shove your opinions down my throat? I'm fine! I never said I was down because of her. Damn!” Beck snapped at them.

“And who is shoving their opinions down your throat? I will not just stand here and watch you disrespect me. Never! I won't allow it. You may be taller than I am right now but I am still your mother!” She yelled at him.

“I'm sorry, mum. I just-” He tried to apologize but she cut him off when she walked out on him.

“Man, I understand that you are not happy with the way things turned out. I mean, she wasn't just given a light punishment, she was BANISHED. DAMN!” Ben said.

“But come to think of it, last time I checked, you complained bitterly about this girl. You said she didn't compliment you in any way, and she didn't deserve to be the Luna because she is weak.” Damion stated.

“Even at that, I don't think she deserved to be banished. At least, a punishment would have sufficed, knowing well that she probably has no place to go and no family or pack to go back to. I wonder where she will go now.” Tom said to him.

“But she must have come from somewhere. She didn't fall from the sky, did she now?” Damion said, and Beck glared at him.

”Damion!” Ben exclaimed.

“What?” He snapped back. “What did I do? I did nothing wrong and I definitely said nothing wrong.” He said, shrugging.

“Come on, don't be insensitive.” Ben scolded him.

“I'm not being insensitive, I was just asking a question because I was genuinely curious. Since you said you weren't sure if she had any place to go to and she didn't have any family members, did she fall from the sky? It's an honest question, why are you trying to make it sound like I'm mocking him or her.” Damion complained.

“Just keep quiet, Damion! Can't you read the room. Keep quiet.” Tom ordered him to keep quiet because he noticed Beck was getting angry already and it would only be a matter of minutes before he finally flared up.

“Why would you tell me to keep quiet? What for? This doesn't even concern you. What is your business with the girl who was banished in the first place? What business do you have with her? Come to think of it, you've been taking her side ever since, so much so that I'm beginning to wonder if there is more than meets the eye.” Damion said, and Ben looked at him in a confused manner.

“Are you crazy? What are you insinuating?” Ben asked.

“You definitely know what I'm insinuating and you know what I'm trying to say, you coward.” Damion snapped back, sneering at him.

“Me? A coward? How dare you?” Ben asked angrily.

“Yes, that's what you are. You think I did not know? Or do you think you could hide it forever? Hahaha, you must be a fool.” Damion began another round of bickering and Ben angrily charged at him.

Beck had watched as both his childhood friends kept throwing words at each other in an angry manner. He had decided to keep watching them at first, until he noticed they were about to get aggressive, and so he jumped in between them to separate them.

“Will you both behave and stop fighting like children? What the hell is wrong with you two? Why are you both acting like kids? Are you here to see me or you're here to fight yourselves? What exactly is the matter?” Beck yelled angrily at them.

“You should ask him since he was the one who started it.” Ben yelled, fuming.

“You coward, why don't you tell him the truth? Are you scared, you spineless coward!” Damion shouted and another round of fight was about to break out, but Beck was quick to stop them from tearing each other apart.

“What exactly is going on? This is getting more serious than I thought it would be. I thought we were all friends, what is all this violence for?” Beck asked, looking so confused.

Truly, the three of them had been friends for a long time, so he could not understand why they both were fighting right at that moment because there was no sign of disagreement between them before. Or did he miss the sign?

“Can you guys please just stop? We're supposed to be friends for crying out loud!” Beck said, trying to make them calm down.

“Friends? That was what I thought too until I found out that this bastard had always had a thing for Veronica. He has been secretly in love with her even while she was still dating you, Beck!” He dropped the bombshell.

Chapter 11

“What?” Beck and Ben chorused in shock. They could not believe what Damion had just said.

“Is this true, Ben?” He asked.

“Calm down, Beck. It's not what you think. It's not even true. Don't listen to him. He is just spewing nonsense. I don't know where he heard this nonsense from.” Ben said, trying to defend himself.

“Oh really?” Damion scoffed. “Explain what it is then.” He sneered at him.

“Damion! What the hell is wrong with you? Have you lost your damn mind?” Ben yelled at him.

He turned back to Beck in a bid to explain the misunderstanding but from the look on Beck's face, it was clear that he was extremely furious and mad at him.

“I can't believe I've trusted a betrayer all these years. You're supposed to be my best friend for crying out loud! How could you harbor feelings for my girl? I hope you're happy now that she has left.”

“No, Beck. Trust me. The moon goddess is my witness. I have never had any of that kind of feeling towards her.” Ben explained.

“But you were close to her?” Beck asked.

“Yes, I was close to her at some point, but it was never because of any feelings.” He replied. “Please don't allow these rumors to ruin what we've built over the years, please. Believe me. I'll never intentionally betray you and you know this.” Ben explained.

“Lies! Pure lies.” Damion interrupted, but before Beck could say anything, Ben had charged towards Damion again and thrown him a punch in the face.

Beck immediately separated them before they attracted the attention of the other pack members to themselves.

“Have you both lost your minds? “ Beck yelled at them.

“You know what? Just leave!” He ordered angrily.

“But -” The both of them tried to protest but Beck wasn't ready to listen to whatever they had to say.

“Just leave before I lose my temper!” He repeated. “I SAID LEAVE!!!” He growled, leaving them now with choice but to leave immediately.

Immediately they left and shut the door behind them, Beck threw himself on his bed, frustrated. After a few minutes, he stood up and began to pace around in his room. He tried to not think about what Damion just said, but he couldn't and it just made matters worse. He wondered why Ben, who was his best friend, would betray him by having feelings for Veronica. At the same time, he began to have second thoughts.

“But why would Ben do such a thing? Is it even possible? Could Damion be lying?” He asked himself. “But he has no reason to lie, I mean, he has nothing to gain from lying.” Beck told himself, silently.

“I must have been a fool for never finding out!” He said and hissed.

“But damn! Veronica is really problematic like mum said. I'm shocked that, at the mention of her name, heads butt and there's always one fight or the other.” He said irritatingly.

“Could they be right by saying she is cursed?” He asked himself.

Frustrated, he stopped pacing and grunted loudly before sitting angrily on his bed.

Outside Beck's room, Ben and Damion stood for a few minutes before Damion decided to leave Ben and walk away but Ben grabbed his arm and took him with him far from the building.

He flung Damion’s arm angrily away from his grip, making him stagger as he tried to gain balance, “You know, I'm highly disappointed in you. In fact, “disappointed” is an understatement. How could you? How could you think so lowly of me? How could you say such things? That I had a thing for Veronica? Really?” Ben said to Damion, angrily, but deep down, he was hurt.

Damion straightened his rumpled clothes, “Please don't try to play that pity card with me here, because it won't work. I know what you are.” He snapped at him.

“You know what I am?” Ben scoffed. “What does that even mean?” He asked, confused.

“Look, Ben, I'm in no mood for all these talks. I have evidence and a living witness to back up my claims. I'm not a fool who will just be spreading rumors just because I feel like doing so.” Damion replied.

“But you didn't even walk up to me to ask me, you just jumped into conclusion because you have evidence and “a living witness”? Really, Damion? I thought you were better than this.” Ben said, staring at him.

“And who is this your “living witness” ?” Ben asked him.

“And why should I tell you? Oh, so you think I'll tell you so that you'll go and threaten her? You must be joking.” Damion replied, mockingly.

“Oh, so it's a female? It's a she?” Ben asked immediately he caught on to the fact that the witness Damion was talking about was a female.

Displeased that he had given that information away, Damion cleared his throat, “Look, do whatever you want to do and say whatever you want to say to defend yourself. It still doesn't change the fact that you're a sly friend that everyone should be weary of.”

“Stop this nonsense, Damion! Stop this! It's beginning to look like someone has been feeding you with so much lies, that you've forgotten that we've been friends for years and I won't suddenly betray Beck because of a female, not to talk of an omega for that matter.” Ben snapped at him.

“Oh, but you didn't think about that when you told me you found her attractive back then!” Damion snapped back at him.

“What? That was many years ago, before she met Beck for crying out loud! What the hell are you on about? Are you crazy? So all this drama is because of what I told you years ago?” Ben shook his head in total disbelief.

“That was what I thought until I began to see the way you kept looking lovingly at her. Back then, I thought it was normal and I didn't think too much about it, until recently when someone else brought it to my notice.” Damion replied

Ben could not believe that the young man who had been accusing him was his friend, he thought about how far they had come and how long they had been friends for, and kept wondering who could have given him such false information about him and Veronica and why, but as much as he thought about it, he just couldn't find an answer, which frustrated him the more, because Beck was back in his room and he would probably be thinking about everything that Damion has said.

“You know what? You're unbelievable and crazy.” Ben said to him as he hissed and left, getting in his car and driving off, leaving Damion alone there.

Chapter 12

Veronica trudged on in the forest, limping on her injured leg as she still felt pain in it, which made her journey slower than it would have been. Not that she had a particular destination in mind, but she just kept moving, hoping that luck would smile on her and she would find a place to rest for the night before it got darker.

As she kept wandering around in the forest, she noticed something familiar.

“Why does this place look so familiar? I thought I had passed this tree before now. Are all the trees now looking the same?” She asked herself as she looked around to be sure that she wasn't right.

“No, it can't be. They all just look alike. It's the forest, so the trees are bound to look alike.” She said again as she kept going.

After walking for almost twenty minutes, she saw the familiar big tree again.

“No way, what could be going on? Am I seeing things now?” She said out loud, obviously expecting no answer, except her voice echoing back to her.

As she stood there, a thought came to her mind. She took the tip of her dress and tore it, she then tied it to the trunk of the tree. After doing this, she began to walk in the same direction that she had walked earlier, and after almost thirty minutes, this time around, because of her tiredness, she arrived at the same big tree, which now had her torn dress wrapped round it.

“No way! No No No!” She cried out the moment she saw what was going on. It was exactly what she had dreaded to happen. She had been going round in circles.

She threw herself to the ground, ignoring the pain in her leg and began to weep profusely and uncontrollably.

“How can you be so stupid, Vee. You've been going around in circles for the past three hours. Why are you so clueless and unfortunate?” She began to beat herself up about it as she cried.

While she was crying, she heard a rustling sound in the bushes behind her.  At first, she ignored and paid no attention until the sound came again, louder and closer to her than before. She thought of approaching the source of the noise but changed her mind again. Soon, she then heard a loud hissing sound and this time she just knew she definitely had to turn around to see what it was.

As she slowly and gradually turned back to look behind her, to her surprise, she came face to face with a large snake, slithering gracefully on the forest floor. Although it was getting dark, she could still see its scales glistening, and its forked tongue flicking in and out as it sniffed the air. Fear gripped her heart as she realized she was just inches away from the dangerous creature, which would not hesitate to strike her and render her incapacitated, before breaking her bones and gulping her down in just a matter of minutes. Her breath caught in her throat, and she felt shivers running down her spine.

The snake was now curled up right in front of her, staring right in her eyes, but to her surprise, she noticed it was trying to strike her but it was like a force was pulling it back and it couldn't touch her.

Without any more hesitation, she took to her heels, taking another path, ignoring her pain and running as fast as her legs could carry her, with the image of the snake etched in her mind.

As she sprinted through the forest, the adrenaline pumping through her veins, she couldn't shake off the feeling of being followed by the snake and so she kept running and didn't stop until she realized once again that she had gotten to that same tree where she tied her torn dress, earlier.

Seeing that she had gotten to that same tree again, she stopped running and collapsed to the ground, “NO!!!!!!!!” She screamed in pain and disbelief.

She thought she had escaped running around in circles since she took another path but it seemed like there was no end to her circling around.

“Moon goddess!!!! What have I done wrong to deserve all of this? Why is nothing going well for me? Why is nothing happening right? Isn't it bad enough that I'm a worthless and useless omega who amounts to nothing? Isn't it bad enough that I was rejected by the only one I truly loved and thought he loved me the same way? Isn't it also bad enough that I lost my best friend?”

“The only one I could call my sister! Isn't it also bad enough that I was BANISHED from the pack that I have known as home for many years, while the one i thought would fight for me just looked away while i was suffering in pain and in need of him after? Isn't all that bad and terrible enough? But now that I'm trying to pick the pieces of my life and move forward, I find out I'm stuck in the same position, going around in circles without knowing. What exactly have I done that is so bad and unforgivable?” She lamented painfully as the tears refused to stop pouring out.

“It's better you kill me here and now, since I'm not useful to anyone and I'm not even useful to myself too. I don’t know how you would do it but I think you need to just kill me now. At least that way, I'll have peace.” She cried and lay flat on the ground and closed her eyes, as if waiting for someone to kill her truly.

She remained motionless, still closing her eyes, and slept off for hours till it got so dark at night. While still lying there on the floor, she heard the loud sound of thunder and lightning which immediately woke her up, as she shrieked in fear and immediately got up.

“Oh no! I thought the moon goddess answered me already.” She complained and looked around, only to find out that everywhere was dark.

“Gosh! I've been sleeping all along. And it's about to rain. Oh no! This is a disaster. Where do I go from here now? What do i—” The lightning and thunder came again, louder than before.

She immediately picked up her little baggage and began to run in the opposite direction of where she had been going before, trying to find somewhere to hide from the rain before it started. She hadn't gone too far when the rain began to pour down heavily.

“I knew it, I'm CURSED. The rain couldn't even wait for me to find somewhere to hide.” She muttered as she kept running, completely drenched by the rain.

She kept running in the dark until she stumbled and fell and passed out immediately.

Chapter 13

As Veronica fell to the ground, her vision became blurry, and before she knew what was going on, complete darkness had enveloped her. The last thing she remembered was the sharp pain shooting through her leg after she stumbled and fell, before everything faded to black.

It was very early in the morning when she finally began to regain consciousness, and everywhere around was still a bit dark. A pounding ache pulsed through her head. The air in the cave was musty and thick with the scent of old particles and decay. Slowly, she began to  open her eyes, to find herself in a dimly lit cave. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, and became wide open, she began to look around, wondering where she was and how she got there.

“Where am I?” She asked herself.

As she looked around, she noticed that the walls of the cave were rough and uneven, it was a very old cave. Also, the silence in there was so deafening, it was broken only by the sound of her own ragged breathing.

“Arrggghhhh! My head hurts.” She held her head as the ache in her head persisted.

As she tried to sit up, she realized she was surrounded by skeletal remains, mostly old dry bones and a few fresh ones. The bones laid scattered, haphazardly, across the floor, partially covered in damp soil, moss and dirt.

Seeing this, panic gripped her heart, and she screamed out loudly in horror. Her heart raced as she struggled to stand, with her limbs becoming instantly weak and shaky. She stumbled towards the entrance of the cave, desperate to escape the gruesome scene that surrounded her. But as she reached the mouth of the cave, a cold chill ran through her spine when she saw what was in front of her.

Standing at the entrance of the cave was a large gray wolf. Its blue eyes gleaming with malice. Veronica froze, as it let out a low growl, her eyes widened and her breath caught in her throat as she realized she had not been alone all along.

She took a second look at the cave and soon realized that it must belong to the wolf who was staring at her with its scary eyes, baring its teeth like it was about to attack her.

With slow steps, she retreated back into the cave in fear as she stared at the wolf which was also staring at her. As she retreated back into the cave, the wolf followed her, with slow steps too.

“What do I do now? I'm done for.” She cried in her heart.

As she moved further backwards, she stumbled on a long bone and fell backwards but she was quick to pick herself up. She immediately picked the bone which caused her to fall and held it to defend herself.

The Wolf let out another growl as it saw her holding the bone out to it as she kept using it to ward it off. The more she moved backwards, the closer the wolf came towards her. This kept going on till she felt her back, hitting against the wall, hinting that there was nowhere else to go to.

The Wolf was now a few inches away from where she was standing. It let out a loud growl as it prepared to attack her, but as it was about to claw her face, with one hard strike, she instantly hit it with the bone she was holding. To her shock, it sent it flying to the side, making it hit its back hard against the wall, surprising her because she didn't expect that a piece of dry bone could have so much effect on such a big wolf. The Wolf let out a loud painful growl as it hit the wall and fell down,  giving Veronica the avenue to run out as fast she could and as fast as her legs could carry her, without looking back.

Determined not to stop until she was free from the wolf, she kept running until she got to a crossroad and stopped right in the middle, confused as to where to go from there.

Frustrated and tired from running for a long time, she sat at the stump of a tree,

“Moon goddess, what exactly is my offense? Is it my fault that I was born? Why is it that ever since I have been born, it is from one trouble to the other? It's either I am in trouble or I'm the one causing trouble, where exactly did I go wrong? What should I do again? Cos I have tried my best but nothing seems to be working at all.” She cried bitterly as she spoke.

“And why haven't you killed me yet? If you want to kill me, why are you stalling? I thought I was already about to die the last time but I was shocked when I saw that I was awake again. Does it bring you joy when I suffer? Can't you just take my life in peace?”

“It's really funny that I thought you changed your mind about my fate but you still allowed that weird looking wolf to try to kill me? Why?” She shouted like she was hoping to get answers but the only voice she heard was her voice which was echoing back to her in the forest.

She paused for a while as she remembered something, “I think you were trying to kill me truly but I guess I didn't want to be killed, because if not, why did I run away from that wolf? I should have just stayed back and let it tear me apart and eat my body.” She said to herself.

At that moment, her stomach began to make sounds because she was hungry and she had not eaten anything since she was sent out of the pack. Her eyes scanned round the forest as she thought of where she could go to find food or something suitable for her to eat. Seeing nothing edible within the range of where she was sitting, she decided to ignore the feeling of hunger, hoping that if she didn't think about it, she would not feel hungry anymore.

Shortly after thinking that it worked, the sound in her stomach came again but this time it came with an unbearable pain.

“Urrrrhhhh!” She groaned in pain, holding her stomach as the pain persisted.

As soon as the pain subsided, she got up, determined to find something to eat before she died of hunger in the forest where no one would probably find her.

As she got up and began her journey, she looked at her leg and remembered that she twisted it earlier but surprisingly she couldn't feel any pain anymore. She wondered how it was possible, as she knew she definitely didn't get it treated.

“Well, that's strange.” She said as she hit her leg hard on the ground and felt no pain still. She soon shrugged it off and continued on her journey.

She had not walked too long when she heard a loud rustling in the bushes nearby and she froze immediately.
