Chapter 19
Soon the new day broke and Scott finally woke up to Veronica's eyes watching him like a hawk. She didn't sleep a wink throughout the night. She kept watching him and as soon as she saw his eyes open, she immediately heaved a sigh of relief.
“Scott, you're awake? Oh my, I'm so happy.” She said with tears in her eyes as she helped him sit up.
“I thought I had lost you.” She cried and hugged him.
“What happened? Where are we? How did we end up in here?” He kept asking numerous questions as he rubbed his eyes and yawned.
“Well, it’s a pit. You fell in and passed out. I had to come in to get you.” She said and Scott could almost not believe his ears.
“I did what? You did what? Geez! So much happened!” He exclaimed, unable to contain his shock at the turn of events.
“The last thing I remember was getting fruits and you jumping down from the tree because I had something dangerous with me and I almost ate it if not for you.” He explained but suddenly held his head because he felt a sharp pain as he tried to remember.
“Don't stress your head. You fell in right after we left that place. I think it was dug as a trap or something.” She said and he gasped in shock.
“But it's quite deep.” Scott said as he looked up, just realizing how deep the pit was.
“Yup, you can say that again.” Veronica agreed, looking up too.
“Does that mean we're in trouble?” He whispered.
“I don't know, I'm not sure but we need to get out of here as soon as possible.” She replied.
“But how do we get out of here?” He asked, confused.
“Using that.” She replied, pointing at the rope she used in getting into the large pit.
“The rope?” He asked, quite unsure.
She scoffed, “Yes, of course.”
“How is that going to be possible?” He asked with raised eyebrows.
“How do you think I got in here?” She asked, raising an eyebrow.
“I thought you jumped in or something.” He answered, shrugging.
“Really? Can't you see how deep this place is? You want me to end up with some broken bones? I'm surprised as to how you are still in one piece.” She said jokingly as she checked his body for anything broken.
“But you jumped down from that tall tree yesterday, didn't you?” He said and she sighed.
“Should I tell you the truth?” She asked him and he nodded.
“I don't know how that happened.” She said, slightly biting down her lip.
“You mean, jumping down from the tree?” He asked her, surprised.
“Yes, I don't know how it happened. Although it happens on very rare occasions, it's not something I have power over, neither is it something I can control. I think it has only happened twice in my entire life, at least that's all the memory I have.” She explained to him.
“Wow. That is quite strange, don't you think?” He said, with a confused look.
“I agree. Now enough with the talks, it's time to get out of here before we get in some real trouble.” She said, getting up and helping him up too.
“We can't go up together, you'll go first and I'll come after you've gotten to the top.” She told him.
“But why?” He inquired.
“I doubt that the rope will be able to hold both our weights together. It's better to be safe than sorry, you know.” She answered and he nodded.
Soon enough, Scott gradually climbed to the top with the rope and as soon as he got to the top, Veronica heaved a sigh of relief.
“Now it's your turn.” Scott shouted down at her in the pit and she smiled as she took hold of the rope.
She began climbing up, but halfway through, the rope snapped and down she fell back into the pit with a loud thud, dislocating her shoulder from the impact of the fall.
“Arrghhh.” She screamed and winced as intense pain shot through her shoulder.
Seeing what had just happened, Scott screamed in shock.
“Are you okay, Vee?” He asked as he tried to climb back down to meet her but was immediately stopped by Veronica.
As soon as she caught wind of what he was about to do, she immediately shouted, “No, please don't come back down here.”
“I'm fine but I think I've dislocated my shoulder.” She added, shouting so that he could hear her due to the distance between them.
“Then let me come down so I can help.” He shouted.
“No!” She yelled, “Don't come back in here. The rope… It snapped. It will be impossible for you to be able to get back out if you do that. We'll both be stuck here.” She explained and he sat at the edge of the pit devastated.
Suddenly, he sprung up to his feet, “I think I have to try to get help. I can't sit here and wait anymore. I'll make sure I get help and I'll come back to get you, okay?” Scott assured her and even though he wasn't sure of where he was going to, he ran off to get help he could find.
Coincidentally, at the other end of the forest, the warriors had arrived.
“This time around, we're going to split into four different groups. The first group will go toward the East, the second group will go Northward, the third group will go Southward and the fourth group will move towards the West part of the forest.” He instructed them as he studied the map and the pointers on it.
“Leader, what about the fifth group?” One of the warriors asked.
“The fifth group will remain here. Just in case the four groups don't find anything and he is on the move, they'll be able to find him.” He answered and they all nodded in agreement as they looked at their leader with admiration and respect for his wisdom and leadership skills.
They then split into five groups according to their leader's orders.
“I'm sure I don't need to tell you all what we are looking for.” He said as he looked at each of them and they shook their
“All four groups can leave now.” He ordered after choosing a leader for each group, while he stayed behind to direct the last group.
******
Scott ran as fast as his legs could carry him until he ran out of breath and was so thirsty and hungry. He soon began to feel dizzy again and suddenly fell.
“I need to get help. Vee is in…..” was all he could mutter before he heard some muffled, unclear voices and footsteps from far away in front, approaching him.
The last thing he was able to hear, even though it wasn't completely clear, was some of them screaming words that sounded like, “Leader, we have found him. He is here.” It sounded like they were screaming joyfully as they finally got to where he was.
“Carry the boy. He looks like he is about to lose consciousness, we need to take him back as soon as possible. He'll be waiting for us now.” Another voice had ordered.
Scott wasn't sure if he was in safe hands or in trouble. He wasn't sure if they sounded so joyful, earlier because he had now fallen into their trap and they had finally found him as a prey or for some other reasons.
He also couldn't see any of the faces clearly because his vision had gotten blurry but he knew he was carefully carried and they were on the move, before he shut his eyes completely and lost consciousness.
Chapter 20
**FIRE DAWN PACK**
“You're going hunting?” Megan asked, shocked, with her eyes almost popping out of their sockets.
“Yes, Megan, is there anything wrong with that?” Steve asked, still sharpening his tools.
Megan was the daughter of one of the most respected wolves in the pack and she was also treated with so much respect.
He lifted his head to look at her and seeing her eyes, he burst into laughter.
“And what is funny?” She asked him, confused.
“You, Megan. You look really funny with those eyes.” He answered, still laughing and she frowned.
“Can't you be serious for once? You keep joking about everything.” She said, still frowning.
“I'm sorry, but you should have seen your face.” He replied, trying so hard to hold in his laughter.
“Don't you know how dangerous it is to go into the forest now? I mean, someone has been missing for days and could be dead or something, yet you want to go into that same forest to hunt?” She asked, almost screaming his ear off.
“Dead? Come on, Megan, don't talk like that. The warriors are searching for him and I'm sure they'll find him soon.” Steve said, shrugging as he continued with what he was doing.
“Really? Are you being serious right now? Do you want to get yourself killed?” She asked again, getting really concerned and agitated.
“Come on, Megan, you know this is not the first time I'll be going out hunting in the forest. It's just something I do for fun once in a while to clear my head. I assure you that there's nothing to be worried about.” He said to her with an assuring smile.
“But-” She tried to say something else to stop him but he was quick to get up and began to leave.
“Steve!!!” She yelled after him.
“I'll see you when I get back and I won't take too long.” He shouted, waving his hand in the air as he made his way out of the pack.
Megan watched on as his figure disappeared gradually from her eyes and she let out a huge sigh. It was obvious that she loved and cared about him but to him, she was just a friend and nothing more, but she was hopeful that one day, he would see that she loves him and will love her the same.
“One day.” She muttered and turned around to walk back into her house.
…
After a long moment of walking, Steve finally got to the forest and he immediately was on the lookout for anything. At some point, he didn't know what was going on with him because he just kept feeling the need to go deeper into the forest than he would usually go on a normal hunting day.
Everyone knew how dangerous it was to go into the inner and deeper part of the forest as a group, let alone going there all alone, but for some strange reason, he felt like the forest was calling him to go deeper and so he couldn't stop. He just kept going deeper and deeper.
As he walked further deeper into the forest, he kept remembering Megan’s warning voice in his head, but he just couldn't stop.
“Megan is going to get really mad at me if she finds out about this. I'm very sure about that.” He thought to himself as he kept walking.
*****
Veronica had been waiting painstakingly for a few hours, hoping that Scott would somehow show up with help, even though she knew how highly impossible it was. At the same time, she hoped that he was safe and had not fallen into the wrong hands while trying to get help for her.
“But why isn't he back yet? I just hope he is fine.” She said to herself, still holding on to her dislocated shoulder whose pain had now gotten worse in the past hours.
Although she tried as much as she could to hold the pain in, but as Scott stalled, it got to a point when the pain began to get unbearable and she soon began to groan in pain, silently and started to sob.
“What if he has been kidnapped?” She suddenly asked herself as the realization hit her that the worse thing she feared could have happened.
“He is young and won't be able to fight for himself.” She muttered and continued to sob, still holding her shoulder in pain.
Her last resort was to call out for help, despite the fact that she knew it would possibly be useless. She had decided to remain quiet since Scott left, for fear of attracting the wrong set of wolves to herself or to Scott, therefore, putting them both in danger, but now she couldn't wait anymore, else she was going to die there.
“HELP!!!” She screamed with all her might, and this increased the pain shooting through her shoulder and so she had to pause for a moment before calling for help again.
After gathering her strength once again, she screamed again, “HELP ME. SOMEBODY HELP ME.” And with this she got to her breaking point and was unable to scream so loudly anymore. She became weaker and could only shout faintly, barely loud enough for anyone to hear her but she didn't stop.
*****
Steve didn't realize he had been walking in the forest for hours until he looked around and realized he had gone so deep in. At that moment, he suddenly heard a voice faintly calling for help. At first, he thought he was hallucinating or it was a trap.
“Could this be a trap? Well, I just hope I'm not walking right into the trap. Or could this be some crazy stunt by these rogue wolves?” He whispered to himself as his senses stood at high alert, with his hand close to his quiver to allow quick access to his arrows.
Most of the rogue wolves have been known to make the deep part of the forest their hiding place because it was easy for them to ambush unsuspecting werewolves and hurt them. So, being alone in those parts of the forest was a very dangerous and risky thing to do.
He heard the voice once again and this time, he reached out into his quiver and swiftly drew out an arrow. He positioned it properly in the bow as he scanned the surroundings, ready to shoot anything strange on sight.
Shortly afterwards, the voice came again and this time around, he paid attention and immediately noticed that it was a female's voice, a bit cracked, calling for help around the area.
“Hmmm! Sounds like a female, I hope it's not a tactic, a plan to attack me when I least expect.” He thought to himself as he tried to trace the voice.
“Who is there?” He yelled authoritatively when he heard the voice again.
Finally hearing, Veronica gasped and covered her mouth with her hands, she could not believe that someone finally heard her. Judging from the voice, she knew it definitely wasn't Scott because the voice belonged to an adult and not a child.
Although skeptical at first because she wasn't sure if she was safe or in trouble, on the other hand, she just wanted to be out of the pit before nightfall.
“I don't want to spend another night in this pit. Once I get out of here, I'll try to escape by all means.” She thought to herself. “HELPPPPPP!” She screamed with all the strength she had left and Steve finally found where the voice was coming from.
He immediately ran towards the pit and saw her.
“Who are you? What are you doing down there? And how did you get there?” Steve began to question her.
“I'm Veronica, I…. I fell…I fell in when I was...” She began to stutter due to exhaustion.
“Hold on!” He interrupted her and ran off.
Chapter 21
***FIRE DAWN PACK***
~HOURS EARLIER~
The warriors finally arrived at the pack and the first person they met at the gate was Scott's father, Beta Richard. As soon as he saw them with his son who was still unconscious, he couldn't believe his eyes. He immediately ran towards them.
“Good afternoon, Beta Richard, we finally found him.” The leader announced as soon as they got to him.
“Thank you, thank you for finding my son.” He said, overjoyed as he took the boy from their hands.
He looked at the unconscious boy and back to the warrior, confused as to why it looked like he wasn't breathing, “Why is he not awake? Is he…?” He asked, uncertain of what the response will be.
“Oh, no, I think he is just unconscious at the moment. He became like this soon after we found him. I'm guessing he needs to….” He was yet to finish explaining when Beta Richard turned and headed to the hospital, running as fast as he could.
In just a few minutes, the members of the pack had gathered together, with some calling out to the others to come out to see what was going on.
“Go and tell the Alpha that we have found the boy and we're on our way to the hospital.” The leader ordered one of the other warriors who immediately ran to do as he was told.
With everything that was happening, word immediately got to Beta Lily, who had refused to leave her room ever since, almost drowning herself in depression.
“He has been found? Scott,? My son has been found? Are you sure about this?” She asked her maid who brought the news to her.
“Yes, ma'am. I'm sure. I saw him with my own eyes.” She replied. “He was with Beta Richard.” She added.
“Then what are we waiting for? Where are they right now?” She asked impatiently. “Take me there immediately.”
“They were at the gate when I saw them but I heard that they were heading to the Pack Hospital immediately.” She told her.
She immediately sprung to her feet and swiftly made her way to the hospital where her husband and Alpha Marcus were already waiting, pacing as they waited for word from the Doctor. As soon as Alpha Marcus heard the news too, he had hastened to the hospital to meet his Beta. Just a few minutes after he got there, Beta Lily arrived, running in.
“Where is he? Where is my son?” She asked, amidst sobs as she hugged her husband, who patted her slightly on the back, comforting her.
“Is he okay? Is he hurt? Did anything bad happen to him?” She began to ask again and this time Alpha Marcus was the one who answered her.
“He is unconscious at the moment but the doctors are attending to him, I believe they'll come out to give us some positive news very soon. Just stay positive, he is going to be fine, okay?” Alpha Marcus said, in a calming and soothing manner and she nodded.
Right after he spoke, the doctor came out and they immediately moved close to him. As soon as he saw Alpha Marcus, he bowed his head and waited for permission to speak.
“You can speak, Doctor. How is he?” Alpha Marcus said to him, impatiently.
“He is stable now. Aside from exhaustion and dehydration, he is fine, he just needs to rest for a couple of days.” The Doctor said to them.
“Really? Was that the reason why he was unconscious when we brought him?” Beta Richard asked the doctor, but the question shocked his wife.
“What do you mean? Was he unconscious before now?” She asked.
“Yes, ma'am. He was unconscious when he was brought in. He was lucky to have been found and brought here when they did, if they had stalled for a little moment longer, it would have been a different case entirely.” He said to them and Beta Lily's eyes widened and she covered her mouth with her hands at the realization that she could have lost Scott. She couldn't believe that she almost lost another child.
“Can we see him now?” Beta Marcus asked.
“Oh, not yet. We've administered some medications and he needs no disturbance at the moment. He needs a lot of rest like I said earlier, so this is not the right time for-” The Doctor tried to explain.
“We'll be quiet, Doctor. I promise. Please, just let me see my son.” She gently interrupted the doctor.
Seeing as her eyes were beginning to well up with tears, the doctor finally obliged.
“Okay, you can see him, but please you have to be quiet. He needs as much rest as he can get.” The doctor explained and they all nodded.
“Come with me then.” He said again as he led the way to the ward where Scott was.
As soon as his mother saw him, she broke into tears, sobbing silently. Her husband was quick to hold her, comforting her, while Alpha Marcus just watched on. They both walked to Scott's side and Beta Lily stretched her hands to Scott's head and smiled slightly as she felt his warmth.
At that moment, there was a knock on the door, leaving them a bit surprised.
“Are you expecting anyone?” Beta Lily asked her husband, who shook his head in response.
“I was about to ask you the same question because I'm not expecting anyone.” He said to her.
“Yes, come in.” Beta Richard said and the door opened and the leader of the warriors walked in.
He immediately bowed to Alpha Marcus who had his hands interlocked behind him.
“What is the matter?” Alpha Marcus asked him and he immediately moved close to his ears to whisper some words into it.
“Oh!” Alpha Marcus muttered and nodded, he then turned to Beta Richard and his wife, “I’m so sorry but I have to leave you both here to stay with him. I need to attend to some other issues.” Alpha Marcus said to them and they both nodded as he began to leave with the Leader of the warriors.
“Thank you, Alpha. I'll walk you out.” Beta Richard said and quickly followed him.
“You should go back in now.” Alpha Marcus said to him as they got outside.
“Okay, I'll see you as soon as we're done here and he is discharged.” Beta Richard said to him but he immediately shook his head in disagreement.
“No please, take your time. You don't have to come immediately. Other pack issues can wait, your son needs you both, so stay with Lily and take care of Scott. You all have been through a lot emotionally and mentally already.” Alpha Marcus replied immediately but as soon as he saw that Beta Richard wanted to object, he swiftly added, “AND THAT'S AN ORDER FROM YOUR ALPHA.”
With this, Beta Richard had no choice but to obey, smiling as he walked back into the hospital, to his son and his wife.
Chapter 22
~PRESENT MOMENT~
“I can't believe he left me here. I thought he was going to help me.” Veronica thought to herself, seriously heartbroken.
“Such a coward! He just ran off like a coward.” She muttered, sniffling, as she wiped off a tear which had escaped her eyes and sat back on the bare ground in the pit.
She felt so bad that right at the moment when she thought her salvation had come and she was about to be saved, it turned out that her saviour, for reasons best known to him, left her and ran off.
“Well, what am I living for then? No one wants me. No one wants to be associated with me. Am I that bad? So I really have such a bad energy and aura around me that people flee whenever they want to help me or be with me? Why do I keep getting into different misfortunes, one after another?” She had so many questions on her mind waiting to be answered but who exactly would answer these questions? She had no idea.
“I think I am really cursed. That is definitely the only way to explain all the misfortunes that have been coming my way lately.” She said to herself as she drowned once again in the pool of her own thoughts, thinking deeply, as it began to dawn on her that if nothing was done to get her out of there, her life would really end right in that pit and no one would even notice.
She was still deep in her thoughts that she didn't hear footsteps approaching. The next thing she saw was a thick rope being lowered down into the pit. At first she thought, her eyes were playing some weird pranks on her.
“Am I hallucinating now?” She thought to herself.
“Hey, do you think you can climb out with this rope?” Steve shouted to her, snapping her out of her thoughts.
“What…What did you say?” She asked, shouting back so that she could hear her.
“I asked you a question. I said, can you climb out with this rope?” He asked, shaking the rope for her to notice once again.
“I guess I can.” She answered him.
“Good, I'll hold onto it at this end for firmness, while you climb out.” She told her and she shouted “okay”.
As she got up and took hold of the rope with both hands, she screamed in pain, holding her injured shoulder.
“What is it? What happened? Are you okay?” Steve immediately asked, concerned about the way she screamed.
“I don't think I can climb out on my own. I can't do it.” She cried out.
“What?! Why?” He asked, taken back.
“My injured shoulder is hurting. I can't do this.” She cried as the glint of hope she started to have when he came back began to dissipate as seconds went by.
“You're injured? Oh! Why didn't you say something earlier? I had no idea.” He said to her. “You know what, hold on, I'll be right back.” He added and got up from the ground where he had been lying down and holding the rope.
He immediately looked around and found a tree where he tied one end of the rope and checked its firmness and strength, after which he nodded, satisfied.
He then went back to the edge of the pit, “Can you try to hold the rope with your other hand? Do you think you can do that?” He asked her.
“I'm not sure.” She replied.
“All you have to do is to hold the rope firmly with your uninjured hand, I'll pull you out, you don't have to climb.” He explained.
“Okay, I can try to do that.” She said.
“Alright then, let's do this. I'll be as fast as I can before your hand starts getting weak. Is that clear?” He said and she nodded and took hold of the rope after sighing loudly.
Immediately she held the rope, Steve swiftly got to work and began to pull as fast as he could and after what seemed like minutes, Veronica emerged from the pit and Steve quickly grabbed her by the arm before she slipped back in.
He pulled her further backwards till he slipped and fell and Veronica also fell on him, making him groan sharply from her weight on him. They both had their faces just inches away from each other and it was at that very moment that Steve noticed what beauty was right before him. Though a bit rough and injured, she was truly the definition of beauty itself even in that state. She looked simple yet gorgeous at the same time, with the right proportion of beauty at the right places. As they stared at each other, at that moment, it felt like time stopped.
Suddenly there was a ruffling sound which brought both of them back to their senses. Veronica, realizing that she was still on him, immediately got up, and winced in pain when she felt a sharp pain in her shoulder, after which total silence followed.
After a short moment of silence, Veronica immediately cleared her throat, breaking the silence.
“You came back for me?” She asked him, as soon as they both were finally able to put themselves together.
“Uh, isn't it obvious?” He said to her as he got up and began to loosen the rope he tied to the tree.
“I'm just in shock. Thank you so much for saving my life.” Veronica said to him and squeezed her face as she felt pain again but was quick to get over it.
“Why? Did you think I abandoned you earlier?” He asked her, surprised as to why she was shocked that he actually came back to help her.
“Yes, I thought you left too.” She said sadly.
Quite confused, he asked her, “Left TOO? What do you mean by that? Did someone abandon you before now?”
She sighed and smiled softly, “I don't want to bore you with that, besides, I don't even know who you are.” She said and he sighed.
He helped her sit on a fallen tree and sat a few inches away from her.
“I don't know you either. I’m not going to lie, I thought you were a rogue wolf at first.” He said, not looking at her.
“Was that why you ran away?” She asked him, making him turn to her, sharply.
“I never ran away. I needed to get this.” He said, raising the rope in his hand.
“Oh, you think I'll run away because of one female rogue wolf? Nah, I'd rather fight till my last breath.” He said with confidence.
“So you're a warrior?” She asked him.
“Uhm…Not exactly, not officially, but I learnt martial arts at a point in my life and I at least know how to defend myself against bad guys.” He replied.
“But you know, it could have been a trap.” She said again and he turned to look at her one more time, still captivated by her beauty.
“I mean, you said you'd rather fight ‘one female silver wolf’ than run away. What if it was a trap and the others just came out of nowhere?” She asked but he kept mute as he thought about what she said.
“At least that is not the case now, is it?” He finally responded and she smiled and he couldn't help but notice how beautifully set her teeth were.
“I guess you've changed your mind. So, what made you change your mind about me?” She asked him, looking at him.
“I didn't say I have changed my mind yet.” He uttered and she nodded.
“That's okay. I understand that it would be very hard for you to trust someone who you just met. I totally understand, but I assure you, I am not a rogue wolf. I just ended up here due to some circumstances beyond my control.” She explained to him.
“And I also want to thank you once again for saving my life. If you hadn't come back for me, I don't know why my fate would be by now. I'm really grateful.” She appreciated him and he responded with a slight smile.
“I'm Steve. What about you?” He introduced himself.
Chapter 23
“I'm Veronica.” She replied.
“I guess it's nice to meet you?” Steve said to her, unsure of the right words to say.
“Yeah, I guess.” She said with a little smile at the corner of her lip.
“So, tell me, how did you find yourself here?” He asked, looking around but she kept mute. “I mean, this is not the kind of place that anyone would love to be just for the fun of it, right?” He added and she nodded without saying a word.
“So? Were you hunting or something?” He asked her with furrowed brows but she still didn't answer. “Even though I highly doubt that that is the case.” He added, shrugging.
“Really? Why?” She asked, turning to him.
“Well, you look nothing like a hunter to me.” He stated, taking a good look at her physique from her head to her toe and right at that moment he noticed what he had failed to notice since his encounter with Veronica.
“Oh my goodness, you have bruises all over!” He exclaimed, shocked. “How did I not notice?”
She smiled as she also took a good look at herself and saw what he was talking about. She truly had bruises all over, with blood stains, and some parts of her clothes were torn.
“So, how did you end up in that pit that I got you out of?” He asked her. “You still haven't told me, you know.” He added and she sighed.
“Why do I feel like you intentionally don't want to answer the question. Are you hiding something? Should I be safe?” He asked as he turned to face her, squinting his eyes.
He suddenly gasped dramatically and got up, “Are you a serial killer? You're a rogue wolf, aren't you?” He asked with his eyes wide open and his hand swiftly went into his hunting bag and pulled out a sharp knife.
At the sight of the knife, Veronica immediately became scared.
“Of course not!” She replied sharply. “I'm not a serial killer, I'm nothing like that, trust me.” She immediately defended herself.
“Trust you, you say? I've been asking you a question, but you seem like you are intentionally avoiding it. How can I trust you?” He replied, looking at her sternly.
“I swear to you. I am not a dangerous person.” She defended herself again.
“Okay, then how did you get into the pit? He asked, and continued, “because if you are as innocent as you claim, you won't be-”
“I went in on my own!” She blurted out, interrupting him.
“What?” He couldn't understand what she was saying because he didn't see any sense in what she had just said.
“I said I went in on my own.” She said again.
“I heard you the first time. It just doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, how does someone suddenly jump into such a deep pit on their own? It makes no sense at all.” He said as he tried to understand her.
“I had to go in to save someone.” She said, looking at Steve who looked like he didn't believe any word of hers.
“You had to... Your words are getting twisted somehow, you just said you went in on your own and now, you're saying you had to save someone.” He said, looking confused.
“If you were trying to save someone, I think I'm supposed to find you and the person. I'm sure I'm not blind because I saw no one in that pit except you. I'm beginning to blame myself for saving you now, because it seems like you're a walking ticking time bomb.” He continued, angrily pacing.
“Why do you keep lying? You look too innocent to be lying! What exactly is going on, because I just don't get it and I can't believe I was actually beginning to trust you! Is your name even Veronica?” He questioned her angrily, as he was now getting frustrated.
“Yes, my name is Veronica and I promise you, I'm not lying to you.” She said as she began to explain herself.
“The thing is, I've been in the forest for some days now. I met someone who, while trying to find his way, got lost and I promised to help him. As we went out yesterday in search of something to eat, on our way back, he fell into the pit and became unconscious. There was no way to get him out without going in myself, which was what I did.” She narrated.
“So, you stayed all night in that pit?” Steve asked.
“Yes, we did. He finally woke up this morning.” She replied.
“How come I didn't see him with you?” He asked her.
“Well, he got out.” She answered.
“How? How did he get out and you remained there?” He asked her.
“Well, when I wanted to go into the pit, I used a rope. So, he was able to get out with the rope.” She answered.
“And why didn't you get out with the rope too?” He inquired.
“It snapped. I asked him to go out first because the rope couldn't support both our weights at the same time. He climbed out first and as I was about climbing, halfway through, the rope snapped and I fell back in. That is what affected my shoulder.” She explained to him.
“Oh, I see.” He muttered to himself. “So, where is he now?” Steve asked her.
“I have no idea.” She shrugged. “He said he wanted to get me help. That was the last I heard from him. I've not seen him ever since. I don't know if he has been kidnapped, hurt or in some kind of danger.” She said, worried about Scott.
“Or maybe he found his way back home?” Steve suggested but Veronica found it hard to believe and so she remained quiet. “Did you come from the same pack?”
“No, I said I met him in the forest, or better said, we met in the forest. I think he mentioned his pack to me but I can't remember what he called it anymore. How silly of me!” She said, biting her lip. “I just hope he is safe around here somewhere.”
“Well, I doubt he is still in this forest though. I have a feeling that he is safe. IIf he was still around here somewhere, he would be calling for help and I would have seen him before I got to you, don't you think?” He said again and this time, Veronica gave it a second thought and only hoped that Scott was safe wherever he was.
