Chapter 39
“Tr…Trey?” Megan stuttered as soon as she saw him at the door.
“Yeap! That's me!” He answered proudly, with so much excitement, making Megan wonder why he suddenly showed up there.
“What are you doing here?” She asked, still shocked.
“What do you mean? Isn't it obvious?” He asked, shrugging.
“That what?” She asked him, getting a bit uncomfortable.
I came to see Steve, of course.” He replied, rolling his eyes at her.
“Did he tell you…” She suddenly paused and rephrased her question. “Did he know you were coming?” She asked him again.
“Well, not exactly.” He answered, raising an eyebrow.
“So? Why are you here?” She inquired.
“I tried calling him but I couldn't reach him and so I came here, regardless.” He replied and blinked multiple times before speaking again, “Wait, what are all these questions for? Can you move out of the way? I need to go in.” He said, looking a bit offended, but Megan refused to move out of the way.
“Steve is not in. Maybe you can come back some other time.” She said, ensuring her body was properly blocking the entrance so that Trey wouldn't be able to go in, neither will he be able to see anything.
“What?! Why should I come back some other time when I can just wait inside until he gets back?” He asked, furrowing his brows.
“I'm sorry, but nope, you can't wait inside for him.” She refused.
“What is wrong with you? Why are you so territorial? This isn't even your house.” He said, almost yelling at her.
“Neither is it yours!” She snapped at him.
Trey was their ‘not-so-close’ friend. Although they all grew up together, and we're closer when they were younger. Trey had now become a lot more different from who they used to know him as. He used to be someone who was worth emulating but now, he was the complete opposite. He began to change as they grew older and Steve was quick to notice and so he decided to distance himself from him so that he wouldn't influence him negatively.
He was funny, selfish and covetous. To cap it all, he had a loud mouth and loved to womanize. He was always caught up in one mess after another and he always got away with it. This was one of the many reasons why Steve didn't really like him anywhere around him and made him not so close to Trey.
With him in Steve's house at that moment, Megan knew it was going to be problematic. She hoped greatly that Steve would be back soon before Trey suspected anything but she hadn't even had time to think too much when he suddenly spoke again.
“I'm beginning to think you're hiding something.” He suddenly said to Megan who was taken aback by his words.
“Wh…What do you mean by that? She stuttered as she responded.
“With the way you're stuttering, I think I'm right. What are you hiding?” He said confidently.
“You must be out of your mind to think I'll answer. I don't answer to you, take your leave immediately.
“I'm not leaving here until I go in and see what you're hiding.” He said and attempted to go into the house but Megan stood her ground and refused to allow him entry.
“There's nothing to see here. Steve is not in. Just leave!” She shouted at him but he refused.
“If you're sure Steve is not in and you're not hiding anything, get out of my way and let me check it out myself. If he isn't in, I'll leave.
She snickered and said, “You must be a clown, if you think I'll let you go into someone else’s house when the person isn't in. Why the hell are you looking for him?” Megan shouted at him.
“It's none of your business. Get out of my way before I drag you out this instant.” She snapped at her.
“You wouldn't dare! You wouldn't try it.” She said, confidently.
“You’ll watch me as I drag you aside and go in right now if you don't get out of my way.” He threatened once again but Megan was determined not to let him in.
She couldn't let him in, not because Steve wasn't but because if he found out that Steve was harboring a stranger in his house, it was going to be a very great disaster. The whole pack would hear of it and this could put, not only Steve, but including her and Veronica, in big trouble.
This was something she wasn't going to allow to happen, so she was ready to fight Trey, if worse comes to worse and if there is a need to. Anything to prevent him from going into the house, she was ready to do it.
“I don't want to believe that Steve has become so cowardly that he'll send you, a female, to face me. So, he can't face me by himself.” He said and laughed mockingly, thinking that Steve was not confident enough to face him and was sending Megan to him instead.
“Just keep that mouth of yours shut and leave here. I have already told you that Steve isn't here. What else do you want?” She yelled.
“And I said I won't leave until I have checked inside the house and confirmed that he truly isn't in. You think you can fool me? Nah, it won't work.” He said, and laughed again, making Megan frustrated.
Hearing all that was going on outside the house and how Trey was adamant, Veronica became scared because she realized that the person outside was not ready to back off. He was so determined to come in that he was willing to push Megan out of the way.
She began to look around, searching for any place which could serve as a hiding place for herself in case Trey came in and began to search the whole place.
Fortunately, she was able to move around because of the drugs Megan had given to her earlier.
She thought about hiding in the bathroom but she felt it was a plain sight,
“Anyone who comes in here will see me immediately.” She thought to herself.
“What if I lock the bathroom door from inside?” She asked herself but immediately shook her head as if disagreeing with herself. “That would raise suspicions. I can't do that.” She thought to herself again.
“Get out of my way!” Trey said as he pushed Megan aside and she immediately lost her balance and fell to the ground.
“Just look at you. You have no strength, yet you want to face me.” He snickered and then opened the door.
While Veronica was still hurriedly looking for the perfect spot to hide, she heard the sound of the handle of the door as it made a creaking sound.
“Someone was coming in.” She thought to herself as she immediately held her breath and covered her mouth with her hands as she froze in a corner of the room.
As Trey was about to take a step into the house when a voice stopped him,
“What the hell is going on here?” It was Steve's deep voice from behind them and Megan immediately sighed in relief while Trey stared at him in shock.
Chapter 40
“Trey? What do you think you're doing? Are you insane?” Scott asked him as he rushed to Megan who was still on the floor.
He carefully helped her up and watched as she dusted her clothes with her little handkerchief. When she was done, he faced Trey.
“How dare you, Trey? How dare you come to my house and harass my guest? Huh? How dare you?” Steve angrily yelled at him.
“I'm sorry, man. I came looking for you and she said you weren't in. I thought that-” He tried to explain himself but Steve wasn't having it at all, he cut him off.
“And you couldn't call me before coming? What do you have a mobile phone for? For decoration or for what?” He questioned.
“I tried to do that, but your line wasn't connecting. In fact, I called you countless times but I still couldn't reach you.” Trey explained but Steve wasn't interested in what he was saying till he spoke again.
“You know, for a moment, I thought you were intentionally avoiding me. I could have sworn by the moon goddess that you intentionally didn't want to speak to me.” Trey continued blabbing.
“And why would I do that?” Steve asked.
Trey laughed in a sly manner and moved closer to Steve, “We both know why you would do such a thing.” He whispered into Steve's ear, making Steve angrily push him away from him.
At that moment, what Steve was feeling was beyond what he could explain properly. It was sort of a mixed emotion; like it was a mixture of anger, rage and fear. Anger that Trey had the effrontery to show up at his house and try to force his way in even when he had been told that he wasn't in.
And most especially, FEAR! Fear that Veronica could have been exposed, had Trey gone into his house if he didn't get home right when he did. Steve tried as much as he could to compose himself and not allow Trey's words get to him.
“So, tell me, when she told you I wasn't in, why didn't you leave immediately?” Steve asked him and Trey hesitated for a moment before answering him.
“Well, I thought she was lying. I thought that maybe you were in the house and she didn't want me to see you.” Trey answered.
“Are you even listening to yourself, Trey? Do you know what you sound like? You sound like a clown, Trey! Like a child! What the hell!” Steve shouted at him.
“Come on, man. I said I thought she was just lying to me. Are you going to blame me for thinking that Megan lied to me? How would I have known that you weren't in? How was I supposed to know?” Trey said in his defense.
“That's where common sense and courtesy comes in.” Steve snapped at him. “If someone tells you that whom you seek is not home, courtesy demands that you leave immediately even before they ask you to.” Steve said further.
“Why would you even think she was lying to you in the first place?” He said and scoffed. “Well, I'm not surprised, you still haven't changed. A leopard really never changes its spots.” Steve said with utter disgust as he shook his head and hissed, while Trey just stood there staring at him.
“Anyway, I apologize.” He managed to say, without remorse, after a few seconds of silence. “I didn't know you weren't in. If I had known, I wouldn't have done what I did, honestly.” He apologized, but with every word that came out of his mouth, Steve’s anger just kept increasing.
Steve thought for a moment before speaking again, “Hold on a minute, What if I was in?” Steve asked him again. “What if she didn't want you to see me? Or what if I was the one who instructed her to tell you that I didn't want to see you? Is that enough reason for you to harass and manhandle her in this manner?” He inquired while Trey stood there, a little bit ashamed to look him in the eye.
“I'm sorry, Steve. I have apologized but I don't know why you're still angry. I don't know what else you want me to do. I said I didn't mean to do what I did.” He said plainly.
“I just thought that you could have-” He said again but before he could finish, Steve angrily interrupted him.
“By the way, why are you even here? What are you doing here? What did you come here for?” Steve bombarded him with questions and for a moment, Trey didn't know which of the questions to answer first.
“Yo, bro. Calm down. I mean no harm.” Trey said with a stern look on his face.
“I am not your bro!” Steve snapped at him.
“Well, fair.” Trey muttered and nodded his head slightly.
“Anyway, I just came to say hi to you.” He finally found an answer to Steve's numerous questions.
“On what grounds? For what reason?” Steve asked him, his face showing how irritated he was.
“Nothing at all. I just felt that it had been a while and I should just say hello and we could catch up for old times sake.” He answered. “Or can't I come to say hello to a ‘friend’?” He asked but Steve could hear the contempt in his voice and so Steve glared at him, irritated.
“Catch up for…?” Steve scoffed. “You must be out of your mind.” He hissed, “You know what? I've heard enough and I've had enough of your bullshit! Get lost!” Steve yelled at him.
“What?! You're asking me to get lost? You're sending me away? Is it because of her? Really, Steve?” He asked, unable to believe his eyes and his ears too.
“Yes, really! Get the hell out of here before I lose my temper!” Steve barked, while Megan stood aside.
“You're really unbelievable.” Trey chuckled, “Wait, are you really sending me away?” He asked, as if to be sure his ears were still properly working.
“Do you need me to physically tell you to get lost with a punch in your face?” Steve asked, coldly as he clenched his fist, and moved closer to Trey, who immediately stepped back and raised his hands in surrender as he smiled sourly.
Hearing what Steve had just said, Megan hurriedly went to hold his arm because she knew that with the way things were going and with how angry Steve was at that moment, it was only a matter of seconds before he would throw a punch at Trey and this would only make matters worse.
Megan understood what Trey was trying to do and she didn't want Steve to fall into his trap.
“Pay him no mind. You know he is always up to no good. Just leave him alone. Let him leave in peace.” Megan said to Steve who stil had his fists clenched, waiting for the right opportunity to punch Trey in the face.
“He just wants you to do something wrong so that it can be held against you. Don't give him that satisfaction.” She said to him as she still held his arm, not letting go.
“Leave, Trey!” She shouted at him and he turned and began to leave.
He had only walked a few steps when he turned back to them and began to say the words which Megan dreaded the most. What she feared was about to happen.
“You know, I would have been a little bit angry too if something like this had happened in my house, maybe not as angry as you are now, though,” he began, “which makes me wonder what exactly is going on. Like what is all of this pent-up anger and rage for?” He asked with a raised eyebrow, with the sole intent of causing a stir.
“Stop it, Trey! Just leave! What the hell is wrong with you?” Megan screamed at him as she stood in between Trey and Steve.
She then turned to Steve, whose shoulders were now tensed, his jaws clenched as he gritted his teeth as he glared at Trey, “Don't listen to him, Steve. Don't.” She said, holding him back as she tried to calm him down, but Trey was making it extremely difficult, with his actions and words.
“Why? Am I saying anything bad here?” Trey said mockingly.
“Oh wait, don't tell me, you're still angry because of what happened back then.” He said again and Megan yelled his name but he still refused to stop talking. “Come on, Steve, it was all fun and games.” He said again, laughing mockingly as he watched Steve’s rage increase with every single word of his mouth.
“Can you believe that I still remember that night like yesterday?” He snickered. “I remember how she was screaming, though I still feel like she was enjoying it as I was-” He couldn't finish his statement because Steve freed himself from Megan's grip and his clenched fist landed straight on Trey's face, breaking his nose and sending him to the ground in pain, instantly.
Chapter 41
Megan screamed in shock as she saw what had just happened, while Trey curled up into a ball as he winced in pain on the floor. People who had been watching the whole drama from afar soon began to come closer.
“Oh my goodness, are you okay?” Megan asked as she crouched beside Trey who was bleeding from his nose and mouth.
“Ahhhhhh.” Trey kept screaming as he held his face in his hands.
Megan turned to look at Steve who was still glaring at Trey like he still wanted to tear him apart.
“Steve, we need to take him to the hospital. He is bleeding so much.” Megan said, panicking, but he didn't budge.
“You can take him to the hospital or anywhere, I don't care about this bastard. He got what he deserved.” Steve said and angrily walked off into the house, leaving Megan and Trey outside.
As Steve opened the door and entered the house, he shut it behind him and rested his head on the door, facing it as he thought for a moment but as he turned around and was about to make his way into the room, he was shocked and he stopped right in his tracks.
He was met with Veronica who was standing right in front of him in the living room. With the look on her face, he was sure that she had either seen all that happened or heard it all, but he wasn't sure. He could only hope that she didn't see or hear so much.
“Wha…what are you doing here?” He stuttered, whispering, and immediately locked the door with the key.
He was shocked to see her in the living room and not in the room, because he didn't expect that she was going to be there at that moment. He was also shocked that she could now walk without anyone's help.
Veronica’s eyes travelled from his face and fell on his now wounded hand. He had sustained a little injury when he punched Trey in the face and it had started bleeding a little bit.
“What if I wasn't the one who came in?” He asked again, still whispering and pulled her by the hand back into the room.
Back outside, Megan was giving the wounded Trey an earful,
“I told you to stop, didn't I? But what did you do? You just kept on running your mouth. Now, look at you. You never listen.” She complained and hissed.
She then signalled to some of the people who stood around, watching, to help her get him to the hospital.
“I don't even know why I'm doing this, especially after what you did to me earlier. You're such a crazy person.” She complained again and Trey grunted as they helped him up and got him into Megan's car.
She then drove off to the hospital to get him treated.
After a moment of silence between Steve and Veronica, she asked,
“Why did you get into a fight with your friend?”
“He is no friend of mine. That bastard is NOT my friend!” He snapped, and Veronica shook.
“I'm sorry.” She apologized calmly. “Let's get your hand treated then.” She said and went to get the first aid box.
She then began to clean his hand and after she was sure it was properly clean, she applied treatment and covered it up.
“Thank you.” He said to her, and she nodded in response and put the first aid box away.
They then sat in silence. They both had something to say to each other, but just didn't know how to say it or how to start the conversation, so they resorted to silence.
Steve finally broke the silence, “Are you not going to ask me what happened?” He asked.
“Well, I tried.” She answered, shrugging.
“Look, I'm sorry for snapping at you like that. I just wasn't in the best place and I didn't suddenly get into a fight with him. He started it. In fact, he asked for it and he got what was coming to him.” He replied.
“He has a terrible attitude. He was overbearing and doing too much, okay? I just did what I had to do to shut him up.” He said in his defense and Veronica sighed.
“But you are not any different now, are you?” She said, not looking at his face.
He turned to look at her, asking, “What do you mean by that?”
“He provoked you, you fell into his trap, and punched him in the face. That, if you ask me, makes you the same. That's if you won't be tagged as the bad one.” She replied, looking at him briefly and looking away.
“You saw everything?” He asked her, a bit surprised.
“Yes, and I heard everything.” She confirmed and he squeezed his face, a bit disappointed in himself. “Well, maybe not everything though.” She chipped in, “because I didn't hear what he whispered into your ear.” She added.
“Yes, he provoked you but I still feel you could have walked away no matter how angry you were.” She said.
“It's not as easy as it sounds, really. It's deeper than you think.” He muttered inaudibly, making sure she didn't hear him clearly.
“At least, Megan tried to stop you. You should have just asked away, honestly.” She told him.
“In any case, anyone would blame you because you were the one who threw the punch instead of walking away like a gentleman, not him.” She said and paused for a moment.
“Look, I don't know what you both had going on in the past but I don't think this is really good. I'm afraid this whole thing might get you into trouble too because he is the victim now.” She continued.
He squinted his eyes and said with a slight smile, “Don't tell me you care about me now.”
“Can you stop joking? This is a serious matter.” She frowned, but to Steve, she looked cute because this was another person, aside Megan who seemed like she cared so much about him. He didn't have a lot of them in his life and so he was grateful.
“This can be a serious issue.” She continued, “What if you're summoned by your Alpha?” She asked and he cleared his throat and stopped smiling at the sound of what she said.
“How would you defend yourself because as it is now, all odds might be against you. Many people might not see or hear him when he said something to provoke you but they definitely saw the punch and the aftermath. Who do you think they'll defend if they are asked?” She said and Steve could only sigh.
“Anyway, I guess I just have to keep my fingers crossed as I wait and watch how this whole thing unfolds.” He said calmly.
Megan, on the other hand, arrived at the hospital and Trey was immediately taken in for quick medical attention.
Seeing Trey's bloody face, the doctor couldn't help but ask, “What happened?”
Megan hesitated for a while before answering, “He got in a fight.”
“What? I didn't do anything wrong. He just punched me in the face.” Trey disagreed with Megan.
“It seems you're not in much pain, seeing as you're still running your mouth.” Megan said with a sneer and he glared at her.
He then turned to the doctor and asked him, “Is it really bad?”
“Yeah, it is.” The doctor replied, “your nose seems to be broken.”
“Oh no!” He lamented. “Can it be fixed? Can it be treated? Can it go back to normal?” Trey kept asking anxiously.
“It depends on the severity but I can assure you that we'll try our best to fix it. But for now, we need to take you in and begin treatment immediately.” The doctor replied.
“Megan! Tell him that he won't get away with this. I'll see to it that he gets what he deserves.” He shouted at her, despite the pain he was in. “This is not the end, this is definitely not.” He cried out.
“Let's take him in.” The doctor ordered the nurses and they prepared to wheel him into the hospital on a stretcher.
As soon as the doctor was done talking, Trey swiftly picked his phone from his pocket and he immediately dialled a number and started reporting the case to whoever the person was, as he was being wheeled into the hospital, while Megan just watched on as she bit her lip for fear of what was likely going to happen.
While Steve and Veronica were waiting in silence, they heard a knock on the door and Veronica shook right where she was sitting.
“I guess this is it.” Steve said as he got up to go and open the door. “No matter what happens, make sure you don't leave this room.” He warned and she nodded sadly as she watched him head for the door.
“Who is there?” Veronica heard him ask as he approached the door.
Chapter 42
“Who is there?” Steve asked as he approached the door but he got no response.
He sighed, closed his eyes for a brief moment, and gradually opened the door. And as he slowly opened the door, the door was suddenly pushed in and Megan barged in.
“Yo! Calm down.” Steve exclaimed, a bit relieved as he watched her go in, while he still stood at the door.
“Why did it take you so long to open the door?” She asked him, frowning.
“Well, I didn't know it was you at the door since I didn't think you'd get back so soon.” He answered, shrugging.
“What do you mean by that? Were you expecting me to sleep in or start living in the hospital?” She said, with a bit of sarcasm.
“I don't know, you could have decided to.” He replied with sarcasm too and she glared at him.
“Who were you expecting though?” She asked, suddenly remembering that he said he wasn't expecting her to return so soon.
“Anyone else, but you.” He replied with furrowed eyebrows, after which he locked the door and walked into the living room, while Megan followed closely behind him.
“Anyone else? Like who?” She questioned him as they walked.
“I don't know, Megan. Anyone else! Don't you know Trey anymore? He could have decided to blow it out of proportion.” He answered her, a bit frustrated by her numerous questions. “In fact he might be doing so as we speak.” He added.
“So you know what Trey is capable of , yet you decided to…” She stopped and took a deep breath before she continued. “Why then did you allow him to push you to the wall like that? To the extent of punching him in the face!” She lamented. “You could have just avoided him and walked away but NO, you chose to fight!” She complained further.
As they got into the living room, she began to pace angrily, while Steve sat in one of the single sofas in the living room, his eyes following her back and forth as she kept pacing.
Tired of watching her pace without saying anything, he finally spoke, “Megan, can you stop pacing?”
“What are you even pacing for?” He asked her, “because I don't even understand.” He continued.
“Are you really asking me that?” She asked angrily.
“Well, I'm confused, I don't know what you're pacing for. Maybe if you calm down, stop pacing and explain, I'll be able to understand what all this is for.” He replied.
“I'm scared.” She said, as she stopped pacing and started staring at him.
“Scared of what?” He asked her, looking confused.
“Of what might happen, Steve. I don't know what to think at this point.” She answered, wondering why he was still calm.
“Why are you just staring blankly like that? Don't you get it?” She asked, nervously.
“Look, Megan, I'm confused. I don't even know what you're talking about. How am I supposed to react when I don't even know what is going on.” He voiced out in a frustrated manner.
“It's almost as if you're speaking in parables. Maybe if you speak in clear terms, I'll understand you.” He said again.
“It's Trey.” She said,
“And what about him?” He asked her.
“Before I left the hospital, I saw him making a call and reporting the incident. I don't know who he called because I was not too close to him, but I don't have a good feeling about it.” She replied and began to pace again.
Steve immediately sat up as he heard what Megan had just said and asked, “Who do you think he called?”
“Sincerely, I have no idea, but you know how sly Trey is. He could have called anyone, but trust me, he will definitely call someone he knows would get you in trouble, I'm sure about that.”
“You're right.” Steve muttered and began to think hard.
“What do we do now?” She asked, almost panicking.
“There is nothing we can do, Megan.
“Are you just going to wait here for anything to happen? You know the son of who Trey is, don't you?” She asked him.
“Of course I know.” He answered her, still trying to think.
“So, why are you so unbothered? I really don't know what you're trying to prove with this action of yours but I don't think it is a good idea!” She yelled at him.
“And what would you have me do?” He shouted back at her, frustrated. “What would you advice me to do? To run away?” He asked her and she became quiet.
“I'm not going to run away like a coward. I'm going to stay here. I don't care what happens.” He muttered and Megan just shook her head in disbelief.
***ALPHA’S PALACE***
Beta Richard rushed into the Alpha's inner court without knocking, leaving Alpha Marcus in shock.
“What is going on, Richard? You couldn't even knock?” Alpha Marcus asked as he jumped to his feet.
“I apologize, Alpha. I just couldn't wait any longer.” He swiftly apologized and tried to catch his breath.
“What is the matter? What is it that couldn't wait and you had to rush in as if war broke out. Or is there a war?” Alpha Marcus questioned him further.
“No, Alpha. There is no war but this is something different.” He replied and paused a little, leaving Alpha Marcus in suspense.
Alpha Marcus then heard some voices in the main palace and had to ask,
“What is all that noise?” He asked but Beta Richard still didn't say anything.
“What is going on, Richard? What the hell is all this suspense for? Out with it, damn it!” He yelled at him.
“It’s Elder Raymond.” Beta Richard answered.
Elder Raymond was one of the elders who made up the council of elders of the pack. The members of the council of elders were one of the most important sets of people in the Fire Dawn pack. Their role was totally different from any other member. Their job was to give advice and guide the Alpha in some seemingly difficult situations, and so they were well respected. They would only come to the palace whenever they were summoned or when it was necessary or they had some important discussions or information for the Alpha.
“And what about him? Is he here to see me?” Alpha Marcus asked Beta Richard.
“Yes, he definitely is here to see you.” He replied with a weird look on his face.
“What is it? Is he here in regards to pack matters?” He inquired about Elder Raymond’s visit.
“I wish that was the case but no, the reverse is the case. He is totally furious. He is in a rage as we speak. I don't think I have ever seen him like this. Beta Richard said, hesitantly.
Taken aback and confused, Alpha Marcus asked him, “Furious? About what? Why? What happened?”
“Apparently his last son is hospitalized as we speak.” Beta Richard answered.
“His last son? Trey? The one who just came back recently?” Alpha Marcus asked, trying to remember.
“Yes, Alpha, that one.” He said, nodding his head.
“What happened to him? Was he sick?” He asked Beta Richard.
“From what I was able to gather from those who were present, I was told that he was punched in the face.” Beta Richard replied and Alpha Marcus frowned.
“Is that enough reason to want to tear the whole place down? Just because of a punch?” Alpha Marcus said, mockingly. “Why didn't he throw his own punch to retaliate or defend himself?” He said again and hissed. “Just because of a punch, he is fuming.”
“I'm afraid it's beyond that. Reports say that his nose was broken.” Beta Richard announced and Alpha Marcus couldn't believe his ears, his eyes widened in shock.
“Who could have done such a thing? How dare he hit the son of an elder? Such a person should be punished immediately.” Alpha Marcus said angrily but Beta Richard had an unsettling look on his face.
“That is where the problem lies.” Beta Richard muttered and Alpha Marcus turned to him.
“Who did it?” Alpha Marcus asked him and after littles hesitation, Beta Richard answered,
“It’s Steve.”
***********
AT STEVE'S HOUSE
Steve sat, still thinking hard, while Megan paced in silence and Veronica, who still remained in the room all the while, per Steve's instructions, hoped and wished desperately that Steve wouldn't get into trouble because of what had happened.
They were all in their own worlds when suddenly there was a loud bang on the door and they all jerked up as they snapped out of their thoughts all at the same time.
Megan and Steve exchanged glances before he asked,
“Who is there?”
“Your presence is needed at the Alpha's palace this instant.” A loud deep voice answered immediately and Veronica's eyes widened where she stood beside the room door.
“The Alpha says if you don't follow us gently, we are permitted to bring you to him by any means possible.” The voice added and Megan’s mouth fell open.
Chapter 43
“I'll be right behind you.” Megan said to him as he walked towards the door, but Steve shook his head and refused.
“Don't! I already have an idea of how the whole thing will pan out and I don't want you there.” He said to her firmly, and she nodded as he calmly opened the door and without questions, followed the guards who had come to pick him, while Megan watched as he was being taken away.
As they left, Megan sighed and went back into the house. She dropped herself on the sofa in frustration and worry as she stared into thin air, that she didn't notice that Veronica had come out of the room.
“What do you think is going to happen to him?” Megan whispered beside her, startling her and she jerked back to reality.
“I scared you, didn't I?” Veronica asked.
“Uh, yeah.” Megan answered softly and Veronica sighed.
“I'm sorry.” Veronica said. “How do you feel?” She asked her.
“Honestly, I don't know how I feel. I'm just kind of scared and frustrated.” She confessed and Veronica sighed again.
“I don't even know what to do because something like this has not happened in recent times.” She added.
“Is there anything we can do to help?” Veronica asked again.
“No, he doesn't even want me to go with him to the Alpha's palace.” Megan answered.
“Really? Why?” Veronica asked.
“I think it's because of the Alpha.” She answered.
“But why? Is the Alpha ruthless?” Veronica asked her again.
“Well, the Alpha is…” Megan suddenly paused as she remembered that Steve hadn't told Veronica that the Alpha was his father yet. “You know what? Forget about that, let's just hope that he will be fine.”
“Okay, if you say so.” Veronica answered.
**AT THE ALPHA’S PALACE**
“Elder Raymond, I sincerely apologize for everything that has happened.” Alpha Marcus began to apologize to Elder Raymond as soon as he walked out of his inner court into the palace with Beta Richard beside him.
“What is the meaning of this, Alpha Marcus? Why would Steve do such a thing?” Elder Raymond yelled angrily.
“Sincerely I don't know what came over him but I have summoned him. They should be here soon or any moment from now. Please, I apologize on his behalf.” Alpha Marcus apologized once again but Elder Raymond’s anger didn't seem to subside.
“You really should talk to your son. Is this how he is going to start acting when he eventually becomes the Alpha of the pack? What if it was more than what it is right now? What if he had actually killed Trey?” Elder Marcus asked him, rage written all over his face.
“What?!” Alpha Marcus was taken aback by Elder Ray’s words. “No, please don't say that. No one is killing anybody.” He said. “Please just forgive him. I assure you that he will be punished accordingly.” He added.
“If anything happens to my son, I promise you, the entire pack will not have any peace, no matter how small.” He threatened and left in anger, not waiting for Steve to be brought in.
But as he stepped out of the palace, the guards arrived with Steve, who had a blank expression on his face. Elder Raymond glared at him like a wild animal wanting to pounce on its prey. He stared at him for a moment and walked away right after, while the guards led Steve in and the onlookers watched from afar off
The guards brought Steve to his knees in front of his father as soon as they entered the palace and left afterwards, leaving Steve, Beta Richard and Alpha Marcus alone. Seeing Steve, Alpha Marcus’ anger was rekindled.
Alpha Marcus, his face red with rage, towered over Steve, who was still on his knees. “How dare you do such a thing, Steve! How could you?!” he bellowed, his voice echoing off the walls. Steve cringed, paying no attention to his father's words. He remained on the spot, not moving and not saying any word too.
“Do you have nothing to say? Are you not going to say anything at all? Nothing meaningful?” Alpha Marcus asked angrily, seeing as his son still refused to say anything.
“Why should I say anything when it is already obvious that you're going to take someone else's side?” Steve finally spoke to his father, glaring at him with dangerous eyes
“Steve!” Beta Richard yelled at him, trying to caution him.
“Leave him, Richard.” Alpha Marcus held out his hand and Beta Richard kept quiet. “Allow him. Let him talk, he has to tell me what got into him!” Alpha Marcus said again.
“I'm sure it could have been a misunderstanding between two young men.” Beta Richard said, trying to make the atmosphere a little less tense.
“Misunderstanding, you say? What sort of misunderstanding allows you to hurt someone else? What if he killed him?” Alpha Marcus asked angrily.
“Well, at least he is not dead.” Steve suddenly said in a very annoying manner.
“Steve!” Beta Richard yelled his name again and Steve frowned and kept quiet.
“Alpha, let's just ask him to apologize to Trey, maybe-” Beta Richard tried to suggest but Steve kicked against it completely and immediately.
“Never!” Steve yelled, interrupting Beta Richard even before he could finish talking. “I'll rather die than apologize to that miserable bastard!” He spat angrily.
“Can you listen to that, Richard? Can you see that he has no iota of remorse?” Alpha Marcus said, in disbelief.
“Please calm down, Alpha. Let's just ask him what happened then.” Beta Richard pleaded.
“No way!” Alpha Marcus snapped at him. I'm not going to ask him any questions. I'm very sure he is at fault. Can't you see it? He has no visible injury, aside from his hand, which he obviously used to punch the poor innocent young man.” Alpha Marcus stated and Steve scoffed, annoying his father more.
“Innocent young man? Innocent? You must be kidding me.” Steve said and paused.
He then continued, “Well, I don't blame you for supporting him. Supporting another man's son over yours? I'm not surprised. I mean, what do I expect when your characters are alike. All you ever do is hurt unsuspecting close people who trust you with all they have and-”
He had finished speaking when his father's hand shot out, palm open, and connected with a loud smack on Steve's cheek. The force of the resounding slap sent Steve's head snapping to the side, his eyes watering from the sting.
Steve's face burned with pain and shame as he struggled to process what had just happened. He felt a wave of anger and resentment wash over him, but it was quickly replaced by a different feeling.
Tears pricked at the corners of his eyes as he looked up at his father, searching for some sign of understanding but his father's face was hard and unyielding, his eyes blazing with fury and so he blinked the tears back in.
Steve's cheek throbbed with pain, and he could feel the imprint of his father's hand lingering on his skin. He knew he'd wear that physical mark of this encounter for a few days to come, a constant reminder of his father's anger.
Even Beta Richard was too shocked to say anything. His mouth just remained open as he had not seen such a thing ever unfold. He had never seen Alpha Marcus ever raise his hand on Steve and he had never seen Steve speak to his father in such a manner before, so the whole thing came as a shock to him.
After the slap, came complete silence. And as the silence in the palace stretched out, Steve felt a sense of disconnection and isolation wash over him. He knew his father was going to punish him but he didn't care, he was ready for whatever he brought his way.
“Guards!!!” Alpha Marcus yelled angrily and about three guards rushed in at the sound of their Alpha's obvious anger.
“Take him away and lock him in the dungeon until I say otherwise!” He ordered and they all stood in shock.
“Have you all gone deaf?” He barked at them and they quickly picked Steve up from the floor.
“I said take him away this instant!” Alpha Marcus ordered angrily and Steve was taken away, to be thrown into the dungeon until the Alpha says otherwise. And as he was taken away, he glared at his father.
“Don't you think that's too harsh? I think you're being hard on him?” Beta Richard asked, as the guards left, in concern for Steve.
“Well, he should have thought about the consequences of his actions before going around breaking noses.” Alpha Marcus replied and hissed.
Beta Richard tried to speak on Steve's behalf again but Alpha Marcus spoke again, “He is going to be the future Alpha of this pack, he needs to start acting like one now! My decision is final!” Alpha Marcus said on a final note and with that, Beta Richard had no more words.
Right at that moment, a guard rushed into the palace, panting heavily. Alpha Marcus and Beta Richard exchanged quick glances and looked back at the panting guard.
“What is it? Why do you look so rough?” Beta Richard hurriedly asked him, seeing as he truly looked rough.
“F….Fi… Fire!” He stuttered and began to cough.
“What? Fire? Where?” Alpha Marcus and Beta Richard asked in unison.
“The market at the southern gate. IT IS ON FIRE AS WE SPEAK!” The guard shouted and began coughing again.
