Chapter 4
"The pain of the broken mate bond is tougher than I thought," Beck said to himself.
He tried standing up but fell almost immediately, “I am going to be the Alpha of this pack in less than three days, I can't be this weak because of a broken mate bond.” He told himself as he began to try to get up again.
He forced himself to stand up and sucked in the pain. He took a couple of steps and almost fell down but held on to the nearest tree he could touch.
The walk to the pack house was quite far because he had to get Veronica to a place where no one would see or hear him rejecting her and now it had blown back in his face, because he had to walk a very long journey before he could get back to the pack house.
He endured the pain throughout the walk and began thinking of how his Father and Blue, his sister, would react to what he had just done. Well, his father would most definitely have nothing to say, while Blue, his little sister, on the other hand, would be so glad. She didn't like Veronica anyway and she hated the thought of her being his mate.
“Blue really does not like Veronica, and I will never know why she hates her so much." He said to himself, “Well, maybe it's for the same reason that I rejected her too- No one wants a weak Luna!”
Pain seared through him from the broken mate bond as he got to the pack house. He looked around the bustling pack center, his eyes searching for the familiar figure of Veronica.
Veronica’s beauty was the type that wasn’t hard to miss and on more than one occasion, they have had some attacks from some nearby wolves and other creatures because of how attractive she was.
But that was the problem! Being that beautiful and weak was too trouble-seeking and bothersome. He had dreams of expanding the pack when he became the Alpha. They could make as many rogues as possible, submit to them and join the pack.
“A man like me, destined to stand above others, couldn't have a Luna that was as weak as Veronica.” He murmured.
When the pain tore through him one more time, he clenched his fists tightly, determined to not let it show.
He looked up at the sky and the cloud was still covering the Moon. For two years, he had tried to overlook his thoughts of Veronica being really weak. It was one thing for her to be an omega, and it was another thing for her to be weak but she was both; an omega and a very weak one at that. That could only mean one thing- A DISASTER!
“You should lead the full moon celebrations tonight with Ben,” His father’s voice rang out from behind him, interrupting his thoughts.
“Okay, dad.” He responded.
He was going to be announced as the new Alpha in less than three days. His father asking him to lead the celebrations wasn't a surprise. And since Ben was going to be his Beta, it was just perfect.
" And where's that thing?”His father asked, with disgust.
“What thing, dad?” He asked, pretending not to know what his father meant.
“Glaring at him, his father spoke further, “You know what exactly I'm talking about. I haven't seen her since she left the pack house with you earlier today." He said, his eyes sweeping through the pack grounds.
“She might be around somewhere, we got back a long time ago.” Beck lied.
“Where did you go, though?” His father asked, searching his eyes for answers.
“Nowhere serious. We just had a walk.” He lied again.
“Why do I feel like you are lying?” He said, raising his eyebrow.
“I'm not, dad. Like I said, we only went for a walk and we got back a while ago.” Beck replied.
He couldn't understand why he kept lying about Veronica, it was not like his family wanted her anyway but he just found it difficult to tell anyone that he had rejected her because he knew they would mock him since they had warned him and showed their displeasure and disapproval right from the start, but he was just being so headstrong. If he was going to tell them, it would definitely not be that night. He had to keep the pretense up and not let anyone find out, at least, not yet.
“Well, I don't care if you both went for a walk or not. With the news of you becoming the next Alpha in just a few days, I'm sure you know what to do already, because there is definitely no way that that thing will be accepted in this pack as the Luna. The earlier you get that, the better for you!” His father said.
After three years, everyone in his family had increased their hate for Veronica and the thought of her becoming one of them was dissatisfying. His mother was very reluctant to accept Veronica right from the start, despite hearing every single convincing word from Beck about how being an omega didn't matter. She would definitely have mocking comments about him if she ever found out that after professing his undying love and support for Veronica, and being adamant all those years, he finally succumbed.
Breaking the news about their broken mate bond at that moment was not going to be an easy task. Though it is something they all had longed for, it still wasn't going to be easy for him to say it after being stubborn in the past years.
His father had ruled the pack for a hundred and fifty years and in those years, he had made sure that the omegas were treated differently from the others. Even where they stayed was different from the others.
" I understand, Father," He said to his father as he walked away.
His eyes soon began to scan the vicinity in search of Veronica, because knowing Veronica, she'll eventually show up after a couple of hours but he needed to see her first because they had to have a little discussion.
“She mustn't talk to anyone about our broken mate bond, so it'll not affect my Alpha position.” He thought in his head.
Ben and two others walked up to him and not long after, all the thoughts of Veronica had long gone to the back of his mind and all that mattered were his Alpha duties.
" Where's your Veronica? I thought she was with you?" Ben asked, smirking. It was obvious that he wasn't asking about her because he cared for her but was trying to tease Beck.
“Can't I just take a break from Veronica?” He thought to himself.
“Since when do you take a break from Veronica?” One of the two other guys asked, and they all, except Beck, burst into a mocking laughter.
Beck's mood went down and he could feel the pain of the broken mate bond again.
" Beck, are you okay?" He heard Ben ask him.
" Yeah, why?" He said, looking up to see a worried look on Ben and the two other guy's faces.
" You look like you're in pain." Ben said as he stared at him intently.
“Oh no, did I accidentally let the pain pass through my face? That's not good. They should never know about the broken mate bond.” He thought to himself again.
" Oh, I hit my toe on the chair, nothing to worry about," He lied. “It seems like lying is not hard for me to do today.” He thought to himself as he realized how smoothly he had been lying ever since he got back from the woods.
" Oh, okay. Well, If I had a beauty like Veronica as my Mate, I would give offerings to the Moon goddess every day." Damion said, as he bit his lips, showing his obvious interest in Veronica but this irritated Beck, who glared at him like he was going to tear him to shreds in just a minute.
“With the fact that she's an omega?” Beck asked him.
“Of course not!” He snapped back.
" Exactly, what's the point of being so beautiful but weak? I mean, she can't even beat Henry, our weakest wolf in a hand to hand combat or wolf form," He said, his emotions and thoughts getting the better of him.
The group became silent as he stood up, no longer in the mood to talk to them anymore.
" But you knew that all along l, didn't you? I mean she is weak but she is still your mate." Ben said, looking at him.
" And why should I have a weak mate? Is that who you want as your Luna? Someone who can't protect herself from danger and risks other wolves' lives just to save hers? Answer me, is that who you want as your Luna?" He snapped at Ben, his voice a little loud, causing some people to look over at their table.
Ben didn't say anything and neither did the other boys.
“ I can't let them suspect that I did anything right now, at least, not until I talk to Veronica.” He thought to himself as he impatiently waited for Veronica to show up.
" Sorry, I'm just a little stressed and worried that I might not be able to protect her." He lied and they sighed.
“Well, I was never in support from the start, you have just been so adamant and I do not know why.” Ben said, shrugging, “I guess she is your baggage and you just have to carry it.”
“I don't think so anymore.” Beck murmured but they all heard him.
“What do you mean?” They asked in unison but instead of answering, Beck looked up into the night sky. Confirming that the moon was at its strongest already, he stood up and signaled to Ben to do the same.
“It's time.” He said.
Beck and Ben climbed up the platform that had been built just for the ceremony and his eyes scanned the crowd one more time for Veronica but even up until most members of the pack had transformed and howled into the night sky, he didn’t see her familiar frail figure.
" Help, someone please help, I can't find Veronica! I think she has been kidnapped! HELP!!!” Kiera suddenly cried out as she ran towards them.
Chapter 5
Pain, that was the first thing Veronica made sense of. “Ouch! My head hurts, what happened?” She asked no one in particular.
She tried lifting her right hand to touch her forehead but noticed that she couldn't feel her arm.
“ What's this? I can't feel my arm. Come to think of it, I can't feel my body, I can't feel anything, except for the pain in my head.” She thought to herself as different conversations kept flooding her mind.
“ Did I hit my head hard on the floor when I fell?” Was I supposed to feel pain when I lost my mortal body?” She asked herself, with the lowest voice possible, making it impossible for anyone to hear her, except for the movements on her lips.
She tried to open her eyes but her vision was blurry, but after a couple more blinks, she could see clearly. She noticed the white ceiling and then looked around the room. It was painted in white and yellow, with the yellow shining almost brighter than the sun and the white, as snow.
“ The afterworld sure is beautiful. Veronica mumbled and tried to get up.
“Veronica! You're awake!” A familiar voice rang out, and she snapped out of her thoughts to see Kiera, who looked overjoyed.
“ Kiera? When did you die?” She asked, surprised to see her.
“ What are you talking about?” Kiera asked her, looking confused.
“ I mean, what are you doing in the afterlife?” Veronica asked further.
“ I'm not dead and…” Kiera began but before she could finish her words, Veronica spoke again.
“ Wait, if you didn't die, then how did you get into the afterlife? Are you some kind of spirit or…” She stopped and gasped," A white witch?” Her eyes widened.
“ Shut the fu*k up, I'm not a spirit or a white witch. I told you to stop listening to Tom's silly talks about witches and all that. I guess you hit your head hard on the floor for you to be blabbing about the afterlife and all that. I don't understand what afterlife you're talking about. And Vee, you're not dead.” Kiera explained.
“ What are you talking about, how am I not dead? I should be dead, right?” Veronica asked.
“ You're not dead! Now please, stop talking about dying, you're scaring me,” Kiera said, tears building up in her eyes.
“ If I'm not dead, then what happened? I passed out in the woods that were off limits and was attacked by some rogue wolves but surprisingly, I managed to chase them away but I guess I passed out right after.” Veronica narrated her ordeal as she remembered it.
“So how am I not dead or at least injured?” She asked and checked her body for any injuries, but there were none.
“ Wait, what? You were attacked by rogue wolves and you chased them away? All by yourself?” Kiera asked, almost screaming.
“Yes, that's what I remember.” She answered Kiera, who still had her eyes wide open, like they were about to pop out of their sockets.
“But how? Are you sure you are not hallucinating?” Kiera asked, trying to confirm if she knew what she was saying.
“ It's a long story, I'll tell you later.” She said and Kiera nodded.
“So, I'm not dead?” She asked again.
“ No, you're not.” A male voice was heard. She immediately knew who it was and she felt downcasted.
“ You gave us quite a scare, especially Kiera,” Beck said with a soft laugh.
“How can he laugh when my emotions are like a rollercoaster right now, all because of him?” She thought to herself without saying a word.
“We searched for you all over the pack. We found your scent at the back of your house after two hours of searching and followed it into the woods.” He explained.
“ I'm assuming the 'we' is you and Kiera?” She asked.
“ If it was just Beck and I, we wouldn't have found you on time,” Kiera said with a look of panic in her eyes. “ Beck made many people search for you, if only you knew how many people searched for you.” She added.
“ Could you give us some time? We have something important to discuss,” Beck said, looking at Kiera with a smile on his face.
“ Oh, sure, take your time,” Kiera said, shutting the door behind her.
“ How are you feeling?” He asked.
“ Rejected.” She answered, avoiding eye contact with him.
“ Is that why you ran off into the dangerous part of the woods?” He asked.
“ I didn't know where I ran to, I didn't want Kiera to see me like that, so I ran into the woods that were behind my house.” She responded.
" Hmmmm.” He sighed and an awkward silence filled the room right after.
“ If that's all that you wanted to ask, you can please leave now. I'd like to rest,” She said, breaking the silence and attempted to lay back on the bed but stopped midway when she heard him speak.
“ That's not why I came.” He said.
“ Then why did you come?” She asked.
“ Have you told anyone about… you know, what happened between us last night in the woods?” He asked, lowering his voice as much as he could.
“ About you rejecting me?” She asked and he nodded, “As you can see, I just woke up and a few minutes later, you barged in.”
“ Okay, but don't tell anyone about it, or it…” He was speaking, but Veronica cut him off before he could finish.
“ Or it could affect your position as the Alpha of our pack, right?,” She said, finishing his statement, leaving him unable to speak further. “ Yeah, I thought about it and you're good, I won't say anything to anyone.” She lied through her teeth because, even if she wasn't going to tell anyone, it definitely won't be Kiera. She was definitely going to tell her.
“ Okay, get well soon.” He muttered.
“ Why do you care? You rejected me,” She said and the pain came at her with full force again and she flinched.
“Why am I still feeling pain? The pain should have gone, but why am I still feeling it?” She thought to herself as she sucked it all in.
“ I… I have my reasons.” He said.
“ What reasons? I know it's because of you, becoming an Alpha and me being a weak Omega, but I just can't wrap my head around it.” Veronica said as she tried to fight the tears that were about to pour out of her eyes.
“ Why?” She asked, as the tears finally came rushing down.
She waited for Beck to say something, to at least give a meaningful explanation for his act, but nothing came out of his mouth. She looked up at him, only to find him staring at her with emotions that she could not explain, flashing through his eyes.
“ Get better soon.” That was all he said and left.
In less than five minutes, Kiera came back in, and Veronica broke down in tears immediately she saw her.
“ Oh my, what happened? I saw Beck leave here with a strange look in his eyes, and I came in here only for you to break down like this?. What is going on? What happened? Talk to me, please.” Kiera said in one breath.
Veronica didn't answer her and just kept crying like a baby. After a while of crying, she explained what happened with a runny nose.
“ WHY THAT LITTLE PIECE OF SH*T!
How dare he reject an angel like you? I'll go give him a piece of my mind!” Kiera screamed, and immediately stood up, wanting to go out and cause a scene.
Veronica immediately held Kiera by the waist, preventing her from moving. “Don't. Please don't go, I'm fine, I promise.” She assured Kiera.
She sighed and asked,” Are you sure?”
“ Yes, I am. So please don't go, you're the only person who listens and helps me and…and I need you.” Veronica answered in a solemn voice.
“ Well, I can't beat the soon-to-be Alpha of our pack, I'd be too crazy to do that, but for you, I think I would,” Kiera said, turning to look at her with a smile, as she wiped her tears.
Veronica could not help but burst into laughter at Kiera's words, “ Yeah, I know.”, She said, still laughing.
“By the way, have you seen my phone? I can't seem to find it anywhere.” She asked, looking at Kiera.
“ Here you go, sweet cheeks. Mrs. Park saw it on the floor behind the pack house, lucky you, I was there to collect it from her before she could go through it. You know how nosy she can be. You're welcome.” She said and handed the phone over to Veronica.
“Aw, you're the best, what would I ever do without you?” She said, hugging her tighter.
“ Indeed, what would you do?" Kiera said, as she hugged her too.
“Thank you for always being there for me. I don't think I can ever survive without you.” Veronica said as they both remained in each other's embrace.
Chapter 6
It had now been a week since Beck rejected Veronica and no one knew about it except her, Beck and Kiera. Kiera wanted to confront Beck about it, but Veronica begged her not to because he didn't know that she knew about it.
“ Wow, what a lovely day to sleep and not wake up for a while,” Kiera said, looking up at the sky, as they passed by the children's park.
“ What do you mean by that? Don't ever say that, please. If you go, who would I talk to or where would I find anyone who would listen to me complain about everything all day long?” Veronica snapped at her.
“ Relax Vee, I'm not going anywhere, at least, not anytime soon, silly,” Kiera said, laughing. “It was just a harmless joke.”
“A harmless joke? Really? Who jokes with something as serious as death?” Veronica snapped at her again.
“Hey, chill. I never said anything about dying.” Kiera replied.
“To sleep and not wake up means what?” Veronica asked her, obviously angry.
“Fine, I'm sorry. Like I said, it was just a joke.” Kiera apologized.
“ Please don't joke about things like that ever again, okay?” Veronica said, squeezing her face.
“ Yes, ma'am,” Kiera said with a mocking tone.
“ I'm serious.” She said, with a stern look on her face.
“ Okay, fine, I've heard you, I won't say things like that again. But weren't you the one who was talking about being in the afterlife and all that?” Kiera asked, teasing her and trying to make her calm down.
“ That was because I thought I was dead!” Veronica yelled at her.
“ But you weren't, you were just in the room.” Kiera responded.
“But I didn't realize that!” Veronica exclaimed and began to walk away.
“Vee, wait! I'm sorry.” Kiera screamed, and ran after her.
“ Veronica, Kiera, wait up.” A voice called out to them.
Kiera and Veronica both turned their heads to the back and saw Tom running after them. Tom was their friend and he was an omega too.
“ Argh, what do you want, Tom?” Kiera asked, looking at him with annoyance.
“ I got bored sitting at home and playing video games all day, so I thought I should come outside and take a walk until I saw you both.” He explained, “So, where are we going?” He asked.
“ We?” Kiera asked, looking at him before turning her head to look at Veronica. "What do you mean by 'we’”?
“ I mean 'we', the three of us.” He said, looking from Kiera to Veronica.
Kiera looked like she was about to pop out of anger, making Veronica smile.
“I don't really know why you don’t like Tom. I mean, he is sweet and kind and he lets me play his video games and win.” Veronica whispered into Kiera's ear and she gave her the side eye.
“ Tom, you see, we're no fun, we just want to take a walk around town, get some ice cream, and go back to our rooms, burying our faces in our phones,” Veronica said, trying to convince him to let them be.
“ It's okay, I don't mind.” He responded and Kiera began to grumble. She was about to talk, but Veronica held her mouth and all that could be heard from her was mumbling as she was being dragged away from Tom, while Veronica smiled at him.
“ What? Why didn't you let me talk?” Kiera asked as they stood away from Tom.
“Can't you see that the poor boy is lonely and has no one to talk to besides the two of us? Veronica replied.
“Well, I don't care!” Kiera snapped back.
“Come on, Kiera. Can you at least be nice to him just this once? Please?” Veronica pleaded with her cute eyes and Kiera had no choice but to oblige.
“ Fine, but just this once.” Kiera said, and Veronica nodded.
“Okay, just this once. Thank you.” She replied as she hugged her.
“I really don't know why you are so excited. Do I sense something fishy?” Kiera said and Veronica rolled her eyes.
“You wish! Come on, let's go. Let's not keep him waiting for too long.” She replied as she dragged Kiera along to meet Tom and they began their walk around town.
It had now been thirty minutes since they all left to go get ice cream from their favorite ice cream shop. They took a walk around town a little more, but after a while, Tom got tired of walking around and went back to his apartment to continue playing his video games.
“You think Tom's going to be okay?” Veronica asked.
“ Why'd you ask?” Kiera asked her.
“ You said a lot of mean things to him, if I was in his shoes, I wouldn't be okay. I think you should go apologize,” Veronica said, looking at Kiera with a serious look.
“ But i-” Kiera tried to protest but was cut off by Veronica.
“ Don't try to justify your actions,” Veronica said, not letting her speak.
“ But still I don't think i-” Kiera was cut off by a scream that came from outside the ice cream shop.
“ What was that?” Veronica asked, visibly shaken by the noise and commotion. They both immediately took cover under the table.
The crashing of glass and aggressive growls from deep within their chests were heard next.
“ Wait, I feel like I've heard that growl before,” Veronica said, as she tried to remember where she heard it from. She looked up from under the table, only to meet eye-to-eye with the brown and gray wolf she fought and chased away in the woods about a week ago.
She immediately lowered her head, hoping they didn't see her. She could hear them getting closer to where her and Kiera were. She silently prayed for them not to come any closer.
It was like the Moon goddess heard her prayers at that moment, because they immediately heard clawing and growling from other wolves that were fighting with the rogue wolves.
“ We better get out of here,” Kiera said, holding her hand as they carefully started making their way away from the scene, crawling on the ground, so they wouldn't be noticed or seen. As they crawled away silently, they found a couple of dead omegas on the floor and Veronica held her breath, trying to prevent herself from crying and putting both her and her friend in harm's way.
They successfully left the vicinity and started running for their dear lives. Halfway to their apartments, some rogue wolves came out of nowhere, and Veronica immediately recognized them as the ones who were running away from her in the woods the last time.
“ Stay behind me,” She said to Kiera, holding her hand and pulling her behind her. “ They're not going to hurt us. Well, me, but I won't let them hurt you.” She said, leaving Kiera so confused.
“ What do you mean they won't hurt us or you? I don't know what you are talking about, I'm confused because as you can see, they are rogue wolves, they hurt or kill anything they see.” Kiera whispered holding her clothes, “We're underdogs, we can't take them, so we better run for our lives if we want to live.”
“ They are the rogue wolves I said were running away from me the night of the full Moon festival.” Veronica whispered back to her.
“ Oh, I see. But I still suggest we run because they don't look too friendly.” Kiera said, still whispering.
“Do you think they won't chase us if we start running now? That's just the easiest route to die.” Veronica whispered to her, getting frustrated. “Let's just try to go silently, if we run, we'll make matters worse.” She added and they started walking as gently and silently as possible.
Veronica was careful and steady with the wolves growling and barking at them. They had almost gone past them wolves when all of a sudden, one came right at them and took hold of Kiera's left leg.
Kiera cried out in pain as the rogue wolf was dragging Kiera by the leg, roughly, while Veronica was pulling her to herself with her hand.
The other rogue wolf ran towards them and started slashing Kiera's stomach and body with its claw.
“ Stop it, get away from her,” Veronica screamed and kicked the wolf who had been slashing Kiera's body, before doing the same for the one that was pulling her leg. They both winced due to the force she used to kick them.
She then turned around to look at Kiera, who had cuts and was covered in her own blood. She couldn't stop the tears that were pouring out of her eyes at the sight of her friend in the pool of her own blood.
“ Just hang on, you're going to be fine.” Veronica said and looked up to see some wolves who were watching what was happening, "Help me, someone, please help us!” She screamed for help, but it seemed like they were too scared to come to help them or they were not interested in helping her because she could hear them whispering and saying different things about her.
“It's all her fault.” One wolf said.
“Yes, I think she is cursed.” Another wolf concurred.
“ Just look at her, all this happened because of her!” She heard another one say and all she could do was wail.
She looked back at Kiera,” You're going to be fine, okay? Just hang in there.”
She tried lifting her, but she screamed out in pain.
“ I'm sorry, I'm sorry,” Veronica said, crying even more for causing her best friend more pain.
She turned her head to see the rogue wolves staring at her. She looked at them, confused as to why they weren't doing anything but just staring at her.
“ Vee.” Kiera called her, weakly.
“ Yes?” She answered, turning back to look at her.
“ I'm… I'm sorry for…” Kiera began.
“ Don't talk, please, save your strength, you're going to be okay.” Veronica immediately stopped her from talking.
Smiling at her, "I apologize for leaving you…like…like this.” Kiera said, coughing out blood.
“ I told you not to talk. You're not going anywhere, you can't leave me, please.” Veronica said, as tears kept pouring from her eyes.
“ I will always love you, and you will always be my best friend in whatever life we may find ourselves in," Kiera said, as tears rolled down her closed eyes and at that moment, Veronica could no longer hear her heartbeat anymore- She had passed away.
“No!!!!!!!!!!” Veronica howled in pain as misery enveloped her.
Chapter 7
"No," Veronica screamed as she carried Kiera's lifeless body on her lap.
"Kiera, please don't leave me. " She muttered like a crazy woman.
She sobbed, tapping her cheeks to see if a miracle could happen. Maybe she would wake up smiling at her and say it was just a prank. She could not bring herself to believe that the only person that understood her was gone.
She dropped her lifeless body on the floor and stood up. She then turned to see a rogue wolf launching at her but instead of running, she didn't run because she just wanted to die alongside her best friend. As the wolf got closer, she shut her eyes, waiting for his attack.
"Guess this is it, Veronica. You are finally going to the afterlife, but at least, this time, you'll be seeing Kiera." She said to herself
as she waited for the wolf to launch at her, but instead of being attacked, she heard a loud thud.
She opened her eyes only to see the rogue wolf on the floor groaning in pain. She saw Beck's wolf clawing the rogue wolf's body and he snapped the head off its body.
Beck's wolf advanced towards her, snarling his teeth as if warning her to run away from there but when he saw she wasn't listening to him, he transformed into his human form.
"Are you weak and stupid at the same time? Can't you run? What if he had killed you? Why can't you run, instead of standing here like a fool?" He said angrily
"They killed her. Those bastards killed her," She said, as she felt the tears coming once again.
"They killed who?" He asked her.
He looked behind her and saw Kiera's lifeless body lying on the floor covered in blood.
"And so? Is that why you are standing here like a fool and wanting to get yourself killed too?" He said, with so much insensitivity.
Veronica couldn't believe her ears, and at the same time, she could, but didn't want to believe it was true. She just wanted to die with Kiera.
"People do change, don't they?" Veronica said as tears trickled down her cheeks.
"Look Veronica, I..."
"Beck please," She interrupted him. “I just want to be alone for now.”
She forced her legs to move, but they were too weak because she was still in shock. Her head was spinning like a wheel and before she could move again, she collapsed and became unconscious.
After a few hours, she woke up in a room. The gray and silver colors and beautiful paintings on the wall instantly reminded her that she was in Beck's room.
“How did I get here? Hmm, my head hurts, what happened?" She asked as she tried to sit up when a maid came into the room. She had short dark hair, pale white skin, and dark brown eyes. She immediately recognized her to be Evy.
"Good morning. Beck told me to check up on you. I heard what happened, I'm so sorry for your loss." She said looking so sad.
"Where is Beck? " Veronica asked, ignoring all that she had just said.
"Beck is in the pack meeting." Evy responded.
“Pack meeting and I'm not there? What happened?” Veronica asked, and immediately remembered what happened.
At that moment, she told herself not to cry and to be strong instead, because that would be what Kiera would have wanted her to do.
"You can't get up, the doctor said you need a lot of rest," Evy said, as she tried to stop Veronica from getting up.
"I will rest in my own home," She said to Evy and stood up.
“Beck said we shouldn't let you out of his room, and I think you should rest." Evy protested.
"I'm tired of talking, I need to go home,” Veronica said and pushed her out of her way slightly, and went out of the room.
She was walking down the corridor when she heard Beck's voice in one of the rooms so she decided to eavesdrop.
"We haven't been attacked by rogue wolves in a while, so I just wondered what would have caused this." She heard one of the pack members saying.
"I think so too, our pack has been peaceful for years. I wonder who would have lured them here?" Another said.
"It's Veronica.” A member said.
"You mean the omega that is Beck's mate?" Veronica heard the Alpha say.
"Yes, She is the one." She heard the same voice that accused her again.
"It has always been this weak creature. Why can't she stay in one place for once?" another member said.
"She has caused too many troubles since the day she set foot into this pack. It's like she's a trouble magnet or something.”
She heard the voices of the other members agreeing to what the person said.
"Alpha, I think we all should agree that she must be punished for the bloodshed that she caused." The same member said.
"How did you know that she was the cause of the attack?" Beck asked, trying to defend her.
"Knowingly or unknowingly, cause or not, she shouldn't have gone to the part of the wood that was off limits. Now see the bloodshed she caused because she made a silly mistake." A member said.
"What was an omega doing in the forest anyways?"
" That doesn't matter right now. What matters is, what punishment are we giving to her, Alpha?" A member asked.
"I don't know for now." The Alpha, Beck's father responded
"We need to banish her from this pack before she causes any more trouble." A member suggested.
"Don't you think banishing her is a bit too much?" Beck asked.
"We understand that she is your mate but you have a whole pack depending on you. " The Alpha said.
"I will think about the punishment to give her," Beck said.
Veronica didn't know when she began to sob loudly and everyone in the council heard it.
“Who's there?" A loud male voice asked but Veronica ran back into the room she had come out from, locked the door, and started sobbing her heart out.
“Why does everyone here hate me so much? I didn't go there intentionally.” She muttered.
She hated the fact that Beck watched and listened to them accuse her of being the cause of the attack when he knew very well that he was the one who made her go there, to begin with.
She soon heard a knock on the door, but she decided to ignore it.
“Veronica, open the door," Beck said, banging on the door. “I know you were listening to the meeting, the punishment hasn't been decided yet.” He tried to explain.
“It has," She heard the Alpha's voice from behind Beck.
“You are hereby banished from The Sun Crest pack. Leave immediately!” He thundered.
Chapter 8
“You are hereby banished from The Sun Crest pack. Leave immediately!” His voice reverberated through the hallway as he spoke.
“If you are found anywhere close to this pack, the worst things will befall you.” He threatened.
At that moment, it seemed like Veronica could not hear properly. It was like she had suddenly gone deaf. She turned to look at Beck, hoping that he would at least plead with his father on her behalf but looking at his face, he didn't seem surprised at all. He looked indifferent.
She fell to her knees in front of Beck's father, grabbing his feet.
“Please Alpha. If I leave here now, I have nowhere to go. You know I have no family to call mine. Please.” She pleaded as tears rolled down her cheeks.
“And how is that my business? Do you know the number of problems and havoc you have caused in this pack since you stepped in here? You have done enough damage to last us a couple of years and so, my decision is final. Leave! We do not want you anymore. You are just bad news!” He screamed at her, yanked his feet from her grasp and walked away.
“Please. Have mercy on me. I promise you, I won't go out any longer. I will stay quietly in my house all day and I'll do whatever you want me to do. Please don't send me away like this. Please.” She begged for his mercy, loudly, even as he walked away, but all her pleading fell on deaf ears.
Seeing that he no longer listened to her and had walked away, she decided to turn to the only one who she thought would have actually had a change of heart and beg his father for her, to at least, let her stay, even if she had to live like a piece of furniture, doing nothing important.
She rushed to hold Beck's feet this time around and wailed as she begged him,
“Beck, please. Help me beg him. Help me plead with him. If you send me away like this, I'm going to die. You know I am not strong at all. You know how weak I am, please.”
“Oh, so you now know that you are nothing but a weak omega?” Veronica heard Blue, Beck's sister, say, as she walked proudly towards them.
“Well, permit me to tell you, in case you didn't realize before now, that you are not just weak but you are worthless and useless too.” She hissed. “News flash, father's decision is final! The earlier you begin to pack all those useless belongings of yours and leave here, the better for you.” She spat.
“Don't you get it? No one wants you. No one likes you! You're different from all of us in a very bad way. Even your hair is different from ours! Urrggghhh!” She said with so much irritation in her voice.
“What were you thinking? That my brother would marry you and you'll become his Luna? Over my dead body! Not during my lifetime will I ever let that happen! Never!” She screamed at Veronica.
“Beck, please.” Veronica managed to weakly say but he looked away.
“You see? He doesn't want you.” She mocked.
“Guards!!!!” She screamed and immediately, about five guards showed up.
“Throw this THING out of here.” She ordered and immediately, the guards began to drag her away.
As they dragged her out, she looked at Beck one more time but this time, he turned his back on her and walked away.
Veronica could not believe that the same one who had professed his undying love for her would turn his back on her. She never imagined that such a day would come that Beck would not care that she was about to be thrown out the pack, knowing well that she had no family anywhere and no place to go.
As they got to the pack's gates, the guards threw her out like a piece of unwanted and worthless rag, like a piece of sh*t and she fell to the ground with a thud. As she fell, she felt a tingling pain in her right ankle, but she paid no attention to the pain. Her bags came flying at her, as they were thrown at her, right after.
“The next time you show your useless and worthless face in this pack or anywhere close to this pack, you'll regret the day you were born.” One of the guards said, with so much irritation.
“Let's go in.” He said to the others and they followed him as they walked back into the pack, leaving her all alone to whatever befalls her.
She remained seated on the bare ground as she processed what her next line of action should be.
“What exactly is my offence? What did I do to deserve this from Beck? Is it a crime to be an omega? Or is it a crime to be helpless? What did I do so wrong?” She cried out.
“Where do I go from here now? I don't know anywhere. I don't know who to run to? I have no one!”
The only person who would have been by her side right now, Kiera, was dead, and now, all hope seemed to be lost. She looked at her luggages, it was a small, black, leather backpack with white stripes. That was the only thing she could boast of as hers. The little backpack had the few clothes that she had.
She tried to stand up but fell back on her butt and screamed in pain. Her foot was hurting, and it was at that moment that she remembered the pain she earlier felt on her ankle when she was thrown out of the pack by the guards.
Back on the ground, she examined her leg, trying to massage different areas, to be sure of where the pain was coming from. The moment she applied pressure on her ankle, she screamed in pain and immediately withdrew her hand. She soon realized that it was beginning to swell up.
It was also beginning to look like it would get dark in a couple of hours, and she definitely needed to find a safe place to stay, at least for the night, before she began her journey early the next morning.
She decided to try to get up once again. Enduring the pain of her swollen ankle, and putting pressure on her other leg, she got up, picked her bag, and after turning around to look at the Pack's gates one last time, she began to limp away.
