Chapter 24
After ensuring Veronica could be trusted, Steve finally took his seat and sighed, “You’ve really been through a lot in a short period of time.”
“Uhm…I'm sorry for calling you a liar the other time. I just didn't couldn't understand. I hope I didn't hurt you and you'll find a place in your heart to forgive me? Please.” He said to her as he sincerely apologized.
“It's fine, really. I mean, I guess I would also act the same way if I found a strange unknown person in the forest too.” She said, making light the already tense atmosphere and Steve chuckled.
“Are you okay though?” He asked her with a concerned look on his face as he looked at her wounds once again.
“A little sore, but I'm fine, I guess.” She answered.
“And your shoulder? You said something about it before.” As he asked, he stretched his hand and touched her shoulder, making her scream loudly in pain and she immediately held on to her shoulder.
“Oh my, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you.” He quickly apologized but she still held on to her shoulder as tears began to well up in her eyes but she fought it back.
“I'm so sorry. I think we need to take you to the hospital or something. Where is the way to your pack? I can take you there.” He said, getting up and expecting her to get up too but was surprised that she didn't move an inch.
“Why are you not getting up? I just said we need to get you to the hospital. Don't you want to go?” He asked, confused as to why she wasn't moving despite his offer to take her back to her pack and the hospital to get treatment.
To his amazement, she shook her head, not agreeing to go with him.
He crouched in front of her and asked her, “Why? Is it too far away? Look, if you think it's too far away, I can take you there no matter how far it is, I promise you.”
“I thought you said you didn't trust me.” She said shifting her gaze which had been on the ground all the while, to him.
“Well, I know it might sound really crazy, but I trust you now. So, can we go?” He replied but she still shook her head, leaving him more surprised.
“What?” He sprung up. “You still don't want to go? Are you planning to live in this forest for life? Anything can happen at any moment. You can be attacked by rogue wolves, get exhausted, or even die of dehydration! There are a million and one things that could go wrong and there will be no one who would help you! Are you crazy? What the hell is wrong with you?” He said to her, raising his voice a little.
As he kept speaking, her eyes began to fill with tears once again.
“You know nothing about me!” She cried out, screaming at him. “You don't know anything.” She muttered, and finally allowed the tears she had been trying to hold in, to flow.
She got up and began to walk away but she had only walked a few steps when the pain she had felt in her leg a few days ago came back again and this made her fall to the ground.
Steve quickly ran to her to help her, “Is your leg hurt too? I thought it was just your shoulder.” He said but she yanked her hands off him.
She struggled to get back up on her own but ended up falling back to the ground, screaming in intense pain.
“You're going to hurt yourself. Calm down, let me help you.” He said, trying to help again.
“I don't need your help. Please let go.” She snapped back at him as she got up and began to limp away.
“Calm down. Wait up!” He kept following her and grabbed her arm once again to stop her.
“Please leave me alone. I'm sure you've concluded that I am a bad person. That's what everyone thinks I am and I'm not surprised. So, let me go.” She said and tried to free her arm from his grip again, refusing his help.
“What do you mean by that? Who tagged you a bad person?” He kept asking because he was so confused but she didn't answer him and kept struggling.
“I didn't call you a bad person.” He said in his defense.
“But you implied it! You didn't have to spell it out to me. I understand already. Let go of me!” She yelled at him and limped off again.
“VEE, PLEASE, I'M SORRY.” He shouted as he apologized and just like butter melts in the fire, she became calm instantly and stopped in her tracks, making him catch up with her again.
That was the first man, aside Beck, to call her by that name and so it brought back so many memories of her and Beck.
Steve, on the other hand, didn't understand how he was beginning to feel for someone he had just met, less than two hours ago.
“I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have spoken to you in that manner. I'm so sorry.” He apologized once again and she wiped her tears as he helped her find a place to sit.
“I'm sorry. I don't know what I was thinking. I had no right to speak to you like that. I sincerely apologize.” He pleaded with her but she didn't answer him, she just kept staring at nothing in particular.
“Please talk to me, I'm begging you. Vee? I'm really sorry. I promise you, I was raised better. I've just been in a bit of a weird mood today and that is why I came out hunting.” He said again, crouching in front of her.
“I don't know what to say to you.” She finally spoke to him and he sighed.
“I think you really need to go to the hospital. Look, your ankle is now swollen. I think you must have sprained it. It'll get harder for you to walk now if we don't get you medical assistance as soon as possible.” He said to her and she nodded as she checked for herself and saw that truly, her ankle had swollen.
“I sprained it some days ago, I thought it had healed up since I didn't feel any pain anymore. I didn't know it would become like this.” She explained to him.
Steve applied a little pressure on it and Veronica sucked her teeth, holding her breath because of the pain she felt. It had gotten really bad in just a few minutes.
“You see. We need to get you home. Where is your pack?” He asked and she shook her head and mouthed ‘I don't know’.
“Come on, Veronica, please don't tell me we are back to square one. Let's not do this again, please. You need medical help.” He reminded her.
“Where is your pack, please?” He asked her again. “You need to tell me, so I can help you.” He urged her, staring intently at her.
“I don't have one.” She answered him, not looking him in the eye.
“Come on, how is that possible? I don't know what it is that you're afraid of or why you're avoiding your pack but we need to get you back there. You need to rest and be taken care of.” He said, as he tried to urge her to tell him where her pack was situated so that he could help her.
“I CAN'T.” She said, raising her voice.
“But why?” He asked, getting disappointed at the unnecessary back and forth.
“I’VE BEEN BANISHED!” She cried out.
Chapter 25
Steve's eyes widened in shock at this revelation. Even his ears stood out at the sound of what she said, he couldn't believe his ears.
“You've been what?” He asked after he finally found his voice, but still shocked at what he had just heard.
“You mean you were banished from your pack?” He asked again as if he didn't hear her the first time.
Veronica could only reply by just nodding her head in sadness as she wiped a tear off her right cheek.
“But why? How? Why? What was the reason? What was your offence? What did you do?” He kept asking her, giving almost no room for an answer and so she remained quiet.
He began to pace as he thought about everything she could have possibly been through.
“Wait, I'm trying to understand. So where were you going to? I mean, after leaving your pack, where were you headed?” He stopped pacing and suddenly asked her.
“Nowhere exactly.” She replied, wiping her tears and blowing out her blocked nose.
“Nowhere? So you were just walking around the forest without a destination?” He asked and she shrugged it off.
“What if something bad had happened to you?” He asked her and she scoffed.
“Can it get any worse than this?” She asked him. “Just look at me with a broken ankle and shoulder. How far can I go?” She asked, not expecting an answer.
“Look, I am just hoping I can find somewhere to pitch a tent till I eventually die because I think that will be the perfect solution right now.” She said, making Steve stop to look at her in shock.
“Don't say that! Why would you even think or say such a thing?” He cautioned her. “Something as serious as death for that matter! Come on!” He snapped at her.
“Well, there's nothing much to expect from someone who lives in the forest, is there?” She said with a sour smile.
“I guess it doesn't get any worse than this.” She said again, looking at her present state. “I'll guess I'll leave faster with my present state.” She added, looking straight ahead at nothing in particular.
Steve didn't understand that she meant that she was going to die faster since she was injured, in pain and tired.
“Leave to go where? Where do you plan to go now?” He asked her, anticipating to hear something positive.
“To the afterlife, of course. I hope I'm able to meet the moon goddess because I sure have a lot of questions to ask her. Hopefully she will give me answers and tell me why she decided to craft out my life to be so miserable and make my fate such a cursed one.” She said bitterly.
“Shhhhhh…” Steve held one finger to her mouth, stopping her from saying anything further. “Please just calm down.” He appeased her.
He paused for a while and watched as the beauty before him fought to hold her pain in, wiping her tears at every drop of them. It was obvious she had gone through a whole lot and she was now wishing to end it all.
“In a situation like this, you need to calm down and think positively. Please instead of having negative thoughts, try to be positive.” He tried to advise her.
“Positive?” She let out a hysterical laugh and immediately after, her face switched back to having a very serious look as she stared at him, “There is nothing positive about me! Nothing at all. I'd advise that you leave as soon as possible before my curse rubs off on you. You're not obligated to support me or be there for me. You don't have to.” She warned, coldly and turned away from him.
“Come on, Veronica. It won't make any sense for me to leave you in this kind of state. My conscience would keep pricking me because that is the worst thing that can be done to anyone.”
“What if something happens to you? What if you're attacked and you bleed to death?” He continued. “There are a million and one things that could go wrong.” He added.
“Let that be my fate! I don't think you should bother yourself over that. Just let me be here.” She said, coldly
“Why are you punishing yourself? I just don't get it. Why are you doing all this to yourself?” He asked, trying to understand her.
“You just don't get it, do you?” She snapped at him. “Do you know what I've been through? You have no idea of what I've been through! You have no idea how I almost died! How I lost my only friend! How I have been tagged a problem magnet, the one who attracts problems and disasters wherever I go. No idea how I was accused of being responsible for my best friend: who was my only friend and family, how I was accused of being responsible for her death! You have no idea how I was treated like trash because they felt I wasn't worth it. I mean, I'm just a useless omega!” She cried as she screamed at the top of her voice to the extent that her voice broke as she spoke.
With a broken voice, she said again, “You have no idea of how my mate suddenly rejected me after all the promises he made to me, and worse still, how he stood right there and did nothing even as the decree was made for me to be banished from the pack!” She then paused, not looking at Steve who was shocked at what he just heard.
It felt like her heart was going to explode, like it was being pumped with a kind of machine and so she had to pause for a few seconds before she continued speaking to the now-dumbfounded Steve.
As if all she had been saying were not bad enough, hearing that her mate rejected her was the worst of them all. It seemed like that was the last straw which broke the camel’s back. It was so obvious that she was severely pained and hurt by that alone.
Nothing was as terrible as finding out that someone whom you trusted and wanted to live your life for, didn't want you. Like you didn't matter to them and they didn't care if you were no more. And to make matters worse, she was banished also. Little wonder why she didn't find any reason to live anymore.
“So, don't tell me to be positive. Don't even try to tell me how to think or what to think about! Don't!” She said on a final note and buried her head in her hands as she wept.
Chapter 26
After Veronica’s outburst, she remained quiet while Steve just remained quiet because he felt like whatever he said at that moment could trigger her anger more, so he decided to stay by her side and allow her to cry it all out.
After noticing that she was a bit calm, he decided to speak to her, and so he cleared his throat before he began to talk.
“I'm so sorry for how I reacted and for every word that I said. I'm genuinely sorry. It was because I didn't know better and I jumped into conclusion without fully understanding your situation. I sincerely apologize.” He apologized and waited for her response but instead of saying anything, she only nodded in acceptance and so he started speaking again.
“You know,” he began, “I won't say that I understand exactly how you feel but I will still say what I said earlier: please don't think that you're cursed. Don't even say you are cursed. You're a beautiful young lady with a bright future ahead of you, If you'll only just see it and walk in it and not allow naysayers ruin it all for you.” He spoke so calmly but Veronica shook her head in disagreement. She didn't believe any of his words.
“I don't believe that. I think you're just trying to patronise me but you really don't have to. There's no point doing all of that. I know what I am.” She said to him as soon as he finished speaking.
“And what are you?” He asked her, curiously.
“A cursed omega; useless and worthless.” She replied coldly.
“Don't talk like that, please.” He said, facing her. “I know you said that you've been through a lot and I know I'll never be able to quantify or understand all that you have been through, but please don't give up on yourself. Don't be in a hurry to put yourself down and believe other people's opinions about you just because things didn't work out the way they wanted.”
“So how do you explain the rogue attack on our pack? My best friend's death? How?” She asked him.
“Coincidence, Veronica. It could have just been a mere coincidence.” He answered her and unexpectedly held her hands softly.
“Look, people always try to push the blame onto others, especially the ones they know who won't be able to fight back.” He said again and she soon began to reason with what he was trying to explain to her.
“That’s why you need to learn to be strong and not allow others to trample upon you. Don’t let anyone see you as a weak link.” He adviced, and she sighed after which she took her hands off his grip and they both became silent.
“I’m sorry for yelling at you. It came from a place of hurt and anger. I was angry that you didn't know what exactly was going on, yet you already concluded and misunderstood me.” She explained to him.
“I understand. I shouldn't have concluded so rashly. I'm sorry about that once again.” He apologized.
“It's fine.” She replied with a little smile, and Steve smiled too as he stared at her but this made her a little bit uncomfortable that she had to look away. He also composed himself and looked away as they were both thrown into another round of silence.
“Steve?” She called his name, breaking the silence again. “Thank you so much.”
“What for?” He asked her.
“For being here with me, I guess.” She said shyly and he smiled. “And being positive.” She added.
“I feel like you might be an amazing person.” She said, almost whispering, but Steve heard her loud and clear.
“No way… Did I just hear you correctly? You think I MIGHT be an amazing person? Really?” He asked jokingly and she nodded, smiling.
“Come on, stop being dramatic.” She said, smiling cutely.
“Oh my, I'm so hurt. My head is aching. My heart is in pain. Oh no. Oh my.” He said in a funny way and she started laughing at the way he was acting up.
She laughed so hard that she began to cough and she fell off the tree they had been sitting on. She immediately screamed out in pain.
“Oh no! Are you okay?” He immediately rushed to her.
“I can't believe you laughed and fell off. Was I that funny?” He asked her jokingly and she nodded, trying not to speak.
“Are you okay?” He asked again and she shook her head.
“I think I might pass out.” She said as he
Hearing this, his eyes widened, “I think we need to take you to the hospital.” He said.
“I don't think I can go anywhere. I have nowhere to go to.” She replied, still in severe pain.
Steve looked around and at that moment, noticed it was already getting dark. He tried to check his wristwatch for the time but realized he had left it at home.
“I can't believe we've been talking and I lost track of time.” He said and she noticed too.
“We need to go now.” He told her and she frowned.
“Go where? I told you I had no place to go.” She reminded him.
“I know. I'll take you to my pack.” He said to her and she froze.
“I don't think you can do that. Do packs just allow strangers these days?” She managed to ask him. “Because if I remember correctly, strangers weren't allowed when I was a member of my previous pack.” She explained and he bit his lips as he remembered that that was the same rule in his pack too.
“But I can't leave you here. It's too dangerous and you can't even go anywhere on your own in this state.” He stated.
“Don't worry about me. You can leave. Maybe the moon goddess will find a way to keep me alive in this forest.” She said to him but he disagreed.
An idea suddenly popped in his heart.
“I think I have the perfect plan.” He announced it to her.
“Which is?” She asked, weakly.
“By the time we're out of the forest, it will be totally dark. I'll sneak you into my pack and keep you in my house until I'm able to speak to someone to accept you into our pack.” He explained to her.
“Is that possible?” She asked him.
“Of course.” He answered, not completely sure if it was going to be possible.
“Are you sure?” She asked him and he furrowed his forehead.
“I think it is.” He answered and as she was about to protest, he said again, “Don't worry, we'll find a way around this. It will work out. Be positive, remember.” He assured her.
Deep down he wasn't sure if it was going to be possible because he knew the rules that guided the pack, ‘anyone, no matter who it was, who brought in a stranger into the pack without the permission of the Alpha or someone of authority, would be punished and the stranger would be sent away or locked up immediately’, so he knew that he was making a very dangerous decision, but he was willing to try his best to ensure that Veronica got the help she needed and was not stuck and left for dead in the forest.
“Come let's go.” He stretched his hand to her and as she grabbed him, he carried her, shocking her, and began to walk away.
“What… What are you doing?” She asked him, surprised that he carried her.
“Carrying you. Isn't it obvious?” He replied, rolling his eyes at her.
“But I can walk.” She protested.
“I doubt you can. In fact, with how hard it is for you to walk right now, and how weak you are at the moment, if you are left to walk in this state, we won't be able to leave this forest even in three days. I'm sure you know that.” He stated and she immediately kept calm as she began to hold in her pain.
***FIRE DAWN PACK***
~AT THE HOSPITAL ~
Beta Richard and Lily remained by their son’s side throughout the day and watched as he was still on the bed, not moving. Aside from the beeping sounds of the monitors attached to his body, the room was as silent as a graveyard.
They had earlier raised their concerns to the doctor about the fact that he had been in that state since they got to the hospital, yet he wasn't awake yet, but the doctor had assured them that he was perfectly fine and they only need to be patient and wait for him to wake up on his own.
“It's almost nightfall, do you think we should alert the doctors of his condition again? I'm getting scared, because why is he not waking up?” Beta Lily whispered to her husband.
“I think we should just be patient just as the doctor advised. He is fine and will wake up soon, I'm sure.” He assured her, placing his hand on her shoulder.
“OH NO!! VEE!!!!” Scott suddenly screamed Veronica's name from his sleep.
Chapter 27
“Son, baby. Are you okay?” Beta Lily quickly asked him.
She began to rub her hand gently on his body to gradually wake him from his slumber but his eyes were still totally shut as he kept struggling in his sleep and muttering Veronica's name.
His parents, Beta Lily, most especially, soon began to panic because the more she tried to wake him up, the more he just kept struggling and soon began to cry.
“Richard, call the doctor immediately!” She yelled and he immediately stormed out to call the doctor.
Shortly after, he rushed in with a nurse and the doctor, who quickly instructed Scott's parents to step away from Scott as he started to examine the boy.
He checked his vitals and with a straight face, looked up to Scott's parents.
“What is it, Doctor? Why do you look so serious? Is something terribly wrong with our son?” Beta Lily asked the doctor.
“Of course not. He is perfectly fine.” He replied.
“What do you mean by that? He is obviously not looking fine to me. Can't you see how he is struggling and muttering a name in his sleep?” She asked, unsatisfied with the doctor's response. “He suddenly screamed the same name before we called you in too.” She added.
“Hmmm.” He mused.
He looked away from Scott's parents and focused on Scott, paying attention to the way he was acting.
He looked at the nurse and pointed to a vial of medication which was in the tray she was holding and she handed the vial to him. As soon as he collected it from her, he drew out the contents in it into a syringe and wiped Scott’s arm with a clean wool, after which he injected his arm. Immediately, Scott stopped muttering and he became quiet.
“Is he going to be fine, doctor? What is going on? Please talk to us.”Beta Lily asked impatiently as the doctor walked towards them in the corner where they had been waiting.
“Yes, he is going to be fine. He should be up any moment from now.” He assured her with a slight smile.
“Are you sure? I hope you're not just saying all of this to make us feel better.” Beta Richard said to him.
“Exactly! we don't want to be deceived or played like fools.” His wife said in agreement. “We really want to know what is going on with our son. Why is it that he-”
At that moment, Scott sneezed very hard, interrupting their conversation, and they immediately looked at him. He sneezed a second time and this time around, his eyes opened.
He looked around and saw the doctor and nurse across from him and wondered where he was. The doctor and nurse were standing directly in front of his parents, so he didn't see them.
“Where am I?” He thought to himself as he looked around one more time.
The doctor slightly moved aside, giving room for his parents' faces to be revealed and so, Scott finally noticed his mum and dad looking worried at the corner.
“Mom? Dad?” He called out to them, to their surprise.
Seeing her son finally open his eyes and finally saying something meaningful, like calling their names, Beta Lily screamed in excitement and rushed to hug him right before the doctor could stop them.
Confused, Scott asked, “What happened? This is the hospital, right? What am I doing here?”
“Well, you were brought in here after the warriors found you in the forest unconscious.” The doctor explained to him with a smile, as he checked his drip line.
“Unconscious, forest…” he muttered to himself as if trying to remember something.
Suddenly, he gasped and his eyes widened as he finally remembered.
“Vee! Is she here? Did you find her? Did she escape? Was she brought here too?” He asked hurriedly.
Hearing this, they all looked at each other in confusion, wondering who ‘Vee’ was and why he was desperately asking about her.
“Vee? We don't know what you're talking about, son. You were the only one found by the warriors and you were brought here. I don't think they saw any other person or thing. So, no ‘Vee’ was brought here.” His father answered him.
As soon as he heard what his father just said, he began to panic, and tried to hurriedly get up from the bed to leave but he was immediately stopped by his parents and the doctor.
“Where do you think you're going at this time of the night, young man?” His father immediately asked him.
“To find her. To find Vee! I promised her!” He exclaimed and his parents and the doctor exchanged glances.
“That was the exact name he was calling for in his sleep. You assured us that he was fine, Doctor. What is the meaning of all this? What exactly is going on?” His mother asked, slightly distressed and disappointed.
The Doctor sighed and stood beside Scott who was now sitting up on the bed. He then asked him calmly, “Who is Vee?”
“She is my friend.” He answered.
“Your friend? What are you talking about, Scott? The name doesn't even sound familiar.” Beta Richard said, getting a little bit frustrated and stressed
“Richard!” His wife snapped at him and he kept quiet.
“Please Beta Richard, be patient. I believe we'll get the answers we need if we are just patient enough to hear him out.” The doctor said to him.
“So, this friend of yours. Where did you meet her and what promise did you make to her?” The doctor asked him.
“We met in the forest.” He began. “She has been taking care of me all the while I was lost in the forest. She saved my life and is in danger because of me.”
Before he could continue, his mother interrupted, “Wait, she saved your life?” She asked.
“Yes, mum. I almost died.” He replied and both his parents’ mouths opened in shock.
“What!?” They both exclaimed in unison.
“How did that happen?” She asked with a shaky voice.
“I fell into a deep pit and passed out. She helped me out when I regained consciousness but she fell back in when she was trying to get out because the rope snapped and I promised to get someone to help her but I couldn't keep my promise.” He explained sadly and they all sighed.
“That's why I'm going to find her before something bad happens to her there.” He added.
“You are?” His father asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes, I definitely will.” He said confidently and they all chuckled.
“And how do you plan to do that?” He asked him. “You don't even have any weapons.” His father joked and as he thought about the reality, he became disappointed.
“Come to think of it, what if someone has found her and helped her?” His father asked him but he shook his head.
“That's not possible.” Scott stated, confidently.
Surprised by Scott's response, his dad asked, “What makes you think so?”
“The area is so deep in the forest. No one ever goes there to hunt because that's the scariest and most dangerous part of the forest.” He answered.
“Dad, please can you find her for me? I don't want her to get hurt because of me. Please.” He pleaded with his dad, his eyes laced with tears.
“We'll find her, don't worry.” His dad said.
“Really? Can we go right now?” He asked, in anticipation.
“What? No, not now. It's too dangerous.” His father replied but this didn't make Scott happy at all.
“Why not? The earlier, the better, isn't it?” He complained.
“Well, the warriors would have to strategize properly first and they can't do it tonight. Besides, I have to ask the Alpha for his permission before I can do anything.” He explained it to his son.
“Oh, that's true.” He said sadly.
“Come here.” His mum said, pulling him into a hug. “I'm sorry you had to go through all of that, but don't worry, your dad will try his best to find your friend and bring her here.” She assured him and gave him a kiss on the forehead.
Chapter 28
That very night, Steve sneaked Veronica into the pack without being caught, but there was a problem on their way to the pack- Veronica got too tired and because she had been in so much pain for a long time, she became unconscious just miles before they arrived at Fire Dawn Pack.
Afraid and confused, he was torn between two options: whether to keep going with her or to abandon her somewhere.
Abandoning her was dangerous but taking her like that to the pack was equally dangerous. He had to stop for a moment to think his decision through. He laid her on the bare ground and began to do some fast but deep thinking.
If he was caught with an unconscious stranger in his arms, he'd risk being thrown into jail but if he leaves her there, she might be attacked and killed.
“Damn!” He lamented, kicking the dust.
After a long moment of pacing and thinking hard about it, he placed his hand on the side of her neck and her wrist and felt what seemed like a pulse.
“She's still alive.” He gasped and finally decided to take her to the pack regardless of what could go wrong after.
He carried her in his arms once again and began to walk hurriedly to the pack to be able to at least get her help.
Being a member of the pack, he knew every shortcut and path that led to the back of the pack where his house was situated. Since it had already gotten so dark, it was easy for him to evade the guards and he got to his house without anyone noticing him, let alone notice he had a guest, a stranger.
He opened the door and shut it back as he got in. He walked to his bedroom immediately and laid Veronica gently on the bed, supporting her head with a soft pillow. Quickly, he pulled all the curtains and locked the windows firmly.
He then swiftly ran back to the door. He opened it slightly, silently and carefully and peeped out with one eye. He did this to double check, and confirm that he had not been followed.
As soon as he was sure that he wasn't followed or seen by neither the guard, nor any member of the pack, he quickly shut the door but in an attempt to quickly shut the door, he mistakenly let it go before it closed completely, which made it make a loud banging sound as it shut.
“Damn!” He cussed.
He quickly rushed and peeped through the window to see if anyone was alerted by the loud sound, but seeing no one, he heaved a sigh of relief.
He rushed back into the room and there, Veronica was still on the bed. He turned on his bedside lamp and moved close to her. He touched her forehead but immediately drew back.
“She's burning hot.” He exclaimed quietly.
He rushed into his bathroom and got a bowl of cold water and a clean towel. He dipped the towel into the water, squeezed it and placed it on her forehead. He then kept monitoring her temperature which kept fluctuating.
Although he wasn't a doctor, he had first hand knowledge of first aid and basic treatments.
He got another towel with warm water and used it to wipe her hand and face and other parts of her body which were visibly dirty due to her ordeal in the forest.
He got a first aid box and after disinfecting the wounds, he then began to apply ointments and band-aids to the wounds.
He checked her forehead again and noticed she was no longer burning as hot as she was before. He then replaced the towel with another wet one and placed his head on the bed as he waited to change the towel again but ended up sleeping off.
He only woke up after he heard noises of the pack members going about their daily activities, as it was their routine to leave their houses early every morning. It was at that moment that he realized that he had slept off while waiting to change the towel.
“I can't believe I slept off last night.” He said to himself, yawning.
He quickly checked Veronica's temperature and saw that she was already stable but she wasn't waking up, neither was she showing any signs that she would wake up soon.
“I hope I have not pushed myself into something much more than I can handle.” He thought to himself as he tried to hold her hand, hoping that she would react to his touch.
Unfortunately, she didn't react and this got him seriously worried. He moved close to her nostrils and noticed she was breathing, although weakly, but she was.
“Now what do I do?” He asked himself, biting down on his lower lip.
Right at that moment, there was a loud knock on the door and he held his breath, in shock.
“Who could be here this early?” He whispered to himself.
He didn't respond and kept quiet, hoping that whoever it was would leave if they didn't hear anything.
He stood on a spot, without moving, for fear of being heard but the knock came again, this time, louder than the first.
“I know you're in there. Steve!!!” Megan yelled his name, giving him a clue of who was at the door.
“What is she doing here at this time?” He asked himself.
“I know you're there, Steve. Just open the damn door.” She yelled again.
“How does she know I'm in here, with the windows and door completely locked? This girl!” He hissed.
“I’ll not leave here and I won't stop yelling until you open this door.” She shouted from outside as she kept banging on the door.
Steve was left with no choice but to open the door. He closed the room door and went to the front door.
“What the hell is wrong with you? Isn't it too early for you to be here? Huh?” He asked as he opened the door.
“I knew you were in. You can fool others but you can't fool me.” She said with a frown.
“You've not answered my question. Why are you here this early?” He asked her but she shoved him out of the way and walked in, but Steve quickly ran towards his room door and stood in front of it.
“Do I need your permission before I come here? It's not like this is my first time here anyway.” She replied, rolling her eyes at him. “Besides, I haven't seen you since you went hunting yesterday. I needed to confirm that you were alright.” She added, blowing into her nails.
She then tried to go into his room but he refused to move out of the way.
“What is it? Why are you acting strange?” She asked him.
“Nothing. Am I acting strange?” He asked her, acting innocent.
“Of course! You're acting strange and you know it.” She said, staring at him.
She then suddenly gasped, “Did you bring a girl home last night?” She shouted at him.
“What? No!” He replied, defending himself.
“Then get out of my way, I want to go into your room.” She yelled at him but he refused.
She suddenly began to cough violently, scaring Steve who immediately let down his guard to help her but she used that opportunity to smartly rush into the room before he could stop her.
Seeing Veronica on the bed, she screamed.
