Chapter 34
An important interview
Sigourney's eyes lit up.
"Is that possible?"
She only knew that the Wang Corporation specialized in real estate, building luxury apartments and resort complexes. She had never heard of them constructing schools.
"It's possible. We haven't promoted this as a core business, but we do have a capable team with experience in that area," Theodore offered.
"Besides, the Wang Corporation is currently looking to expand its charitable projects to demonstrate its commitment to the community."
"I'll need to discuss it with the senior leadership team first-I can't make any promises yet," Theodore emphasized.
"But Wang Corporation won't just handle the planning and construction,"
He stressed the point,
"We're also willing to contribute financially and offer your corporation the most preferential pricing for the collaboration."
The more Sigourney listened, the brighter her mood became. She put down her laptop and wrapped her arms around Theodore with a sense of satisfaction.
"Thank you. I'll be waiting for good news from you."
...
The next morning,
Sigourney spent her morning at the corporation, wrapping up some urgent business.
In the afternoon,
Venus drove her to the national television station for an important interview.
It was a live broadcast on the financial news program, where the guests were all CEOs or directors from major domestic corporations.
Therefore, Sigourney being invited to participate was considered a great honor.
She wore a crisp white silk blouse paired with a long mermaid-cut skirt in light blue-elegant, yet gently feminine.
Her hair was carefully curled, falling softly over her shoulders, and her face was exquisitely made up. Even Venus couldn't help but praise her.
"Boss, you look especially beautiful today."
Sigourney smiled faintly as she walked in with Venus.
The television station staff were highly professional. Upon her arrival, Sigourney was warmly welcomed and escorted to the guest lounge to rest before the interview.
She had arrived nearly half an hour early.
"Miss Nichols, please wait a moment. The other guest for the news segment is also on the way,"
"If you'd like, you may chat with him when he arrives,"
one of the staff members said gracefully as she served tea and pastries to Sigourney.
Sigourney nodded in thanks, not particularly concerned with finding out who the other guest was.
But as fate would have it,
the less one suspects, the greater the surprise.
When Richard walked into the lounge, Sigourney instinctively frowned.
"So the beautiful and talented female director they mentioned is actually you, Sigourney?"
"What a surprise."
Richard exclaimed the moment he entered with his secretary.
This was a financial news segment, typically featuring two guests. Since neither had asked too many questions beforehand, they had simply respected each other's privacy.
Now, it was clear that both were caught off guard.
After the incident the other day, naturally,
Sigourney's demeanor toward Richard had grown noticeably colder.
She responded with a faint smile in place of words, then said nothing further.
"Hey, you're gorgeous, but must you be so cold?"
"Is this how you treat your savior?"
Richard chuckled teasingly, probing with his words.
As if testing a suspicion, Sigourney smiled cryptically.
"Savior? That might not even be true."
Richard's eyes darkened briefly. Clearly,
with the intelligence of both Sigourney and Theodore, they had already figured it out.
The recent troubles plaguing his corporation made perfect sense now - Theodore's counterattack.
As they continued their exchange, time had quietly crept up on them. A staff member stepped in and politely invited them to head to the studio - the live broadcast was about to begin.
No sooner had they taken their seats than the female host began the introduction gracefully.
"Good evening, dear viewers, and welcome to the Financial News. I'm Sakura..."
Her voice was gentle and measured, instantly softening the atmosphere.
Then, she gestured toward Sigourney and Richard.
"Today, I'm honored to introduce two special guests-both highly accomplished and well-known figures in the business world."
The host let out a soft chuckle.
"First, ladies first-please welcome Mrs Sigourney Nichols, Director of the Nichols Corporation."
Sigourney offered a poised nod and greeted the audience with the practiced line she had long memorized. After finishing her introduction with elegant composure, she briefly pressed her lips together, as if checking something off her mental list.
The host promptly turned to Richard.
"And next to me is the dashing gentleman-Mr. Richard Lancaster, CEO of Lancaster Industries."
Richard returned the greeting just as courteously, his tone warm and polished.
Perhaps thanks to the host's professionalism and well-paced guidance, Sigourney found herself at ease while answering questions related to finance and investment.
Not to mention, the questions were considered fair and balanced between the two guests.
"Mrs Nichols, Mr. Lancaster," the host continued sweetly, "as senior executives of such renowned corporations, do you have any advice for business leaders today?"
"In this time of economic hardship, quite a few small and medium-sized enterprises have declared bankruptcy. I believe many business owners and executives would truly benefit from your insights."
Since the questions had been shared in advance, both Sigourney and Richard responded with clarity and ease.
The interview was nearing its end-and by all accounts, it had gone smoothly.
In the relaxed atmosphere, the host let out a light chuckle as she guided the conversation.
"Well then, thank you both-Mrs Nichols and Mr. Lancaster-for your sincere and insightful sharing."
"You've spoken quite passionately about finance. Would it be alright to share a little about your love lives as well?"
Though this was a finance program, it wasn't overly formal. The tone remained easygoing and light-hearted to better attract viewers.
So the host's question wasn't particularly unusual.
Both Sigourney and Richard agreed without hesitation.
The host turned to Sigourney first.
"Mrs Nichols, may I ask about the relationship status of a beautiful and accomplished woman like yourself?"
She smiled gracefully, carefully watching Sigourney's expression, and only continued when she saw the guest was at ease.
Sigourney smiled gently, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
"This is probably something many people already know. I've been married for over a year now, and my marriage with my husband could be considered happy and harmonious."
As she spoke, Sigourney gave a soft smile like a woman in love, her face radiating happiness.
The host offered her warm congratulations.
"Then allow me to truly wish you continued success, Mrs Nichols, both in your career and your relationship. May everything go smoothly for you."
At that moment, the host turned to Richard, repeating the same question she had just asked Sigourney.
"And what about you, Mr. Lancaster? A charming and successful man like yourself must have quite a few admirers, I imagine?"
Richard gave Sigourney a look full of meaning before replying at ease.
"Oh, no. I’m not as fortunate as Mrs. Nichols, who has a fulfilling love. At the moment, I’m still in unrequited love."
His words made the host’s eyes light up immediately, this might just be the highlight of today’s broadcast.
So, she quickly followed up.
"Now I’m really curious, who is the lucky girl who’s captured Mr. Lancaster’s heart?"
Richard pretended not to notice the cautious and somewhat threatening look from Sigourney. On the contrary, he deliberately turned to her with eyes full of affection, his voice dropping to a gentle murmur.
He let out a bitter smile.
"‘Lucky,’ you say? If she doesn’t find me as a bother, I’d already be thankful enough."
What Richard shared was deeply personal, yet he spoke with such ease that the host couldn’t help but ask further.
"Would you be willing to share what kind of girl she is? I think not only I but also many of our viewers are quite curious to know what kind of woman someone as accomplished as you might fall for."
Sigourney instinctively raised a hand to her forehead, feeling an unsettling sense of dread as Richard prepared to answer.
And indeed,
her worries were justified.
Because Richard, as if unintentionally, glanced in her direction, then gave a smile that was both resigned and full of emotion.
"Her? She’s a beautiful woman, gentle, yet full of determination."
He didn’t hesitate to echo the exact words the host had earlier used to compliment Sigourney throughout the broadcast. Then he added,
"In business, she’s clever and meticulous. In life, independent and full of personality. She’s like a rose with thorns—captivating, yet too daunting to approach too closely."
Chapter 35
At that moment, of course, the host had already picked up on the underlying meaning in Richard's every word.
However, being on a live broadcast, she couldn't afford to expose the implication outright or press too deeply into it. She merely offered a polite and cautious wish: that Richard would soon win the heart of the woman he loved and find happiness in love.
"Thank you for your kind wishes,"
"I truly hope so as well,"
Richard replied with a faint smile.
Once the interview ended and they returned to the waiting room, Sigourney could no longer hold herself back. She coldly confronted Richard.
"What foolish thing did you just say? Don't think I didn't understand your implication."
Sigourney's voice was icy, her tone sharp with anger. She knew Richard not only intended to openly pursue her, but also to provoke Theodore.
But for what? It was childish.
Richard looked at Sigourney, his gaze from beginning to end filled with gentle indulgence.
"I've told you many times, Sigourney. I don't care that you're married, and I don't care how many times you've rejected me."
"Because I truly am drawn to you."
Richard spoke sincerely, but Sigourney had no interest in listening. She shot him a glare, then turned and walked out of the broadcasting station with Venus.
...
Elsewhere,
at Wang Corporation,
Theodore's brows were tightly furrowed, clearly displaying his displeasure.
Sigourney had excitedly informed him earlier that she would be featured in a finance broadcast, and he had tuned in with the intention of supporting her, feeling pleased.
But to his surprise, the second guest turned out to be Richard-and worse still, he openly flirted with his wife on live television.
Theodore's hand clenched into a fist, unable to suppress the storm of fury rising within him. Even Sutton Mark, who stood beside him, shivered slightly, as if he could feel the raging flames of Theodore's wrath.
"Sutton Mark..."
Theodore suddenly called him by his full name, startling Mark. He immediately bowed his head in response.
"Yes, boss?"
Theodore gritted his teeth as he spoke each word.
"Isn't Richard's company currently bidding and negotiating a few new projects? Find a way to disrupt them for me."
"I want to see, once his stock prices take a sharp hit, whether that fool Richard still has the time to flirt with my wife."
Theodore's voice dripped with danger, and naturally, Sutton Mark had no choice but to accept the order.
That evening,
when Theodore returned home from work,
Sigourney had already arrived earlier. At the moment, she was busy in the kitchen with Aunt Miller. No one knew what the two were chatting about, but Sigourney would occasionally burst into lighthearted laughter.
When she saw Theodore's figure appear behind the doorway, her eyes curved into a gentle smile.
"Theodore, you're home from work already?"
She wiped her hands and slowly walked over to his side.
"Do you want some tiramisu? I'm making a few desserts with Aunt Miller."
Perhaps because the memory of that afternoon was still fresh, Theodore's eyes were cold, and his attitude was clearly off.
"You and Miller go ahead and eat. I don't want any."
With that, Theodore turned around.
"I'm heading upstairs to change and rest. Don't mind me."
His tone clearly revealed a trace of sulkiness that made Sigourney laugh. She quickly tugged at his arm to soothe him.
"Hey, did you watch that finance broadcast?"
The moment Sigourney brought it up, Theodore's brows furrowed and his voice grew even colder.
"Which broadcast? The one where Richard openly flirted with you this afternoon?"
Perhaps Theodore himself didn't realize just how thick the jealousy was in his voice right now.
Hearing that, Sigourney became even more certain of her suspicion. She curled her lips into a sly smile and stepped closer to Theodore, leaning her face near his.
"Hey, don't be mad."
She raised both hands in a playful gesture of surrender.
"First of all, I honestly didn't know Richard would be the other guest. If I had known, I wouldn't have agreed to the interview at all."
Sigourney stated firmly, then continued,
"And besides, when I was asked about my relationship status, I clearly said I was married-and happily so."
She felt genuinely wronged.
"You can't take out your anger on me just because of Richard's stupid remarks. That's not fair."
Sigourney pouted and spoke slowly. Seeing her looking so adorably upset, Theodore's irritation finally began to subside. He let out a soft chuckle, reached out to pat her head, and leaned closer.
Speaking in a low voice meant only for the two of them, he said,
"So it's my fault. I didn't handle it well. Let me make it up to you tonight, alright?"
The word make it up was deliberately emphasized, and it instantly reminded Sigourney of the passionate night they had not long ago. Her face flushed bright red as she gave Theodore a light punch on the chest.
"You're so naughty."
Then, cheeks burning, she spun around and hurried inside.
Theodore shook his head and laughed, his eyes full of tenderness.
hat night, of course,
Theodore kept his word.
As soon as Sigourney finished her shower and came out,
he immediately pulled Sigourney into his arms, gently kissing her ear.
Theodore's low breath against her ear quickly made Sigourney's ears flush red.
"Didn't I promise to serve you tonight? Don't worry, I will definitely make you satisfied."
Theodore gently sucked on Sigourney's earlobe, making her legs so weak she could barely stand, then effortlessly lifted Sigourney up, step by steady step heading toward the bed.
Theodore's series of hurried actions made Sigourney freeze-she instinctively clung to his neck, which only made his breathing grow heavier.
"Theodore, wait a minute."
Sigourney said weakly, her soft voice sounding even sweeter.
Theodore couldn't wait any longer.
As soon as he laid her on the bed, he leaned down and kissed her urgently.
That kiss was more possessive and passionate than ever, as if Theodore was venting all his anger
after watching today's financial news.
Sigourney instinctively accepted the kiss and responded, but Theodore's urgency left her unable to keep up. She let out a soft moan, occasionally hitting his shoulder in an attempt to make him calm down, but both of her hands were already pinned above her head by Theodore.
Their nightwear was gradually stripped away, carelessly tossed onto the cold floor.
Theodore feverishly kissed along Sigourney's soft and alluring body, each kiss charged with desire. Sigourney arched her back, overwhelmed by his fervent kisses, her body going numb, her mind drifting.
All she could do was moan faintly, lost in the heat of his kisses.
"Do you like it, Sigourney?"
When Theodore slowly licked the sensitive spot between her legs, Sigourney instinctively recoiled at the sudden surge of sensation. She hurriedly sat up, trying to pull away.
"Don't do that...Theodore."
Sigourney's usual voice was already soft and sweet, but now it carried a hint of shyness, even a touch of coyness. Theodore’s Adam’s apple bobbed from the surge of emotion and arousal, and he quickly pinned Sigourney’s hand down,
then soothed her with a deep kiss.
“It’s alright, relax a little, Sigourney.”
“I’ll make you feel good.”
Theodore’s husky voice, typically so reassuring, now stirred a sense of dazed bewilderment in Sigourney.
Where on earth had he learned something like this?
But before Sigourney could linger too long in surprise and curiosity, Theodore lowered his head again, gently licking the sensitive spot between her legs.
Sigourney arched her back in response to the stimulation, unable to hold back a loud moan. She hurriedly covered her mouth—the sound that had just escaped her lips was far too wanton, far too inviting.
However, Theodore lifted his head and gave a low chuckle, encouraging her.
“Don’t hold back. Moan freely for me, Sigourney, will you?”
“I really like hearing it.”
Theodore continued to lick deeper inside, making Sigourney feel more and more overwhelmed with pleasure. She moaned unconsciously with every movement of his.
And then, slowly, she climaxed under Theodore’s skillful touch.
Pleased by her reaction, Theodore slid his fingers deep into her body as he kissed her lips.
“This is your taste. Try it,”
Theodore murmured, licking his lips as he whispered in her ear.
“Is it delicious?”
His husky laugh melted into that magnetic voice, making Sigourney’s face flush as red as a ripe gac fruit.
Tonight was overwhelmingly intense.
Chapter 36
Madam, Mr. Lucas Baines has arrived
Over the weekend,
With some spare time on their hands, Sigourney and Theodore returned to the Nichols estate to visit her mom.
When they arrived, they immediately saw Emma attentively watering flowers in the garden.
"Mom, I'm here,"
Sigourney called out gently. At that moment, Emma turned her head slightly, smiling brightly.
"You're back? Theodore came too?"
Theodore's eyes lit up.
"Come on in, both of you. I'll have Butler John prepare some tea and sweet pastries for you."
Emma elegantly wiped her hands with a towel, carried the watering can along, and walked into the house with them. After handing the can to a nearby maid, she headed to the kitchen to wash her hands while Sigourney and Theodore sat in the living room.
When Emma returned, she gently took Sigourney's hand, asking with warmth and familiarity:
"How's life been for you two lately? Everything going well?"
She even glanced subtly toward Theodore.
"Married life seems more harmonious now, doesn't it? No more talk of divorce, right?"
At the mention of the past, Sigourney's face turned visibly embarrassed.
That was in her past life, okay?
Sigourney's smile stiffened a little, and she replied with a sheepish laugh,
"That's all in the past, Mom, don't tease me anymore."
"Now I just want to live peacefully by Theodore's side."
Sigourney leaned slightly against Theodore as she spoke shyly. Then, the two of them updated Emma on their current situation.
Once they finished, Sigourney brought up Savannah.
"Mom, has Savannah been stirring up trouble lately? She hasn't caused you any problems, has she?"
Savannah's ambitions were vast, and she wouldn't easily relinquish her claim to the inheritance within the Nichols family. Having plotted against her several times already, Sigourney was certain Savannah wouldn't leave the people around her alone either.
At the mention of Savannah, Emma's eyes clearly reflected scorn and disgust.
"What's the point of bringing her up? Ever since she was stripped of her rights, she's been trying to cozy up to Mark to regain her privileges. Lately, she's been acting all meek-probably doesn't even dare to breathe too loudly."
Emma let out a cold, derisive laugh.
"But behind the scenes, she's been up to all sorts of vile tricks. Mark was once swayed by her and came to me, asking for help to reinstate Savannah into the Nichols family."
Just thinking about it made Emma narrow her eyes, her voice icy with anger.
"But I turned him down bluntly. Maybe out of spite, Savannah pretended to visit me, then gave me a box of ginseng, claiming it was highly nutritious."
"But in reality, it was no different from poison. If I had finished that box, I might've ended up mentally unstable. Fortunately, Butler John discovered it in time. Besides, I never had any intention of using something given by Savannah."
Emma had strong instincts for self-protection, but when it came to Savannah's tricks, she felt nothing but utter contempt.
Even Sigourney felt a chill run down her spine.
But that wasn't the end of it.
"She still hasn't given up. Jennifer's also pulling strings to help her daughter. Probably because I still hold control over the Nichols family, she and her dear daughter can't live comfortably. So now she's having people tail me, trying to find my weaknesses to use as leverage for threats."
Emma wasn't unfamiliar with such tactics - She had long since become accustomed to them, so she recounted it all in a calm, even tone.
Sigourney sighed.
"Mom, you really have to be extra careful. If there's anything you need, just let me know."
Emma nodded gently, not wanting to dwell on the matter any further.
The three of them sat down to lunch together.
By the afternoon, in order to let Emma rest, Sigourney and Theodore left the Nichols estate, not forgetting to remind Emma to take care of her health and stay vigilant against Savannah and Jennifer before they departed.
But what neither of them expected was that,
about an hour after they left the Nichols estate,
another guest arrived.
Butler John respectfully invited him into the garden where Emma was having tea and carefully announced,
"Madam, Mr. Lucas Baines has arrived."
Emma set down her teacup, and only when she saw John subtly nod-signaling that Jennifer's people were unaware of this visit, did she feel at ease. She nodded in return and greeted Lucas gently.
"You've arrived, have you? Sit down and have some tea."
Emma's attitude toward Lucas was especially gentle, almost coaxing. Lucas merely cast her a cold glance, nodded, and took a seat.
From start to finish, his demeanor was visibly displeased.
"Is something the matter? What's upsetting you?"
Emma asked softly, with concern.
"Is there anything I can help you with? Just tell me, and I'll help you find a way through it, alright?"
Her tone was unusually patient, but Lucas only gave a derisive snort.
"What could you possibly help with?"
"Your precious son-in-law has snatched away another key project from my corporation."
"What could you possibly do to help?"
Lucas sneered, lazily taking a sip of tea as he spoke.
Emma's eyes briefly flashed with surprise before she quickly leaned forward and asked anxiously,
"What exactly happened? Can you explain it more clearly?"
"Maybe I could actually help with something."
Emma continued to coax Lucas gently, as though she were soothing a child.
At that, Lucas finally let out a cold snort, as if reluctantly agreeing to share.
"My corporation and the Wang Corporation both bid on an important project in the western part of the city, developing a luxury residential area."
"However, Wang Corporation won the bid thanks to their close relationship with the project's main investor, so the proposal from my company was rejected."
The bitter, overly strong tea in his mouth made Lucas grimace, and he set the teacup down with clear distaste. Obviously, tea didn't appeal to him.
At that moment, John attentively poured him a cup of coffee from the glass carafe beside them. Only then did Lucas take another sip, finally appearing somewhat content.
Emma let out a soft "Oh," full of regret as she heard this.
"What a pity. I happen to know a few CEOs from some fairly well-known real estate corporations."
"Would you like me to introduce you? Maybe you could see if they're open to negotiating a project with you?"
Emma offered to connect Lucas with her network. She even added,
"When it comes to developing luxury residential areas, the northern part of the city also holds great potential. Princeton Group is planning to build a high-end residential area integrated with a resort-style ecosystem. I could help you get in touch with their CEO, if you'd like?"
"Do you think that might work?"
Emma kept proposing options one after another. At last, a hint of satisfaction flickered in Lucas's eyes.
"That sounds acceptable."
He didn't hesitate to accept the resources Emma offered, and his tone finally began to soften.
Emma then asked a few more questions about how he had been recently, and Lucas answered them all with surprising patience. Eventually, Emma carefully brought up another topic.
"So... how's your father, Ray, been lately? Is his health still holding up?"
Ray Baines was already advanced in age, and having lost interest in the hustle of the business world, had handed the corporation over to Lucas a few years back.
Since his early retirement, he had virtually disappeared from the public eye. Emma, from time to time, had tried to check the news just to see how he was doing, but there had been nothing.
The only way to get any information now was through Lucas.
Lucas didn’t seem surprised by the question. He merely shrugged and replied,
“He’s still healthy. Why wouldn’t he be? Lately, he’s had a lot of free time, so he’s taken a liking to traveling around the world.”
“Right now, I’ve no idea which country he’s relaxing in.”
Since retiring, Ray had been constantly on the move, as if making up for all the years he’d spent buried in work.
So in the end, the only one left busy was Lucas.
“But he does seem more relaxed, at ease, and much happier than before.”
Hearing that, Emma seemed slightly more at ease. She hesitantly asked,
“And how… is his relationship with his wife?”
Lucas looked directly into Emma’s eyes — curious, worried, and quietly unsettled — and answered bluntly,
“Them? Well, it was a business marriage. A few years ago, things weren’t all that smooth between them. But now, it’s... fine, I suppose.”
“They’re traveling together at the moment, actually. Seems pretty close. Who knows? Maybe in a few years, real feelings might develop, and they’ll end up living together like a proper married couple.”
Emma’s smile froze at those words.
She feigned happiness on Ray’s behalf, but the stiffness in her expression and the sadness in her eyes gave her away.
Lucas saw it all — clearly — but chose not to comment,
nor did he have any interest in exposing it.
Chapter 37
I want you to help me get revenge on Theodore
Emma's gaze dimmed, and she merely forced a smile, saying nothing.
It was only then that Lucas slowly spoke-his question abrupt, lacking both context and preamble.
"If," he began, "and I mean if..."
Lucas cleared his throat before continuing, while Emma looked at him, puzzled.
"If I wanted you to help me get revenge on Theodore-your beloved son-in-law, who would you side with?"
Lucas made no effort to hide his ambition.
After all, everyone in the business world knew he and Theodore had long been rivals; their companies had gone head-to-head in more than a few major projects.
Emma's expression faltered. Her eyes flickered, and for a moment, she couldn't find an immediate reply.
Lucas gave a cold chuckle.
"What's wrong? Planning to stand by your precious son-in-law?"
He shrugged, looking entirely unconcerned.
"Forget it. No point in talking further. That's enough for today."
"I'll be heading out."
Lucas leaned on the table as he stood, wearing the bored expression of someone unwilling to waste another minute.
But just then, Emma reached out to stop him.
"Wait, Lucas. I haven't answered yet."
Lucas gave her a detached glance.
"I think... I'd help you."
Lucas let out a laugh, as if hearing a joke.
"So that means you'd be indirectly harming your dear daughter, huh? After all, she is married to Theodore now."
He laid it out plainly.
"Bringing down Theodore's company would only hurt Sigourney. There's nothing good in it for her."
Emma pressed her lips together, as though struggling with a painful decision.
"It doesn't matter, Lucas. I gave you my word."
"I'll honor any request you make, so long as it's within my ability."
"So tell me, what do you want me to do first?"
Emma asked, and only then did Lucas smirk, replying lazily.
"I only asked to test you. I haven't thought of a plan yet."
"When I figure it out, I'll let you know what I need from you."
He idly spun the coffee cup in his hand as he spoke.
"Or if you think of something useful, feel free to suggest it. I'd be very grateful."
With that, having nothing more to say, Lucas turned and took his leave.
Emma watched him go, her eyes filled with a lingering trace of emotion.
...
Evening fell
At the motor racing track,
Lucas slowly brought his bike to a stop and dismounted. He rested one hand on his motorbike-a striking crimson machine with a sleek, modern design that screamed luxury at first glance.
"Oh? A new ride, Lucas? Looks like it didn't come cheap, huh?"
Felix, Lucas's close friend, tilted his chin in greeting. Lucas gave a nod, clearly pleased with himself as he replied,
"Yeah, not cheap. It's a fully imported model. The price's almost half the value of a resort construction contract."
Felix's jaw dropped in astonishment.
"Alright then, are we racing tonight? Why are the others taking so long to get here?"
Lucas changed the subject, prompting Felix to respond,
"They're already here, waiting for you in the competition zone."
Felix gave a wink.
"But today, they don't want to race like usual. They're up for something more thrilling."
Lucas raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued.
"Oh? How thrilling?"
Felix grinned mysteriously as he spoke,
"This time, it's not just us racing like usual. Each racer has to bring a girl on the back during the race."
"The rules are still the same-whoever crosses the finish line first, wins."
Lucas scoffed with a shrug.
"Then I'm not joining. I'm only into motors, not into women."
"If you guys want to play, go ahead."
Naturally, Felix wasn't about to let Lucas off the hook.
"Come on, it's rare for you to show up. Just one round."
"There are plenty of girls in the crowd today, all kinds. Just pick one at random to ride with you."
Felix added casually,
"Besides, the stakes are high tonight."
At the glint of curiosity in Lucas's eyes, Felix smiled mysteriously.
"The winner gets the right to bid on the plot in the southeast part of the city."
Clearly, Lucas was intrigued. He changed his mind without hesitation.
"Alright then, lead the way."
Felix cheerfully pointed out the direction, and Lucas gave a slight nod of acknowledgment. Then, he slipped on his helmet and sped toward the racetrack, the roar of the crowd echoing behind him.
"Well, this is rare, Lucas. What brings you here today?"
"You know the rules tonight, don't you? You're really break your rules to bring a girl in the race?"
"Weren't you always the one disgusted by women? What now, changed your mind?"
Lucas removed his helmet and lifted his chin with a cold air.
"Cut the nonsense. You all already have your girls for the back seat?"
They laughed heartily, introducing the sexy, strikingly beautiful women standing behind them. At that moment, Lucas spoke indifferently,
"So, anyone got a girl to suggest? Preferably the quiet type, just sit still and don't try any cheap tricks to flirt while we race."
Before Felix could introduce a girl standing nearby,
someone suddenly came running down from the spectator stands,
cheerfully shouting,
"Lucas, pick me! I'm really well-behaved and won't bother you during the race!"
Lucas cast a glance at Savannah, frowning.
Her appearance was far too provocative, and her outfit left little to the imagination. She wore only a thin camisole and a pair of short shorts, revealing not just her chest, but her collarbones and most of her legs.
On top of that, her looks weren't even his type.
So, Lucas ignored her completely, turning indifferently to Felix.
"Who were you about to introduce earlier?"
Snubbed, Savannah was unwilling to back down. She stepped closer to Lucas, attempting to approach and seduce him, but Lucas swiftly took a step back, eyeing her warily.
"Hey, don't be so cold. I just want you to give me a chance," she said.
"I could sit behind you during the race. And afterward, maybe we could talk... about a potential partnership?"
The triumphant tone in Savannah's voice made Lucas scoff.
"Partnership?"
Someone like Savannah thought she was worthy of discussing partnerships with Lucas?
He didn't believe it for a second.
Savannah, misreading his reaction as interest, lifted her chin confidently.
"That's right, a partnership to take down your rival."
Normally, Savannah had no chance to get close to Lucas, so she had come to the racetrack herself, hoping to find a way in. She was sure Lucas would take the bait.
But Lucas only let out a derisive laugh.
"Move. I'm not interested."
"While I'm still being polite-get lost."
"I don't want to have to hit a woman."
There was nothing gentle about his words. His gaze was especially cold and dangerous.
Savannah still refused to give up and opened her mouth to say something more-
-but Felix quickly pulled her away,
before Lucas lost his temper.
And so, although unwilling,
Savannah was dragged away from the racetrack.
She growled in frustration.
"Damn it, I'll find another way!"
"Lucas, one day you'll regret not working with me sooner."
Savannah spoke through clenched teeth, full of resentment.
But clearly,
no one cared.Lucas returned to the race,
alongside the girl Felix had introduced.
The next day,At Wang Corporation, Just after Theodore had concluded a high-level executive meeting, Sutton quietly approached him and spoke in a low voice.
“Boss, Mr. Lancaster is here. He said he has something important to discuss with you.”
It was something Theodore had anticipated, so he simply nodded with composure.
“Where is he?”
Maintaining his usual calm demeanor, Sutton replied,
“I’ve invited him to wait for you in the guest lounge.”
Theodore gave a slight nod to indicate he understood, then made his way to the lounge where Richard was waiting. Naturally, Sutton also understood and quietly left to tend to other matters.
As soon as Theodore entered, he saw Richard glaring at him with eyes full of hatred. Theodore gave a cold smirk.
“What’s the matter, Mr. Lancaster? What brings you to my corporation today?”
“As far as I recall, our two companies aren’t working on any joint projects at the moment, are they?”
Theodore slowly sat down next to Richard, pouring himself a glass of fruit tea.
He was composed, unhurried—unlike Richard.
Richard’s fury was barely contained; his eyes burned red with rage.
“Theodore, you did it on purpose, didn’t you?”
Theodore shrugged, playing the innocent.
“On purpose? What are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
Richard had no patience for Theodore’s act. His voice turned cold and sharp.
“The Southern project your company just won the bid for—isn’t it supposed to be a luxury residential complex?”
“Why has it suddenly turned into the construction of a ring road surrounding the entire site?”
Theodore chuckled and said something that sent Richard’s fury soaring even higher.
“Mr. Lancaster, that sounds like confidential business information belonging to our company.”
“What we choose to build on our project site is entirely our prerogative.”
“What does any of that have to do with Lancaster Industries?”
Chapter 38
The one unloved is the real third party
Theodore's unnerving calmness drove Richard to let out a cold laugh.
"This has nothing to do with my corporation? You sure about that?"
Richard clenched his fists, trying to suppress the fury bubbling within.
"It's obvious you guys know that our corporation is also working on a project to develop an entertainment complex in that area."
"If your company had stuck to building a residential zone as per the original bidding plan, the two corporations could've seen this as a cooperative development."
Richard scoffed in disbelief.
"But now you've redirected to building a ring road, and the drafted blueprint conveniently encircles the very entertainment complex that our company is constructing."
"Worse yet, the road just loops around it, there's no access to our entertainment complex at all."
"How is this not an act of isolating my company's development?"
His words were sharp and logical, voice icy with accusation. He stared directly at Theodore, eyes burning with the rage of someone who had just discovered a cowardly betrayal.
But Theodore merely let out a casual "Oh?" and responded.
"Richard, first of all, that's your company's business. I have no obligation to care, do I?"
"Second, the main investor already agreed with our decision to redirect the construction. It wasn't a one-sided choice from us."
"So technically, it's legal. There's no reason for us to be condemned and criticized by your company."
Theodore took a calm sip of water, his demeanor utterly composed.
"And another thing-the traffic infrastructure in the southern part of the city is lacking. Improving it is something that should be done."
"This benefits society and the people. There doesn't seem to be any rational reason to object, does there?"
He articulated each word clearly and confidently, maintaining a cool and measured tone. His fluency only made Richard laugh again-this time in furious disbelief.
"You did it on purpose, didn't you? You had all these arguments prepared just for me?"
To claim Theodore hadn't planned this would be pure foolishness. Richard's voice turned ice-cold as he questioned, but Theodore responded with a relaxed smile.
"You're overthinking it. Just a coincidence."
"In the business world, I don't suppose I'm required to know what your corporation is building or where, am I?"
Richard wanted to argue back-desperately so-
but truth be told,
he had no grounds to refute Theodore's words.
While his breath grew heavier from suppressed frustration, Theodore remained composed, smiling faintly.
"Richard, we're both smart men."
"I believe that from the moment you decided to come between me and my wife, you must've foreseen something like this, no?"
At those words, Richard understood clearly.
This was Theodore's retaliation.
"Well done, Theodore. I won't let you stay pleased with yourself for long."
Richard had originally come here to negotiate,
but clearly, Theodore had no intention of cooperating.
So then, he no longer saw any reason to waste his time here.
Furious, he stood and turned to leave.
"Let's look forward to a major plunge in your company's stock price, shall we?"
Just before Richard left, Theodore didn't hesitate to provoke him.
His words, naturally, only fueled Richard's rage further.
He slammed the door hard on his way out.
...
In the days that followed,
just as Richard had warned,
he pursued Sigourney aggressively.
From sending her grand, ostentatious bouquets of red roses without pause,
to attending every evening party where Sigourney was present,
always making a point to stand close to her.
Not to mention, before the press, Richard didn't shy away from admitting he was courting Sigourney.
He even made a public declaration:
"I know that since Sigourney is married, pursuing her is wrong. But I simply can't stop what my heart feels."
Facing the reporters' cameras, he smiled gently.
"Besides, the marriage between Theodore and Sigourney is purely a business arrangement, there's no real love in it. What's wrong with me chasing true love?"
In fact, Richard went as far as to say many blatantly inappropriate things.
"The one unloved is the real third party. I believe that my love and sincerity will eventually touch Sigourney's heart."
The announcement-arrogant yet heartfelt-naturally stirred the media.
But for Sigourney, it only brought a splitting headache.
When she happened to run into Richard again during a lunch outing with Venus, Sigourney finally lost her composure.
"Are you seriously still not giving up? I've told you countless times already, Richard-your presence doesn't move me."
"It's nothing but a nuisance."
Richard was in no way disheartened by Sigourney's rejection. In fact, it only seemed to fuel his enthusiasm.
Unbothered by Venus's presence, he spoke openly to Sigourney.
"It's alright, Sigourney."
"I'll find a way to warm that cold heart of yours."
"Would it be alright if I joined you for lunch? I'm familiar with the owner of this restaurant. I could recommend some of the most famous dishes here."
Richard offered warmly. Venus, of course, didn't dare respond.
As for Sigourney, she narrowed her eyes at Richard, impatience clear in her gaze.
"It's not alright. We only have a short time to eat and rest."
Sigourney let out a dry, sardonic laugh.
"So, Mr. Lancaster, would you kindly step aside?"
"Stop wasting our time."
Her voice was firm, giving no room for concession.
At that moment, Richard finally stepped aside for the two of them, albeit reluctantly.
But clearly,
he had no intention of giving up.
And at the same time,
Savannah wasn't planning to give up either.
After being blatantly ignored by Lucas at the racetrack that day,
Savannah made up her mind to strike back.
Tonight,
she dressed more modestly-a pale blue shirt paired with gray shorts.
As soon as Lucas stepped onto the racetrack with his friend,
Savannah rushed over again, just like she did the last time.
The people around them exchanged knowing glances as Savannah spoke up.
"Lucas, I know you and your friends are racing again tonight, just like last time, each of you with a girl riding on the back."
"I can be the one riding with you. But if you win, could we talk afterward?"
"I really have something important to discuss."
Savannah's voice was sincere this time, no longer flirtatious like before.
But unfortunately, Lucas still had absolutely no interest in her.
He sneered.
"What makes you think I'd let you on my motorbike with me? So full of yourself."
Felix, hearing Lucas's mocking tone, quickly tried to smooth things over.
"Come on, Lucas. It's rare for a pretty girl to be this forward-don't make her feel bad."
Savannah clenched her fists. Knowing full well that charm wouldn't work on Lucas, she got straight to the point.
"Aren't you guys racing on the mountain route tonight? I'm sure the girls riding with you will be scared or hesitant."
She spoke with certainty, then looked Lucas straight in the eye.
"But I'm different. I promise I'm not afraid of speed, and I won't distract you while you ride."
"Even if I get injured, or if there's an accident, I accept that."
Because Savannah knew well, racing always came with its own risks.
And so, she was willing to make a trade.
"Besides, what I'm about to propose will definitely bring you significant benefits."
"Because it's directly related to toppling your biggest rival in the business world."
Savannah's words, unsurprisingly, caused Lucas to waver.
Lucas tilted his head, narrowing his eyes as he questioned her.
“Are you sure? What if the benefits aren’t enough to satisfy me?”
He threw the question back at her, his gaze slowly scanning her face, weighing the truth behind her words.
Savannah let out a quiet breath of relief, having successfully captured his attention. A faint smile curved on her lips.
“I’ll make sure you’re satisfied.”
“Just give me a chance. In fact, my plan might give you more than just satisfaction.”
