Reborn for revenge-my husband is mine - Chapter 19

Chapter 19

The following evening,
As promised,
Theodore took Sigourney to a renowned boutique that carried evening gowns from many prestigious designer brands, allowing her to choose and try on whichever she liked.
To be honest, though Sigourney was no stranger to shopping at luxury brands, even she felt slightly overwhelmed by the extravagance of this place.
There were far too many gowns from internationally acclaimed designers and all from their latest collections.
It took her nearly half an hour before she finally settled on one that pleased her.
An evening gown from a world-famous fashion house.
It was a strapless white gown with a fishtail hem that beautifully revealed Sigourney's slender figure and long legs.
Along the dress, shimmering crystals in bright tones were meticulously sewn in, catching the light and gleaming with every step she took.
It came with a white fur shawl-extremely soft to the touch.
Sigourney admired herself in the mirror with satisfaction.
Her delicate figure was completely accentuated-the elegant collarbones left bare, her porcelain skin glowing even more luminously under the lights, drawing the eye irresistibly.
The fur shawl draped over her arms like a silk ribbon, adding a sensual yet not overly revealing touch to the ensemble.
Perfect.
Even the boutique staff who had helped Sigourney into the dress couldn't help but exclaim in admiration.
"Miss, you truly look stunning in this gown. I dare say, if you choose this one, you'll undoubtedly be the most radiant guest at tonight's banquet."
The comment may have been a touch exaggerated, but Sigourney still tilted her head slightly and offered a polite smile of thanks.
Then she stepped out to where Theodore was waiting.
"So? What do you think of the gown? Is it beautiful?"
Sigourney drew back the curtain and walked out, and for a split second, Theodore was stunned.
Bathed in the store's bright lights, her beauty was simply dazzling.
Even without any makeup, Sigourney was already breathtaking.
The gown hugged her perfectly, highlighting every elegant line of her figure.
Theodore gave a soft cough, needing a moment to regain his usual composure before replying with calm restraint,
"It's fine. Very beautiful."
"We will take this one."
He tilted his head and spoke to the staff member walking behind Sigourney, then walked with her toward the cashier.
Sigourney, noticing Theodore's slightly hurried manner, couldn't help but feel surprised.
She picked up her phone from the table and glanced at the time.
It was still early, wasn't it?
Why was Theodore in such a rush?
Sigourney didn't quite understand, but she merely shrugged and followed him to the counter where he stood waiting.
She vaguely felt that ever since she had stepped out in the gown, something about Theodore's demeanor had changed.
He occasionally avoided her gaze,
With a look of-
Nervousness?
The thought only made Sigourney more puzzled. She shook her head, trying to dismiss the fleeting idea.
After completing the payment, Theodore took Sigourney to a makeup studio, and only then did they head to the evening banquet.
As expected,
The banquet was held at one of the most luxurious restaurants in the city, and the décor was especially grand.
When Sigourney and Theodore entered together, they immediately attracted countless gazes. After all, Theodore was a key figure at the event, and everyone's attention naturally gravitated toward him.
No sooner had they arrived than several of Theodore's business associates came forward to greet him, offering compliments about Sigourney's beauty.
Sigourney maintained a graceful smile, skillfully accompanying Theodore as they socialized with the guests.
"We meet again-what a coincidence, Sigourney."
Richard suddenly appeared nearby and greeted her with polite formality. Though his tone remained calm and composed, Sigourney couldn't shake the feeling of discomfort.
As if she were being... teased.
Besides, what coincidence?
Were they that close?
Suppressing her distaste, Sigourney responded with a faint smile and echoed his words: "What a coincidence."
But Richard didn't stop there. He continued with more praise.
"I already thought you were beautiful before, but tonight, in this gown, you're like a celestial being."
"It's truly hard to take my eyes off you."

Chapter 20: Fateful encounter

Richard kept his eyes fixed on Sigourney, unabashedly flirting.
Sigourney merely smiled without responding, yet Richard still wasn't finished-he added a few more nauseatingly sweet lines.
Enough to make her skin crawl.
Even Theodore, standing right beside Sigourney, furrowed his brows slightly.
From what he recalled, Sigourney and Richard weren't exactly close-so why was Richard now wearing such a lovestruck expression as he looked at her?
A man's instinct told him something was off.
Fortunately, Richard eventually stopped with his foolish rambling and shifted to a more composed conversation with Theodore.
During that time, Sigourney pretended to spot someone familiar across the room and seized the chance to slip away.
She had no interest in listening to the empty drivel of that lunatic Richard.
A "fateful encounter" while he was out shopping with his lover?
Nonsense.
Sigourney made her way over to the dessert table and picked out a few sweet pastries to nibble on. After spending the entire afternoon trying on outfits and getting her makeup done with Theodore, she was already feeling quite hungry.
Thankfully, the food here tasted quite good, so Sigourney enjoyed her small bites in a rather cheerful mood.
That is until someone came to ruin it.
"Sigourney, why didn't you come with Savannah? Aren't the two of you really close?"
Savannah's close friend, Nanny, approached her, asking the question out of habit.
Sigourney looked up, and suddenly, the pastry in her mouth didn't taste so good anymore.
She glanced at Nanny, catching the implication behind her words, and smiled faintly.
"That's a matter of my family. What does it have to do with you?"
"If you're so close to Savannah, then when she was stripped of her status in the family, why didn't you help her?"
"Aren't the two of you best friends?"
For a split second, Nanny's expression flickered with guilt-but she still forced her tone to sound righteous.
"What are you talking about? How could I meddle in your family affairs?"
"I just think Savannah's pitiful. She was clearly set up and sabotaged by a vicious sister like you."
Nanny glared at Sigourney with open hostility, her eyes brimming with resentment.
Sigourney didn't know exactly what lies Savannah had fed Nanny-
But clearly,
Savannah had twisted everything and pinned all the blame on her.
Sigourney had no interest in arguing-especially not at an evening gala filled with so many people.
She simply said she had something to do and walked away before Nanny could follow or utter any more foolish words.
To her surprise, the rooftop didn't just have a breezy open-air balcony-
It also featured a spacious swimming pool.
A luxurious, glass-edged pool with a sense of privacy and elegance.
While the men downstairs gathered in groups, speaking seriously in their formal suits,
The women-dressed in glamorous gowns-sat by the pool, chatting leisurely, reclining on lounge chairs, and sipping cocktails together.
The atmosphere here was far livelier and more relaxed than the formality below.
Sigourney ran into a few acquaintances and joined them for conversation.
She sipped her cocktail, letting herself enjoy the fresh air and laid-back ambiance-
Doing her best to shake off the discomfort Nanny had stirred just moments before.
Their conversation, unsurprisingly, revolved around their husbands' work-
And when it wasn't that, it was about flaunting how much they were pampered, and the lavish gifts they'd received.
"This diamond-studded watch was a gift from my husband during one of his overseas business trips. I heard it's incredibly expensive-easily over a billion dong,"
One woman said brightly, pointing at the watch on her wrist.
The others around her began to chime in with admiration, following up by showing off their expensive accessories right there on the spot.
Sigourney, naturally, simply listened and maintained her poised, graceful smile.
"Sigourney, why aren't you saying anything? Theodore's quite wealthy, and the two of you seem so close-I'm sure he's bought you plenty of luxurious gifts, hasn't he?"
"Let us admire some of them?"
A gentle-looking woman initiated the conversation with Sigourney.
Sigourney was about to casually brush it off with a vague response when another woman leaned in and examined her dress more closely, then exclaimed.
"No wonder this dress looked familiar to me-it's the latest couture release from 'Her Design,' isn't it?"
"I heard it's worth no less than half a million dollars. Theodore must've bought it for you, right?"
Before Sigourney could say another word, the women around her began praising the dress, complimenting its beauty-
And admiring how Theodore must truly spoil her,
Leaving Sigourney unsure how to respond.
Noticing that the attention was gradually shifting toward her,
Sigourney waited until everyone had finished talking about her—
Then found an excuse to move to a more open space.
She preferred quiet.
And she didn’t enjoy being the center of conversations.
All she wanted was to stand still, enjoy her cocktail in peace, nothing more.
Sigourney stood by the pool, savoring the refreshing openness of the space.
What she didn’t expect—
Was that while she was quietly unwinding,
Someone approached her,
Eyes burning with unmistakable hatred,
Then, without warning,
Shoved Sigourney hard into the pool,
Before quickly turning and walking away.

Chapter 21:

 Someone's fallen into the water!

Sigourney lost her balance and fell in, the loud splash cutting through the air and bringing all conversations around to an abrupt halt.
Everyone was stunned by the sudden turn of events and rushed over to see what had happened.
"Someone help her, I don't know how to swim!"
"Call security! Hurry, someone's fallen into the water!"
"How did someone fall in here? Who is she?"
Amid the chaos of voices, Sigourney struggled in the water.
But because the shove had been too forceful, she had hit the edge of the pool as she fell, causing a cramp in her leg.
So each time she managed to surface, she would sink back down again, gradually slipping toward the bottom of the pool.
While everyone hesitated, exchanging looks but too unsure to jump in, and a few rushed off to get help-
A woman swiftly shrugged off the coat she was wearing, tossed her handbag onto the poolside,
Then plunged into the water without hesitation,
Diving down to rescue Sigourney.
By now, Sigourney was barely conscious-her awareness dim and fading-
But she could still feel herself being held from behind, as the woman carefully pulled her toward the surface.
Thankfully, Sigourney didn't resist or struggle.
Instead, she let herself lean against the girl, borrowing her strength to float up,
So the rescue wasn't too difficult.Once she was brought up, a crowd quickly gathered around to check on Sigourney.
Her whole body was soaked through, her face pale from being underwater too long, her skin deathly white.
Her hair clung to her cheeks, giving her a pitiful appearance, and she kept coughing up water from the pool.
Though drenched from head to toe,
The woman who had just jumped in remained calm, carefully helping Sigourney sit up and gently patting her back,
Helping her cough out the water and breathe normally again.
A few other women, who had only now snapped out of their shock, began comforting her and asking how she was.
Just then, the rescue team arrived, along with several men from downstairs,
Who hurried up to check on what was happening. Theodore arrived as well.
At first, he had only come out of curiosity to see what was going on, but he hadn't expected to find his wife surrounded by a crowd.
Clearly, she looked pitiful-just pulled out of the water, her small face pale, and her body trembling uncontrollably. Theodore rushed over, immediately removing his suit jacket and wrapping it around Sigourney to keep her warm, then asked anxiously:
"Sigourney, what happened? Was it you who fell into the water?"
Seeing Theodore's familiar face, Sigourney, for some reason, felt an odd sense of reassurance.
She gave a small nod, leaning slightly against him as she coughed and softly replied,
"Yes, I fell into the water. I was standing near the pool enjoying the breeze when someone gave me a strong push, and I fell in."
Sigourney spoke calmly, but Theodore's eyes instantly reddened with anger.
His hand clenched slightly as he suddenly caught wind of the murmurs around them.
"You've got to be kidding-someone dares to act like this just because the hotel's camera is down?"
"That's right. The pool camera just broke today. The person who pushed her must've known and deliberately taken advantage of it."
"..."
Amid the noise and whispers, Theodore stated firmly that he would find out who had pushed Sigourney.
He then thanked the woman beside them who had rescued her, and carefully lifted Sigourney in his arms, carrying her down to the hotel lobby.
He quickly booked a room upstairs and asked the receptionist to prepare a change of clothes for Sigourney. Without delay, Theodore carried her up to the room.
While waiting for the staff to bring the clothes, Theodore urged Sigourney to take a shower, remove her wet clothes, and put on a bathrobe for now.
Sigourney nodded and followed his instructions in a daze, and Theodore respectfully stepped outside to wait.
While she showered, Theodore didn't remain idle.
He made several phone calls, determined to track down the person who had pushed Sigourney into the pool....
When Sigourney finished showering and stepped out,
she saw Theodore sitting on the bed, his expression cold and filled with anger, his jaw tightly clenched.
While drying her hair, she asked vaguely,
"What's wrong with you? Is there any problem?"
Theodore lifted his head to look at Sigourney, his voice low and icy, as if he were grinding his teeth.
"Just as they said-the camera on that floor was broken, so it didn't capture anything around the pool."
He sighed before adding,
"So there's no way to know who pushed you into the water."
Sigourney nodded. Although she felt a bit disappointed, she didn't say anything more.
Whoever did it had clearly anticipated this beforehand, making sure the cameras were out of order before taking action.
Nothing unexpected, really.
Now that her initial fear had passed, Sigourney finished drying her hair and gently asked Theodore who the woman was that had saved her earlier.
"It was Kate, the wife of the CEO of a well-known domestic jewelry company. Don't worry. I've already arranged for a proper thank-you to be sent to her."
Theodore's efficiency put Sigourney at ease, and she gave him a slight nod in gratitude.
With that, the incident could be considered closed.
...
A few days later,
Sigourney was fully focused on reading through an important company contract when her secretary, Venus, knocked on the door.
"Come in!"
Upon hearing her voice, Venus stepped in and respectfully said,
"Director, it's almost time for your dinner appointment with the CEO of Ruby Corporation."
Sigourney turned her head toward Venus and nodded calmly. She closed her laptop and stretched slightly as she stood up.
"Alright. Let's go, then."
Venus followed Sigourney respectfully, and together they left the company to head to the reserved restaurant.
Ruby Corporation was an important client for their company this quarter, so naturally, tonight's dinner was a significant occasion.
Sigourney and Venus arrived twenty minutes ahead of schedule. After waiting a short while, Mr. Leo, the CEO of Ruby Corporation-finally appeared.
But he didn't come alone.
Following behind him was someone Sigourney could only describe as uncomfortably familiar-Richard.
Sigourney instinctively furrowed her brows the moment she saw him.
"Good evening, and apologies for arriving late, miss..."
Leo Barrett greeted her courteously with a slight bow before introducing the man beside him.
"My apologies for not informing you in advance-this is Richard Lancaster, CEO of Lancaster Industries, and a close business partner of my corporation..."
Under the surprised gazes of both Sigourney and Venus, Barrett went on to explain Richard's identity,
as well as the reason for his presence today.
He had brought Richard along to introduce him to Sigourney, in hopes of smoothing the way for potential collaboration between their companies in the future.
In simpler terms, this dinner was meant to strengthen business ties between all parties involved.
Naturally, Sigourney appreciated this effort to build connections-
in the world of business, knowing the CEO of a major corporation was undeniably valuable.
If only it weren't Richard.
Still, Sigourney graciously expressed her gratitude to Barrett and responded politely.
But throughout the exchange,
she was acutely aware-
Richard's eyes never left her.
There was something almost mesmerized and intent in his gaze,
it made her skin crawl.
"Is something the matter, Mr. Richard? Is there something on my face that makes you look at me like that?"
At last, unable to hold back any longer, Sigourney asked politely. Her voice was soft, her gaze steady as she tried to maintain her composure, though her hands clenched tightly to keep herself from angry.
But Richard merely leaned lazily back against the chair and replied with a nonchalant tone.
"On your face? Nothing at all—except for beauty."
He smiled faintly, the picture of suave indifference.
"I'm simply admiring how Miss Nichols is both beautiful and talented."
"A woman so independent and flawless—like a captivating rose."
"You make it impossible for me to take my eyes off you."
Richard spoke in a flirtatious tone, no different from the empty compliments he had thrown her way at the evening party not long ago.
Sigourney frowned slightly, her hands tightening even more as she resisted the urge to fling the glass of water on the table straight into his face.

Chapter 22:

 I don't care that you're Theodore's wife

Fortunately, Barrett was emotionally intelligent enough to keep the atmosphere light, allowing the conversation to proceed with relative ease. While he and Sigourney discussed the potential partnership and the current situation of their respective corporations, Richard had the decency to remain silent.
He said nothing.
The meal passed quickly, and all the while, Sigourney silently wished it would end even sooner.
When Barrett, ever perceptive, picked up on her discomfort and offered a polite smile as he mentioned he had to leave for another engagement, she almost let out a sigh of relief.
With a gentle tone, she told him there was no need for formality, then stood alongside Venus to see him out.
However, the man who had accompanied him - Richard - not only showed no intention of leaving, but instead turned to Sigourney with a casual smile.
"Miss Nichols, do you have a moment? I want to speak with you privately."
Just as Sigourney narrowed her eyes in irritation, ready to decline, he added quickly,
"It's important. It's about the person who pushed you at the party the other night."
Sigourney immediately faltered, her gaze wary as it landed on Richard.
Of course, she wanted to return home, but she also wanted to know what Richard truly had to say.
In the end, Sigourney clenched her fists slightly, then tilted her head toward Venus.
"I need to talk to him for a bit. Mr. Leo has already left, you can go too."
Venus didn't ask further questions. She nodded politely, then quickly took her leave.
Now, Sigourney dropped the gentle smile from earlier and, with a touch of impatience, addressed Richard.
"What do you want to say? Don't waste my time - speak."
Noticing the abrupt shift in her tone, Richard seemed rather amused, even entertained. He chuckled softly.
"Quite the quick change in attitude. But never mind, I won't hold it against a pretty lady."
"A little indulgence never hurts."
Richard put on an innocent expression, shrugged, and finally got straight to the point.
"I know who pushed you. I've found the evidence."
Sigourney, of course, wasn't foolish enough to believe Richard was acting out of goodwill. Narrowing her eyes, she looked at him coolly and said with calm composure,
"What's the price for your revelation?"
Her sharpness made Richard laugh.
"Hey, I'm starting to like your bluntness more and more."
"I don't need much," he said plainly.
"Just don't turn me down too coldly when I try to pursue you."
"I don't care that you're Theodore's wife. I believe my charm is enough to make you reconsider."
Richard's confidence made Sigourney frown. She picked up her purse and stood up.
"Then there's nothing to discuss. Goodbye."
His smile vanished instantly, and he called after her,
"Hey, don't go. Fine - what if I change the terms?"
Sigourney stopped in place, arms crossed, as she stared at him.
"How about a collaborative project with your corporation? Don't worry, all the terms are fair - it's just a mutually beneficial deal, nothing shady."
"Besides, this project needs your approval before it can move forward. It's not a trap - I promise."
Sigourney stayed silent for a moment, then calmly took her seat again.
"Alright. It better be just as you say."
"Now talk. Who was it that pushed me that night?"
She asked, and Richard looked at her with a gentle gaze as he replied,
"It was Nanny - Savannah's close friend."
Sigourney narrowed her eyes as he added,
"She knew the poolside camera on the rooftop was broken, which is why she dared to pull such a stunt. But she forgot one thing - the hallway camera leading to the rooftop was still functioning."
Richard didn't say much more. He explained it succinctly, then handed over the CCTV footage he had copied for her to see.
It was obvious that Richard had studied the footage carefully - perhaps even repeatedly. The camera had only captured a blurry glimpse of Nanny's back as she rushed up to the rooftop shortly after Sigourney had gone up.
And then, the hurried figure of her retreating with a pale face, her movements stiff and trembling slightly.
"This is Nanny leaving the scene in a panic after pushing you into the pool," Richard said calmly, handing Sigourney the iPad once again. "There's another clip - this one captured her back just as she pushed you."
The footage was taken from a considerable distance, but with effort, the outline could still be made out.
Nanny slowly approached from behind Sigourney, and then -
With calculated precision, she shoved her hard into the rooftop pool, taking advantage of a moment when no one was looking.
Sigourney unconsciously clenched her fists.
"I'll send you the evidence," Richard said.
"What do you plan to do with it?"
Arms crossed, he raised his chin slightly, watching her. But Sigourney blinked.
"That sounds like a personal matter, doesn't it?" she replied coolly.
"I have my own way of handling things."
"No need for you to concern yourself."
She spoke slowly, every word calm and deliberate.
After all, she already had everything mapped out in her mind.
Richard shrugged - since she'd made her stance clear, there was no reason for him to push further.
Once Sigourney had received all the necessary footage, she turned the topic back to the earlier condition.
"When will you be available?"
"My secretary and I will visit your corporation to continue the discussion."
She proposed a time, which Richard accepted without complaint.
And with that, Sigourney said nothing more. She turned and walked away without hesitation.
Richard's eyes followed the slender figure of hers as she left -
And for a brief moment, he felt an unexpected sense of longing.
...
The following day,
at the Maple estate,
the sharp sound of shattering porcelain echoed through the halls, making the servants lower their heads in alarm, hardly daring to breathe.
Along with the crash of an expensive porcelain tea set smashing to pieces, the furious voice of a man rang out, unmistakably furious.
"Nanny Maple, are you crazy? Or are you just plain stupid?"
Samuel's voice cracked with rage as he hurled a nearby antique vase toward Nanny, roaring,
"You slept with some blond-haired bartender, then were dumb enough to let the press catch wind of it and blast it all over the internet."
"Are you trying to drag the entire Maple family's honor through the mud? Fucking stupid!"
He slammed the words out, eyes blazing as he glared at her.
"Why aren't you saying anything? Cat got your tongue?"
Nanny had long since dropped to her knees, trembling. Her pale face was twisted with fear as she shook her head over and over.
"No, Dad. I swear - I was set up."
"I was drunk last night, and that bartender tricked me into a one-night stand. I'm not that kind of girl - I'm not easy, I swear."
Her voice trembled with humiliation and helplessness, but Samuel wasn't listening. Instead, he let out a cold, mocking laugh.
"Set up? If you weren't stupid and so pathetically easy, who would've even had the chance to set you up?"
"Do you even realize what kind of consequences your stupidity has caused?"
His voice rose to a roar.
"The Graham family is demanding to annul your engagement to Lucas Graham. They said your reputation and dignity have already been dragged through the mud, and a scandalous woman like you doesn't deserve to marry into their family."
"In other words, your engagement is finished. And don't even dream of marrying into any other respectable family in this country ever again."

Chapter 23:

I wonder how long that pride will last once I ruin you

Desperation clouded Nanny's eyes.
"No... this can't be. Dad, please help me..."
"Lucas loves me - he does! He would never agree to call off the engagement..."
On her knees, Nanny crawled toward Samuel, struggling to clutch at his leg, begging. But he stepped aside in disgust, sneering down at her.
"Now you regret it? Too late."
"No matter how madly Lucas might've loved you, there's no way he'll accept a woman as cheap as you."
Samuel's voice dripped with disdain as he narrowed his eyes at her.
"For now, stay home. Don't even think about stepping outside and stirring up more trouble."
He gave strict orders to the butler and household staff - Nanny was not to be allowed out. Then, he turned and stormed upstairs in anger.
Behind him, Nanny remained on her knees, her face as pale as death, consumed by despair.
"Who exposed it...? Everything had been covered up so carefully before..."
...
When Sigourney heard about Nanny's scandal, she was out surveying the market for her corporation's upcoming collaboration project, accompanied by Venus.
"Director, I think this location has great potential-"
Venus was mid-sentence when Sigourney's phone rang. Sigourney raised a hand, signaling her to pause, then told Venus to wait and stepped aside to take the call.
It was Theodore.
"Are you free Saturday evening? Join me at a charity auction."
He didn't waste time on pleasantries - just got straight to the point.
Sigourney mentally ran through her schedule and replied,
"Yes, I'll be free then..."
She was about to say something more when -
someone suddenly approached from behind.
A white cloth soaked in chloroform was clamped tightly over her mouth.
Her consciousness slipped away almost instantly, and she collapsed, the phone falling from her hand with a sharp, piercing clatter.
"Hey, are you there? Sigourney?"
By the time Theodore's voice came through, Sigourney had already been whisked away by a group of strangers, carried swiftly to a black car waiting nearby.
Then -
the vehicle sped off, faster than the wind.
Hearing nothing more from her, Theodore's voice grew more urgent. But there was no response.
"..."
His hand clenched instinctively.
Something was very, very wrong.
The musty stench in the air jolted Sigourney awake.
She let out a soft cough, the thick layer of dust clinging to the atmosphere seeping into every breath, making her chest feel unbearably tight.
Pushing past the discomfort, Sigourney slowly opened her eyes and looked around.
It appeared to be an abandoned mansion, likely far from the city center -
because not a single sound of traffic reached her ears.
Everything around her was unnaturally silent.
She narrowed her eyes, calmly rotated her wrists, and began working on the ropes binding her hands.
She had long since mastered this technique - and within moments, the rope fell away.
Keeping her composure, Sigourney quickly bent down and wrapped the rope loosely around her wrists again, making it appear as if she were still tied.
Just as she finished this sequence of movements,
a group of people entered the room.
As she had suspected, they were all dressed in dark clothing, their faces obscured by black masks that revealed only their eyes.
Seeing her awake and quietly observing them,
one of the figures let out a low, amused chuckle.
Sigourney guessed he was the leader of the group.
"Awake already, sweetheart? Want something to eat?"
When he noticed the caution in her eyes, he sneered, as if trying to reassure her.
"Relax. We weren't hired to hurt you. We're just here to extort your husband for ransom."
"The person who hired us will speak to you soon. Until then, we won't lay a finger on you."
Sigourney didn't respond to his initial offer. Instead, she met his gaze directly and asked without hesitation,
"Who hired you guys? And how much are they paying you guys?"
Her question caught the leader off guard - surprise flickered across his masked face.
Sigourney, calm and deliberate, began to negotiate.
"I can pay you double. Triple. Even ten times the amount."
"Just let me go."
She kept her voice low, testing the waters.
Seeing the masked group exchange confused glances, Sigourney pressed further.
"Don't worry, I have no intention of calling the police or doing anything that would get you in trouble."
"Just tell me who's behind this, let me go, and name your price. I'll pay whatever you ask."
A flicker of hesitation crossed the leader's eyes. But just as Sigourney prepared to push her advantage, he let out a cold, mocking laugh.
"Sounds too easy, doesn't it? You think we're that gullible?"
"Who's to say you won't call the cops the moment you step out of this hellhole and get us all thrown behind bars?"
His eyes were full of distrust as he stared her down.
The man beside him - clearly a loyal subordinate - added darkly,
"We're still being polite here. You'd better behave and stop trying to pull anything."
"Otherwise... we can't guarantee you'll return to your family in one piece."
The chilling tone of his voice made Sigourney fall silent.
She was smart enough to know when to stop. For now, she said nothing.
"Should we tie her to that chair over there?" the subordinate asked in a low voice, glancing at Sigourney sitting quietly in the corner.
"That way she won't act up anymore."
The leader nodded.
"Yeah. Tie her up tight. Bind her to the chair."
Hearing that, Sigourney's expression faltered slightly - a trace of apprehension flickering in her eyes.
She tightened her fists, keeping up the illusion that she was already tightly bound, while her heartbeat began to race with every step the henchman took toward her.
She clenched her teeth, bracing for the worst.
But luckily-
Just as the henchman moved in to check her restraints,
the door swung open.
A woman stood in the doorway, her figure silhouetted against the light.
With an air of authority, she spoke to the group inside.
"That's enough. All of you, out."
"I want a word with her - alone."
No one questioned it.
They all nodded and filed out swiftly, leaving only the two of them in the room.
Sigourney lifted her eyes toward the woman, her voice cold as ice.
"It's you."
The moment she heard her speak, Sigourney knew.
The mastermind behind this-
exactly who she'd suspected.
Savannah smirked, strutting forward and sitting down directly across from her, satisfaction gleaming in her eyes.
"So what if it's me?"
Her gaze turned wild.
"You schemed to get me disinherited - stripped of everything I was owed. Kicked out of the family with nothing."
"You think I wouldn't retaliate? What kind of idiot do you take me for?"
Savannah reached out and grabbed Sigourney's face, squeezing harshly until red marks bloomed on her cheek.
"Don't look at me like that. Drop that high-and-mighty act."
"Get on your knees and beg, maybe I'll let you live."
Sigourney pretended to tremble, her voice quivering.
"But... why are you doing this? What do you want?"
Unaware that Sigourney was probing for information, Savannah replied with childlike cruelty,
"Why? For revenge, of course."
"And to extort some money from your rich husband while I'm at it."
Knowing Sigourney had no way to escape, Savannah didn't bother hiding anything.
"Two million dollars, my dear sister. That's what I asked for."
"With that kind of cash, I can disappear overseas and start a brand-new life."
Her bloodshot eyes narrowed as she gripped Sigourney's face harder, her voice laced with madness.
"You people shut every door on me in this country - so I have no choice but to carve out my own path."
As she spoke, her fury only grew.
She gave a twisted laugh and pulled a dagger from her coat, spinning it between her fingers with eerie calm.
After a few slow turns, she held it close to Sigourney's face, smirking.
