Chapter 24
After today, don't even think about coming back
Savannah moved so swiftly that Sigourney didn't have time to react.
Sigourney silently cursed, this wasn't good, holding her breath as she tried to negotiate.
"Wait, we can still talk this through."
She was calculating her chances of staying safe if she resisted, while also trying to calm Savannah's frenzied emotions.
"I can help you reclaim your inheritance from the Nichols family."
Savannah's grip on the knife loosened slightly, and Sigourney continued explaining.
"What happened to your position in the Nichols family really had nothing to do with me. The rumors about you seducing Theodore, they weren't spread by me."
Sigourney tried to reason with her.
"Besides, that scandal affected me too. I'm not stupid enough to let a private family matter turn into a public love triangle scandal, am I?"
Sigourney kept her tone soft, hoping to keep Savannah from doing anything reckless. But Savannah, already out of patience, cut her off.
"I don't care whether you did it or not. But how exactly are you going to help me get my inheritance back?"
Savannah tilted her chin up, staring at Sigourney as she calmly slid the knife back into her pocket.
Sigourney let out a faint sigh of relief-
Only to be caught off guard when Savannah suddenly yanked her hair, pulling so hard that her scalp went numb from the pain.
"Speak. Or are you about to throw some dumb words at me again?"
Savannah gripped Sigourney's hair tightly, and her fingers brushed against something hard hidden in Sigourney's hair clip.
Curious, Savannah ripped the clip from Sigourney's head. Sigourney shut her eyes tightly in despair, clenching her fists, preparing for the worst.
"Damn it, Sigourney. You dared to play me."
"You set me up. You bitch!"
Savannah screamed the moment she discovered what the hard object in the hair clip was.
It was a miniature recorder.
And attached to it, a tiny GPS tracker.
Savannah crushed the device in her hand, her face pale, while her eyes turned bloodshot red.
She stared at Sigourney, pulled out the dagger once more, and lunged at her.
"After today, don't even think about coming back."
Sigourney sprang to her feet in a flash, dodging the strike just in time under Savannah's stunned gaze.
But Savannah's fury exploded even further when she realized Sigourney was no longer tied up.
Like a madwoman, she charged after Sigourney, stabbing wildly at her.
Sigourney dodged nimbly while sprinting toward the door.
However, she was quickly caught up by Savannah.
Savannah cornered Sigourney against the wall and thrust the knife toward her like a bullet.
The corners of her lips curled into a wicked smile.
The blade flashed with a strange glint, as eerie as Savannah's grin.
Just as Sigourney closed her eyes in despair, bracing for the worst-
what she didn't expect was-
someone struck Savannah's arm hard enough to numb it, causing the knife to fall from her hand.
Then, she was forcefully kicked and sent sprawling several feet away.
In Savannah's horrified gaze, a swarm of police officers stormed in and quickly subdued her.
"What is this? Why are you arresting me?"
"Are you insane? What crime did I commit?"
As for Sigourney, it was only when she heard Savannah's scream of pain as she hit the ground, followed by her frantic shouting, that she finally opened her eyes from the shock.
She was immediately pulled into a warm embrace.
"Are you okay? I'm sorry I was late."
"You must have been terrified, right?"
Theodore gently rubbed her back, noticing how she trembled nonstop. After all, the situation had been far too dangerous-it was only natural for Sigourney to be afraid.
Sigourney clutched tightly onto the fabric of Theodore's shirt, burying herself in his chest. Only then did she finally allow herself to lower her guard.
Savannah's curses still echoed through the space. She continued to scream wildly.
"Let me go! You bastards, aren't you going to save me?"
Clearly, no one could save Savannah now. The people she had hired were also being restrained by the police.
Theodore cast a cold glance at Savannah, a flash of killing intent in his eyes. But he focused only on comforting Sigourney and quickly led her away.
"Let's go. I'll take you home."
Seeing the color gradually return to Sigourney's pale face, Theodore spoke softly to soothe her. Sigourney nodded and left with him.
However-
just as Sigourney and Theodore turned their backs,
Savannah suddenly struggled violently, breaking free from the police's grip,
and charged toward Sigourney while swiftly pulling out another dagger hidden inside her shirt.
"Sigourney, you bitch. Don't even think about living well."
Savannah screamed in a frenzy, then used all her strength to stab the knife fiercely toward Sigourney again.
Everything happened so fast that no one had time to react-
but at that fateful moment,
Theodore managed to respond just in time.
By instinct, he pulled Sigourney tightly into his arms while she was still stunned,
shielding her from harm,
However, in doing so, he inadvertently put himself in danger.
The sound of the sharp blade piercing flesh rang out, met by the shocked eyes of both Savannah and Sigourney.
Of course, by that point, the police around them had already reacted,
once again apprehending Savannah and locking her in handcuffs so she would have no further chance to do anything foolish.
They reassured Sigourney, telling her to take Theodore away first-
they would handle everything else.
Sigourney thanked them, though her mind was hazy and disoriented.
"Theodore, are you okay? Please, hang in there."
Blood soaked down, staining the hem of Theodore's shirt a deep crimson.
He gripped the handle of the knife embedded in his abdomen, his arm turning pale as snow.
Sigourney trembled at the sight, her voice faltering, the corners of her eyes welling up with tears.
"I'm okay. Don't worry, Sigourney. As long as you're safe, that's all that matters."
Tears streamed down Sigourney's face as she helped Theodore into the police car to get him to the emergency room.
Theodore forced a faint smile, trying to comfort her.
He wasn't lying. Truly-knowing Sigourney was safe was enough for him.
Sigourney treated Theodore like fragile porcelain, carefully supporting him step by step until he was finally seated securely in the car.
Receiving a towel from a female officer inside the vehicle, Sigourney's hands trembled as she tried to stop the bleeding.
But the wound was deep-bright red blood had already soaked through a large section of the towel, glaring and vivid.
Her tears continued to fall like a stream. She held Theodore tightly, whispering to comfort him through sobs.
"Theodore, I'm sorry. You're in this state because you saved me."
"It's all my fault. I wasn't careful enough when I went out-that's why Savannah managed to kidnap me."
"I was too careless."
Theodore had lost so much blood that his mind gradually emptied, his body growing weak and drained, his vision beginning to blur.
Yet he still managed to gently squeeze Sigourney’s hand in reassurance.
“It’s okay. How could I ever blame you?”
“Luckily, I got there in time, was able to save you and take the stab for you.”
If not, with Sigourney’s frail and delicate body, how could she possibly have endured it?
Theodore thought silently.
Sigourney was about to say something more, but just then, the car reached the hospital.
Because the female officer had called ahead and explained the situation,
as soon as the car door opened,
doctors and nurses rushed over,
first carefully and professionally working to stop Theodore’s bleeding,
then, placing him on a stretcher and swiftly pushing it forward.
Sigourney wiped away her tears and ran after them, all the way to the emergency room door.
The moment those doors shut—
It was the moment Sigourney nearly collapsed.
Chapter 25: Can you help me take a bath
Every passing second felt like torment to Sigourney.
She stared at the closed doors of the emergency room, feeling a kind of anxious unrest for the first time.
"Who is the family of the patient named Theodore?"
When the doctor stepped out, Sigourney quickly rushed over to hear the update.
Fortunately, because they had arrived at the hospital in time, Theodore's injury was not life-threatening.
"However, the stab wound is quite deep. He'll need to stay in the hospital for at least a week to rest and recover. After that, we'll assess his condition before deciding when he can be discharged,"
The male doctor explained gently.
"One more thing-during this time, please pay particular attention to..."
Sigourney listened carefully and remembered everything clearly, thanking the doctor repeatedly.
Only now did the weight on her heart finally begin to lift.
Theodore was then taken to a VIP room in the hospital.
Perhaps because he had lost too much blood earlier-or simply from exhaustion-he had fallen into a deep sleep.
Sigourney gently tucked the blanket around him, then stepped out to handle the remaining important matters.
...
When Theodore awoke from his fatigue,
he moved his arm slightly
and suddenly noticed someone leaning against his bed, fast asleep.
Drowsily, he forced himself to sit up, the movement sending a sharp pain through his abdomen, and his voice came out hoarse.
"Sigourney?"
Sigourney was a light sleeper, so the moment she heard Theodore's voice, she blinked awake.
She quickly grabbed a pillow and placed it behind his back to help him sit more comfortably, then asked:
"You're awake? How do you feel?"
"Are you in pain anywhere?"
The sudden concern caught Theodore off guard. He blinked, coughed lightly, and replied,
"I'm fine now. Just a small wound-nothing serious."
"I feel better already."
Just thinking about Theodore's wound was enough to make Sigourney's eyes turn red.
She pressed her lips together, ladling a bowl of chicken soup from the thermal container, and spoke to Theodore with care.
"Have some chicken soup to nourish yourself. I asked Aunt Miller to cook and bring it here-it's very nutritious."
Instinctively, Theodore reached out for the bowl when he saw that Sigourney seemed intent on feeding him.
But Sigourney quickly held his hand down.
"It's okay. You're not in a good condition-let me feed you."
Theodore lowered his head, his gaze falling on their hands clasped together.
"..."
Suddenly, Sigourney felt an inexplicable embarrassment. She pulled her hand back hurriedly and stammered,
"Sorry... but let me feed you, okay?"
This time, Theodore no longer objected.
He let Sigourney feed him spoonful by spoonful of chicken soup-
and even felt somewhat indulged.
Since Theodore was injured and unable to move about freely,
naturally, he couldn't go to the company.
That evening, his assistant brought his laptop and iPad to the hospital so he could handle work from bed.
Only when the assistant left did Sigourney realize another important issue.
Now that his assistant had gone...
what about Theodore's bathing?
"..."
While Sigourney was silently pondering this, Theodore stretched slightly and said slowly, with a hint of embarrassment:
"I hate to trouble you, but... I want to take a bath.
The doctor said I should avoid getting the wound wet,
and I can't bend down to wash myself properly."
"So can you help me?"
The moment that had to come finally arrived.
Sigourney, her face flushed red, agreed-
completely unaware of the faint smile curving at the corner of Theodore's lips
as he saw her soft face turning crimson.
Inside the bathroom,
since Theodore was unable to move well,
it was, of course,
Sigourney, who would help him undress.
Taking off his shirt was still manageable.
But when it came to removing his pants,
Sigourney's face turned as red as a ripe tomato.
She could only feel an overwhelming urge to flee.
"What's wrong, Sigourney?"
Theodore asked gently, seeing her frozen like a statue, not moving an inch.
He lowered his head, pressing his lips together pitifully.
“You’re uncomfortable doing this, aren’t you?”
“Then just let me do it myself. It’ll hurt a little when I move, but it’s fine. I can handle it.”
Theodore spoke slowly, his voice distant yet tinged with a sense of grievance.
Sigourney shut her eyes tightly, then finally made up her mind.
“It’s okay, let me help you.”
“You got hurt because of me anyway. I have to take responsibility.”
She gently squeezed his hand, then slowly—
unbuttoned Theodore’s trousers,
slowly—
pulled them down.
She didn’t dare look directly, her nerves making her mouth dry and tongue heavy.
But clearly, it wasn’t over yet.
She still had to grit her teeth and remove Theodore’s underwear.
All in overwhelming embarrassment.
After all, this was the first time she’d ever been this physically close to a man,
in such a bare and intimate way.
She tried to avoid looking directly at Theodore, slowly wetting the towel and beginning to wipe his upper body clean.
But afraid of accidentally touching his injuries, she peeked through partially closed eyes.
And what she saw—
was a well-defined chest and a taut six-pack,
so alluring that she instinctively swallowed.
“…”
She unconsciously lowered her gaze—only to be met with Theodore’s firm lower body,
and his generously sized manhood,
leaving her so flustered she just wanted to flee.
“…”
After finally managing to bathe Theodore,
Sigourney was drenched in sweat from the tension.
Her cheeks were flushed deep red, the color spreading across her delicate features,
making her look even more innocent—and unintentionally seductive.
Theodore looked at her, unconsciously licking his lips as Sigourney carefully helped him get dressed.
“All done. Let me help you outside.”
Sigourney let out a soft sigh of relief, gently guiding Theodore out of the bathroom, step by step, and helping him sit down on the bed. Then, she handed him the box of pre-cut fruit Miller had prepared.
“Stay here and have some fruit. I’m going to take a shower.”
Earlier, while bathing Theodore, some water had splashed onto her. Her clothes were slightly damp, clinging to her soft and delicate frame—something that made Theodore quickly avert his gaze.
He accepted the box of fruit awkwardly, nodded, then looked away.
Unaware of his reaction, Sigourney quickly grabbed a change of clothes
and headed into the bathroom,
shutting the door behind her with a firm click.
She undressed and placed her clothes neatly into the laundry basket,
but as she moved, she caught the lingering scent of Theodore’s masculine body wash from earlier.
The memory of that awkward moment resurfaced in her mind, flustering her all over again—
so much so that she misstepped.
A sharp cry of pain echoed, followed by the loud sound of something crashing onto the floor,
causing Theodore to grit his teeth, suppress his pain, and rush toward the bathroom.
“Sigourney? Are you okay?”
In her panic, Sigourney had forgotten to lock the bathroom door,
so out of pure concern, Theodore pushed it open and stepped inside.
And what he saw—
was Sigourney sprawled on the bathroom floor, surrounded by fallen bottles of shampoo and body wash.
She was completely naked, her full, curvaceous figure exposed,
her pale, porcelain skin almost blindingly radiant.
Theodore coughed awkwardly and quickly turned his eyes away, stammering.
“Sorry. I was just worried, so I came in without thinking.”
“Are you okay? Do you need me to help you up?”
Sigourney was silent for a few seconds,
wishing more than anything that she could erase this moment from Theodore’s memory.
She struggled to her feet, managing a soft laugh.
“It’s fine. I can get up by myself. Can you… Step out for a moment?”
Her voice was still gentle, still soothing,
causing Theodore’s Adam’s apple to bob unconsciously.
He muttered a quick reply, then retreated from the bathroom in a fluster.
After just a few unexpected incidents that evening,
neither of them could meet the other’s eyes without blushing.
Chapter 26: Theodore, can I hug you?
The next morning,
Aunt Miller arrived early with a nourishing breakfast for both of them.
They ate in silence, without exchanging a single word,
leaving even Miller somewhat stunned.
Weren't their relationship supposed to be rather close lately?
How did it turn into this?
After breakfast, a doctor came in to change the dressing on Theodore's wound.
Sigourney stayed beside him, and the moment she saw the deep gash on his body,
her eyes suddenly turned red at the corners.
Even though Theodore had always reassured her that it was nothing-
just a minor injury, just superficial-
the truth was clearly otherwise.
A sudden urge to embrace him welled up inside her.
And once the doctor left,
Sigourney actually asked.
"Theodore, can I hug you?"
"Just once. If you're uncomfortable with it, then it's fine."
She blinked, eyes fixed on his abdomen, unable to look away.
Perhaps Theodore could sense the turbulent emotions stirring within her,
because he gently replied with a soft "Okay,"
then opened his arms toward her.
The warm embrace carried the soft, sweet scent of lavender from Sigourney's body,
wrapping Theodore in a kind of warmth he had never known.
The corners of Sigourney's eyes turned red. She sniffled, her voice slightly hoarse.
"Thank you for everything."
"And... I'm sorry, Theodore."
...
Per the doctor's instructions,
Theodore stayed in the hospital for a full week.
Finally, once his condition had noticeably improved,
he was discharged.
As a textbook workaholic, Theodore returned to the company the very next day,
diving back into the unfinished work that had piled up.
And Sigourney, too,
returned to her job.
Somehow, Richard had gotten wind of this-
because early that very morning, he called Sigourney,
asking if she had any free time.
He wanted to visit her corporation
to discuss the terms of the potential collaboration they'd spoken of the other day.
Sigourney scheduled the meeting for the afternoon.
Richard readily agreed,
even promising her a surprise.
Sigourney didn't think much of it.
But those who don't suspect anything-
are always the ones who end up surprised.
That very afternoon,
Richard's arrival at her company
was nothing short of grand.
He stepped out of a sleek black Porsche Panamera-the latest model to hit the market-
dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit,
sporting a pair of stylish dark sunglasses,
radiating nothing short of ostentatious flair.
And most eye-catching of all-
undeniably-
was the vibrant bouquet of red roses in his hand.
His arrival,
unsurprisingly,
immediately drew the attention of everyone in the company.
When Sigourney caught wind of the commotion, she could only sigh, her head throbbing.
As Richard entered the room, she narrowed her eyes, her voice lazy and indifferent.
"If you came to my company just to cause trouble, then leave."
"I'm only talk business."
Richard lowered his sunglasses, flashing a smile he clearly believed to be dazzling,
and held out the bouquet toward Sigourney.
"Don't be so tense, Sigourney," he said.
"I just thought, as a future business partner, it's only right to bring a small gift when meeting a female counterpart."
"Red roses suit your aura perfectly."
To Sigourney, it was nothing but an annoyance. She clicked her tongue.
"Richard, I'm not joking."
"I'm not accepting this bouquet. Do whatever you want with it."
Not wanting to engage further, she crossed her arms and stared at him, making no move to take the flowers.
Richard shrugged and casually set them on the desk.
"Alright. I'll toss them in the trash later, then."
He showed no trace of disappointment or offense, still smiling as if nothing had happened.
"Now, can we talk about the partnership between us? I'm being serious now."
At that, Sigourney was finally satisfied, saying no more.
Richard, at last, adopted a serious tone and discussed the upcoming collaboration with her.
Sigourney found his proposals acceptable, and the meeting proceeded smoothly.
Once their discussion ended and Richard prepared to leave, he gave her a light smile,
his tone was still relaxed and laced with his usual teasing manner.
"Hey, we're partners now, aren't we? You're just going to let me leave like this?"
"Shouldn't you at least escort me to the lobby out of basic courtesy?"
Sigourney, though not particularly eager to oblige, shrugged in resignation.
"Alright, I'll walk you out."
Richard curled his lips into a smug grin.
They stepped into the executive elevator reserved for the company's senior leaders. Sigourney, swift as lightning, immediately pressed the button for the ground floor.
Her speed made Richard chuckle, amused.
"In a hurry, huh? Trying to get rid of me that fast?"
Sigourney shot him a lazy glance.
"Talk less. Save your energy for something more meaningful."
Richard, all the more eager to tease her, was just about to say something-
when the elevator suddenly lurched,
forcing both of them to grab onto the side rails to stay upright.
Before they could even process what had happened,
the lights inside the elevator flickered-
then went out completely,
plunging everything into darkness.
And then the elevator came to a halt,
the doors remained tightly shut.
"..."
The atmosphere instantly turned eerily silent.
Both of them were stunned, caught off guard.
"Wait... don't tell me we're stuck?"
Richard's voice trembled slightly with unease.
He fumbled to press the emergency alarm button, trying to signal for help,
then attempted to pry open the doors manually-
to no avail.
The sudden breakdown of the elevator sent a flicker of panic through Sigourney as well.
Instinctively, she reached for her phone, intending to call Venus for assistance-
but as expected,
there was no signal.
She blinked in quiet despair.
"Well, looks like I won't be seeing you off after all."
"We're both stuck here now."
Sigourney pressed her lips together as she spoke, then suddenly realized—
from the very beginning,
Richard had been unusually silent, not teasing her as he usually did.
“Richard? Are you okay?”
Sigourney called out uncertainly.
She suddenly felt the hem of her shirt being tightly gripped by Richard,
followed by his faint, somewhat fearful voice.
“Pardon me, but let me hold on for a bit.”
Richard wasn’t joking. His voice was soft and low.
“I have night blindness… and I’m afraid of tight spaces too.”
“I’m just holding onto your shirt a little. I won’t bother you.”
Hearing Richard’s voice,
Sigourney wanted to turn on the flashlight on her phone to help him feel less scared.
But what she didn’t expect was—
her phone ran out of battery the moment the light turned on.
The faint glow flickered briefly, then went out completely.
Sigourney sat down next to Richard.
This time, she didn’t push him away, but instead moved a little closer and said gently:
“Where is your phone? Turn on the flashlight. The light will make it less scary.”
Richard sighed and answered in despair:
“I left my phone in the car. Earlier, when I got out, I was too focused on holding the roses I brought for you, so I forgot.”
He let out another sigh.
“I thought we’d just talk for a bit and then head down, nothing serious.”
“So I didn’t tell my assistant to bring my phone up.”
“And now, look what happened.”
Sigourney also sighed.
That meant they had to stay together
in the darkness and cramped space
until the building’s security realized the elevator was stuck
and came to rescue them.
Perhaps due to overwhelming fear, Richard was sweating cold, his vision growing blurry.
He blinked and gritted his teeth, trying to remain calm,
trying to maintain his composure in front of Sigourney.
Every so often, he trembled slightly, eyes tightly shut,
struggling to regulate his breathing, all in vain.
“Sigourney, can you say something?”
Richard’s voice carried a hint of despair.
“Anything at all, just so I don’t feel alone.”
He was almost pleading.
Sigourney noticed that Richard’s condition was abnormal—
his fear wasn’t an act.
So she gently comforted him.
“Then… I’ll tell you a fairy tale.”
Richard managed a weak reply,
and so,
for the rest of the time,
Sigourney told him a fairy tale
she had memorized it by heart since childhood.
Chapter 27:
Don't you want to reconsider leaving Theodore to be with me?
At that moment,
Sigourney's voice was nothing short of salvation to Richard.
He clung to her tightly, gripping her clothes so hard his arms turned pale from the strain, pain shooting through him-yet he had no intention of letting go.
He even wished this moment could last forever.
Time passed-who knew how long.
Then suddenly, the door burst open, blinding light flooded the cramped space,
causing both Sigourney and Richard to instinctively squint.
Sigourney reacted even faster,
swiftly standing up and putting some distance between herself and Richard the moment she realized they were safe.
"Director, are you okay?"
"Sorry, it took so long to find you."
As the elevator doors finally opened normally, Venus hurried in, quickly explaining the situation. Sigourney, of course, understood this was merely an accident, not Venus's fault, so she gently reassured her that everything was fine.
Besides, it was thanks to Venus noticing her disappearance that the security team had been called in time to handle the situation.
Only then did Venus turn her gaze gently toward Richard, her voice soft.
"Mr. Lancaster, are you okay? Would you like me to take you to the hospital?"
Truthfully, Richard's current condition could only be described as miserable.
He was sitting in a corner of the elevator, clutching his head, his face ghostly pale and void of expression.
At the sound of Venus's voice, Richard finally sat up from the elevator floor, forcing a smile.
"I'm fine. The elevator just shook a bit earlier, and I tripped, that's all."
"I'm okay now."
Venus gave a slight nod to show she understood, asking no further questions.
Sigourney also knew Richard didn't want this personal matter exposed, so she turned, ready to leave.
However, she suddenly heard Richard's familiar voice.
"Hey, Sigourney. Wait a minute."
Sigourney blinked, dazed, thinking Richard had something serious to say, and turned around.
But all she saw was Richard, back to his usual relaxed, nonchalant self, winking.
"Hey, don't you want to reconsider leaving Theodore to be with me?"
There weren't just a few company staff nearby-Venus was there, along with several members of the building's security team-
but Richard openly confessed without a hint of restraint.
"I really don't mind that you're already married. Anytime you change your mind, the position of Mrs. Lancaster is yours."
Sigourney shot Richard a disgusted glance, cold and sharp.
"Shut up."
She walked away without another word.
But that icy demeanor-so starkly different from her gentle patience just moments ago-
only made Richard feel even more drawn to her.
...
That evening,
to steady his emotions,
Richard made his way to a large bar near his home, drinking alone.
The bartender, well aware by now that Richard was a regular, noticed his somber mood and said nothing-simply poured the liquor in silence.
Richard stared into the swirling liquid in his glass, a faint smile curling on his lips at the thought of Sigourney.
His eyes narrowed, lost in the current of his own thoughts,
when suddenly,
a woman slid into the seat next to him, striking up a conversation.
"Mr. Lancaster, care to collaborate?"
The abrupt, cryptic question made Richard frown.
He instinctively looked up, about to dismiss whoever it was-
only to freeze for a second at the sight of that bitter, spiteful face.
"Savannah? What are you doing here?"
His voice dripped with disdain.
"Did Theodore not throw you in jail yet for the stupid mess you caused?"
Richard didn't bother holding back his mockery.
He knew exactly what Savannah had done to Sigourney-and had no intention of treating her with even a shred of civility.
Savannah merely curled her lips and narrowed her eyes at him.
"That's none of your concern. Just answer the question."
"Are you interested in working together or not?"
While Richard quietly nursed his drink, Savannah launched into a lengthy pitch.
If Richard would agree to help her take down Theodore's company-
and clear the way for her to end up with him-
then, in return, she claimed she could help Richard win Sigourney over.
"So? Interested, Mr. Lancaster?"
Savannah sat back with her arms crossed, chin lifted in smug satisfaction.
But to her dismay, Richard merely shot her a sharp, disinterested glare.
"No. I've got zero interest in working with someone who once tried to hurt Sigourney."
"And while I'm still being polite-get lost."
Richard didn't hesitate to dismiss her, instructing the bartender to pour him another drink before tilting his head back and downing it in one go.
Savannah stomped her foot in frustration at his indifferent attitude, shrieking,
"You idiot! What are you acting so high and mighty for?"
Savannah roared,
"Don't you like Sigourney so damn much? Are you really going to just sit there and watch her live happily ever after with Theodore?"
"Where's that determination you had to go after her? Coward!"
Her relentless barrage of insults, filled with every vile word imaginable, unexpectedly caught Richard's attention.
Though he appeared unaffected, casually drinking his liquor,
the hand holding his glass tightened slightly at her words.
"And another thing-I swear, this plan won't hurt Sigourney at all."
"If you keep hesitating, I'll find someone else to work with."
Savannah threatened.
"And when that time comes, when you see Sigourney fall into someone else's arms again,
don't blame me for not offering you this chance."
"Bastard."
Savannah made a show of turning to leave-
and just as she had predicted,
Richard finally responded, his voice slow.
"Wait."
"Tell me about your plan first."
The corner of Savannah's lips curled into a triumphant smile.
...
The next day,
Sigourney lazily stretched and carefully asked Venus about the progress of the charity project sponsored by the Nichols family.
“Everything is going very well, boss. After receiving your orders, nearly two hundred charity houses have been built to provide shelter for the poor and homeless in Z City. Precisely, 243 charity houses, all distributed to impoverished families on the outskirts of the city, each verified as underprivileged by local authorities.”
“Moreover, over twenty thousand students have gained access to educational scholarships provided by the Nichols family and have continued their studies. Their academic performance is very promising—it seems we’ve given the opportunity to the right people...”
As one of the prominent families in the country, the Nichols family placed great importance on philanthropy, launching a major charity project every year. This time, with the responsibility handed to Sigourney, she had made every effort to organize things as smoothly as possible.
“Very good, Venus. I don’t have any more tasks left for today, do I?”
Sigourney reviewed the report Venus had given her, then returned it with a satisfied expression. Venus nodded slowly.
“That’s right, boss. All the tasks for today have been handled—you’re free to leave now.”
Sigourney covered her mouth in a soft yawn, braced herself on the desk as she stood, and smiled gently at Venus.
“Alright. You’ve worked hard, too, Venus.”
“You can head home as well.”
Venus nodded respectfully, and the two of them left work together.
That evening, Sigourney didn’t have any free time either, as she was scheduled to attend an auction gala with Theodore—her day remained fully booked.
By the time she drove home, she found Theodore already lounging comfortably on the sofa, watching the financial news.
“You’re home early? How’s your health today?”
After several days of recovery, Theodore’s injury had improved considerably. He only needed to apply ointment regularly, as instructed by the doctor, to prevent scarring.
Sensing Sigourney’s presence, Theodore turned his head to look at her and smiled with a gentle curve of his lips.
“I’m doing fine. Thank you for your concern.”
Their relationship had become noticeably more relaxed and intimate after Theodore had risked himself to save Sigourney.
At the very least, they could now enjoy each other’s company and converse with ease.
Sigourney asked after his condition with a few more questions, then told him to wait a moment—
she needed to head upstairs to shower and get ready before accompanying him to the auction.
Theodore merely nodded, telling her there was no need to rush,
then continued watching the financial news as he waited for her.
Chapter 28: The auction event
Sigourney didn't keep Theodore waiting for long.
She quickly showered, applied a light touch of makeup,
and descended the stairs in an elegant off-shoulder dress.
The soft fabric of her gown fluttered lightly in the air, making her appear all the more graceful and delicate, just as captivating to Theodore as ever.
By then, Theodore had also changed into a gray suit, the sharp cut further enhancing his composed and masculine appearance.
He glanced at Sigourney, cleared his throat in feigned calm, and said,
"Are you ready? Let's go."
Sigourney nodded and followed him to the auction event.
Naturally, the evening auction was attended by numerous billionaires and successful CEOs from both within the country and abroad.
They mingled, exchanged words, assessed each other's corporate potential, and weighed the prospects of future collaborations.
Sigourney was long accustomed to settings like these,
so she stood gracefully beside Theodore, composed and poised, gently greeting the people they met.
When the event officially began, they entered the hall and took their seats in the front rows.
"If you see anything you like, feel free to bid. I'll get it for you."
Theodore cast a glance over the items being auctioned that night, many of which were rare and exceptionally valuable pieces of women's jewelry.
He figured Sigourney might take a liking to them.
Sigourney gave a casual nod, but didn't pay much attention.
She had already looked over the catalog and found nothing particularly impressive.
Still, she placed bids on a few items during the auction,
As the purpose of the event was to raise funds for charity, supporting impoverished households in the southern part of their city.
Sigourney wanted to contribute in her own way.
Afterward, she covered her mouth and let out a lazy yawn-
clearly, quite some time had passed.
"Tired? Should I take you home early?"
Theodore leaned in slightly, noticing the weariness on her face, and asked with concern.
He, too, had successfully bid on a few items and made his charitable donations.
It could be said that she had already fulfilled her purpose in attending the auction today.
"No worries? They about to auction off a few more rare and exclusive pieces that weren't listed in the catalog."
"I'll stay a bit longer to watch."
Sigourney replied nonchalantly, and Theodore, shrugging in indulgence, said nothing more.
"And now, presenting the most valuable piece of jewelry in tonight's auction.
The starting bid is two hundred million dollars-let the bidding begin!"
The MC's excited voice rang out, immediately capturing everyone's attention.
After all, such a high starting price naturally sparked curiosity-
what kind of item could be so breathtakingly beautiful to warrant such a sum?
Sigourney also looked toward the stage in surprise.
Indeed, the MC's excitement was justified.
It was a diamond necklace, its design both luxurious and refined-
crafted in the unmistakable style of old money elegance.
Exquisite, yet not ostentatious.
Each diamond was flawlessly cut, gleaming brilliantly under the lights without a single blemish.
At the center of the necklace rested a majestic imperial jadeite-
its signature deep green hue radiantly clear, untouched by even the slightest impurity.
This centerpiece made the necklace all the more precious.
Gasps of admiration echoed throughout the room as the crowd fell in love with the piece,
quickly driving the bidding up to $500 million.
Sigourney gazed intently at the necklace, her eyes betraying a clear fondness.
She picked up the bidding paddle beside her, about to join in-
when Theodore, ever perceptive, leaned in and asked softly,
"You like it? Do you want it?"
Theodore carefully studied Sigourney's expression and noticed how her eyes sparkled, fixated on the necklace, nodding slightly to show how much she liked it.
He leaned closer to Sigourney and whispered,
"Then let me buy it for you. Wait for me."
His voice was slightly hoarse, unusually deep and warm, causing Sigourney to feel an involuntary flutter. She cleared her throat, pretending to stay calm as she watched Theodore place a bid of six hundred million dollars.
But clearly, it didn't stop there.
Someone sitting not far from them,
who until now hadn't shown much interest in the auction,
suddenly, he gripped his paddle tightly and called out a bid of seven hundred million dollars.
His voice carried its usual lazy, mocking tone-
and after bidding, he even glanced toward Sigourney,
winking smugly.
Sigourney shot a glare at Richard.
How annoying.
He always had to ruin everything.
Theodore ignored Richard and calmly raised the bid to eight hundred million,
but unsurprisingly, the others continued to compete, determined to win the necklace.
In the end, when Theodore offered a bid of one billion dollars,
Richard casually doubled it.
"Two billion dollars."
Gasps of disbelief rippled through the crowd.
After all, the gap between bids had become enormous, far too much for a necklace.
No matter how rare or beautiful it was, one billion dollars had already been excessive.
"Two billion dollars, going once."
The sound of the gavel echoed, but Theodore didn't back down.
He had noticed Richard by now and casually raised his paddle again.
"Two billion, one hundred million."
Richard, unfazed, immediately offered,
"Three billion dollars."
"That's enough, I don't want it anymore, Theodore."
"Don't go on. That price is too high for a necklace-
I don't think it's worth it."
Just as Theodore was about to raise the bid again,
Sigourney gently tugged at his sleeve, signaling him to stop.
Though Theodore was wealthy and willing to buy it for her,
this was simply too extravagant.
Money wasn't water to be spent so recklessly.
Theodore, seeing how rare it was for Sigourney to take such a liking to something, smiled gently to reassure her and intended to continue bidding. But after a few attempts, each one was stopped by Sigourney.
At that moment, the third strike of the gavel echoed through the room-
the item had been sold to Richard for three billion dollars.
Sigourney no longer paid it any mind.
She wasn't interested in the following items, and neither was Theodore.
So, once the auction concluded, she linked her arm with Theodore's and left the hall.
They stepped out into the hotel lobby to complete the formalities and receive the items they had successfully won.
Both Theodore and Sigourney were alike in this-
they simply let Theodore's assistant nearby handle the payments by card and gifted the items to him.
There were some valuable antiques among them,
which could fetch a considerable sum if resold,
so Theodore's assistant was all smiles, repeatedly thanking them.
Just as they were about to leave, a voice called out behind them.
"Sigourney, hey, wait a second."
Hearing Richard's voice, Sigourney instinctively frowned,
already certain that whatever it was, it wouldn't be pleasant.
But since there were many people around,
she still turned back out of courtesy, responding with little enthusiasm.
"What's wrong?"
Sigourney's lack of enthusiasm didn't dampen Richard's mood in the slightest.
He still carefully held out a large velvet box to her, wrapped with exquisite precision.
"This is for you," he said.
Sigourney didn't take it-she only eyed Richard warily, suspicion plain in her gaze.
Richard shrugged, offering a helpless explanation.
"Earlier, I noticed from afar that you seemed to like that diamond necklace,
so I bid for it as a gift for you."
His gaze toward Sigourney was especially gentle,
completely unconcerned with the expression on Theodore's face beside her.
He even flirted with Sigourney outright.
"I think this is what it really looks like when someone's serious about pursuing a woman."
"As for some others..."
Richard cast a sidelong glance at Theodore, open hostility written all over his face.
"Can't even bring himself to buy a necklace, just worth a few billion dollars for his wife-
what a cold man..."
"The feelings he gives you... if you're not careful, they might turn out to be nothing but superficial,"
Richard sneered.
Richard’s words were blunt, showing no restraint, and they made Theodore’s expression darken.
He clenched his hand tightly, wrapping his arm around Sigourney’s waist—a silent warning to Richard for his insolent tone.
Just as Theodore was about to respond, Sigourney gently took his hand, calming him with a soft touch.
Then, with composed eyes, she looked straight at Richard.
