Chapter 39
“Take the child and k*ll it, a woman like her does not deserve to bear a child and worst be a mother,” one of them said, and immediately my baby was snatched from me.
I shouted, screaming and begging for mercy as they tossed my child on the floor.
They held my hands and legs down on the ground making me unable to move.
I watched her—she carried a huge r*ck, kicking my baby to her feet.
Raising her hands holding the r*ck up, she slammed it down on my baby
My baby’s piercing cry of pain, along with mine echoed, as I jolted awake.
“It’s okay, Leah. It’s okay, it’s just a dream,” I heard Xavier's voice come through the darkness.
“My…my baby. Xavier, they…they… took my baby, they are going to k*ll him,” I stammered through my words, my entire body trembling from fear.
“I’m sorry Leah,” he said softly.
“No…no…no you don’t understand. They took my baby Xavier, she took him. I saw her.
She wants to k*ll him.
Please save my child, Xavier.
I’m your friend right, for the sake of our relationship these past years, please save my child I’m begging of you.
I’ll do anything, anything you want, but I just want my child back.
He is in danger, why are you not saying anything,” I shouted in anger and pain.
I could not see his face, but I could feel his arms holding me tightly as he pressed me to his chest.
“Okay Leah, I’ll save your child I promise,” he said, sounding helpless and that made the sound of my sobbing louder.
“Come on, move for me. You need to go back to sleep,” he said calmly, laying me back in the hospital bed as he moved to leave.
I could not see his face because of the darkness, but I could feel him.
“Please don’t leave,” I said hurriedly, holding his hands tightly in mine.
“You have to get some rest, Leah,” he said again, trying to pry my hands gently.
“Please stay with me. I don’t want to sleep alone,” I said, my voice trembling with fear and it shook with every word I uttered.
I was scared to go back to sleep. I was scared to see their faces again. The nightmares.
“Okay,” he said softly. I moved sideways on the hospital bed, creating enough space for him.
He joined me on the bed, trying to keep his distance till I wrapped my hands around his waist, burying my face in his chest, and I cried once more, till I fell asleep with his hands wrapped tightly around me.
The sound of the door opening along with the voices brought me out of my dreamless slumber.
“Ethan, you need to calm down.
I am so sure Leah must be okay,” Jennifer’s whining voice blared through my ears, and I felt Xavier groan on the bed, his hands tightening around my body.
“Oh my God. It looks like we disturbed them.
I told you Leah must be doing well,” Jennifer said, the sound of her voice grating on my nerves.
As everything that happened a day before came crashing on me.
The ways he mocked me when I begged for help.
“What the f**k?” Xavier cursed besides me, he shifted gently, his hands moving around me.
I watched as he struggled to block the light from reaching his eyes, and a scowl settled on his face when he looked past me, to the people standing in our hospital room.
“What are you doing here?” He asked through gritted teeth.
I turned, confused, only to be greeted with the sight of Ethan, a dark look on his face as he watched me, while Jennifer hung around him watching me with a smile.
“Oh we are so sorry to disturb your moment.
But Leah works for Ethan and I heard she was at the hospital from one of my friends who worked with her, so informed Ethan that we needed to check on her,” Jennifer said with a bright smile.
“But it seems all is good here.
After all she has you to take care of her,” she said, her voice silky and delicate as always.
“Why are you not at work?” Ethan asked coldly and my heart pounded loudly in my chest from the look on his face.
His expression was blank, not one twitching except from the clenching of his jaws while he watched me.
I opened my mouth to say something, only to be cut off by Xavier.
“As you can see, Leah is in the hospital,” Xavier replied rudely, cutting me off.
“Ethan, why would you ask her that?
Don't you see how pale she looks, she just underwent a surgery,” Jennifer said softly, putting off an act of scolding Ethan.
I watched Ethan’s eyes flare in concern as he looked at me.
Jennifer’s lips tipped up, as she watched me with a shrill smile.
“The doctor said that Leah just had an ab*rtion.”
Chapter 40
I watched as Ethan’s expression changed from concern to shock, then anger.
“She had an abortion?” he asked, whispering under his breath but loud enough for the whole room to hear.
“Well yes, you know I said my friend works at the hospital, she…”
“Just shut up Jennifer, what nonsense are you spilling out of your nasty mouth,” Xavier roared, his body vibrating with anger.
I watched as Jennifer flinched from fear, she shifted closer to Ethan, her thin arms wrapping around his waist as her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m so sorry Leah and Xavier.
Oh my! My mouth, I never meant to hurt you or expose your personal life that way,” she said, her voice cracking as tears streamed down her face.
Her expression appeared weak and frail as she held onto Ethan like her life depended on it.
Her crying seemed to snap Ethan out of his thoughts, because the moment his eyes landed on her tear-streaked face, his expression turned to steel.
“How dare you?” he asked coldly, his posture brimming with tension, as he drew Jennifer closer into his arms, consoling her softly.
It seemed there was still a fragment of my heart left, or maybe it was the need to be in his arms for once, and held tightly with care.
Because I could feel my soul shattering at the sight of his hands wrapped around her consoling her, while I sat on a hospital bed—crying my eyes out and mourning the loss of our unborn baby, but he still remained with her, treating her like a harmless porcelain doll she pretended to be.
She was all he could see even now, he chose to be blind to my pain.
“How dare I?” Xavier asked, his tone dripping with venom as he stared at Ethan like he had gone mad.
“Maybe you should tell your fiance to wash her mouth and not pry into other people’s personal business,” he said through gritted teeth, his eyes burning with rage.
“You…”
“No Ethan, it’s okay.
You don't need to fight for me all the time.
I spoke out of tone earlier.
Leah, I am so sorry, please forgive,” Jennifer said, falling to her knees before me, her body trembling from her sobs as she clasped her hands above her head.
My eyes widened at her action, and I wondered which game she was playing at now.
“Xavier is right, I spoke out of turn.
It is none of my business to reveal your personal life, because after all the child was yours and you had your reasons for k*lling it.
I understand not all women can handle being pregnant unexpectedly, but please let me speak my mind, Leah.
I know my words might hurt you, and I am so sorry for that, but I have to speak the truth.
It was not right of you to just take a life like that.
I understand maybe you hate children or you are not ready to be a mother, but still in my heart it felt wrong.
What would the father of the child think, knowing you killed his child in cold blood, maybe you should have given the child a chance, Leah.
It was still going to be a human after all,” She said, putting on the perfect, pitiful act that one can hardly find flaw in.
My mind flashed back to yesterday, when I begged and pleaded with her to help me, but she laughed at my face, cutting the call.
Maybe if I had not seen her true colors I would have fallen for her acts, but now I know she is nothing as you pretend to be.
“What nonsense are you spouting, Jennifer?
I would never be selfish like that to kill my own child so stop saying rubbish.
I was assaulted and attacked by a mob yesterday,” I said, my body trembling, as my hands went to wrap around my flat stomach and my features twisted in pain.
“I suffered a miscarriage and not an abortion.
I called Ethan yesterday, but you answered his phone.
I pleaded with you to help me or at least inform Ethan…I begged you to save me, but you laughed at my face and ended the call.
My child was k*lled, my…my baby was taken from me before I even knew he was there…” I stammered through my words, my voice shook as I held my hands to my mouth, a sob quaking through my entire body.
Ethan’s eyes widened at my words, his body going rigid as he looked at Jennifer, his eyes flashing with disbelief and shock.
