Chapter 34
‘I left something precious for you. It was my mother’s now it’s yours,’ those words echoed continuously in my mind.
My mind was clouded with thoughts as I walked aimlessly on the street.
“There she is, husband snatcher,” a voice yelled.
I turned to see a group of girls gathered at the corner looking at me with danger gleaming in their eyes.
“You think you could just seduce our angel's husband and sleep with him right? You evil woman,” the one in the middle said, stepping forward. Her voice drew the attention of onlookers.
I stood frozen in shock as I watched them.
“What are you talking about?” I asked in frustration, having enough on my plate already.
“Look! She is pretending to be innocent now,” one of them barked, a loud laugh bursting out of her throat.
“She seduced another woman’s fiance and made him sleep with her. Women like this should not exist.
They are destroying our society and teaching the wrong morals to our girls,” She spat, disgust evident in her tone.
By now, a crowd had already gathered around us, as the voices of their whispers grew louder, while they stared at me with disgust.
“Do I know you?
And what exactly do you mean seduce another woman’s FIANCE? I did nothing of such,” I replied in anger.
“So you’ll keep on lying huh?”
“Everyone, look, look right here.
This is her, seducing and sleeping with the heir of the Blackwood Industries, knowing very well she was already engaged to Jennifer Anderson.
Look right here, this is our proof,” one of them roared, and immediately Jennifer’s name was called, the crowd gasped.
She raised her phone in the air as she pressed play on a video.
My body recoiled in fear and shame when I saw the content of the video. It must have been taken last night.
It showed me fully n*ked while I rode Ethan’s c**k.
The sound of my m**ns echoed louder in the now quiet atmosphere.
“You see, this woman right here is a slut.
And the worst part.
She is already engaged to Xavier Kingsley, and she still openly sleeps with other men shamelessly,” one said, her tone spiteful with disgust.
“Women like this should be punished, before they can corrupt the society any longer,” a woman snarled, her jaws clenched and eyes locked right on me.
The danger in her eyes made me step back in fear, trying to form an escape plan in my mind.
“Yes we should punish.
That would sound as an example to the young girls in our society, that we don't condone immoral acts,” another said with a sneer.
Immediately, my body stood at alert, and I bolted, running for my life.
“Don’t let her escape,” a voice shouted.
I ran faster, my feet carried me as fast as they could.
My hands went to my bag, as I fumbled through my bag, struggling in search of my phone, while fear ate its way up my body.
I hid in a dark alley, behind a waste bin, as I pulled my phone out from my bag, calling the one person I could think of.
“Hello. Who is this?” Jennifer’s voice sounded immediately when the phone was answered, and my heart tore into pieces at the sound of her voice.
What was she possibly doing with Ethan’s phone, was he with her right now?
“It’s me, Leah.
I need to speak with Ethan right now please where is he?” I said hurriedly in a hushed voice, my tone shaking in fear when I heard footsteps coming towards where I hid.
I heard her laugh softly through the call. “What do
you mean you want to speak to my fiance?
Who the hell do you think you are?
And what illusion of relationships do you think you have with him?” She said darkly, finally dropping her white lotus act.
Chapter 35
“Please Jennifer, I don't have time for this, I am currently in grave danger. People are looking for me, they are going to…”
“Oh shut the hell up Leah.
And so what if you are in danger, deal with it yourself.
I see no reason why you should involve my future husband.
Ethan is currently still asleep in my bed, we had a long, wild night,” She said smugly. And immediately my phone beeped with a notification.
I opened it to see Jennifer had sent me a picture of Ethan shirtless on a bed, with a blanket around his waist.
He looked so peacefully asleep.
So he really spent the night.
That's why he never came back last night.
My heart trembled in pain—seeing the evidence clearly although I had already known made it hurt worse.
“There she is, drag her to me, we'll teach her a lesson, that’ll mark her for life,” a voice shouted. My body shook and the phone fell from my hands.
“Please, please Jennifer I beg you.
Inform Ethan, or please help me yourself, these people might kill me,” I pleaded through the call.
“Oh shut up Leah.
You can die if you want.
I can assure you that Ethan does not care whether you love or die,” She said darkly and immediately she cut the call.
I screamed in agony and fear when hands gathered around me, dragging me on the floor, my skin scraping and bruising in the process as they dragged me out of the alley.
The one I had identified as their leader stood at the side, her eyes gleaming dangerously, while a smirk settled on her lips.
I could hear the voices of the crowd cursing me, as they dragged me by my feet.
My body scraped the granite floor, and I gritted my teeth against the sting.
“Stop what the hell are you doing?” I screamed forcefully trying to release myself, but they were too much for me to fight off.
“Teaching a slut like you a lesson.
We were to leave a warning.
And I’ll say this once, never take what’s not yours,” the leader growled, grabbing a fist full of my hair tightly, as pain seared in my head.
“Come on! Let’s teach her a lesson, called dignity!” the leader roared ajd immediately they all were on me.
Pain shot through every part of my body.
Another stone smashed on my head and I groaned in agony, my body aching all over.
I curled my body on the floor, pain searing from all sides, as I tried in vain to shield myself from their attacks as best as I could do.
I could feel my body growing weak with every hit I took.
I looked down to see blood dripping from my thighs, as a hot stabbing pain flared from my stomach causing a scream to rip loudly from my throat
“She is bleeding from inside her legs.
What's wrong with her?” one of them said with trepidation.
“Who cares.
Maybe she was carrying a spawn from her immoral acts.
It’s good we’ll beat it out of her.
A woman like her should never have the opportunity of bringing a child into this world,” one of them snarled, her tone dripping with venom as she raised the plank, slamming it heavily on my abdomen, then against my head and I groaned in pain for one last time.
“What…what are you doing? Leah?
Stop this nonsense right now,” a masculine voice screamed.
My eyes searched for my savior and I managed a faint smile when I saw his face before my eyes closed slowly into a dreamless world.
Chapter 36
“It is good you brought her here on time, Mr Kingsley, you saved her life.
The beatings were severe, and definitely aimed to damage Miss Harnes.
I suggest you report the case to the station immediately.”
“Fortunately, we were able to make her stable.
Your fiancee suffered blunt trauma in her head and legs due to the assaults, four broken ribs and an incomplete ab….”
A masculine voice spoke and I struggled to open my eyes.
The blinding white lights were the first to greet me, making me flinch as I observed where I was.
The monitor beside me beeped steadily, and pain shot all over my body making me groan.
“Leah,” a soft velvety voice called.
I looked in the direction of it as a sad smile tipped up on my face.
There he stood—Xavier, his worried eyes on me, as the doctor who stood beside him walked towards me.
“How do you feel, Miss Harnes?” the doctor asked, making my eyes snap to his.
“What am I doing here?” I asked, my voice sounding cracked and sore startling me at the pain I felt.
“Miss Harnes you suffered an assault and your fiance saved you and brought you here right on time,” the doctor said.
The word ‘assault’ made me flinch as the memories of what happened slammed through me, eliciting a shiver of fear through me.
“You suffered severe trauma in some parts of your body, which have been duly taken care of.
And I’m sorry to say, but unfortunately we could not save your child,” the doctor said, landing the final blow.
My head made a ringing sound, blocking out all the noises.
I saw his lips move but I could not hear a word, as shock took total control over my body.
“Which child?” I asked in shock.
“Unfortunately Miss Harnes but your tests revealed that you were two weeks pregnant.
You suffered an incomplete abortion due to the trauma of the assault, and the child was still too small to hold on, and by the time your fiance brought you to the hospital, you had almost bled out.
Medications have been given to you to help expel the remaining contents from your uterus.
I am so sorry for your loss,” the doctor said sadly.
I laughed at his words, then paused, only to continue laughing, louder this time, until it turned into a full-blown sob.
“I…I was pregnant,” I whispered with tears trailing down my cheeks.
“Yes, you were.
But it’s not your fault for losing the child.
You were attacked, and the fetus could not have handled that much trauma.
And also pregnancy symptoms do not show until at least four weeks of conception.
So it makes sense that you were not aware of your condition,”
The pain came back this time in full force, shooting through all sides of my body, but it still felt less compared to the pain in my chest knowing I lost a child I barely had the chance to know.
The words of the women right before I passed out echoed in my mind.
“Who cares. Maybe she was carrying a spawn from her immoral acts. It’s good we’ll beat it out of her. A woman like her should never have the opportunity of bringing a child into this world.”
My heart clenched in pain as those words rang endlessly in my head. ‘A woman like her should never have the opportunity of bringing a child into this world,’ my chest felt choked up, a sob breaking through my mouth as those words rang again.
The pain felt stabbing, burning through my chest like a volcano making me unable to mutter even a word.
My body trembled all over, making a ragged sob shoot out of my mouth.
Strong hands wrapped around my shoulders as I shook uncontrollably in his hold.
Chapter 37
“I’m sorry, Leah. I’m so f**king sorry,” Xavier said as he held me tightly to his chest, kissing my hair softly, while muttering sorry continuously.
My mind barely recognized that I was being held by the same man that I had loved since childhood, the same man that broke my heart into pieces sleeping with my sister.
The very man that was currently working with my stepmother to destroy me.
I could barely think of all his misdeeds and shortcomings towards me.
All I needed now was comfort, and he was there to provide it for me.
I leaned into his hold, completely breaking down as I wailed for my little baby—the child I never got a chance to hold, and worst of all, I was never given the opportunity to watch it grow inside of me.
He held me tightly to his chest caressing my head while I cried.
My tears dampened his button-down shirt but he did not seem to mind because he tightened his hold around my waist, still muttering sorry.
I don’t know how long I stayed there for, or when my tears finally dried up until all that was left was a deep hollow void in my chest, from knowing I lost a child.
A void that I knew would never be filled again.
“Who was the father?” Xavier’s question sent tremors running down my chest.
My child’s supposedly father, that was the part I wanted to completely block out and not think about.
He must have felt the way his question made me grow rigid in his arms, and that made him curse.
“Shit! I’m sorry Leah, you understand if you don’t want to talk about it,” he said guilt laced in his tone.
“Why are you being so good to me Xavier?
I know you don’t love me one bit, so why are you being nice to me?” I asked, not caring how weak and pathetic I sounded. But I needed to know.
Why was he suddenly being good to me now when he had not been in the past.
“I know I’m not the best partner a woman can have, neither am I the most loving, honest or faithful. But you are still my friend, Leah.
You have been my best friend since I was old enough to speak, and I’ll never forget that,” he said, his voice not leaving any space for me to argue.
“Your actions confuse me.
One minute you are nice to me, then the next minute you behave like I mean nothing to you.
One minute you hate me enough to sleep with my sister, and the next you claim to love me enough to spend a fortune buying me a necklace,” I said, I probably sounded like a bitch right now for calling him out for cheating on me, while a few moments ago I was pregnant with a child that was definitely not his.
“So you know?” he asked, not bothering to deny my accusations.
“Yes. I saw you with her while you were going at it” I replied.
“I know it’s useless for me to say, but I’m sorry Leah. I’m d**n f**king sorry.
A lot was going on when Natasha and I got together.
I know it would probably sound like a bunch of excuses right now, and you probably are not going to believe me.
But just know that whatever I did Leah, I never meant to hurt you,” he said, a sigh breaking through his lips as he stared down at me with his dark grey eyes, eyes I used to love so deeply sometime ago, and now, I don’t even know how I feel anymore.
“But you did hurt me,” I said bitterly.
Chapter 38
“And I’m f**king sorry for that, Leah,” he said.
“Why? Why did you do it, Xavier?
I loved you so much, so why did you do it?
Why did you sleep with Natasha?” I asked, my vulnerability seeping through my tone.
And I felt shitter than ever.
I so badly wanted to put the blame on somebody, and it all fell to him.
If I had not caught him f**king Natasha that day, I would have never gone to that club where I met Ethan.
And then maybe—just maybe I would not feel as much pain as I felt right now.
“There are some things that are better kept hidden, Leah,” he said darkly.
His voice did not leave any room for further questioning.
“Why are you not judging me, Xavier?
I got pregnant, and I’m sure you know clearly it’s not yours, so why are you not judging me?” I asked brokenly.
“Because I don’t blame you, Leah.
I never deserved you anyway.
I had already soiled myself with Natasha, so I don’t blame you one bit,” he whispered dejectedly and tremors broke through my body again, as I sobbed in his arms all over again.
Mourning for my f**ked up life and mourning the loss of my baby, till my eyes closed and I fell into slumber.
“I told you to hide the child Gina, you know what they’ll do if they find her,” a male voice said in anger.
“We are safe here, Riles, I have told you several times,” I heard my mother say in agitation.
I peeped through the corridor, they did not know that I was there.
I always hid there, my small body passing through the tiny hole that led to our kitchen as I listened to their conversation barely understanding anything.
I looked at the man, my father.
Wait! Why does his face look different, my father was…
“Leah, baby, what are you doing here?
You are supposed to be in bed,” he said softly. He moved towards me, picking my small body up in his hands as I wrapped my hands around his neck.
“Dad?” I called softly in hesitation, and he smiled at me, placing a warm kiss on my forehead while my Mother watched us in adoration.
“It’s time for bed, my angel,” he said walking towards my princess bedroom in our small house.
I frowned in confusion, dad?
But he was not my dad, my father did not look like that, neither was his name Riles.
But yet it sounded so familiar.
I opened my mouth to say something, and the scene immediately changed, and I was big again.
“That’s her! Catch her,” their voices rang through the darkness.
I ran tirelessly, my body already feeling weak but I could not stop running.
I heard them calling from behind me, their footsteps sounding louder as they got closer and closer to me.
I felt something slam into my head from behind making me trip and fall as the loud wail of a child echoed through the night.
I looked at my hands to see a small tiny baby wrapped in a cloth—his loud wails growing louder with every passing second.
“My baby, my baby,” I murmured, tears streaming down my face, as I brought him closer to my chest.
“I knew you’ll never leave me,” I cried, kissing his forehead, and watched with a smile as he finally settled down in my arms.
“There she is, bring her here,” a feminine voice said distracting me, and I turned to see I have been surrounded by them.
The women.
They gathered around me, with planks and stones in their hands.
“Take the child and k*ll it, a woman like her does not deserve to bear a child and worse, be a mother,”
