In front of the entire pack, he raises a glass and says, “My only regret is not realizing she was my true mate. I’ve missed her for four whole years.”Hidden in the shadows of his celebration, my heart shatters all over again.
To them, I’m still a criminal. To him, I’m a ghost. And to someone out there, I’m a loose end that needs to be silenced for good. But this time, I won’t be the girl they destroy. This time, I’ll decide my own fate.
Chapter 1
I was grabbing my phone that had been buzzing for a long time now. My mood dropped on seeing the message. Nicolas hasn’t woken up yet. His condition and medical reports gave me hope that he would be fine.
I asked the doctor why he wasn’t awake yet, to which he chuckled at my puppy-love reaction.
“Are you alright, Ms. Viona?” The doctor’s concerned voice made me feel satisfied with myself.
“He had suffered from cancer for a long time. His body is trying to adjust. It will take a few days, but he will be fine.”
My mood immediately dropped, but the thought of us living together happily ever after, like in fairy tales, lifted my spirits again.
Opening my eyes, I was greeted by the doctor’s smiling face.
“The kidney transplant was a success.”
A bright smile unknowingly graced my lips as I turned to the person on the other bed beside me.
As usual, I wiped Nicolas’ body with a wet towel before feeding him his breakfast, though he hasn’t regained consciousness yet.
“Urgh!... damn, these stupid werewolf super hearing abilities,” I grunted through my teeth in frustration.
He was tortured by cancer for a long time. My mate, Nicolas, seeing him breathing perfectly without any discomfort made everything worth it—or so I thought.
But I still couldn’t wait to see Nicolas’ reaction when he found out I was the mysterious donor who gave her kidney without any payments. The thought made my head swell with pride.
Days later…
“Hello?”
“What is it?” My tone became cold as I spoke to the person on the other end of the line.
His response was swift.
“Two months ago.”
I felt like cold water was pouring over me.
I met my ex-best friend Joey at a café in the outskirts of the city. It had always been our usual hangout spot since we were in high school. But now, to me, it became the place where I lost my best friend.
He immediately called out to me from the corner of the café where we usually sat to talk during our school days.
“You wanted to talk?”
“You didn’t pick up my calls.”
I couldn’t blame him because I had rejected his calls multiple times.
“I have something really important to tell you. Please come meet me. I’ll be at the café.”
He stammered a little before going to the point.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“Wh—when did she return?”
“Flora is back from Chad.”
This caught me by surprise because she was not supposed to return for another three years.
I immediately turned down his offer to meet up like old times after he confessed his feelings towards me despite knowing my position in the pack and being my best friend.
“I’ll be leaving now. I have an appointment.”
With that said, I excused myself from his presence.
One afternoon, one of the kidnappers came to feed me after giving me a shot of sedative. I’m sure they were worried about where their Luna has been.
Suddenly, a bright light headed in my direction. My mind went numb for a few seconds before I realized I was knocked out by sedatives.
I woke up in what seemed to be an abandoned factory.
I was chained to a metal chair. The chains were cold, thick, and heavy. Being a werewolf, I was properly restrained.
I was treated like this for days, which turned into weeks, then months.
The kidnapper only came at noon to check on me and give me food and water—not enough to satisfy my hunger but enough for me not to die. Everything was planned.
Nicolas and I have been gone for quite a few months now. Should I call home?
I was given a shot of sedative every three hours.
The outskirts of the city were mostly quiet, with few cars and even fewer people. It is my favorite place to sort my thoughts.
When he was about to leave, I called his attention. Luckily for me, among the three kidnappers, he was the nicest, so I had a little more confidence in making my request.
“Please, may I see the paper?” My voice came as a whisper due to my fragile state.
He looked at me suspiciously.
“Just the front page, please,” I begged, almost sobbing.
I think he took pity on me and accidentally saw the newspaper in his hand, though it looked old.
The headlines attracted my attention.
“True love shines forth: CEO’s first love returns from abroad.”
Turning my attention, I saw boldly written on the front page:
“Young CEO Nicolas was diagnosed with cancer. After hospitalization, his wife Viona Nobel immediately donated her kidney to save his life.”
I was shocked beyond words and immediately regretted reading the news. Hot tears unknowingly fell from my eyes.
With my strength and anger, I pulled against the chains until they all snapped, freeing me. Blood dripped from my hands and legs due to months of restrictions.
My body ached severely. My bones were stiff, and my chest hurt badly despite the pain.
I was eager to tell Nicolas the truth—that I was the one who saved him, that I never left him, that I love him.
But my body didn’t listen.
I threw the newspaper to the floor in front of me before walking away.
I saw men in black and was tossed into a trunk. My vision went pitch black, and I passed out.
