Chapter 39
Thinking Lani would resume sitting down to watch TV, Kane was surprised when she suddenly turned, taking the initiative to kiss him on the lips—a rare occurrence. This kiss brought both happiness and surprise to Kane. He quickly responded, capturing Lani's lips to immerse themselves in the sweet moment.
Kane's kiss trailed down to Lani's neck and shoulders, causing the garment on her to slip off and fall to the floor. Lani clung to Kane's shoulders as he carried her to the bedroom, gently laying her on the bed.
"Lani, do you know how alluring you are tonight?"
Kane whispered in her ear, his voice warmer from the recent kiss. Lani blushed but didn't push Kane away, feeling shy yet not resisting his advances.
It was another sleepless night. By the time Kane finished, Lani was exhausted, leaning against him on his shoulder with little strength to move. Kane, as always, lifted Lani, helped her shower, dressed her in a silk nightgown, and then laid her on the bed. After covering her with a blanket, he retrieved his clothes and headed to the bathroom.
Lani remained as close to Kane as possible for the next two days whenever he was at home. Apart from her commitments to film shoots or game shows, all her time was dedicated to him. Despite this, it was still their first time being apart for a few days since they tied the knot, and Lani found it hard to cope with the separation.
"Can't you just pack me in your suitcase and take me on your business trip?" Lani looked at Kane with a pitiful expression, her eyes carrying a hint of longing as she saw Kane getting ready to leave for the airport. Kane put the shirt he was holding down and walked over to embrace Lani tightly.
"You're so adorable. How could I ever leave when you're like this?"
"I'm just going on a business trip, not leaving forever. Don't be so sad. I'll be back soon, sweetheart."
Every time he saw Lani feeling a bit down, Kane couldn't bear it. Seeing her now, slightly pouting, Kane genuinely felt a pang of heartache. Lani remained silent, just hugging Kane tightly, her lips quivering sadly. Kane lifted Lani, held her close, and gently stroked her back to comfort her.
"How about we stay up together tonight? That way, we can extend our time together."
Before Lani could fully grasp the meaning of Kane's words, he was lightning-fast, catching her hand behind her neck to prevent her from escaping and leaning down to kiss her.
It was another sleepless night. But unlike the previous night, when Kane had lifted Lani for a shower, she was completely limp on Kane's shoulder, unaware of anything.
Lani was so exhausted that even when Kane woke up the next day and prepared to leave for the airport, she still hadn't fully recovered. Her eyes remained closed, displaying the signs of fatigue. Kane couldn't bring himself to wake her, so he gently kissed her forehead before grabbing his suitcase and leaving.
Although Kane regretted not being able to say a proper goodbye to Lani, he didn't want to disturb her rest. After all, when he carried her to the shower the day before, she was so drained that she seemed barely responsive, letting him do whatever he wanted.
Upon reaching the airport, Kane saw Ryan waiting outside. As he approached, he noticed another girl standing beside Ryan. Although she had her back turned, her silhouette felt strangely familiar. While Kane was still hesitating, On the opposite side, Ryan saw him and quickly blinked, signaling Kane not to come closer.
That time, Kane recognized the girl standing next to Ryan as Aurora. He hurriedly pulled his suitcase forward to avoid her. Then, he messaged Ryan that he would proceed with the boarding procedures ahead of them.
Meanwhile, on this side, Aurora stood by Ryan, reminding him to eat regularly and dress warmly for the chilly weather in country L as they embarked on a business trip with his boss. Although the two had not officially become a couple, their relationship had grown closer. At least Ryan was no longer as aloof towards Aurora as he had been initially, so she deliberately bid him farewell before he left to surprise him.
"But hasn't your boss arrived yet? It's almost time for the flight to take off," Aurora inquired.
"I still want to see his face. I've seen his back, strikingly similar to your friend Lani's husband. I want to see if their faces resemble each other," Ryan responded.
They were practically the same. Fortunately, Aurora only saw his back; if she had seen his face, she might have uncovered the secret. Aurora didn't notice any stiffness in Ryan's expression or any sighs of relief, so she earnestly told him that the back of his boss and Lani's husband looked alike. She even mentioned that someday Ryan would meet Lani's husband. Ryan agreed, but he felt a rigid spine, secretly thinking that he had to appear both distant as if meeting Kane for the first time and surprised at how much he resembled his boss.
This demanded good acting skills, and indeed, it posed a challenge for Ryan.
When Ryan bid farewell to Aurora before boarding the plane, a sigh escaped him as if he had just unloaded a burden. Every time Aurora mentioned Lani's husband or his boss, he unconsciously tensed up, fearing that he might accidentally reveal something that would expose the truth.
Ten minutes later, Ryan settled into his seat near Kane on the plane. When Ryan greeted Kane, Kane merely nodded without further inquiry. Between them lay an unspoken understanding—if Ryan didn't say anything, everything was presumed to be okay.
Before the plane took off, Kane retrieved his phone from his pocket, deftly playing the role of a humble employee texting Lani.
"I've arrived at the airport and helped my boss with the luggage onto the plane. It's a bit tiring, but I'll do my best. After this business trip, if I perform well, I might get promoted, leading to a better life for us."
"The plane is about to take off, and once I land in country L, I'll message you. Just left for a bit, and I miss you a lot, sweetheart."
A direct elevation to the CEO and becoming the wealthiest billionaire in the city. However, Kane dared not mention this to Lani at the moment. The matters of the future could be talked about later.
As for Ryan, who happened to glance at the message his boss sent to his wife, was left in shock. Are the rich nowadays fond of pretending to be poor, even feigning such proficiency? Even a poor secretary like him had never messaged anyone in such a manner.
No wonder, after being together so long, Lani still hadn't uncovered Kane's true identity. Kane was exceptionally skilled at pretending.
When Kane and Ryan descended from the airport to the hotel, Kane messaged Lani, letting her know he had arrived safely and expressing how much he missed her. At this opportune moment, Lani had just awakened. The two exchanged affectionate phone calls for ten minutes before Kane left the hotel to meet with business partners.
During the two days of the business trip, Kane worked diligently to the point of forgetting the passage of time. He was so engrossed in his work that he completed three days' worth of tasks in just two. He was so busy that he didn't have time to message Lani, and their last messages remained when Kane arrived at the hotel and texted Lani to ensure her well-being.
On the last day, he dedicated the entire day to meeting with the ring designer for the engagement ring intended for Lani. He took the opportunity to make a few adjustments to make it look even more sparkling. Holding the small velvet box in his hand, Kane felt joy overflowing.
Finally, the day was approaching when he could tell Lani everything, and no longer feel uneasy whenever he was with her. This feeling of happiness painted the sky with a rosy hue, even as he looked up at the clouds.
However, there was an important thing that Kane was unaware of – Lani had already left.
After Kane had been away on his business trip for a day, in the afternoon, while Lani was at home watching TV, an uninvited guest arrived at their door. It was Kane's stepmother, Rachel.
As soon as she opened the door, Lani saw a woman wearing a long fur coat and a flowing dress, exuding an aura of extreme wealth. Despite being an actress, Lani wasn't so famous that she could be familiar to someone from such a high social class.
Rachel spotted Lani, smirked, and lowered the oversized sunglasses that partially obscured her face. Looking down at Lani from her elevated position, she spoke with a chilly tone, "You're Lani, Kane's wife, right?’’
Lani nodded in surprise, not having a chance to react further before Rachel casually strolled into the house. Rachel exuded confidence as if she were in her own home, sitting on the sofa and crossing her arms, gazing at Lani.
"You look so beautiful. No wonder you've captured Kane's heart. But you should know that I am his mother. Even if he wants to marry an ordinary woman like you, I won't approve."
These words left Lani so surprised that her eyes widened. So, this wealthy-looking woman was Kane's mother? That meant Kane's identity was far from ordinary. He couldn't possibly be just an office employee living modestly, as he had once claimed to her.
Meanwhile, Rachel continued to sit on the sofa, arms crossed, mocking Lani for looking both rustic and unattractive, deeming her unworthy of being Kane's wife. She suggests that Kane was only with Lani due to family disputes, having gone through a rebellious phase, not out of genuine love. Rachel urged Lani not to have any illusions.
"Alright, I've said enough. On this card, there are two million dollars. Take it and leave quickly. Don't come near to seduce Kane anymore. Also, if you have any sense, divorce Kane soon. You're not fit to be with my son."
These words successfully enraged Lani, deeply hurt and humiliated.
Chapter 40
‘’I just want to ask, what is Kane's true identity?"
Lani tried to suppress her anger and politely inquired.
Until now, she knew nothing about Kane's background, thinking he was just an ordinary employee. However, her explanation was unbelievable.
Moreover, Lani felt Rachel's disdain for her, though she didn't know why.
Rachel merely scoffed and calmly revealed Kane's true identity to Lani. Despite being mentally prepared, Lani was still shocked to hear Rachel speak.
No wonder Rachel looked down on her when she visited her home. After all, Kane was the wealthiest billionaire in the city, and his monthly pocket money could probably buy two houses like the one Lani was living in.
The disparity between them was too vast.
"No need to feign shock. I've seen people like you a lot. Pretending not to know about Kane's wealth, approaching him, trying to win his affection to become the wife of a billionaire and enjoy a luxurious life."
"But you should know that you're just an ordinary person, not worthy to stand beside Kane. A tycoon like him deserves a billionaire wife, someone talented and intelligent."
After finishing her words, Rachel looked Lani up and down, then shook her head. Seeing Lani standing still and not accepting the bank card since earlier, Rachel threw it towards her and arrogantly tilted her chin.
"Alright, no more words. You want the money, right?"
"Two million dollars should be enough to spend the rest of your life. So, be obedient and stay away from Kane. Don't let me see you again; it's nauseating." After saying this, Rachel swaggered away. Lani stood there dumbfounded, still not adapting to the unexpected situation.
Her heart ached to the point where she couldn't breathe. She stared blankly ahead. It turned out that all of Kane's gentleness towards her was fake. It turned out he only wanted to experience the life of an ordinary person, which is why he chose to be with her.
And it turned out, in this marriage, the only one serious about it was Lani. Whether Kane was rebelling against his family or seeking new sensations, none of it originated from genuine feelings for her.
The more Lani thought, the more painful it became, but she couldn't cry. The feeling of helplessness and heartbreak made her exhausted, wanting to leave everything behind.
At this moment, she wanted to call Kane to clarify everything but felt unnecessary. Rachel just revealed she was Kane's mother.
Surely, Kane and his mother must share the same thought – not wanting more ties with Lani or continuing this foolish marriage. It could be that Kane felt guilty about her and asked his mother to give her two million dollars as a form of compensation for emotional damage.
Lani sighed and decided to call Aurora. Her mind was in turmoil, unable to think clearly about anything. Only beside someone as calm as Aurora could she regain her composure.
So, just half a day later, with the help of Aurora, Lani prepared a divorce letter on the table, packed her belongings, and moved in with Aurora.
When it was just the two of them, emotions burst out, and Aurora silently shed tears.
"I thought we would live happily together for a lifetime, but I never expected everything to turn out like this."
"No wonder I was easily attracted to him from the first meeting. He is outstanding, perfect, special in my heart."
"For Kane, I might just be like any other ordinary woman. Perhaps he married me to rebel against his family, carrying a rebellious mentality. Now, thinking clearly, this hasty and foolish marriage should end."
Lani leaned on Aurora's shoulder, crying and speaking. Despite living together for some time, her feelings for Kane were genuine, and she genuinely wanted to be with him for the rest of her life.
It could be considered the second time Aurora was by Lani's side when Aurora was heartbroken, so she had a more comforting experience than the first time.
"It's okay, Lani, just consider that you fell for a deceitful man. Similar to before, you're not at fault at all; it's just that you happened to love someone who wasn't good."
"There are still many good men in the world, and you will find someone more suitable for you."
Lani still felt upset, pursing her lips. Even though she didn't want to admit it, Kane was the best man she had ever met. He was gentle, warm, handsome, a good cook, and now wealthy as well. Kane was a perfect husband. Every aspect of him was good, except that he didn't genuinely love her.
Thinking about this, Lani could only sigh. Sensing Lani's mood, Aurora didn't continue on this topic but quietly shifted to another.
"Recently, a film crew contacted me, and they want you to play the lead role in their film. The film will be shot in the city of F nearby. Do you want to accept the role?"
"Consider it as going to another city for a leisure trip, not staying here anymore. Also, think of it as calming down to gradually forget the unpleasant things that have happened."
While speaking, Aurora gently patted Lani's shoulder. Lani pursed her lips in thought and eventually nodded.
According to Kane's words, he would be on a business trip for three days and return to the city. Lani certainly didn't want to accidentally run into Kane on the way back, fearing it would hurt her, so avoiding him was the only option she could think of.
"So, we'll go to City F tomorrow. In the meantime, help me inform the film crew that I accept the role."
Lani quickly made the decision, and Aurora decisively nodded in agreement. After that, Lani and Aurora booked flight tickets to City F and packed their clothes into suitcases together to leave.
"It's okay, Lani. Everything will be fine. When Kane comes back, all you need to do is sign the divorce papers, and your marital relationship will end, with no ties left."
"You don't have to listen to the mockery of that flashy woman, Rachel."
Seeing Lani once again lost in thought, staring at a set of silk pajamas, Aurora guessed she was thinking about Kane and tried to console her. In Lani's current mindset, Kane was nothing more than a bad boy who had hurt her heart. So, Aurora just wanted Lani to forget about Kane.
