Chapter 2
Chapter 2
The Alpha Rival
For a moment, I could not move.
My feet felt rooted to the ground, and my heart began to beat so hard that I could hear it in my ears. The wolves around me did not come any closer, but they did not back away either. They stood in a loose circle, watching me like I was prey that had wandered somewhere it did not belong.
Which, in truth, I had.
I swallowed hard and forced myself to look at the man standing in front of me.
Alpha Kael Draven.
I had heard his name many times before, usually in warnings. Children were told not to go near the border because his territory began beyond it. Warriors spoke of him with caution. Elders spoke of him with dislike. To my pack, Kael Draven was not just another Alpha. He was a rival. A threat. The kind of man whose name always carried tension with it.
Standing here now, I understood why.
He was tall. Slightly taller than Lucian, I realized. His shoulders were wide, and there was something steady and controlled about the way he carried himself. He was not trying to look powerful. He simply was. His dark hair fell carelessly over his forehead, and his face held a calm expression that somehow made him more intimidating rather than less.
There was no confusion on his face. No panic. No rush.
He simply watched me.
His eyes stayed on me, sharp and unreadable, as if he was trying to figure out exactly what kind of problem had landed in front of him.
I took a slow step back before I could stop myself.
Immediately, one of the wolves to my left let out a low growl.
My entire body tensed.
Kael did not look away from me, but he lifted one hand slightly.
The growl stopped.
That small action made my nervousness grow stronger.
He had not raised his voice. He had not threatened anyone. One simple movement from him, and they obeyed.
That was power.
Real power.
My throat felt dry.
"I did not mean to come here," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "I crossed the border by mistake."
Kael's expression did not change.
"I can see that."
His voice was deep and even. It was not loud, yet something about the calmness in it made a chill move down my spine.
I looked past him, then around me again, quickly judging my chances of escape.
There were none.
Too many wolves. Too close. Even if I ran, they would catch me in seconds.
My chest tightened.
This was what panic did to people. I had run without thinking and ended up in the worst place possible.
Kael took one slow step toward me.
My heart jumped.
I instinctively stepped back again.
His eyes briefly moved over my face, then lower, noticing the state I was in. My dress was messy. My breathing uneven. I had tried to wipe away my tears before, but clearly I had not done a very good job.
His gaze returned to my face.
"You are trembling," he said.
I hated that he noticed.
I hated even more that he pointed it out so calmly.
I straightened my back and lifted my chin slightly, trying to regain some dignity. "I am not here to cause trouble."
One of the wolves behind him shifted. Then a man stepped forward from the side. He was in human form, tall and muscular, with a scar near his neck and a hard expression on his face.
His eyes moved over me with clear suspicion.
"She belongs to Silver Ridge," he said. "We should send a message to Lucian. Let him come and beg for her."
A few wolves made low sounds that sounded like agreement.
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Kael quickly.
His face remained unreadable, but something colder entered his eyes.
He still did not speak.
The scarred man continued, "Or we keep her. Lucian rejected her tonight, did he not? Word travels fast. Maybe he will still care enough to trade for her. Maybe not."
My stomach twisted painfully.
So the news had already spread.
Of course it had.
A public humiliation like that would travel quickly. Pack members loved gossip almost as much as they loved power. By now other territories had probably already heard that Alpha Lucian rejected the woman he was supposed to take as Luna.
Heat rushed into my face as the memory came back again.
Kael finally spoke.
"Enough, Ronan."
The scarred man immediately fell silent, though the hard look on his face did not disappear.
Kael turned his attention back to me.
"Is it true?"
For a second I did not understand.
Then I realized what he was asking.
My lips parted slightly, but no words came out.
I wanted to deny it.
I wanted to tell him it was none of his business.
But there was no point. He already knew. They all did.
I forced myself to answer.
"Yes."
The word felt sharp as it left my throat.
Kael watched me quietly for several seconds after that. There was no mockery on his face, which surprised me. Men in Lucian's position often smiled when they held power over others.
Kael did not smile at all.
That should have made me feel more comfortable.
Instead, it made me even more uneasy.
The forest had grown strangely quiet around us. Even the wolves seemed more alert, waiting for their Alpha to decide what to do.
My pulse was racing at the base of my throat.
What was he going to do with me?
Take me prisoner?
Drag me back to Lucian and make the humiliation even worse?
Use me against my pack?
I clenched my hands tightly at my sides.
"I will leave," I said quickly. "I crossed by mistake. I know where I am now. I will go back."
This time Kael's mouth moved slightly, almost like he found the idea unrealistic.
"You think I would let you walk through my territory alone after wandering into it at night?"
"I do not need your help."
"No," he replied, and his voice grew slightly firmer. "You need better judgment."
Anger flashed through me.
"I did not ask for your opinion."
Several wolves shifted again at my tone.
My heart gave a hard thud as I realized what I had just said.
He was an Alpha. Not mine, but still an Alpha standing in his own territory with his pack around him.
Kael stared at me.
Then, to my surprise, the look in his eyes changed.
Instead of anger, there was interest.
Almost as if he had expected me to break down or beg, and my response had caught him off guard.
"You have spirit," he said quietly.
I did not like the way those words affected me.
The entire night had stripped my emotions raw, and now I was standing in enemy territory with another Alpha studying me like I was something unusual.
"I have had enough for one night," I said, my voice shaking despite my effort to control it. "So if you are going to kill me, then do it. If not, stop looking at me like that."
The wolves shifted again, but Kael remained still.
Then something changed.
At first it was subtle.
A strange sensation began building in my chest, like an invisible pull tightening around my heart.
My breath caught.
My wolf, who had been restless and hurting since the rejection, suddenly surged forward with a strong reaction that startled me.
Heat and cold rushed through my body at the same time.
I stared at Kael.
He had gone completely still.
The calm Alpha from moments ago now looked different. His jaw tightened slightly, and his eyes narrowed in clear shock.
He took a slow step closer.
This time I did not move.
The pull in my chest became stronger.
My heart was beating wildly now, fast enough to make my hands tremble.
Kael inhaled slowly, as if he had caught a scent that changed everything.
My breathing grew shallow.
Then my wolf reacted again, pushing forward with sudden certainty.
And I understood.
My wolf had recognized something before my mind did.
Kael realized it at the same moment.
The look on his face shifted with sudden disbelief.
The bond between us snapped into place.
I could feel it clearly now in the way my heart reacted to him, in the way my wolf focused completely on the man standing in front of me.
I stared at him, unable to speak.
This could not be happening.
Not tonight.
Not with him.
He was the Alpha of the rival pack. The one my people considered an enemy.
Yet the connection between us was undeniable.
The wolves around us began murmuring quietly as they sensed the shift in the air.
But I could not look away from Kael.
His eyes were fixed on me with intense focus.
Not because he wanted to threaten me.
Because he had felt it too.
His wolf had recognized me.
The realization filled my chest with confusion and disbelief. My mind struggled to catch up with what my wolf already accepted.
For the first time that night, I did not feel invisible.
Kael's jaw tightened.
When he finally spoke, his voice was lower and rougher than before.
"This is not possible."
But it clearly was.
The Moon Goddess had tied me to the one man who should have meant danger.
The man standing in front of me now, surrounded by his wolves, with conflict clearly visible in his eyes.
The scarred man, Ronan, stepped forward again with confusion on his face.
"Alpha?"
Kael's voice immediately cut through the night.
"No one touches her."
The forest went silent.
Every wolf around us froze.
My heart slammed against my ribs as his words settled into the air.
Lucian had rejected me in front of the entire pack as if I meant nothing.
Now Kael stood in front of his wolves and made it clear that none of them were allowed to lay a hand on me.
I did not know what to do with that.
Kael looked at me again, tension visible in his expression now.
"You are coming with me."
Fear immediately rose in my chest.
"What?"
"You cannot stay out here."
"I am not going anywhere with you."
His gaze remained steady.
"You do not have a choice."
Anger and panic mixed inside me.
"I am not your prisoner."
"No," he replied quietly, "and that is exactly why this is a problem."
The words hung between us.
Only a few hours ago I had been standing in front of my pack expecting to be chosen.
Instead I had been rejected.
Now I was standing in enemy territory, surrounded by wolves, staring at a rival Alpha whose presence made my pulse race in ways I did not understand.
And the most confusing part of all was that my wolf had already accepted something my mind was still fighting.
Kael Draven was my mate.
Chapter 3
Into Enemy Territory
For several seconds after Kael said I was coming with him, nobody moved.
The wolves around us waited for my reaction.
I could still feel my heart pounding from the moment the bond snapped into place. My mind was trying to process too many things at once. Just hours ago I had been rejected by Lucian in front of the entire pack. Now the Moon Goddess had decided that the man standing in front of me, the Alpha of the rival pack, was somehow meant to be mine.
It felt unreal.
I forced myself to take a steady breath.
"I am not going anywhere with you," I repeated.
Kael did not look surprised by my answer. If anything, he seemed to expect it.
"You cannot stay out here," he said calmly.
"I will go back to my pack."
His eyes hardened slightly.
"You ran too far into my territory. You will not make it back alone."
"I made it this far."
"Because my patrol found you first."
His answer made my stomach tighten.
He was probably right.
If another patrol had found me instead of him, they might not have waited to ask questions before attacking. Rival packs did not exactly welcome each other with open arms.
Still, that did not mean I trusted him.
"I will take my chances," I said.
I turned and started walking in the direction I believed the border was.
I had only taken three steps when his voice stopped me.
"Aria."
The sound of my name coming from him felt strange.
I kept walking.
Then suddenly a firm hand closed around my wrist.
My entire body froze.
The contact sent a sharp sensation through my arm, like a sudden spark had jumped between us.
My breath caught.
Kael let go immediately, but the reaction had already happened.
The bond between us had responded to the touch.
My heart started beating faster again, and I hated the way my body reacted without my permission.
Kael looked just as affected. His jaw tightened slightly as he pulled his hand back.
For a moment neither of us spoke.
Then he said quietly, "Do not walk away from me in my own territory."
Anger rose inside me.
"You do not own me."
"No," he said. "But right now you are standing in a place where every wolf here answers to me. That means your safety also becomes my responsibility."
"I did not ask for your protection."
"I am aware of that."
The calm way he spoke made my frustration grow stronger.
Behind him, the wolves were watching the exchange carefully. Some of them looked curious. Others looked uneasy.
The scarred man, Ronan, stepped closer to Kael.
His eyes moved between us before he spoke in a lower voice.
"Alpha, we should return to the pack. The patrol has already been gone longer than expected. If anyone from Silver Ridge notices she is missing, they might come looking."
The mention of my pack made my chest tighten again.
Ronan continued carefully, "And if they find her here with us, they might assume we captured her."
The other wolves shifted uncomfortably.
The tension in the group was obvious.
Kael said nothing for a moment.
His gaze returned to me.
Then he spoke clearly enough for all of them to hear.
"We are returning to the pack."
Ronan hesitated.
"And the girl?"
Kael's eyes did not leave mine.
"She comes with us."
A quiet wave of murmurs moved through the wolves.
I felt a fresh wave of anger.
"I said I am not going with you."
Kael's expression remained steady.
"You also said you would take your chances walking through rival territory alone at night. That is not happening."
"You cannot force me."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"You want to test that?"
The challenge in his voice made my stomach twist.
For a moment neither of us spoke.
Then Ronan stepped forward again, clearly uncomfortable.
"Alpha, with respect... bringing her to the pack could create problems."
"Explain."
"She belongs to Silver Ridge. Even if Lucian rejected her, she is still one of them. If their wolves hear that she is inside our territory, they might think we took her."
I noticed the way Ronan avoided saying something directly.
He knew about the mate bond.
They all probably suspected it now.
Kael understood too.
"And if they do?" he asked.
Ronan looked uneasy.
"Then it could lead to conflict."
Kael's voice remained calm.
"It will only lead to conflict if someone gives them a reason."
His eyes moved across the wolves around us.
"Did anyone here attack her?"
The wolves shook their heads.
"Did anyone here threaten her?"
More silence.
Then Kael spoke again.
"Then there is no reason for Silver Ridge to accuse us of anything."
Ronan still looked unconvinced.
"But if they find out about..." He stopped himself before finishing the sentence.
Kael's voice turned sharper.
"They will not find out anything tonight."
His words carried authority that ended the discussion immediately.
The wolves fell silent.
I stood there watching all of this, feeling like my life had suddenly become something I had no control over.
"I am not going with you," I said again.
Kael looked at me.
For a moment I thought he might lose his patience.
Instead, he sighed quietly.
"You are stubborn."
"And you are not listening."
His gaze softened slightly, though the tension in his posture remained.
"If I wanted to keep you as a prisoner, you would already be tied up and carried back to my pack," he said.
The bluntness of his words made me pause.
"I am trying to prevent a worse situation."
"What situation?"
"The one where a lone wolf from Silver Ridge is found wandering through my territory and gets attacked by the next patrol that sees her."
I opened my mouth to argue, but the words stopped in my throat.
Because deep down, I knew that was possible.
Kael took a slow step closer.
This time I did not move away.
His voice lowered slightly.
"You do not have to trust me," he said. "But you should at least trust your own survival instincts."
I looked up at him.
His eyes were steady and serious.
For a moment I felt the strange pull between us again, the same one that had appeared when the bond formed.
I quickly looked away.
"I will stay one night," I said reluctantly. "Then I leave in the morning."
Kael considered my words.
Then he nodded once.
"One night."
The tension in the wolves eased slightly.
Kael turned and gestured for them to move.
The wolves began shifting positions, preparing to head back toward their territory.
Ronan walked ahead of the group while two others moved behind us.
I suddenly realized something.
They were placing me in the center.
Not like a prisoner.
More like someone they were guarding.
Kael walked beside me.
We moved through the forest in silence.
The deeper we went, the more unfamiliar everything became. I had never been inside rival territory before. The trees seemed thicker here, the forest darker and quieter.
My mind kept returning to the same thought.
What would Lucian do when he realized I had not returned?
Would he even care?
The thought hurt more than I expected.
We walked for several minutes before I finally spoke.
"What will you tell your pack?"
Kael glanced at me.
"The truth."
"And what is that?"
"That you wandered into our territory and will leave in the morning."
I studied his expression.
"You will not tell them about the bond."
His jaw tightened slightly.
"No."
That answer surprised me.
"Why not?"
"Because my pack does not need that complication tonight."
His words made sense.
Still, the reality of it settled heavily in my chest.
The Moon Goddess had tied us together, yet both of us were pretending it did not exist.
We continued walking.
Eventually the trees began to thin slightly ahead of us.
Through the branches I could see faint lights in the distance.
Torches.
Buildings.
My heart skipped a beat.
That must be his pack.
As we stepped closer, the sounds of voices began reaching us. Wolves talking. Footsteps moving. The quiet activity of a pack settling down for the night.
Then suddenly one of the wolves ahead of us stopped.
Ronan turned sharply.
His body became tense.
Kael noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
Ronan sniffed the air.
His expression changed.
"There are other wolves here."
My stomach dropped.
"What do you mean?"
Ronan's voice grew tense.
"Silver Ridge wolves."
Every wolf around us froze.
My heart began racing again.
Kael's eyes darkened.
"How many?"
Ronan looked toward the direction of the lights ahead.
"More than a few."
A cold realization slowly spread through my chest.
My pack had come looking for me.
Kael turned toward the clearing ahead just as several large wolves stepped out from the shadows between the trees.
One of them shifted into human form.
Even from the distance I recognized him immediately.
Lucian.
His gaze moved past Kael.
And landed directly on me.
The expression on his face was not the calm confidence I remembered from earlier that night.
It was something far colder.
Lucian took a slow step forward.
Then he spoke.
"Bring her to me."
Kael did not move.
And the look in his eyes made it very clear that he was not planning to obey.
The tension between the two Alphas filled the clearing.
My heart pounded so hard it hurt.
Because suddenly it felt like I had just walked into the beginning of a war.
And I was standing directly between them.
