Chapter 5
The Suspicion
Lucian’s question hung in the air like a blade.
“What did you do to her?”
No one spoke.
The clearing had gone completely still. Even the wolves around us seemed to hold their breath as they waited for someone to answer.
My heart was beating so fast that I could feel it pressing painfully against my ribs.
Lucian was staring directly at Kael now. His eyes were sharp and searching, moving between the two of us as if he was studying something that suddenly made sense to him.
Kael did not move.
He stood beside me, his shoulders squared, his posture calm. But the stillness in him felt different now. It was the kind of quiet that existed just before a storm.
Lucian took another slow step forward.
“You reacted very quickly when I touched her,” he said.
Kael’s voice remained steady. “You were dragging her.”
“That has never bothered you before.”
The words made my stomach tighten.
Lucian’s gaze moved to me again.
“You ran from the ceremony,” he said.
His tone sounded almost conversational, but there was an edge beneath it.
“I did not expect you to run into my rival’s territory.”
“I did not expect that either,” I replied.
Lucian studied me for a moment. His eyes lingered on my face, then shifted slightly toward Kael again.
Something about the way he looked between us made my pulse begin racing again.
He was thinking.
And whatever he was thinking about was not good.
Lucian took another step closer, ignoring the tense wolves around us.
“You ran into the forest,” he continued slowly. “And somehow ended up here.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“And within a very short amount of time, the Alpha of this pack suddenly feels the need to stand between us.”
Kael’s expression hardened.
Lucian tilted his head slightly as if examining a puzzle.
“That is interesting.”
My stomach dropped.
I could feel the tension building again, heavier than before. The wolves on both sides shifted uneasily, watching the two Alphas carefully.
Lucian suddenly reached forward again and grabbed my arm.
His fingers tightened around my wrist.
The reaction was immediate.
Kael moved so fast that the motion blurred.
His hand closed around Lucian’s wrist again, pulling his grip away from me with controlled force.
“Do not touch her,” Kael said.
His voice was low, but the warning inside it was impossible to miss.
The clearing erupted with tension.
Several wolves from both packs shifted forward instinctively, their bodies ready for a fight if one of their Alphas made the first move.
Lucian slowly looked down at the hand Kael had placed on his wrist.
Then he looked back up at Kael.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Lucian smiled.
It was not a friendly smile.
It was the kind of smile someone wore when they had just discovered something valuable.
“Well,” he said quietly, “that explains it.”
Kael released his wrist.
Lucian took a small step back, studying him carefully now.
His eyes moved between us again.
Then he laughed softly.
“The Moon Goddess must have a strange sense of humor.”
My chest tightened.
Lucian’s gaze locked onto Kael.
“Did she really give you my rejected mate?”
A ripple of murmurs moved through the wolves.
Ronan and the others exchanged uneasy glances.
Nobody spoke.
But the silence itself answered Lucian’s question.
Lucian’s smile grew wider.
“I rejected her only hours ago,” he said. “And somehow she runs into your forest and suddenly you cannot stop protecting her.”
His eyes glittered with amusement.
“That is quite a coincidence.”
Kael’s jaw tightened.
“You are making assumptions.”
Lucian chuckled.
“Am I?”
He looked at me again.
Then he shook his head slowly, as if still finding the situation entertaining.
“I should feel insulted,” he continued. “But honestly, this is far more amusing.”
I clenched my hands at my sides.
Lucian had rejected me in front of everyone. Now he stood here speaking about me like I was some strange object he had misplaced.
Lucian turned fully toward Kael again.
“If the bond is real,” he said slowly, “then the situation becomes very interesting.”
Kael’s voice was colder now.
“You should leave.”
Lucian ignored him.
“Because if the Moon Goddess truly tied you to her…”
His eyes flicked briefly toward me.
“Then she has suddenly become much more valuable than she was before.”
Anger rose sharply inside my chest.
Lucian continued speaking as if he was discussing trade goods.
“You see, she grew up in Silver Ridge. She knows our territory. Our defenses. Our pack structure.”
The wolves around us shifted uneasily.
Lucian looked back at Kael.
“I might be willing to make a deal.”
Kael’s eyes darkened.
“What kind of deal?”
Lucian spread his hands slightly.
“You keep her.”
My stomach twisted.
The words felt disgusting.
Lucian continued calmly.
“And in return, you give Silver Ridge a portion of the northern hunting grounds.”
A shocked murmur moved through Kael’s wolves.
The northern hunting grounds were valuable territory.
Lucian watched Kael closely.
“A small price,” he said, “for gaining the loyalty of someone who now belongs to you.”
My chest burned with anger.
Just hours ago Lucian had called me weak and worthless.
Now he was trying to use me to bargain for land.
Kael’s face had grown completely expressionless.
“Your offer is rejected,” he said.
Lucian raised an eyebrow.
“You did not even consider it.”
“I did.”
“And?”
“And the answer is no.”
Lucian’s smile slowly faded.
The tension between the two Alphas grew heavier again.
For a moment it seemed like the clearing might erupt into violence.
Then Lucian suddenly laughed.
“You really intend to keep her.”
Kael did not answer.
Lucian studied him carefully.
“You might want to think about the consequences.”
“What consequences?”
Lucian gestured around them.
“The entire region will eventually hear about this.”
He looked toward the rival wolves surrounding us.
“An Alpha bonded to a woman from his enemy’s pack.”
His eyes returned to Kael.
“That is not a simple situation.”
Lucian turned his attention to me again.
“And you,” he said.
The coldness in his voice made my stomach twist.
“The Moon Goddess must have truly pitied you tonight.”
The words cut deeper than I expected.
Lucian took a step back and gestured for his wolves to move.
“We are leaving.”
The Silver Ridge warriors began shifting back toward the forest.
Lucian followed them for several steps.
Then he stopped.
He turned back one last time.
His eyes rested on Kael.
“The next gathering between the packs will be very interesting.”
Kael said nothing.
Lucian’s gaze moved slowly to me.
His smile returned.
“Because if the bond between you two is real…”
He paused.
Then finished his sentence.
“Your enemies will begin circling.”
A chill moved down my spine.
Lucian held Kael’s gaze for another moment.
Then he said one final sentence before turning away.
“Let us see how long your new mate survives in your world.”
Lucian disappeared into the forest.
The sound of the Silver Ridge wolves slowly faded as they retreated deeper into the trees.
Silence settled over the clearing again.
But this time it felt heavier.
The wolves around us looked uneasy.
I stood there trying to steady my breathing, my heart still pounding from everything that had just happened.
Kael had not moved.
His eyes remained fixed on the direction Lucian had disappeared.
Finally Ronan spoke quietly.
“Alpha…”
Kael turned his head slightly.
“Yes.”
Ronan hesitated.
“If the other packs hear about this…”
He did not finish the sentence.
He did not need to.
The meaning was obvious.
My chest tightened as the realization settled into my mind.
Lucian had been right about one thing.
If the mate bond between Kael and me became known to the other packs, it would not just cause gossip.
It would create enemies.
Because anyone who wanted to weaken Kael would quickly realize something.
His mate could become the easiest target.
And suddenly the forest around us no longer felt safe at all.
Chapter 6
Inside the Rival Pack
The forest felt quieter after Lucian and his warriors disappeared into the darkness.
For several seconds nobody spoke. The wolves from Kael’s pack remained alert, their bodies tense as they watched the direction Lucian had gone. It was clear they did not fully trust that the Silver Ridge pack had truly left.
My own heart was still beating fast.
Everything that had happened in the clearing replayed again and again in my mind. Lucian’s cold words. The way he had looked at me like I was nothing. The way Kael had stepped in front of me without hesitation.
And then the threat Lucian left behind.
Let us see how long your new mate survives in your world.
The words refused to leave my mind.
Kael finally turned away from the trees.
His eyes moved across the wolves around us.
“We are going back,” he said.
His voice was calm again, but there was a firmness to it that left no room for argument.
The wolves immediately began moving.
Some of them shifted into wolf form and disappeared ahead through the forest, clearly heading back to the pack settlement. Others remained in human form, walking with Kael as we followed the narrow path between the trees.
I walked beside him.
The tension between us felt strange.
The bond between us was still there, quiet but noticeable. Every time he moved closer to me, I could feel my wolf reacting in ways that made it difficult to ignore the connection between us.
I tried not to think about it.
Instead I focused on the lights ahead.
As we moved closer to the settlement, the trees began thinning out.
Soon the pack houses came into view.
The rival pack’s territory looked different from Silver Ridge. The buildings were larger and more spread out, with wide paths between them. Torches burned near the entrances of the houses, lighting the area with a warm orange glow.
Wolves were moving around the settlement.
Some were carrying supplies. Others were talking quietly near the fire pits.
But the moment they noticed Kael returning with a group of warriors, their attention shifted.
And then they saw me.
The conversations around the clearing slowly faded.
One by one, the wolves began staring.
I could feel their eyes following me as we walked deeper into the settlement.
Confusion was clear on their faces.
A few of them looked openly suspicious.
I did not blame them.
I did not belong here.
Kael continued walking as if he did not notice the attention.
“Ronan,” he said.
The scarred warrior stepped forward beside him.
“Yes, Alpha.”
“Make sure the patrol reports to the guard captain.”
“It will be done.”
Ronan nodded and moved away quickly, clearly carrying out the order.
We reached a large building at the center of the settlement.
It was bigger than the others and built from heavy wood and stone. The torchlight reflected off the tall windows and wide doors at the entrance.
Kael pushed the doors open and stepped inside.
I hesitated for a moment before following him.
The inside of the building was warm.
A large fire burned in the center of the main room, casting light across the wooden walls and long tables nearby. The room smelled faintly of smoke and pine wood.
Kael stopped walking and turned to face me.
For a moment neither of us spoke.
The silence felt strange after everything that had happened outside.
Finally I broke it.
“You should not have done that.”
Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“Done what?”
“Defend me like that.”
His expression remained calm.
“You expected me to let him drag you away?”
“He had the right to.”
Kael’s gaze hardened.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“He rejected you.”
The words landed between us.
My chest tightened slightly.
I forced myself to meet his eyes.
“That does not change the fact that I belong to Silver Ridge.”
Kael looked at me for a moment, studying my face carefully.
Then he spoke.
“You are still thinking about him.”
I looked away.
“That is not your concern.”
Kael did not respond immediately.
Instead he walked toward one of the windows and looked out at the settlement for a moment.
When he finally spoke again, his voice sounded quieter.
“You should understand something.”
I turned toward him.
“The moment the bond formed,” he said, “everything changed.”
My stomach twisted.
“I did not ask for that bond.”
“Neither did I.”
His answer came quickly.
There was no anger in his voice, only honesty.
For a moment that surprised me.
Kael turned back toward me.
“But whether we asked for it or not does not matter,” he continued. “The bond exists.”
The words made my heart beat faster again.
I tried to ignore the reaction.
“This will create problems for your pack,” I said.
“Yes.”
“You should send me away in the morning.”
His eyes held mine.
“And where will you go?”
I did not answer.
Because the truth was painful.
Silver Ridge was no longer my home.
Lucian had made that clear in front of everyone.
Kael seemed to understand my silence.
“You see the problem,” he said.
Before I could reply, the doors behind us suddenly opened.
Both of us turned.
One of Kael’s warriors hurried inside, breathing heavily as if he had been running.
“Alpha.”
Kael straightened slightly.
“What is it?”
The warrior looked uneasy.
“Scouts just returned.”
Kael waited.
The warrior swallowed before continuing.
“They spotted movement near the southern ridge.”
Kael’s expression grew serious.
“What kind of movement?”
The warrior hesitated.
“Another pack.”
My stomach dropped.
Kael’s eyes sharpened immediately.
“Which pack?”
“We are not completely sure yet,” the warrior said. “But there are several wolves moving toward our territory.”
The air in the room suddenly felt heavier.
My heart began racing again.
Lucian’s warning returned to my mind.
Your enemies will begin circling.
Kael walked slowly toward the warrior.
“How many?”
“At least twenty.”
The number made my chest tighten.
Twenty wolves from another pack meant one thing.
They were not simply passing through.
They were coming here for a reason.
Kael’s voice remained calm, but there was steel beneath it now.
“When will they reach our border?”
“Soon.”
Kael looked toward the door, his mind clearly working through the situation.
Then his eyes slowly shifted back to me.
The look in his gaze made my stomach twist.
Because I suddenly understood what he was thinking.
The rumor had already begun spreading.
Other packs were hearing about the mate bond.
And now they were coming to see it for themselves.
Or to take advantage of it.
Kael spoke quietly.
“It seems Lucian’s warning was not empty.”
A cold feeling spread through my chest.
The enemy packs were already moving.
Chapter 7
Unwelcome Visitors
The room felt colder after the warrior delivered the news.
For a moment nobody spoke. The fire burning in the center of the room cracked softly, but even that sound felt too loud in the heavy silence that had settled between us.
My heart had started beating faster again.
Another pack was approaching.
The thought alone made my stomach tighten. Lucian’s words from earlier replayed in my mind again.
Your enemies will begin circling.
It had not even been long since he left, and already another group of wolves was moving toward Kael’s territory.
Kael stood still for several seconds, thinking.
Then he turned toward the warrior.
“Where are the scouts now?”
“They are watching from the southern ridge,” the warrior replied. “They came back to report as soon as they confirmed the number.”
Kael nodded slightly.
“Call the guard captain. I want the patrols doubled along the southern border.”
The warrior lowered his head respectfully.
“Yes, Alpha.”
He quickly turned and left the room.
The large doors closed behind him with a dull sound that echoed through the quiet hall.
I remained where I was standing.
The tension in the air had become impossible to ignore.
Kael walked slowly toward the window again. Through the glass I could see the pack settlement outside. Wolves were moving between the buildings, and it was clear that word had already begun spreading.
The patrol had returned with news.
Something was happening.
After a moment, Kael spoke without turning toward me.
“This is earlier than I expected.”
My throat felt dry.
“You think they heard the rumor already.”
Kael finally looked back at me.
“Yes.”
The answer was simple.
But the meaning behind it made my chest tighten.
The mate bond between us had barely existed for a few hours, yet already other packs were moving.
I crossed my arms tightly across my chest.
“This is my fault.”
Kael frowned slightly.
“No.”
“If I had not run into your territory—”
“This would still happen eventually.”
His calm tone stopped me.
“The moment the bond formed, the situation became dangerous,” he continued. “You entering my territory only made the discovery happen sooner.”
I looked away.
That did not make the feeling in my chest disappear.
Kael studied my face for a moment before speaking again.
“You are not responsible for other Alphas deciding to test their luck.”
Before I could reply, the doors opened again.
Several wolves entered the hall.
At the front of them was Ronan.
Behind him were two other warriors, both wearing serious expressions.
“Alpha,” Ronan said.
Kael turned toward them.
“Report.”
“They are getting closer.”
“How close?”
“They have stopped near the southern ridge,” Ronan replied. “But they are not hiding.”
Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“So they want to be seen.”
“Yes.”
That made the tension in the room grow even heavier.
Ronan hesitated before continuing.
“We recognized one of them.”
Kael waited.
“It is Alpha Marcus.”
The name meant nothing to me at first.
But judging by the reaction in the room, it meant something to Kael.
“From the Iron Fang Pack,” Ronan added.
Kael let out a quiet breath.
“So he arrived quickly.”
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?”
Ronan glanced at Kael before answering.
“Marcus is known for testing the strength of other packs.”
“That does not sound good.”
“It is not.”
Kael walked toward the door.
“Prepare the outer clearing.”
Ronan nodded immediately.
“Yes, Alpha.”
The wolves began moving quickly again, leaving the hall to carry out the orders.
I followed Kael outside.
The settlement had changed.
Where earlier the wolves had been talking quietly and going about their normal routines, now everyone looked alert.
Warriors were moving into position near the edges of the territory.
Torches were being placed along the outer paths.
The air itself felt tense.
I could hear the faint sound of wolves shifting forms somewhere in the distance.
Kael continued walking toward the outer edge of the settlement.
I kept pace beside him.
“You are really going to meet them,” I said.
“Yes.”
“You do not know why they came.”
Kael glanced at me.
“I have a good idea.”
We reached the outer clearing a few minutes later.
The trees surrounding the clearing were dark and thick, forming a natural border between the pack territory and the forest beyond.
Several of Kael’s warriors had already gathered there.
They stood in a loose formation, watching the forest carefully.
The night air felt cooler here.
My heart began beating faster again as I stared at the shadows between the trees.
For a few moments nothing happened.
Then movement appeared in the darkness.
Large wolves stepped out from the forest one by one.
Their eyes reflected the torchlight as they moved into the clearing.
There were many of them.
More than the warrior earlier had said.
My stomach tightened.
The wolves slowly shifted into human form.
At the front of them stood a tall man with dark hair and broad shoulders.
His posture was confident.
His eyes moved across Kael’s warriors before settling on Kael.
Then he smiled.
The smile did not feel friendly.
“Well,” the man said.
His voice carried easily across the clearing.
“I see the rumors were worth investigating.”
The wolves around Kael grew more tense.
Marcus walked a few steps closer.
“I was surprised when I heard the news,” he continued. “But curiosity is a powerful thing.”
Kael did not move.
“What news?”
Marcus’s eyes flicked toward me.
Then back to Kael.
“The rumor that the Moon Goddess gave you a very unusual mate tonight.”
My heart began pounding harder.
The wolves around us shifted uneasily.
Marcus laughed softly.
“You see why I came.”
Kael’s voice remained calm.
“You came to my territory in the middle of the night because of gossip.”
Marcus shrugged.
“I came to see if the gossip was true.”
His eyes moved back to me again.
The way he looked at me made my skin crawl.
“So,” Marcus said slowly, “which one is she?”
The clearing went silent.
Every wolf there knew exactly what he meant.
Kael’s expression hardened.
“You are standing on my land,” he said. “Choose your next words carefully.”
Marcus smiled again.
“I am only asking a question.”
His gaze remained fixed on me.
Then he spoke again.
“If the rumor is true, then this woman is now the most interesting wolf in the region.”
My heart was beating so hard it almost hurt.
Kael took one step forward.
“That is enough.”
Marcus stopped smiling.
For a moment the two Alphas stared at each other.
The tension between them was sharp and dangerous.
Then Marcus spoke again.
“Relax, Kael.”
His eyes moved slowly across the clearing.
“I did not come to fight.”
“Then leave.”
Marcus tilted his head slightly.
“I came to confirm something.”
His gaze returned to me.
And then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“If she really is your mate…”
He paused.
Then finished the sentence.
“…then taking her would be the fastest way to weaken you.”
Chapter 8
The First Move
Marcus’s words settled heavily over the clearing.
For a moment nobody spoke.
The torches around the clearing flickered in the night air, casting shifting shadows across the wolves standing on both sides. The warriors from Kael’s pack stood tense and alert, their eyes fixed on the wolves from the Iron Fang pack.
My heart was beating so loudly that I could almost hear it in my ears.
Marcus had not even tried to hide his intention.
He had said it openly, right in front of everyone.
Taking her would be the fastest way to weaken you.
The meaning behind those words was clear.
I was not just a rumor anymore.
I was a target.
Kael stepped forward slowly.
The movement was calm, but the air around him felt different now. The quiet control he had been maintaining all night had sharpened into something far more dangerous.
“You should leave,” Kael said.
Marcus did not move.
Instead he looked amused.
“I thought you said the same thing earlier.”
“And I meant it.”
Marcus looked around the clearing, studying the warriors standing behind Kael.
Then his gaze slowly returned to me.
“You see the problem,” Marcus said casually. “If the rumor is true, your enemies now have a weakness they did not have yesterday.”
My stomach tightened.
Kael’s voice became colder.
“You are standing very close to testing my patience.”
Marcus laughed quietly.
“Relax. If I came here to attack, I would not have brought only twenty wolves.”
The warriors around the clearing shifted uneasily.
Marcus continued speaking as if the situation did not bother him at all.
“I only wanted to see the situation with my own eyes.”
His gaze returned to me again.
“You must be her.”
The way he said it made my skin crawl.
I felt Kael move slightly beside me.
He had stepped just enough to place himself more clearly between Marcus and me.
Marcus noticed the movement immediately.
“There it is again,” he said.
“What?”
“That reaction.”
Marcus’s eyes remained fixed on Kael.
“You move in front of her every time someone looks too closely.”
Kael did not answer.
Marcus slowly nodded to himself as if he had just confirmed something.
“So the rumor is true.”
The wolves around us exchanged uneasy glances.
Marcus crossed his arms casually.
“This is quite an interesting development.”
Kael’s voice remained steady.
“You confirmed what you came for. Now leave.”
Marcus sighed dramatically.
“You are no fun tonight.”
Then his expression changed slightly.
The amusement faded, replaced by something more calculating.
“You realize this will not stop with me.”
Kael said nothing.
Marcus gestured toward the forest behind him.
“Other packs will come.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“Some of them will not be as polite.”
My chest tightened.
Marcus was not threatening.
He was stating a fact.
Kael stepped forward another step.
“That is my concern.”
Marcus studied him carefully.
“You are very confident.”
Kael’s voice lowered.
“You are still standing on my land.”
Marcus stared at him for several seconds.
Then he let out a quiet breath and lifted his hands slightly.
“Very well.”
The warriors behind him relaxed slightly.
Marcus turned as if he was preparing to leave.
For a moment I thought the confrontation was over.
Then Marcus suddenly stopped.
He turned his head slightly toward one of the wolves standing behind him.
The movement was subtle.
So subtle that most wolves probably would not have noticed it.
But Kael did.
His body stiffened instantly.
“What are you doing?” Kael asked.
Marcus smiled faintly.
“Nothing.”
But at that exact moment, one of the wolves from the Iron Fang pack moved.
The wolf lunged forward.
Straight toward me.
Everything happened so fast that my mind barely had time to react.
I heard the sound of claws hitting the ground.
Someone shouted.
The wolf was only a few steps away from me when Kael moved.
He intercepted the attack with terrifying speed.
His arm slammed into the wolf’s chest, throwing the attacker sideways before he could reach me.
The wolf crashed into the dirt with a heavy sound.
Chaos erupted in the clearing.
Several wolves from Kael’s pack shifted instantly, their bodies transforming as they rushed forward.
The wolves from the Iron Fang pack did the same.
Growls filled the air.
My heart was racing so fast that it felt like it might burst out of my chest.
Marcus did not look surprised.
In fact, he looked almost satisfied.
“I told you,” he said calmly. “Curiosity can lead to interesting results.”
Kael’s voice cut through the clearing like a blade.
“Stop.”
His command carried the full force of an Alpha order.
The wolves from his pack froze immediately.
Marcus lifted one hand.
His wolves hesitated before stopping as well.
The clearing was suddenly silent again, but the tension had doubled.
The wolf that had attacked me slowly stood up from the ground, glaring at Kael.
Marcus looked at him briefly before turning back to Kael.
“Now we know.”
Kael’s eyes burned with anger.
“You just attacked a member of my territory.”
Marcus shrugged.
“One of my wolves acted on instinct.”
Kael took another step forward.
“That was not instinct.”
Marcus smiled faintly.
“No?”
The two Alphas stared at each other again.
The tension between them felt even more dangerous than before.
Marcus looked toward me one last time.
Then he spoke quietly.
“You defend her quickly.”
Kael did not answer.
Marcus’s smile widened slightly.
“That confirms everything.”
Kael’s voice was dangerously calm.
“Leave.”
Marcus held his gaze for another moment.
Then he nodded once.
“Very well.”
He turned toward his wolves.
“We are finished here.”
The Iron Fang wolves slowly began retreating back into the forest.
But before Marcus disappeared into the darkness, he turned one last time.
His eyes landed directly on me.
And the look in them made my stomach drop.
“Now the other packs will know where to start looking.”
Then he vanished into the trees.
The clearing remained silent for several seconds after the last of the Iron Fang wolves disappeared.
My breathing was uneven.
The tension had not left the air.
If anything, it felt heavier.
Kael turned toward his warriors.
“Double the patrols.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Ronan answered immediately.
The wolves began moving again, spreading out through the forest to reinforce the borders.
I stood where I was, trying to steady my breathing.
My heart was still pounding.
Kael turned back toward me.
“Are you hurt?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
He studied my face carefully, as if making sure I was telling the truth.
Then he exhaled slowly.
“This is exactly what I was trying to avoid.”
My stomach tightened.
“They are coming because of me.”
“Yes.”
The answer was simple.
Honest.
And terrifying.
Kael looked toward the dark forest where Marcus had disappeared.
“This was only the first move.”
The words sent a cold feeling through my chest.
Because suddenly I understood something clearly.
Marcus had not come to fight.
He had come to confirm the rumor.
And now that he knew the truth…
Every enemy Kael had would soon know exactly where his weakness was.
Chapter 9
The Night of Blood
The forest did not feel peaceful anymore.
Even after Marcus and his wolves disappeared into the darkness, the tension around Kael’s territory remained heavy. The warriors from his pack continued moving along the borders, strengthening patrol routes and watching the forest carefully for any sign of movement.
No one believed the night was truly over.
I could feel it in the way the wolves moved around the settlement. Conversations were quieter. Eyes were more alert. Every sound coming from the forest made someone turn their head.
Danger had already arrived once tonight.
Everyone knew it could happen again.
Kael stood at the edge of the clearing for several minutes after Marcus left. His gaze remained fixed on the dark line of trees as if he expected another group of wolves to step out at any moment.
Finally he turned toward Ronan.
“Make sure the southern and eastern borders stay covered,” Kael said.
Ronan nodded.
“They are already rotating patrols.”
“Good.”
Ronan hesitated before speaking again.
“You think Marcus will return tonight?”
Kael’s voice was calm, but there was no hesitation in his answer.
“No.”
Ronan frowned slightly.
“Then what are we waiting for?”
Kael looked back toward the forest.
“We are waiting for someone who is less patient than Marcus.”
The words made my stomach tighten.
Lucian.
The thought came immediately.
Lucian had left the clearing earlier with a warning in his voice. And after everything that had happened tonight, it was impossible to ignore the possibility that he might return.
Ronan seemed to reach the same conclusion.
“You think Silver Ridge will move tonight.”
Kael did not answer right away.
But the silence itself was enough.
Ronan nodded once.
“I will warn the patrol captains.”
He quickly turned and began walking across the clearing.
I remained standing beside Kael.
The air around us felt cooler now, and the torches along the clearing flickered as the night wind moved through the trees.
My heart had finally begun slowing down after Marcus’s attack attempt.
But the uneasy feeling in my chest had not disappeared.
I looked at Kael.
“You really think Lucian will come back.”
Kael glanced at me.
“He is proud.”
“That does not mean he will attack another pack’s territory.”
“He already feels insulted.”
The answer came without hesitation.
“You rejected his authority when you stepped between us,” I said quietly.
Kael looked back toward the forest again.
“Yes.”
The simple word made my stomach twist.
“You did that because of the bond,” I said.
Kael’s expression did not change.
“Yes.”
His honesty caught me off guard.
“You could have ignored it.”
“No.”
The firmness in his voice surprised me again.
“Why?”
Kael finally turned to face me fully.
“Because the moment another Alpha puts his hands on my mate, the bond stops being something I can ignore.”
The words made my heart skip.
I quickly looked away.
Before I could say anything else, a sudden howl cut through the forest.
It came from the southern border.
Every wolf in the clearing froze.
Then another howl answered it.
My chest tightened.
That was not a patrol signal.
That was a warning.
Kael’s entire posture changed.
His voice rose sharply.
“Positions.”
The warriors nearby moved instantly.
Several wolves shifted into wolf form and sprinted toward the forest.
Ronan came running back into the clearing.
“Alpha!”
Kael was already moving toward him.
“How many?”
“Too many.”
My heart began racing again.
“What do you mean too many?”
Ronan looked grim.
“Silver Ridge wolves.”
The words hit like a punch.
Kael’s eyes hardened.
“How far from the border?”
“They crossed it already.”
The tension in the clearing exploded.
Wolves began shifting forms all around us. Some grabbed weapons while others moved toward the forest in wolf form.
The quiet settlement had suddenly turned into controlled chaos.
Kael turned toward Ronan.
“Hold the eastern flank.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
Ronan shifted into wolf form and sprinted toward the forest with several warriors following him.
Kael turned back toward me.
“You need to go inside.”
“I am not hiding while everyone else fights.”
“This is not a debate.”
His voice was sharp now.
“Lucian will be looking for you.”
“I know.”
“That is exactly why you cannot stay out here.”
Before I could argue again, another howl echoed through the forest.
This one was closer.
Much closer.
The sound of running wolves followed it.
My heart was beating so fast that I could barely think.
Kael stepped in front of me slightly.
“Stay behind me.”
“I do not need protection.”
“You do tonight.”
The words had barely left his mouth when movement exploded out of the forest.
Large wolves burst through the trees at full speed.
Their eyes reflected the torchlight as they rushed into the clearing.
Growls and snarls filled the air.
Kael’s warriors met them immediately.
The collision between the two packs was violent and sudden.
Wolves clashed in the dirt, teeth snapping and claws striking as the fight erupted across the clearing.
The sounds were overwhelming.
Growls.
Crashes.
Shouting voices.
My heart pounded wildly as I watched the chaos unfolding around me.
Then a familiar voice cut through the noise.
“Find her!”
Lucian.
The moment I heard him, my stomach dropped.
I turned toward the forest.
Lucian stepped out from between the trees in human form, his eyes scanning the clearing quickly.
Then he saw me.
His expression changed immediately.
“There she is.”
My chest tightened.
Several wolves from Silver Ridge broke away from the fight and rushed toward us.
Kael moved instantly.
He stepped in front of me as the first wolf lunged.
The wolf shifted into human form mid attack.
Kael’s fist slammed into his jaw, knocking him sideways before he could reach me.
Another wolf came from the left.
Kael grabbed him and threw him back into the dirt.
The fight around us grew more violent.
Lucian walked forward slowly through the chaos.
His eyes never left me.
“You should have come when I told you to.”
I felt anger rising through the fear.
“You rejected me.”
Lucian stopped a few steps away.
“That does not mean you get to belong to him.”
Kael stepped forward.
“She does not belong to you anymore.”
Lucian’s gaze shifted to him.
“You think the Moon Goddess made a mistake.”
Kael said nothing.
Lucian laughed coldly.
“You can have her.”
My stomach twisted.
“But that does not mean I will allow you to keep her.”
The words made my blood run cold.
Lucian moved suddenly.
His hand reached toward me.
Kael intercepted him instantly.
The two Alphas collided with a force that made the nearby wolves stumble back.
Their fight was fast and brutal.
Lucian swung first.
Kael blocked the strike and drove his shoulder into Lucian’s chest, forcing him back several steps.
Lucian recovered quickly.
“You should have stayed out of this.”
Kael’s voice was low.
“You should have stayed out of my territory.”
Lucian attacked again.
The fight between them exploded across the clearing.
The wolves around them backed away slightly as the two Alphas clashed.
Their strength was obvious.
Each strike landed with heavy force.
My heart was racing wildly as I watched them.
Then something happened.
Lucian shifted suddenly.
His body transformed into a massive gray wolf.
Before Kael could react, Lucian lunged forward with his jaws open.
Straight toward Kael’s throat.
Everything seemed to slow.
My chest tightened as I realized what was about to happen.
Lucian was trying to kill him.
And Kael had only a split second to react.
Chapter 10
The Alpha’s Mate
Everything seemed to slow down in that moment.
Lucian’s massive gray wolf lunged forward with terrifying speed, his jaws open as he aimed directly for Kael’s throat. The sound of the fight around us faded for a brief second as my mind focused on the single terrifying thing happening in front of me.
My heart slammed painfully against my chest.
Kael had only a moment to react.
At the last possible second, he shifted.
The transformation was fast and powerful. One moment Kael stood in human form, the next a large black wolf burst forward, meeting Lucian’s attack head on.
The impact between them shook the ground beneath their paws.
Both wolves crashed into each other with violent force.
Growls filled the clearing as they rolled across the dirt, teeth snapping and claws tearing through the ground as each tried to overpower the other.
The fight around them continued, but it was impossible to ignore the battle between the two Alphas.
Lucian’s wolf was massive and aggressive, his movements filled with fury as he tried again and again to reach Kael’s throat.
Kael moved differently.
His attacks were controlled.
Precise.
He avoided Lucian’s jaws and struck back with powerful bites and sharp claws, forcing Lucian to step back again and again.
The air felt heavy with tension.
The smell of dirt and blood mixed with the smoke from the torches as wolves clashed across the clearing.
My heart was beating so hard that it almost hurt.
Every time Lucian lunged forward, my chest tightened with fear that he might reach Kael before Kael could stop him.
Lucian’s wolf snarled loudly as he rushed forward again.
This time he managed to knock Kael off balance.
The black wolf stumbled back a step, and Lucian immediately took advantage of the opening.
He lunged again.
Straight for Kael’s neck.
My stomach twisted.
Without thinking, I moved.
“Stop!”
The word left my mouth before I even realized I had shouted.
Both wolves froze for a split second.
The sudden sound of my voice had broken the rhythm of the fight.
Kael’s wolf stepped back slightly, his dark eyes turning toward me.
Lucian’s wolf did the same.
The clearing grew quieter as several wolves paused their fights to watch what was happening.
My chest was rising and falling quickly as I stepped forward.
The air around me felt thick with tension, but I forced myself to keep moving until I stood between them.
Both wolves were breathing heavily.
Their fur was messy and streaked with dirt from the fight.
Lucian’s wolf slowly shifted back into human form.
His chest rose and fell with each breath as he stared at me.
“You should move,” he said coldly.
I shook my head.
“No.”
Lucian’s expression darkened.
“This is not your fight.”
“You made it my fight the moment you attacked his territory.”
Lucian laughed bitterly.
“You are defending him now.”
My heart tightened, but I did not look away.
“You rejected me,” I said quietly.
The words hung in the air between us.
Lucian’s jaw clenched.
“That does not mean you get to stand with my enemy.”
Kael shifted back into human form behind me.
I could feel his presence just a step away.
Strong.
Steady.
“You lost the right to decide anything about her the moment you rejected her,” Kael said.
Lucian’s eyes moved between us.
The anger in his expression was obvious.
“You think this changes anything?” Lucian asked.
Kael’s voice remained calm.
“It changes everything.”
Lucian looked at me again.
For a moment something almost like regret crossed his face.
Then it disappeared.
“You are making a mistake,” he said.
“Maybe,” I replied.
“But it is my mistake to make.”
Lucian looked around the clearing.
Several of his wolves had already retreated back toward the forest after the fight between the Alphas stopped.
The warriors from Kael’s pack stood nearby, watching carefully in case the battle started again.
Lucian’s shoulders rose and fell slowly as he took a deep breath.
Finally he stepped back.
“This is not over.”
Kael did not respond.
Lucian looked at me one last time.
Then he turned and walked toward the forest.
His remaining wolves quickly followed him.
Within moments the Silver Ridge pack disappeared back into the darkness.
The clearing slowly grew quiet again.
The tension that had filled the air during the battle began fading little by little.
My heart was still beating fast.
I stood there for several seconds before finally turning around.
Kael was watching me.
The torchlight flickered across his face, and for the first time since I met him, the expression in his eyes looked different.
Less guarded.
More thoughtful.
The wolves around us slowly began returning to human form.
Ronan walked toward us, looking relieved.
“The Silver Ridge wolves are retreating,” he said.
Kael nodded.
“Keep the patrols active tonight.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
Ronan quickly left to organize the warriors again.
Soon the clearing began settling down.
Wolves moved around quietly, checking on each other and helping anyone who had been injured during the fight.
I remained standing in the same spot.
My hands felt slightly shaky.
Kael stepped closer.
“You should rest,” he said.
I looked up at him.
“You could have been killed.”
His expression remained calm.
“So could Lucian.”
The answer made me shake my head slightly.
“You still fought him.”
“He attacked my territory.”
His voice softened slightly.
“And he tried to take you.”
My heart skipped.
For a moment neither of us spoke.
The bond between us felt stronger now than it had earlier in the night.
I could feel it in the quiet space between us.
“I never expected any of this,” I admitted.
“Neither did I.”
I looked toward the forest where Lucian had disappeared.
“I do not belong in Silver Ridge anymore.”
Kael was silent for a moment.
Then he said something that made my chest tighten again.
“You belong where you choose to stand.”
I looked back at him.
The torchlight reflected in his dark eyes.
Around us, the pack slowly returned to their normal routines.
The fight had ended.
The danger had passed for the night.
But something important had changed.
I had run into this territory by accident.
Now I stood in the center of it, surrounded by wolves who had once been enemies.
And beside the Alpha who had fought to protect me.
The bond between us was still new.
Still confusing.
But one thing had become clear.
The path that had brought me here had not been an accident.
And whether I was ready or not…
I had become the Alpha’s mate.
Chapter 11
The Blood Moon Secret
Morning arrived slowly over Kael’s territory.
The night had been long, and even though the battle had ended hours earlier, the pack had remained alert until the first light of dawn touched the trees. Patrol wolves were still moving along the borders, watching carefully in case Silver Ridge returned.
I had barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, the memories from the night before came rushing back. Lucian’s wolf lunging toward Kael. The sound of claws striking the ground. The fear that filled my chest when I thought Kael might not escape the attack in time.
Even now my heart felt uneasy.
I sat near one of the windows inside the pack house, watching the sunlight slowly spread across the settlement outside. Wolves were already moving through the territory, carrying supplies, repairing small damages from the fight, and talking quietly with each other.
Some of them glanced toward the pack house when they passed.
I knew why.
Word had already spread.
Everyone in the territory now knew that their Alpha had brought a woman from the rival pack into their home.
And that the Moon Goddess had tied that woman to him.
A quiet knock came from the door behind me.
Before I could answer, the door opened.
Ronan stepped inside.
His expression was more relaxed than it had been during the night, but there was still a seriousness in his eyes.
“The healer would like to see you,” he said.
I frowned slightly.
“The healer?”
Ronan nodded.
“You were close to the fight last night. The Alpha asked her to check that you were not injured.”
“I told Kael I was fine.”
“That does not matter,” Ronan replied. “The Alpha prefers to be certain.”
The way he said it made it clear that this was not a request.
I stood up slowly.
“Where is she?”
Ronan gestured toward the door.
“I will take you.”
We walked across the settlement together.
The morning air felt cool and fresh compared to the heavy tension of the night before. Several wolves greeted Ronan respectfully as we passed them. Some looked at me with curiosity, while others seemed unsure what to think.
I did not blame them.
Only hours ago their Alpha had fought another pack because of me.
We stopped in front of a smaller wooden building near the center of the settlement.
“This is the healer’s house,” Ronan said.
He opened the door and gestured for me to go inside.
The room smelled faintly of herbs and smoke.
Shelves lined the walls, filled with small jars and bundles of dried plants. A gray haired woman stood near a wooden table, organizing several glass bottles.
She turned when she heard us enter.
Her eyes moved to me immediately.
“So this is the girl.”
Her voice was calm and thoughtful.
I felt slightly uncomfortable under her gaze.
“Yes,” Ronan said. “The Alpha asked you to examine her.”
The healer nodded.
“Thank you, Ronan. You can leave us.”
Ronan gave a short nod and stepped back outside, closing the door behind him.
The room grew quiet.
The healer approached me slowly.
“I am Mara,” she said.
“Aria.”
“I know.”
Her eyes studied my face carefully.
“Sit down.”
I obeyed, sitting on the wooden chair beside the table.
Mara placed her hand gently against my wrist.
Her fingers rested there for a moment as she seemed to concentrate.
I expected her to check for injuries.
Instead her expression slowly changed.
Her eyebrows pulled together slightly.
“That is strange.”
My stomach tightened.
“What is strange?”
She did not answer immediately.
Instead she placed her other hand against my shoulder.
Her eyes closed briefly.
The silence in the room stretched for several seconds.
Then she opened her eyes again.
Her expression had become serious.
“Did you feel anything unusual when the bond formed last night?” she asked.
I frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“Anything different about your wolf.”
I thought back to the moment in the forest when the bond snapped into place between Kael and me.
“My wolf reacted strongly,” I said slowly. “But I assumed that was normal.”
Mara shook her head slightly.
“That reaction was stronger than normal.”
My chest tightened.
“What are you saying?”
Mara stepped back from me.
For a moment she seemed to be thinking carefully before speaking again.
“Your wolf carries something rare.”
My heart began beating faster.
“I do not understand.”
Mara looked directly into my eyes.
“Your bloodline is not ordinary.”
The words made my stomach twist.
“What does that mean?”
“It means,” she said quietly, “that you are part of a very old lineage.”
She walked toward the shelves and picked up a small glass jar filled with dark herbs.
“Long ago, before the packs divided the territories the way they do now, there were wolves born during the Blood Moon who carried unusual strength.”
I listened carefully.
“These wolves were rare,” Mara continued. “Very rare.”
She returned to the table.
“They were called Blood Moon wolves.”
My chest tightened.
“And you believe I am one of them?”
Mara nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“That cannot be true.”
“Your wolf reacted in a way I have only heard about in old stories.”
I stared at her.
“Why would Lucian reject me if that was true?”
Mara studied my face.
“That is the interesting part.”
My stomach twisted.
“What do you mean?”
Mara’s voice lowered slightly.
“Some Alphas fear power they cannot control.”
The thought hit me like a sudden realization.
Lucian.
Had he known?
Mara continued speaking.
“If Lucian suspected your bloodline, rejecting you would prevent the power from strengthening his pack.”
The idea made my chest feel tight.
“He rejected me because he thought I was weak.”
“Or because he thought you were dangerous.”
Silence filled the room.
My mind raced as I tried to understand everything she was saying.
Mara folded her hands calmly.
“There is something else you should understand.”
“What?”
“A Blood Moon wolf does not only strengthen herself.”
My heart beat faster.
“What do you mean?”
She looked toward the window for a moment before answering.
“When a Blood Moon wolf forms a mate bond with an Alpha, the connection strengthens the entire pack.”
The words made my stomach drop.
Mara’s eyes returned to mine.
“That means the Alpha who stands beside you becomes far more powerful.”
I stared at her in disbelief.
Outside the healer’s house, the pack settlement was beginning its normal day.
But inside the room everything suddenly felt different.
Because if what Mara was saying was true…
Then the Moon Goddess had not simply given Kael a mate.
She had given him a power that could change the balance between every pack in the region.
And the moment the other Alphas discovered the truth…
They would not stop coming.
