Chapter 29

“To New Beginnings”

Zara’s POV

Shutting the door behind me gave a deep feeling of satisfaction.

My new office smelled of lavender and leather. Warm sunlight seeped in through the wide windows, casting golden lines across the polished desk and cream walls. My lips curled into a small smile at the sight of my own mini bar. A silver bucket sat proudly on it, holding a bottle of champagne tucked in ice.

A silent gesture from Leo. No doubt.

The door flew open and Mia rushed in. Instantly, we both let out a high-pitched scream like teenagers who had just received acceptance letters to their dream school.

Her eyes sparkled so brightly I knew she was genuinely happy for me.

“CEO Zara Smith,” she announced dramatically with a deep bow.

I burst into laughter and pulled her into a tight embrace.

“We did it, Mia. We actually did it.”

Back in New York, we had mapped out every step of how we would infiltrate Wesley Group. We expected resistance. We expected war. We did not expect it to unfold this smoothly.

Leo truly was a mastermind.

“It’s all coming together, Zara,” Mia said softly. “I’m so happy to see our plans fall into place.”

I hugged her again before she pulled back, curiosity dancing across her face.

“After your meeting with Zane, Elora stormed out like someone who smelled smoke before the fire started. She looked furious.”

I raised a brow. “I might have had something to do with that.”

“The child incident?”

I nodded.

Mia tilted her head. “I still can’t believe that adorable little boy belongs to Zane and Elora.”

My expression softened. “Me neither.”

A quiet ache pressed against my ribs.

“When we take down his parents,” I continued slowly, “what happens to him?”

Mia squeezed my hand. “I know what seeing him must’ve stirred up. You don’t have to hide it from me.”

I shrugged lightly. “That pain forged me into who I am. Without it, I’d probably still be begging Zane to take me back.”

The thought disgusted me.

Before Mia could respond, a tiny voice echoed from the corridor.

“Hey, Miss!”

I looked up just in time to see Lucas rushing in, clutching a stuffed lion. His smile was so bright it almost hurt to look at.

“Lucas,” I said softly, kneeling as he threw himself into my arms.

“What are you doing here?”

“My mum had to go,” he pouted. “And my dad is working. He won’t play with me.”

Of course.

I glanced at Mia for rescue, but she immediately raised both hands and mouthed, “Not me.”

She slipped out with a teasing grin. Traitor.

I sighed and turned back to Lucas. “Well, I’m glad you came to say hi.”

We sat on the carpet, moving toy lion around like it was king of a jungle made of office furniture. His laughter filled the room—pure and untouched by the ugliness surrounding his family name.

For a brief, dangerous second… it felt natural.

Too natural.

An intern eventually appeared at the door, flustered and apologetic, sent to retrieve him.

As she lifted him, Lucas twisted around to look at me.

“Will you play with me again?” he asked, hugging his lion tightly.

I smiled gently. “Of course, Lucas. Anytime.”

He beamed before disappearing down the hallway.

The door closed.

And an emptiness I wasn’t prepared for settled quietly inside me.

Later that night.

I kicked off my heels the second I entered the house, letting them fly across the room. My body sank into the couch as I closed my eyes. Exhausted. Victorious.

The front door opened.

Leo walked in with his sleeves rolled up, a bottle of red wine in one hand and his bag in the other. His expression mirrored mine—tired but triumphant.

He dropped everything on the table, then stepped toward me.

Before I could react, he pulled me into a deep hug.

My eyes widened. My hands hovered awkwardly for a second before I slowly wrapped them around him.

The warmth of him. The steadiness.

He pulled back just enough for our eyes to meet. Neither of us spoke. The silence wasn’t awkward this time—just heavy with something unnamed.

“Well… you did well today,” I said finally, clearing my throat.

“You too,” he replied softly. “And I’m sorry for the…”

He gestured vaguely, mimicking a hug in the air.

I smiled faintly. “It’s okay. No rules for tonight.”

He returned the smile and went to get glasses.

We raised them at the same time.

“To new beginnings,” I said.

The glasses clinked.

The wine was rich and smooth—earned.

“Did you see Zane’s face?” Leo chuckled.

I smirked. “He deserves every emotion he’s choking on.”

“I almost felt bad.”

“I didn’t,” I replied calmly. “Not even a little.”

We sat in front of the fireplace, watching the flames dance.

After a moment, Leo shifted closer. He reached for my hands and laced his fingers with mine. I didn’t pull away.

“Today… about the boy,” he said gently.

I stared into the fire.

“I know you didn’t want to talk about it. But when we’re alone, you don’t have to pretend. We act enough outside.”

I looked at him. Really looked at him.

A soft smile touched my lips. I nodded.

Something charged the air between us. Something quiet but undeniable.

I stood abruptly. “I should change.”

Before I could disappear down the hallway, his voice stopped me.

“Zara.”

I turned.

“I meant it,” he said, eyes steady on mine. “You’re not alone in this.”

My heart skipped once. Hard.

I couldn’t trust my voice, so I simply nodded.

Then I walked to my room, his words following me like a promise I wasn’t sure I was ready to believe.

Chapter 30

“My Husband Moaned Her Name in Bed”Elora’s POVNight

had fallen when I left the office to go to a home that no longer brought joy and peace. Zane suddenly lost his sweetness when our son started to grow up, not even when Zara came back, if I was being honest.

He only grew more distant and aggravated once that bitch came back. The driver drove slowly as I stared out the glass window, taking in the city lights and letting the cold breeze rest on my skin.

I couldn’t be the only one who felt like I was in a music video when I looked outside the car window as a child. I smiled at the thought of that.I should feel triumphant since Mason handed me the gold I needed to bring Zara down, but could my happy marriage with Zane ever be restored to how it was? I was about to close my eyes to sleep a little before reaching the house when my phone rang. It was Zane’s driver.

Why could he be calling?I picked it in a heartbeat and placed it on my ear. “What?”

“Good evening, ma’am. Mr Wesley is too drunk, and I have a family emergency to get to. He permitted me to go already, but he is too drunk to drive himself, ma’am. Can you please pick him up on your way?”I sighed and tilted my head in disappointment.

“Okay, just send me the address.” I told the driver to turn back as we made our way to the bar where Zane had drunk himself to a stupor. There was so much noise when we got outside, with some drunk men and women trooping out and others vomiting in corners. Just seeing them made me wanna puke.

When I got in, everywhere smelled like regret and stale perfume. I rolled my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose as I scanned everywhere for Zane. I finally caught sight of his favorite blue tie and knew he was the one. I hurried towards him because I couldn’t wait to get out of here.

On getting to him, I cursed softly and grabbed his belongings with one hand and held him up with another. He looked up and let out a bitter laugh. “Look who came to save me, my sweet wife,” he stuttered drunkenly.

I shook my head and didn’t answer him. “Who called you, though…Were you afraid I’d be with another woman?” he asked as I dragged him further from where he was seated. “Just shut up, Zane,” I muttered, pulling his arm.

“You’re embarrassing.”He obeyed me and held onto me as I wrapped my arms under his for balance.By the time we got home, the driver helped me lift him from inside the car to our room, as I no longer had the strength to do so.

Then he began to ramble. “I miss us, I want us to go back to how we were.”

“Everything was perfect before…” he stopped rambling, but his words made my heart melt and got me teary. Did he feel the same thing I felt about our marriage?I yanked off his shoes and socks and also took off his suit and tie.

I got up to freshen up when he pulled me back. “Don’t leave me,” he said, his voice low. I turned. He gazed at me with lust in his eyes and suddenly grabbed my wrist, pulling me toward him. Before I could move an inch, his lips collapsed into mine.

He kissed me gently at first, but his hunger rapidly grew, and the kisses became faster and more aggressive. My tongue found his, and we kissed like that for a while, wet open-mouthed kisses with hot breath as he gently unzipped my gown. His hand began to roam all over my body, and to the strap of my bra, which he yanked off with so much force.

I moaned as he touched me. It’d been so long since he touched me this way, so passionately. Soon, he placed me under him as he climbed over me. His hands traveled down to my thigh and then back to the waistband of my panties. I parted my legs to let him easily pull it off.

A second later, he entered me gently, causing me to let out a soft moan. “Zane…” I called out as he slid continuously into me.He began to glide in so smoothly, slowly moving forward until I had all of him inside me.
He held that position for a while, purposely making himself throb inside me. Then he started going in more quickly like a feral animal, causing his body to slap against mine again and again.

Then he stopped and lay down, and I knew that was my cue. I took him into my mouth as he held my hair up. Then I made my way up to kiss him more.

“Say my name,” I whispered.“Zara..,” he moaned.I froze. I assumed I didn’t hear well until he said it again. “Zara, I want more of you…” He muttered with a lustful smile.

My chest tightened so hard as I swallowed the bile that had risen in my throat. Zara again? What the fuck?!“How dare you call that bitch’s name when making love to me?”He kept smiling at me.

I sighed in frustration, knowing he didn’t make out anything I said.So was the whole sex a lie? He thought he was doing it with Zara? All the things he said that got me teary were for her?Tears began to roll down my cheeks in torrents as I got up and went to the bathroom.

I had a quick shower and came out, slowly wrapping myself in my robe. My body trembled from both rage and sadness. I walked over to the table where I dropped my phone and rang Mason. He picked up on the second ring.

“Hey, Elora,” he answered with a gentle voice. I began to cry as I heard his voice.“Hey, hey, what’s wrong?” he asked, his voice laced with concern.“My hus…my husband moaned her name in bed,” I whispered, my voice trembling.

“What did you say?” he asked, not being able to make out what I said.“My husband moaned her name in bed!”

“Shit. Zara?” Mason asked.“Yes,” I cried.
“I’m going to make her pay, Mason,” I said as I wiped my tears off.

“Don’t send those pictures out yet. It’s too early, and she won’t feel the effect that much.”

“Let’s keep it till she has built her castle tall enough, then we release it and make her world come crumbling down.”

“I’ll know the right time.”

“Wait for my instruction."

Chapter 31

Ridgeview

Zane’s POV

I rubbed my eyes as I woke up. The hangover was nothing like I had ever experienced. I stirred and tossed in bed to gather the strength I needed to get up. But it wasn’t just the hangover I felt. There was emptiness.

My head throbbed as I tossed left and right, the air heavy with the scent of Elora’s perfume. I wiped my face with my hand, groaning softly.

What the hell happened last night?

Pieces of memories from the bar to the house flashed through my mind—the heat at the bar, the alcohol stench, the dragging and lifting, Elora. That’s it. I fucked Elora.

Then my eyes widened.

I briefly sat up. I had called Zara’s name.

My heart began to hammer loudly in my chest. The memory hit me like a punch in my ribs. The moment Elora took me in her, and moaned beneath me, my eyes deceived me, I whispered Zara. Not once but twice.

Shit. Damn it Zane!

I lingered in bed for a bit, unable to shake off the memories and not knowing how I would face Elora. Not that I regret it because Zara is all I want right now, but Elora was still a card I could use if things don’t go my way. I wasn’t in love with Elora, never had been, and now that Zara had come back–powerful, more radiant, and untouchable, Elora felt more and more like a shadow I was too reluctant to chase.

I swung my legs off the bed and made my way to the bathroom, not minding the disappointment Elora must feel. I wasn’t going to apologize, but would move on like I didn’t remember anything. I washed myself, came out of the shower, got dressed for work, and headed out.

I waited for the usual aroma of breakfast to greet me, but there was nothing.

She’s got to be kidding me, I thought.

I got downstairs and saw her finishing off her food without lifting her head to look at me nor recognize my presence. Then Lucas came running towards me.

“Good morning, daddy,” he said with a large grin.

“Good morning, little man,” I patted him on the head and turned back to Elora.

“So am I not having breakfast too?”

She continued what she was doing and didn’t answer.

“Dad, we can share mine!. Take a seat,” Lucas said with a charming smile as he pulled out a chair for me at the dining table.

“Thanks, Lucas.” I sat, just looking at him.

“Dad?” he continued.

“Yes, Lucas,” I answered.

“I made a friend at the office yesterday!” he giggled.

“Oh wow, who was it?” I said, feigning interest, because Lucas made friends with the most random people he would never see again.

“Miss Zara!”

My eyes widened with interest as Elora turned back to glance at both of us.

“Zara?” I asked.

“How did you meet her?” I asked again with keen interest.

“She’s the kind lady who picked up my toy for me when I fell. She also brushed the dust off my clothes.”

I smiled at the imagination of that scene. Zara had always been a sweet woman, caring enough to even take care of her ex-husband’s son.

“Now, you listen to me, Lucas,” Elora interrupted as she pointed at him.

“I don’t want to see you anywhere near that woman again, okay?”

Lucas’ face dimmed, and he gently bowed his head.

“Remember when we talked about monsters? She’s one of them.” Elora said.

“Oh, come on, you don’t have to poison the child’s mind against her.”

Elora glanced at me and rolled her eyes, not saying anything.

“If I see you anywhere around her again, Lucas, you’d go into the dark room. Do you want to go into the dark room?”

Lucas shook his head rapidly with fear in his eyes. The dark room was the empty room in the house with no lights and no form of entertainment. Elora had always used the dark room as punishment for Lucas, even when I was strongly against it, but I had to let her have some form of control as long as I could still use her.

I shook my head and got up in a bid to leave with an empty stomach. There was no point staying here with the air so thick and filled with disdain. Elora pouted in silence as she moved around the kitchen, probably hoping I’d say something about last night or even beg her, but ain’t no way that was going to happen.

I walked out of the house and headed for my car. Kelvin, my right-hand man, was already waiting beside the door where I usually sat. We exchanged greetings and got in. He gave me my tab and a cup of coffee, exactly how I liked it.

“To the Ridgeview site boss?” he asked without looking up.

“Yes,” I muttered as I took a gulp of coffee and leaned back.

“Let me see my investment,” I said with so much fulfillment. He smiled back in response.

Ridgeview.

That was my real future, not just Wesley group. It was my legacy in motion. Something I could easily pass down to Lucas, without demanding much from him like my father did me.

I stared out the windows as we approached the site. Damn! It was a sight to behold. Bulldozers were already clearing parts of the land, and the foundation work was about to start for the first few homes. We have designed it to be homes that would attract the wealthiest of the wealthy. Elite schools, children-friendly parks, dog day-care, and recreational centres. A golf club was also worth considering. It’s going to be a city on its own.

We finally reached there and alighted from the car. The cool morning air filled my lungs, laced with the dust and sweat of my ambitions. This was what real power looked like. I adjusted my suit and kept walking with Kelvin by my side.

“You see that area at the east end?” I said to Kelvin as I pointed in that direction.

“Yes, sir,” he said as he brought out his notepad.

“I have new plans for it. I want high-end boutiques, private hospitals, and plant-based grocery stores. And I want the best brands to be there, not some cheap franchise or budget brand.”

Kelvin nodded and jotted them down.

But as I gave instructions, a strange feeling ran down my spine. I turned back briefly and saw a small image behind a heap of sand. I could’ve sworn someone was watching.

“Kelvin?” I called, narrowing my eyes as I scanned the heap of sand.

“Are any of the workers supposed to be here today?”

“No, sir, it’s just you and me here. I gave instructions that no one must see you until the work is completed. Including the contractors,” he answered.

“Ohh,” I said and looked away from the sand.

Unable to shake the feeling off.

“Send some men to scan the area when we leave.”

“I need to be sure we’ve not been ratted out,” I said, my tone sharp.

We turned back to leave the site when we were done inspecting, but I paused as my phone dinged. It was a video. I clicked it to watch it, and my eyes widened at the sight. My lips parted open as I saw a video of myself and Kelvin on the site.

Someone followed us and had been watching us.

“Find them!” I thundered.

Chapter 32

The Trap Behind The Smile I

Zara’s POV

The morning after our short celebration was just as quiet. I leaned against the marble kitchen counter, sipping my hot chocolate while Leo, who sat across from me, scrolled through his phone. He hadn’t said much all morning but the tension in his jaw betrayed him.

“Done,” he said.

I scanned his face with a raised brow. “Done with what?”

“The bug is ready,” he said, his voice laced with determination.

“Oh, that. I didn’t know we were still doing that,” I took a sip of my hot chocolate.

Leo put his phone down and crossed his arms. “Yeah, I know, but Kelvin will not be with Zane all the time, so we still have to spy on him even when he’s alone. Especially when he is alone,” he emphasized.

“That’s when men like Zane get careless,” he added.

We had planned to plant a bug in Zane’s office or home to collect information. Although it wouldn’t be admissible evidence, it could lead us to know which area to dig in and extract real and admissible evidence that can bring him down.

“So, do you remember your role?” He gazed at me.

I nodded gently. “Yes, I’m all set.” I dropped the empty cup and washed my hands.

“That’s the spirit,” he replied firmly. But he still looked at me like there was something more he wanted to say, but he stopped himself.

Then he reached into his blazer and pulled out a tiny black device, no bigger than a cube. “This is the bug,” he said, placing it carefully on the counter like it was a sacred treasure.

“And this is just the listening device. The other thing you’d be doing is connecting this flash drive to his laptop and installing the program on it, so we also gain access to his emails, calls, browser history, meetings, and financial transfers, all of it. If he’s hiding something he’s not talking about, this will help us find it,” he said as he placed the flash drive beside the bug.

A rush of adrenaline surged through me. “I understand.”

“Zara, Zane mustn’t catch on. If he does, he would take the necessary precautions that would cause our efforts to go down the drain,” he said as he stared deep into my soul.

“I won’t let you down, Leo. Besides, Zane is not as smart as that.”

We both laugh.

“Text me when it’s done. But I’ll be close just in case,” he nodded slowly, and I mouthed a thank you in return.

I picked up the bug and flash drive and put them in my purse as we headed out.

Dressed in a black high-waist skirt and a blue silk blouse that screamed elegance, I walked into Wesley Group headquarters with my chin up high and heels clicking across the floor.

Zane wasn’t expecting me, of course, but he looked up from his desk as I came into his office unannounced. His lips curved into a familiar smile on seeing me.

“Hey, Zara. What are you doing here?”

“I mean, to what do I owe the pleasure?”

I went near the table with a seductive smile on my face, just the way Zane liked it. I leaned into the table and gently placed the bug underneath it. As expected, Zane only returned my smile without any suspicion.

Then I replied to him. “Well, to celebrate my becoming a director, I wanted to take you out to lunch.”

“Like old times,” I said simply, holding his gaze.

He blinked fast with surprise written all over his face. I hoped he wasn’t catching on. But then his expression softened, causing me to exhale the breath I had been holding. It was almost as if he believed this was some sort of reconciliation.

“And while at it, we can catch up,” I added, hoping I wasn’t doing too much. But I knew Zane couldn’t resist nostalgia wrapped in hopes of a new start.

Without saying anything, he grabbed his suit and put it on. “Let’s go to our usual spot,” he said, visibly pleased.

I nodded gently. “Sure, Zane.”

“And take your laptop with you, I don’t intend to keep you away from work totally. We would spend quite a while. You know, as we catch up,”

He hesitated but released a soft smile afterwards.

“Okay, that’s so thoughtful of you, but I promise to give you all my attention.”

Of course, he would do anything to please me just so he could get me back. Typical selfish and greedy Zane.

We went downtown to the popular rooftop Bistro. I made sure we went upstairs to take our regular space first so I could have the table to myself while Zane went downstairs to get our order.

When I was sure he was out of sight, I quickly went over to his seat and opened his laptop.

Shit. Of course, there’s a password. Why didn’t I and Leo think about that?

For a second, I froze. But then instinct kicked in. Leo had told me he had eyes on Zane and knew what he held dearly. His estate project. Ridgeview. I typed it in and clicked Enter.

The screen lit up with a notification that said “access granted”.

I didn’t have time to relish in the victory as Zane could come back at any moment. I quickly inserted the flash drive and downloaded the program onto it.

50%.

70%.

I looked back nervously to be sure he wasn’t coming yet.

90%.

Then I turned and saw him already climbing the stairs.

Shit shit shit.

My heart began to pump loudly in my chest that I couldn’t hear myself breathe.

99%.

He got up already and started approaching our table. He must have seen me in his seat. I instantly pulled out the flash drive when it reached 100%.

He got to our table and handed me my order while looking at his laptop, which was open.

“Uh, Zara? Why were you in my seat and… my laptop?” he glanced at his laptop and back at me.

I smiled wryly. “Oh, it was nothing. I thought I heard a warning sound, so I moved over to check, but the sound came from the next table.”

Thank God there was a laptop beside us to corroborate my claim.

His gaze softened. “Oh, thank you.”

He poured more wine in my glass than was necessary as I dug into my smoky steak. Then he stared at me for a little too long.

“You look beautiful as always,” he said finally.

“Thank you,” I said in a playful tone, sipping the wine.

“Thank you for giving me the chance to finally talk to you,” he added.

I nodded gently in response, giving a smile that didn’t reach my eyes.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about us lately, Zara,” he continued, taking my hand in his.

“And I know you don’t want to hear this, but I sincerely missed you. All those years without you were torture. I was a fool to let you go.”

It took everything in me not to pour the entire wine in my cup on his face and add my saliva when the wine finished, but I had to remind myself I was on a mission.

What the fuck? He missed me? He was a fool to let me go? But he clearly didn’t think that way when he threw me out on the road, leaving me without any luggage or anything to my name.

I let out another fake smile as I wiped my mouth with the napkin provided.

“There is something else I must tell you,” he said softly as he stared deep into my eyes, dropping his cutlery.

“We never really divorced, Zara. The papers were forged.”

I choked on the sip of wine in my mouth. I immediately started coughing as I grabbed the glass of water beside me and downed it in two gulps.

Then I shot him a sharp gaze, my eyes bulging. “What do you mean?”

His smile was calm. Disgustingly calm.

“It means, technically, you’re still Mrs Wesley. My wife.”

Chapter 33

The Trap Behind The Smile III

I blinked not once or twice but continuously.

“What?, I whispered, my voice barely audible.

“It’s just as you heard, Zara. We were never divorced,” he leaned back into his chair comfortably, like he hadn’t just dropped a bomb. “I was also deceived. The lawyer I used turned out to be a fake who was just after quick money.”

I swallowed the bile that was rising in my throat. Did he expect me to be gullible enough to believe this trash? I bit my lip at the thought of the fact that I still had to bear the nonsense he was spitting.

But then my phone dinged. It was a message from Leo.

“We’re in. Mission successful. You can leave now.”

The moment I scanned through the message, I closed my eyes in relief that I didn’t need to bear this anymore. Then, I shot him a burning gaze.

“You must be so miserable to think you can lie about our divorce just to get back with me.”

He blinked fast and looked around, shocked at the fact that I didn’t believe the lie he had cooked up.

“You’re sick. Really sick.”

“You must still think I’m that gullible, ever-believing Zara you exploited years ago, right?”

“I’m not your wife, and I will never be. Not now, not ever.“

“Zara.. believe me, I–” he stuttered as he reached for my hands.

I pulled away immediately, not giving him a chance to complete his lies.

“This was a mistake. I’m never giving you a chance to speak to me again.”

I rose to leave with a smirk tugging at my lips when I was out of his sight.

I walked briskly, my heels clicking against the hard floor. I kept the laughter threatening to come out in me till I got to the car Leo had prepared for me.

The moment I shut the door, I finally let it out. It felt so good to have the upper hand over the ever-controlling Zane.

By the time I arrived at the office, I found Leo in his office and went to him. His eyes were glued to his laptop screen with so much focus that he didn’t notice when I stepped in. But the moment his eyes met mine, his expression changed.

Without any words, he got up and walked over to me and hugged me tightly. I returned the hug with happiness tugging in the pit of my stomach.

“Well done, Zara,” he said as he released me from his grip. “Now, we would be one step ahead of him in every single thing.”

We stared at each other for a little too long, then his phone rang, interrupting the moment.

“Sorry, excuse me.”

I nodded gently.

He excused himself to take the call and returned in two minutes.

“I already started going through his emails before you came in,’’ he said excitedly.

“Oh, great, great,” I nodded. “But can you believe he said we weren’t divorced and I was still…still married to him?” I asked.

Leo’s entire body went stiff.

“What? Do you think he might be telling the truth?”

I laughed softly. “No, that was just Zane trying to play games to win me back. Three years were too much for me to know how Zane looks when he lies.”

Then I looked at Leo deeply.

“But why were you shocked? Are you worried your fiancé is married to another?” I joked.

He reset his face back to the expressionless one and leaned back into his chair.

“Of course not, I’d wish you well and call the alliance off,” he said, avoiding my eyes.

I was sure he didn’t mean that because his reaction already gave him away. I grinned at him widely, making him look at me and return a smile.

Suddenly, it didn’t matter how many more tricks Zane might try to pull off or how many fake papers he had forged. Because this time, I had the upper hand—and I had Leo beside me.
