Chapter 1

She struggled breathe.

Water forced its way into her mouth and nose and her lungs were burning.

She had always dreamt that she was drowning in the ocean. Every night, it claimed her in her sleep, pulling her deeper until she woke up drenched in sweat, breathing heavily, clutching her bedsheet.

But today was different, this wasn’t a dream. She had never imagined how real it would feel.

She didn't have the time to think on how she landed here, her life was at stake!

Her arms thrashed wildly, and her legs kicked furiously against the water. But her petite stature couldn’t defeat the heavy waves pulling her under again and again.

She choked and coughed as she weakly reached out for something, anything, but The density of the water made it hard for her to move forward, her arm met nothing but empty water.

“Help, somebody help…”

She cried out, but the wind carried the word away.

She looked up. “Oh no shitt.”

Another wave was rolling over, heavier than the last. She swam backward, but there was no room for escape.

The wave crashed over her, dragging her under. Her world flipped upside down, dark water. Roaring thunder, and lightning splitting the sky above.

A ship’s horn blared in the distance. She managed to keep her head afloat long enough to see it a ship moving toward her at full speed.

A pale surge of hope rose inside her. With the last of her strength, she pushed herself to the surface.

She waved her hand. “Help!” she screamed.

Another wave rose and slammed into her, forcing her back under. Water rushed into her mouth as she swallowed more than she could fight against.

Her arms slowly lost their strength, her legs growing heavier by the second. For a split second, she saw her mother’s smiling face.

Her mother stretched out a hand.

She was too weak, she had lost almost everything but she wasn’t going to let the ocean win.

She reached out.

And took the hand.

A force pulled her up.

And then, that was it. Exhaustion weighed heavily on her eyelids after struggling against the raging ocean for so long… before darkness finally consumed her.

She blinked slowly,  feeling a sharp poke on her cheek, her hair being tossed about. Slowly, she opened her eyes, blinking against the harsh brightness.

With effort, she pushed herself up, coughing violently as water found its way out of her lungs. A cold breeze brushed against her skin, making her shiver.

She looked around and froze. This wasn’t her village.

She was on a pirate ship.

Rough-looking men surrounded her, their eyes crawling over her, some reaching out as if to touch. She recoiled, fear tightening her chest..how did she end up here?

“Oh great, she’s alive,” one of them muttered, his tone laced with displeasure.

“Shiny long hair… skin smooth like a baby’s… long, feathered lashes… rose-pink lips…” another said, circling her like prey. He leaned closer, sniffing with his lips curved up.

She jerked back, trying to put distance between them, coiling on the corner like a ball.

“Ray, isn’t this the forbidden creature the captain warned us about?” he asked.

“Leslie, she’s a woman, for goodness’ sake,” Ray replied.

“Oh… I’ve never come across this kind of creature before,” Leslie said, reaching toward her breast.

“Stay away from me, you wild man!” she snapped, forcing strength into her voice as she pointed a trembling finger at him.

“Leslie, let her be. Don’t scare the lady.” A man stepped forward and pulled Leslie away.

When her eyes fell on his feet, she noticed one of his legs had been amputated and replaced with a wooden peg. Her gaze rose slowly, scanning the rest of him. He was heavily built, with an overgrown beard she was certain lice would be feasting on.

“What’s your name, girl?” the man asked.

She dared not ignore him, his aura screamed danger. “Emily,” she said, her voice trembling.

“Why did you try to drown yourself in the ocean, Emily?” His nose flared as he spoke.

“I didn’t try to drown myself,” she replied instantly. Then, once again, her gaze drifted across the ocean.

Coughing, she managed, “Where am I?”

She was too weak to understand what was going on. All that filled her mind was how she had ended up here.

She weakly pulled herself up from the floor and moved to the edge of the ship. The vessel was in the middle of nowhere.

“Move out of the way, bitch!” A man carrying a heavy barrel shoved her aside without a second glance.

Emily lost her balance and was shoved to the floor.

“Women… they always bring bad luck,” he sneered.

“Nothing but bad omens to have one on board,” another muttered in agreement.

“We should drop her at the next dock,” the bearded man said. “It’s dangerous keeping her here. Nothing but trouble.”

“Enough chatter, gentlemen,” a cold deep voice cut through sharply. “It’s time to get to work.”

The men turned toward the direction the voice had come from.

“Yes, Captain,” they answered in unison.

The crowd slowly dispersed, their rough bodies parting just enough for a clear path to form. And that was when Emily finally had the chance to see the owner of the voice who had spoken earlier.

She had never seen anyone like him before.

He wasn’t overly handsome in the perfect way stories described men, but there was something about him that pulled attention too easily. Maybe it was the calm look on his face despite the violent storm, or the way he spoke to his men like he already knew the sea would obey him.

Rain dampened his dark hair, the strands pushed carelessly away from his forehead as the wind blew against him. His ocean-blue eyes were steady and sharp, focused more on the waves than the frightened people around him.

He looked older than most of the men on the ship, not by age, but by experience. Like someone who had spent years fighting storms and surviving them.

And somehow, standing there in the middle of all that chaos, he looked completely at ease.

She stood there, staring, unable to look away… until his ocean-blue eyes met hers.

His gaze was sharp, questioning and piercing straight through her.

Her knees weakened.

She quickly turned away, fidgeting with her fingers as heat rushed to her cheeks.

What was this strange feeling suddenly stirring inside her?
