Replacement bride • Runaway bride • Forced marriage
My sister ran away on her wedding day, and I was forced to take her place. I thought it was just a mistake… a way to save my family from embarrassment. But the moment I said “I do,” I realized something was wrong. My husband wasn’t surprised. He wasn’t angry. If anything… he looked like he had been waiting for me. And now I can’t stop wondering—did I really replace my sister, or was I the bride he wanted all along?
Chapter 1
My hands would not stop trembling.
I stood just outside the grand ballroom, trying to steady my breathing. The air was thick with the sweet scent of white roses and vanilla candles. Soft classical music drifted from inside, blending with the low murmur of guests who had come expecting a fairytale wedding.
Everything looked flawless. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting golden light across the room. The long aisle was covered in fresh flower petals, and the elegant arch at the front overflowed with white blooms. It was supposed to be the perfect day.
But it was not mine.
I was only supposed to be the maid of honor. The reliable younger sister who stayed quietly in the background, smiling politely while my older sister, Lila, stood in the spotlight.
That had always been our roles.
Lila was the beautiful one. The confident one. The woman who attracted powerful men like Rick Uber without even trying. And I was... well, I was Eve. The quiet one who handled things behind the scenes.
Until today.
Until Lila disappeared.
The morning had started normally enough. I had spent hours in the bridal suite helping her prepare. I zipped up her breathtaking wedding gown, carefully pinned her long veil into place with trembling fingers because she kept saying she was nervous, and reassured her over and over that she looked perfect. She laughed softly and hugged me, calling me her “lucky charm.”
Then everything fell apart.
Fifteen minutes before the ceremony was supposed to begin, one of the bridesmaids burst into the room, her face pale with panic.
“She’s gone. Lila’s gone!”
At first, no one believed it. We searched everywhere, but there was no sign of her. Her phone had been left behind on the vanity table, still buzzing with unread messages. There was no note. No explanation. Nothing.
Panic spread through my family like wildfire.
My father’s face turned deathly pale as the reality of the situation sank in. My mother clutched the pearls around her neck so tightly I thought they might snap. She kept repeating the same words over and over.
“This cannot be happening. Not today. Not in front of all these people.”
The guests had already begun whispering among themselves. The ceremony music had started playing right on schedule. And Rick Uber was already waiting at the altar.
That was when the pressure shifted to me.
My mother grabbed my arm, her nails digging painfully into my skin.
“Eve, you have to do this,” she whispered urgently, her voice shaking. “For the family. If this wedding falls apart now, we will be humiliated. Your father’s business deals, our reputation, everything we built could collapse. Just walk down the aisle. Say the vows. We will fix it later, I promise.”
I stared at her in disbelief, my heart slamming against my ribs.
“Mom, I cannot marry him. I am not Lila. This is insane!”
“You are the same size,” she said desperately, barely listening to me. “The dress will fit. No one will notice from a distance. Please, darling. Do not make us beg in front of everyone.”
Before I could protest again, hands were suddenly all over me. The bridesmaids and my mother moved with frantic urgency. They unzipped my champagne-colored maid-of-honor dress and quickly slipped me into Lila’s wedding gown. The heavy silk and delicate lace settled against my skin. Someone adjusted the veil over my face, pinning it carefully into my hair. Another person pressed the bouquet of white roses and lilies into my cold hands.
In less than ten minutes, I had been transformed.
I barely recognized myself when I looked in the mirror.
The woman staring back at me looked like a bride. Elegant. Composed. Beautiful, even.
But inside, I was screaming.
This was never supposed to happen.
I had never imagined myself marrying Rick Uber.
He was my sister’s fiancé. A powerful billionaire known for his sharp mind and ruthless business tactics. I had only met him a handful of times during family dinners, where he had always been polite but distant. He barely spoke to me. Why would he? I was only the younger sister.
And now I was about to become his wife.
The music swelled louder, signaling that it was time.
My legs felt weak as I stepped toward the entrance of the aisle. Hundreds of eyes immediately turned toward me. I could feel their curiosity, their admiration, their expectations pressing down on me like an unbearable weight.
At the far end of the aisle stood Rick Uber.
He looked devastatingly handsome in his tailored black tuxedo. Tall, broad-shouldered, and impossibly composed. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and his expression revealed absolutely nothing. Those intense dark eyes found me the second I appeared.
He did not flinch.
He did not look confused or surprised.
If anything, he looked like he had been waiting for me.
My heart raced wildly as I began the long walk down the aisle. Every step felt heavier than the last. The veil swayed softly in front of my face, blurring the guests into shadows.
I wanted to turn around and run.
I wanted to rip the veil off and scream that this was all a mistake. That my sister had disappeared and left me behind to clean up the disaster she created.
But I could not.
My family’s reputation, my father’s business empire, and years of carefully built social standing now rested entirely on my shoulders.
So I kept walking.
I clutched the bouquet so tightly my knuckles turned white.
When I finally reached the altar, Rick extended his hand toward me.
I hesitated for a moment, staring at his steady hand. My fingers were ice cold when I finally placed them in his. His touch was warm. Surprisingly gentle.
“You look beautiful,” he said quietly, his deep voice smooth enough that only I could hear it.
I swallowed hard, fighting the urge to pull away.
I wanted to tell him the truth right then and there. That I was not Lila. That my sister had vanished without warning. That I was only standing here because my family had begged me to save them from humiliation.
But the officiant had already begun speaking.
The ceremony continued as though nothing was wrong.
The words blurred together in my mind. I barely heard the parts about love, loyalty, and commitment. All I could focus on was Rick’s calm presence beside me and the heavy ring he would soon place on my finger.
When it was time for the vows, my voice trembled as I repeated the words.
“I, Lila, take you, Rick…”
I nearly stumbled over my own name, but Rick did not react. He simply watched me with those dark, unreadable eyes.
Then it was his turn.
His voice remained steady and confident as he spoke his vows, never once breaking eye contact with me.
When the officiant asked if I took this man to be my husband, the answer slipped out before I could stop it.
“I do.”
Rick’s lips curved into the faintest smile as he slid the heavy diamond ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly, as though it had been made specifically for me. The cold metal settled against my skin like a seal locking me into this new reality.
And he still did not look surprised.
As the officiant pronounced us husband and wife, applause erupted around us. Rick leaned closer, his breath brushing softly against my ear beneath the veil.
“Welcome to your new life, Eve,” he murmured.
My heart stuttered violently.
He had called me by my real name.
Not Lila’s.
He had known exactly who was walking down that aisle the entire time.
The realization crashed over me so hard it left me breathless. As Rick lifted my veil and looked down at me with that calm, knowing expression, one terrifying thought echoed through my mind.
Did I really replace my sister...
