Chapter 15
Viona POV
Two Years Later
"Why?" I ask myself. The future I was trying so hard to run away from has come back to haunt me. I cried my eyes out yesterday after the seer visited the pack. Even in my past, it was the same day and obviously the same reason, or am I doomed to die?
I watched from my window as the seer walked out of the pack, followed by the elders, who seemed to be asking questions.
Not long after, my mom entered my room. She first sat beside me, supporting her bulging belly. First, she was pregnant again for my father, something that never happened in my past. From this, I knew that the future was slowly changing, but my heart was shattered when the seer visited again two days after my 10th birthday.
"Dear..." she stammered, unsure of how to say it.
"Mm... My dear... You know your dad would take care of it, right?" She tried her best, but her eyes gave her away; they had doubts in them. She knew my dad could do nothing about it.
I just smiled not to worry her too much, as a slight negative emotion can affect the fetus. She calmly took my hand and gently placed it on her belly. I could feel a slight movement; it was a wonderful experience. A warm smile suddenly surfaced even in my heart of despair.
"He's trying to cheer you up," she said.
"Mmm..." I nodded happily; it moved again, this time with a little more force.
My mother hissed in pain. I understood her; I was also once pregnant myself. I could understand the pain she felt. It wasn't severe, but it still hurt. My hands subconsciously went to massage her lower back. During my pregnancy, it was my sore spot and was the center of every painful session. Sure enough, my mother sighed in relief.
"Thank you, sweetie," she said and kissed my forehead. "I'll go talk to your dad." She left me alone.
The moment she stepped out, the despair I felt multiplied tenfold. Tears streamed down my eyes about the impending suffering I have to endure.
Now I thought of it: the seer is a messenger of the goddess herself. If anyone is defiled, it is the goddess being defiled, and it is nothing short of a death penalty. My father is standing against this; it's not a wise decision, especially not now that my mother is to give birth soon.
My father entered my room with a downcast expression. I already knew this outcome, but I can't deny the fact that I had a little hope for a different outcome.
"I'm sorry," he said, affirming my thoughts.
"It's okay, Dad. At least on the bright side, we're the first to know about this engagement, even before the Royals. We can use this to our advantage."
"How so?" my father asked.
"We can set it on our terms," I replied. The only thing we have is to set conditions. As long as the Royals don't yet know of the engagement, it gives us a head start.
In my last life, I could use this idea, as I was immediately sold over so my uncle could completely take charge of the pack. With the only condition being, I shouldn't die or be killed without the approval of the Levites, which made my life even worse than death.
Now, with the help of my father, terms and conditions were made before any alliances could be formed. After the contract was finished, my dad sent out invitations as the old seer was already on his way to the Royals. If we wasted time and sent out invitations first, we would have to play by their rules, forsaking our plans.
As expected, before the next day, the whole wolf kind knew of the engagement between the two leading packs, coming as one. And we, on the other hand, were prepared as our invitation went to every pack, both major and minor, before the next day.
All the Alphas first had a gathering before the official day of the announcement.
Finally, the Day
After everyone gathered, the hall was magnificently decorated. After everyone had gathered, we waited for the arrival of the main stars of the night: the fifteen-year-old son of the Alpha of the Royals and the ten-year-old daughter of the Alpha of the Levites.
As we both arrived at the center of the hall, I noticed Nicolas seemingly distracted. I couldn't help but notice how he seemed to be trying to get my attention since the pack gathered seven years ago. I at least expected him to show a little anticipation, but his distracted look puzzled me, not to even talk of my uncle Morgan, who looked so frustrated that the veins on his head could clearly be seen, and Mirage, who always looked like he didn't want to be here.
"The goddess blesses this occasion. Today we are gathered here to witness the engagement between our two major packs. Together, we would prevail against the witches, vampires, and humans combined. The goddess would lend us her strength..." While the seer was saying the prayers, I followed Nicolas' gaze, who seemed distracted the whole time. Not so surprisingly, I felt a sting in my chest.
It was Flora in the crowd; he could even spot her so accurately. Her eyes held unshed tears. I couldn't wait to see those tears fall. Sure enough, the moment I held Nick by the arm, she immediately pushed through the crowd and ran away crying.
Nick was about to go after her but was held back by me as I pretended to have no idea what was going on. After the announcement was over, everyone cheered and clapped, but Nick was nowhere to be found, just like in my past life. He was off somewhere consoling Flora, who was crying her eyes out in his arms.
I had to admit, I felt hurt, but I knew it was not my heart aching, but my memories replaying in my head, giving me the same feeling of heartbreak.
I was on my way to my room; I'm going to bed.
"I guess your partner isn't here?" My voice sounded from the side of the corridor. I turned sharply, frightened. I didn't hear any footsteps until now, nor did I get his scent.
"What exactly are you?" He was already leaving but stopped at my question. He turned towards me, and in the blink of an eye, I was smashed into the pillar, and a deep crack formed on it.
He was choking me. My vision quickly became blurry. But I didn't pass out before he let me go. I was gasping for air the moment my lungs were free.
"Don't ever ask that question again, okay?" I couldn't describe the emotions I felt; it was strange and thrilling. I didn't dislike it, but it scared me. Before I could realize myself, he was already at a distance. I then noticed Lilah; the look of disgust she gave me was no different from my past life.
I stumbled back to my room. From the wall, I could hear whispers; they were low, and I couldn't figure out what they were saying. I stepped out and went to the corner, hoping to hear more, but all I could hear was sobbing and Nick's reassuring voice, like he was calming a child.
I hated him for this, only using that voice for her and never his mate, but now, I don't give a damn. He is and would remind me of my past.
I returned to my room and was about to close the window when I noticed the beautiful moonlight penetrating through the window, adding a magnificent glow to my room. I happily left it open and fell asleep on my bedside couch. I felt someone lift me to my bed, but I couldn't open my eyes; they were tightly shut in slumber.
