His to Claim: Alpha Zeke - Chapter 44

Chapter 44

ZEKE'S POV

"Layla," Cecelia breathed while looking at me with shock. "She really did this?"

"Apparently," I said while my voice came out harsh. "Brock has proof."

"What about Theseus?" I asked Marcus.

"Gone," Marcus said while his jaw clenched. "He fled before we breached. His pack is claiming he acted without their knowledge or approval."

"They're lying," I said flatly. "But we'll deal with that later. Right now I need a medical transport for Golden."

"Already called," Marcus confirmed. "Helicopter will be here in ten minutes."

I carefully lifted Golden while keeping one hand pressed to his chest the whole time. He was so light while my son barely weighed anything in my arms. His head rolled against my shoulder while the blue light under his skin pulsed weakly.

Cecelia stayed pressed to my other side while one of her hands rested on Golden's back. The three of us connected through touch while our family bond was finally complete even under these terrible circumstances.

We moved through the warehouse while my team had cleared out all of Theseus's guards. Bodies lay scattered while I stepped over them without looking. They'd threatened my son which meant they got exactly what they deserved.

Outside the helicopter was landing while its blades kicked up dust and debris. I climbed in carefully with Golden while Cecelia scrambled in behind me. The pack doctor was already inside while he immediately started checking Golden's vital signs.

"How long has he been like this?" the doctor asked while hooking Golden up to portable monitors.

"We don't know exactly," I said. "But Fatima said they were trying to extract his magic which triggered the premature emergence."

The doctor's face went grim while he checked the readings. "His body is fighting the emergence but losing. You'll need to maintain constant physical contact for at least the next seventy two hours to keep him stable."

"I'm not letting go of him," I promised while my hand stayed firm on Golden's chest.

Cecelia took Golden's small hand in hers while completing the circuit between all three of us. Through the bonds connecting us I felt Golden's life force flickering like a candle in the wind. But my Alpha essence was feeding into him while keeping that flame from going out.

The helicopter lifted off while carrying us away from the warehouse. Below I could see my team loading Brock and other prisoners into vehicles. Marcus was coordinating the cleanup while making sure every piece of evidence was collected.

"Layla's been arrested," Marcus's voice came through my earpiece. "She tried to run when she heard we'd found Golden but we caught her at the border."

Good, I thought while my rage toward her was ice cold and deadly. She would pay for every second of fear she'd caused while I would personally make sure of it.

But right now none of that mattered while my son fought for his life in my arms. Golden whimpered in his sleep while the blue light flared brighter for a second before dimming again. I pushed more essence into him while willing my strength to become his.

"Hold on buddy," I whispered while pressing a kiss to his sweaty forehead. "Just hold on a little longer."

Cecelia's hand tightened around Golden's while through our mate bond I felt her desperate hope. We'd found him alive which was more than we'd dared hope for sometimes. Now we just had to keep him that way while getting him the medical help he needed.

The flight to the pack hospital felt endless while every minute stretched into hours. Golden's condition stayed critical but stable while my constant essence kept his wolf from fully emerging. The doctor monitored his vitals while occasionally injecting medicine to help support his struggling body.

Finally the hospital came into view while we landed on the roof pad. Medical staff rushed out with a gurney while the doctor shouted orders. I refused to let go of Golden while walking beside the gurney as they wheeled him inside. Cecelia stayed on the other side while both of us maintained contact with our son.

They rushed us to intensive care while the room was set up for long term monitoring. Machines beeped while nurses moved around efficiently getting everything ready. The head doctor examined Golden while his expression was serious.

"The next seventy two hours are critical," he explained. "The Alpha essence is suppressing the emergence but his body is under extreme stress. We need to monitor him constantly while being ready to intervene if things get worse."

"What happens after seventy two hours?" Cecelia asked.

"If we can keep him stable that long, his body should adjust to having his father's essence present," the doctor said. "Then we can work on a long term treatment plan to prevent emergence until he's old enough to survive it safely."

"How long is that?" I asked.

"At least ten years," the doctor replied. "He won't be able to have his first shift until after puberty which means suppressing his wolf until then."

Ten years of keeping Golden's wolf controlled while it was a long time but it was better than the alternative of losing him completely. I would do whatever it took while my son deserved the chance to grow up and live a full life.

"We'll do whatever is necessary," I said while my Alpha voice made it clear this wasn't up for debate.

The doctor nodded while then he and the nurses left us alone. The room was quiet except for the beeping monitors while Golden lay small and pale in the hospital bed. I sat in the chair beside him while keeping my hand pressed to his chest. Cecelia sat on the other side while holding his small hand in both of hers.

Cecelia's POV

The hospital room was quiet except for the machines beeping while tracking Golden's heartbeat. I sat on one side of his bed while Zeke sat on the other with his hand pressed to Golden's chest. We'd been here for hours already while Golden stayed unconscious except for brief moments.

The doctor said the next few days were critical while Zeke's Alpha essence was the only thing keeping Golden's wolf from emerging too early. My baby's small body was fighting a battle it was too young to win while all I could do was sit here holding his hand.

Golden's eyes moved under his closed lids while I wondered what he was dreaming about. Was he scared? Did he remember being taken? The thought of him being terrified while I couldn't reach him made my chest hurt so bad I could barely breathe.

Then his eyes fluttered open while I sat up straighter immediately. He blinked slowly while looking confused about where he was. His eyes moved around the room taking in the machines and the hospital bed before finally landing on me.

"Mama?" his small voice was rough like his throat hurt.

I broke down completely while tears poured down my face. "Yes baby, it's mama," I said while smoothing his curly hair back from his forehead. "You're safe now, I promise you're safe."

"Where am I?" Golden asked while his bottom lip trembled like he might cry.

"You're in a hospital," I explained while trying to keep my voice calm even though I was falling apart inside. "Some bad people took you but we found you and now you're getting better."

Golden's eyes filled with tears while he looked so small and scared in the big hospital bed. "I want to go home."

"I know sweetie," I said while more of my own tears fell. "Soon, I promise. You just need to rest and get strong first."

Golden's eyes moved past me while landing on Zeke. He stared at the man on the other side of his bed while confusion crossed his little face. "Who's that?"

I looked at Zeke while seeing his expression crack with emotion. His eyes got shiny with tears while his jaw was tight like he was trying not to break down. He cleared his throat before speaking.

"I'm your father," Zeke said while his voice came out rough. "My name is Zeke."

Golden stared at him while processing this information. "My daddy?"

"Yes," Zeke said while a tear escaped down his cheek. "I'm your daddy."

"Why haven't I met you before?" Golden asked while his innocent question made both Zeke and me flinch.

"That's complicated buddy," Zeke said while struggling to find the right words. "But I'm here now and I'm not going anywhere."

Golden looked between us while his small face was serious as he thought about this. "Okay," he finally said while accepting it with the simple trust that children have. "I always wanted a daddy like the other kids."

That simple statement destroyed me while I had to look away so Golden wouldn't see me crying harder. Zeke made a sound like he'd been punched while through our bond I felt his heart breaking and healing at the same time.

"Well now you have one," Zeke managed to say while his thumb rubbed gentle circles on Golden's chest. "And I'm never leaving you."

Golden's eyes were already closing again while the effort of staying awake was too much. "Love you mama," he mumbled while drifting back to sleep.

"I love you too baby," I whispered while pressing a kiss to his forehead. "So much."

I looked up at Zeke while we stared at each other over our son's sleeping body. His face was wet with tears while mine probably looked the same. Through the bond I felt everything he was feeling while the love and regret and determination all mixed together.

"He's perfect," Zeke said quietly.

"He is," I agreed while my hand smoothed Golden's hair again just to touch him.

The next forty eight hours passed in a blur while time moved both too fast and too slow. Zeke never left Golden's bedside while he kept his hand on our son's chest the entire time. Even when he dozed off in the chair his hand stayed in place pushing Alpha essence into Golden to keep him stable.

I watched them together during Golden's brief awake periods while seeing a side of Zeke I'd never witnessed during our marriage. He was so gentle with Golden while his big hands were careful when touching our small son. His voice went soft when he talked while telling Golden stories about the pack and what his life would be like here.

"You'll go to school with other wolf children," Zeke explained during one of Golden's more alert moments. "And when you're older I'll teach you how to be strong and brave like an Alpha."

"Will I be an Alpha?" Golden asked while his eyes were wide with interest.

"You already are," Zeke said while pride filled his voice. "You're my son which makes you an Alpha prince."

"Like in the stories?" Golden's face lit up with excitement.

"Exactly like in the stories," Zeke confirmed while a small smile crossed his tired face. "Except better because this is real."

I sat in the other chair while just listening to them talk. Seeing Zeke fall in love with our son right in front of me made my heart ache while I remembered why I'd fallen for him in the first place. Under all his walls and fear he was a good man who cared deeply when he let himself.

"You should rest," I said to Zeke after Golden fell asleep again. "I can maintain contact for a while."

"No," Zeke said immediately while shaking his head. "The doctor said my Alpha essence specifically is what Golden needs. Your touch helps comfort him but mine is what's keeping his wolf suppressed."

"You're exhausted," I pointed out while seeing the dark circles under his eyes. "You haven't really slept in two days."

"I'll sleep when Golden is stable," Zeke said while his stubborn protectiveness reminded me so much of how he used to be. "Right now he needs me more than I need rest."

Chapter 45

CECELIA'S POV

I didn't argue while knowing he wouldn't change his mind anyway. Instead I just stayed close while taking turns with Zeke sleeping in short bursts. When I was awake I watched them both while my heart felt too full and too broken at the same time.

During one of my shifts staying awake, I looked at Zeke asleep in his chair with his hand still pressed to Golden's chest. His large hand completely covered Golden's small torso while the size difference was almost funny. But seeing them connected like that while father and son bound together, made something settle in my chest that had been restless for three years.

I never stopped loving him while I realized with sudden clarity. I'd been angry and hurt and determined to move on but under all that I still loved Zeke with the same intensity I had during our marriage. Maybe even more now while seeing him with Golden showed me the man he could be when he let his walls down.

The thought scared me while I didn't know if I was ready to admit that out loud. But sitting there in the quiet hospital room watching my family sleep, I couldn't deny the truth anymore.

On the second day, Marcus came by with updates that made my blood boil. He knocked quietly before entering while his face was grim with whatever news he brought.

"Layla's been arrested," Marcus said while keeping his voice low so he wouldn't wake Golden. "She's being held in detention awaiting trial."

My hands clenched into fists while rage flooded through me hot and violent. "Good," I said while my voice came out hard. "What else?"

"Brock is talking," Marcus continued. "He's giving us everything including proof that Layla orchestrated your fake death three years ago."

The room spun while I processed what he'd just said. "What?"

"Layla paid the guards who were supposed to protect you to instead help stage your death," Marcus explained while looking uncomfortable. "She wanted you separated from Zeke so she could have him."

I stood up so fast my chair scraped loudly against the floor. "That bitch," I said while my voice rose. "She destroyed my entire life, separated me from Zeke, made me raise Golden alone for three years, all because she wanted something she could never have."

"Cecelia," Zeke's voice was calm but firm. "Sit down."

"No," I said while pacing the small room. "I need to see her. I need to look her in the face and ask her why she thought she had the right to destroy everything."

"You're not going anywhere," Zeke said while standing up though his hand stayed on Golden. "Golden needs both of us here."

"Golden is stable right now," I argued while anger made me reckless. "I'll just be gone for an hour to confront that woman."

"No," Zeke moved to block my path to the door. "Layla will be punished through proper channels. You don't need to give her the satisfaction of seeing how much she hurt you."

"She kidnapped our son," I shouted while not caring if I woke Golden. "She deserves more than proper channels, she deserves to suffer like she made us suffer."

"And she will," Zeke said while his hands came up to hold my face. "I promise you Cecelia, Layla will pay for everything she did. But you confronting her now while you're emotional won't help anyone."

"I don't care," I said while trying to pull away but his grip was firm. "She needs to know what she did, she needs to hear from me how much damage she caused."

"She knows," Zeke said while his thumbs wiped away the angry tears on my cheeks. "Trust me, she knows exactly what she did."

I struggled against his hold while screaming things that didn't even make sense. All the rage and hurt from three years came pouring out while I wanted Layla to feel a fraction of the pain she'd caused. Zeke just held me through it while letting me rage against him until I ran out of energy.

Finally I broke down crying while all the fight drained out of me. Zeke pulled me against his chest while one hand rubbed my back as I sobbed into his shirt. Through our bond I felt his own rage while he was just as angry as me but controlling it better.

"She'll pay," Zeke promised while his voice was cold with certainty. "I swear to you Cecelia, Layla will suffer consequences for every ounce of pain she caused our family."

"It's not enough," I cried while my hands fisted in his shirt. "Nothing will ever be enough to make up for what she did."

"I know," Zeke said while just holding me tighter. "But it's what we have."

Marcus cleared his throat uncomfortably while he was still standing near the door. "There's also the matter of Cameron," he said carefully. "He's been placed with pack relatives temporarily while we figure out permanent arrangements."

"Cameron is innocent in this," I said while pulling back from Zeke to wipe my face. "Whatever happens to Layla, her son shouldn't suffer for her choices."

"Agreed," Zeke said while looking relieved that I wasn't arguing about that. "We'll make sure Cameron is cared for properly."

Marcus nodded while then he left us alone again. I went back to my chair beside Golden's bed while feeling exhausted from the emotional outburst. Zeke returned to his spot while his hand automatically going back to Golden's chest.

We sat in silence for a while while just being near each other and our son. Through the bond I felt Zeke's steady presence while he was my anchor keeping me from flying apart completely.

On the third day, Golden woke up more alert than he'd been since we found him. His eyes were clearer while he looked around the room with curiosity instead of confusion.

"Hi mama," he said while his voice was stronger. "Hi daddy."

Hearing him call Zeke daddy so naturally made my throat tight while Golden had accepted his father completely in just three days.

"Hi baby," I said while squeezing his hand gently. "How do you feel?"

"Tired," Golden admitted while his little face scrunched up. "And my tummy hurts."

"That's normal," Zeke said while his free hand smoothed Golden's hair back. "You've been very sick but you're getting better."

"What happened to me?" Golden asked while looking between us. "I remember bad people and being scared but then it's all fuzzy."

Zeke and I exchanged glances while we'd known this conversation was coming but hadn't figured out how to explain it yet. How did you tell a three year old that he was kidnapped for his magic?

"Some bad people took you," I started carefully. "They wanted to hurt you but your daddy and I found you and brought you here to get better."

"Why did they want to hurt me?" Golden asked while his eyes filled with fear. "What did I do wrong?"

"Nothing," Zeke said firmly while his voice held Alpha authority even speaking to a child. "You did nothing wrong. Those people made bad choices and they're being punished for it."

"Are they gonna come back?" Golden's bottom lip trembled while he looked scared.

"No," I promised while leaning closer. "They can't come back because your daddy and his warriors caught them. You're safe now."

Golden thought about this while his small face was serious. "You're really my daddy?" he asked Zeke.

"I really am," Zeke confirmed while emotion made his voice rough.

"Where were you before?" Golden asked while the innocent question made Zeke flinch. "Mama said you had to be away but why?"

Zeke looked at me for help while I could see him struggling with how to answer. "Your daddy didn't know about you," I explained gently. "I had to leave before you were born which meant daddy didn't get to meet you until now."

"Why did you have to leave?" Golden asked me while his questions were endless like always.

"It's complicated sweetie," I said while not wanting to explain adult problems to a three year old. "But the important thing is we're all together now."

"Are we a family?" Golden asked while looking between us with hope in his eyes.

The question hung in the air while I saw Zeke's expression shift into something raw and vulnerable. Our eyes met over Golden's body while the bond between us pulsed with everything unspoken.

"Yes," Zeke said while his hand found mine across Golden's chest. "We're a family."

"Forever?" Golden pressed while he wanted to be sure.

"Forever," Zeke promised while squeezing my hand.

Golden smiled while it was the first real smile I'd seen from him since the kidnapping. "Good," he said while his eyes were already closing again. "I always wanted a family."

He fell asleep while Zeke and I stayed frozen with our hands clasped over our son's body. The simple acceptance in Golden's face broke down the last of my walls while I couldn't pretend anymore that I didn't want this.

I wanted us to be a family while I wanted Zeke in my life and in Golden's life. I wanted what we should have had from the beginning while our son deserved to have both his parents together.

Zeke was looking at me while hope and fear mixed in his expression. Through the bond I felt him waiting for me to say something, to confirm or deny what Golden had just asked for.

"We should talk," I said quietly while my heart was beating hard. "About what happens after Golden is released."

"Okay," Zeke agreed while his thumb rubbed across my knuckles. "What do you want to happen?"

I looked down at our joined hands while thinking about how to put my feelings into words. "I want to try," I finally said while looking back up at him. "I want us to try being a real family, not just for Golden but for us too."

Zeke's face transformed while hope replaced the fear in his eyes. "Are you sure? Because I need to know you're serious before I let myself believe this is real."

"I'm sure," I said while meaning it completely. "I never stopped loving you Zeke. I was angry and hurt but under all that I still loved you. And seeing you with Golden these past few days, seeing how much you already love him, it reminded me why I fell for you in the first place."

"Cecelia," Zeke breathed while his eyes got shiny with tears. "I love you. I never stopped loving you even when I was too stupid to admit it."

"I know," I said while feeling it through our bond. "And I love you too."

We stared at each other while our son slept peacefully between us. The bond hummed with contentment while everything that had been broken between us was finally starting to heal. We had a long way to go still while trust would take time to rebuild completely. But we were committed now while both of us wanted this family unit with desperate intensity.

Golden stirred slightly while making a small sound in his sleep. Both Zeke and I immediately looked at him while our attention going right back to our son. But our hands stayed clasped while neither of us wanted to let go of that connection.

This was my family while broken and healing but finally complete. And I would do whatever it took to make sure we stayed together this time.

Chapter 46

Zeke's POV

Golden had been stable for twenty four hours while the doctor said Cecelia could maintain contact with him for short periods now. Her touch wouldn't suppress the wolf emergence like mine did but it would keep Golden calm and comfortable while I handled pack business that couldn't wait any longer.

"Are you sure about this?" Cecelia asked while looking nervous about being left alone with Golden even though the doctor and nurses were right outside.

"You'll be fine," I assured her while leaning down to kiss her forehead. "Just keep your hand on his chest like I've been doing. If anything changes the monitors will alert the medical staff immediately."

"How long will you be gone?" she asked while her hand replaced mine on Golden's small chest.

"A few hours at most," I said while hating to leave them but knowing this couldn't be put off. "I need to handle Layla's interrogation personally."

Cecelia's expression hardened while anger flashed in her eyes at Layla's name. "Make her suffer," she said quietly.

"I will," I promised while meaning every word.

I left the hospital room while my wolf was already pushing forward wanting blood. Layla had threatened my son, manipulated my life, destroyed my marriage, all because of some twisted obsession. She would pay for every bit of damage she'd caused.

The pack detention center was underground below the main pack house while it was designed to hold even the strongest wolves. Guards snapped to attention when I entered while they could probably feel the rage rolling off me in waves.

"Where is she?" I asked the head guard.

"Cell three," he replied while handing me the keys. "She's been asking to see you."

Of course she had while Layla probably thought she could talk her way out of this like she'd talked her way into my trust for years. But I was done listening to her lies.

I walked down the hallway while my footsteps echoed off the concrete walls. Cell three was at the end while I could see Layla sitting on the bench inside looking defiant despite being locked up.

She stood when she saw me while smoothing down her clothes like she was preparing for a social visit instead of an interrogation. "Zeke, finally," she said while her voice held relief. "I knew you'd come once you heard my side of things."

I unlocked the cell but didn't step inside while I didn't trust myself to be in an enclosed space with her right now. "Start talking," I said while my voice came out cold and hard. "And don't bother lying because we have evidence of everything."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Layla said while trying to look confused. "Whatever Brock told you, he's lying to save himself."

"Brock has receipts of payments you made to him," I said while watching her face carefully. "Bank transfers, text messages, all of it proving you paid him to kidnap Golden."

Her expression flickered while the false confusion slipped for just a second. "That's not what happened."

"Then tell me what did happen," I demanded while my hands clenched into fists at my sides. "Because from where I'm standing, you orchestrated the kidnapping of my three year old son."

"I never wanted him hurt," Layla said while her voice rose defensively. "I just wanted access to his magic."

The casual admission made my blood run cold while she'd just confessed without even realizing it. "You wanted access to his magic," I repeated slowly. "So you hired people to kidnap a child."

"It wasn't supposed to be like this," Layla said while she was starting to panic now. "Brock said the extraction would be painless, that Golden wouldn't even remember it."

"The extraction almost killed him," I said while my wolf snarled wanting to tear her apart. "His body is fighting premature wolf emergence because of what you did."

Layla's face went pale while she sat back down on the bench. "I didn't know that would happen."

"You didn't care what would happen," I corrected while stepping into the cell now because I needed her to see my face when I said this. "You cared about getting power you thought you could use to make me want you."

"I did it for us," Layla insisted while tears started falling. "If I had that kind of magic you would finally see me as an equal. You would finally love me the way you loved her."

"I never loved you," I said flatly while the words were harsh but true. "I cared about you as a friend but I never loved you romantically. And you kidnapping my son just proved I was right to keep that distance."

"You loved me once," Layla argued while she was crying harder now. "Before Cecelia came along we were perfect together."

"We were never together," I said while my patience was running out. "That was all in your head Layla. I never gave you any indication I wanted more than friendship."

"You slept with me," she shot back while anger replaced her tears.

"Once, when we were both drunk after Cecelia supposedly died," I said while that night was fuzzy in my memory but I remembered enough. "That didn't mean anything beyond two people seeking comfort in the wrong way."

"It meant something to me," Layla said while her voice dropped to something bitter. "But then you pushed me away like I was nothing."

"Because you were using my grief to try and manipulate me into a relationship I didn't want," I said while finally understanding what had happened. "You thought if you got pregnant it would trap me."

Layla's face told me I was right while she looked away unable to meet my eyes. "I thought if we had a child together you'd stay with me."

"Except Cameron isn't my child," I said while pulling out the DNA test results Marcus had rushed through this morning. "Robert is his biological father."

Layla's mouth opened and closed while she searched for something to say. "How did you find out?"

"Does it matter?" I asked while tossing the papers at her feet. "You lied about him being mine for three years. You let me raise a child who wasn't mine while my actual son was being hidden away because you destroyed my marriage to his mother."

"I didn't destroy your marriage," Layla said while trying to redirect blame. "You destroyed it yourself by rejecting Cecelia."

"Because you manipulated the situation," I said while Marcus had shown me evidence of that too. "You paid the guards who were supposed to protect Cecelia to make it look like she died."

Layla went very still while I could see her calculating what I knew versus what she could still deny. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"We have their confessions," I said while my voice dropped into Alpha command. "They told us everything. How you paid them to stage Cecelia's death, how you helped them create the fake evidence, all of it."

"Fine," Layla said while her defiance crumbled completely. "Yes, I arranged for Cecelia to disappear. She was in the way and I needed her gone so you would finally see me."

"You destroyed three years of my life," I said while my wolf was howling for her blood. "Three years I could have spent with my mate and my son but instead I was mourning a woman who wasn't even dead because you couldn't accept that I didn't want you."

"I loved you," Layla screamed while standing up to face me. "I loved you for years while watching you pine after someone who didn't even want you back. Then you got forced into marriage with her and suddenly you were in love? That wasn't fair."

"Life isn't fair," I said coldly. "But that didn't give you the right to play god with other people's lives."

"I was trying to fix things," Layla insisted while she actually believed her own twisted logic. "If I had Golden's magic I could have made everything right."

"Nothing about this is right," I said while turning toward the cell door because I couldn't look at her anymore. "You're delusional if you think kidnapping a child would ever end well for you."

"Wait," Layla called while I heard her move toward me. "What about Cameron? What happens to him?"

I stopped while turning back to face her. "Cameron will be placed with his actual father Robert once we confirm paternity through DNA testing."

"No," Layla said while panic filled her voice. "You can't give him to Robert, Cameron barely knows him."

"Whose fault is that?" I asked while no sympathy in my tone. "You kept Robert away from his own son while lying to me about Cameron being mine. You made this bed so now you get to lie in it."

"Please Zeke," Layla begged while reaching through the bars toward me. "I know I messed up but Cameron is innocent in this. Don't punish him for my mistakes."

"I'm not punishing him," I said while stepping back so she couldn't touch me. "I'm making sure he grows up with his real father instead of the man his mother tricked into raising him."

The truth of that statement hit me while I'd spent three years bonding with Cameron thinking he was my son. I'd read him bedtime stories, taught him to throw a ball, been there for his nightmares. And none of it had been real because Cameron wasn't mine.

But the strange thing was I didn't feel as devastated as I should. My immediate reaction had been relief that my actual son Golden was safe rather than grief over losing Cameron. Maybe I'd known on some level that something was off while the bond between Cameron and me never felt as strong as it should have.

"Did Robert know about the kidnapping?" I asked while needing to know if Cameron's real father was involved.

"No," Layla said while shaking her head quickly. "Robert had nothing to do with Golden. He only came around to see Cameron because I finally told him the truth about paternity."

So the Robert mystery was separate from the kidnapping while Layla had kept those two manipulations compartmentalized. The realization that she'd been juggling multiple lies made me feel sick while I couldn't believe I'd ever trusted this woman.

Marcus appeared at the end of the hallway while carrying a folder of documents. "Alpha, I have the financial records you requested."

I left Layla's cell while locking it behind me. She called after me but I ignored her while walking to meet Marcus halfway down the corridor.

"What did you find?" I asked while taking the folder from him.

"Bank transfers from Layla's account to Brock, Theseus, and Fatima," Marcus said while pointing to highlighted sections. "The dates match up with when the kidnapping was being planned. She also rented the warehouse where we found Golden using a fake company name but the payment traced back to her personal account."

"So we have her on conspiracy, kidnapping, child endangerment, and treason against the Alpha's family," I said while reviewing the evidence.

"Plus the fake death situation from three years ago," Marcus added. "The guards she paid have signed statements admitting their involvement in exchange for reduced sentences."

"Good," I said while closing the folder. "Call an emergency council meeting for tomorrow morning. I want Layla formally charged and sentenced as soon as possible."

"Already scheduled," Marcus confirmed. "The council members have been briefed on the evidence so this should be straightforward."

I nodded while heading for the exit. "I need to get back to the hospital. Cecelia's alone with Golden."

"How is he doing?" Marcus asked while falling into step beside me.

"Better," I said while feeling the bond between Golden and me humming in the background. "The doctor thinks he'll make a full recovery but it's going to take time."

"That's good to hear," Marcus said. "The pack has been asking about him, wondering when they'll get to meet the Alpha's son."

"Soon," I promised while thinking about introducing Golden to the pack properly. "Once he's strong enough to handle that kind of attention."

Chapter 47

We reached the main level while I headed for my vehicle. The drive back to the hospital gave me time to process everything Layla had confessed. The depths of her delusion and manipulation were staggering while I couldn't believe I'd missed the signs for so long.

But dwelling on that wouldn't help anyone while I needed to focus on the future with Cecelia and Golden instead of the past Layla had poisoned.

The next morning I stood before the pack council while Layla was brought in wearing restraints. She looked smaller somehow while all her defiance from yesterday was gone. The council members watched her with expressions ranging from disgust to disappointment while many had known her for years.

"Layla Winters, you stand accused of conspiracy to kidnap, child endangerment, and treason against the Alpha's family," the head councilman read from the formal charges. "How do you plead?"

"Guilty," Layla said quietly while not looking at anyone.

Murmurs went through the council while they'd expected her to fight the charges. But confronted with overwhelming evidence Layla had apparently decided to accept responsibility.

"The evidence shows you orchestrated the kidnapping of the Alpha's three year old son Golden," the councilman continued. "You paid co-conspirators to abduct the child and attempt extraction of his magical abilities. This extraction resulted in life threatening medical complications. Do you deny these facts?"

"No," Layla said while her voice barely above a whisper.

"You also stand accused of orchestrating the fake death of Cecelia Blackwood three years ago," the councilman said while reading from another document. "Paying guards to help stage her disappearance in order to separate her from the Alpha. Do you deny this?"

"No," Layla repeated.

The council exchanged glances while the admission of guilt made the proceedings simpler but also more damning. Under pack law, crimes against an Alpha's child were among the most serious offenses possible while punishment could include execution.

"Does anyone wish to speak on the defendant's behalf?" the councilman asked while looking around the room.

Silence while no one moved to defend Layla. Even her closest friends stayed quiet while they couldn't support what she'd done.

"Does the prosecution wish to present testimony?" the councilman asked while looking at me.

"Yes," I said while standing. "I call Cecelia Blackwood to testify."

The doors opened while Cecelia walked in wearing a simple dress with her hair pulled back. She looked composed while I could feel through our bond that she was nervous. But her head stayed high as she moved to stand before the council.

"State your name for the record," the councilman said.

"Cecelia Blackwood, former Luna of this pack," she said clearly.

"Please tell the council about your experiences related to these charges," the councilman prompted.

Cecelia took a breath while organizing her thoughts. "Three years ago I was forced to leave this pack while believing my mate had rejected me. I didn't know at the time that my supposed death had been staged by Layla who paid guards to help me disappear."

She continued while describing her years in hiding, raising Golden alone while constantly looking over her shoulder. She talked about the fear of being found, the struggle to survive in a fishing village with no support system besides Fatima who turned out to be another of Layla's paid informants.

"Then my son was taken from me," Cecelia said while her voice broke slightly. "Three years old and scared while these people did terrible things to him trying to steal his magic. The doctor says Golden will need years of treatment to prevent the premature wolf emergence from killing him. All because Layla wanted power she thought would make the Alpha love her."

The council listened while several members looked visibly moved by her testimony. Cecelia's pain was obvious while she described searching frantically for Golden, the terror of not knowing if he was alive or dead.

"Layla didn't just hurt me," Cecelia finished. "She hurt an innocent child who never did anything except be born to the wrong parents. That kind of cruelty deserves the harshest punishment possible."

"Thank you," the councilman said while Cecelia returned to sit beside me.

I took her hand while squeezing gently. Through our bond I sent her support and pride while her testimony had been powerful.

"The council will now deliberate on sentencing," the councilman announced. "Given the severity of the crimes, we must consider all options including execution."

"Wait," I said while standing again. "There's the matter of Cameron to consider."

"The child thought to be yours?" another council member asked.

"Yes," I confirmed. "DNA testing proved Cameron is not my biological son. His father is a man named Robert who was kept away from the child by Layla's deception."

"What is your recommendation regarding the child?" the councilman asked.

"Cameron is innocent in all of this," I said while making sure everyone heard. "He shouldn't suffer because of his mother's crimes. I recommend he be placed with his biological father Robert who has expressed desire to raise him."

"And if the defendant is executed, what then?" another council member asked.

"Then Robert becomes Cameron's sole parent," I said. "The child deserves a chance at a normal life away from all this."

The council deliberated while Layla sat with her head down. After twenty minutes they returned with their decision.

"The council has voted," the head councilman announced. "Given the testimony and evidence presented, and considering the wellbeing of the minor child Cameron, we sentence Layla Winters to permanent banishment from this pack and all allied territories."

Layla's head snapped up while surprise crossed her face. She'd expected execution while banishment was more merciful than she deserved.

"You will never contact Alpha Zeke, Cecelia Blackwood, or the child Golden," the councilman continued. "Any attempt to do so will result in immediate execution. Cameron will be released to his biological father Robert's custody following DNA confirmation. You have twenty four hours to gather personal belongings before your banishment begins."

"Thank you," Layla whispered while tears streamed down her face.

"Don't thank us," the councilman said coldly. "Thank the Alpha for arguing against execution because of your innocent son. Now get her out of my sight."

Guards escorted Layla away while she looked back once at me with something like regret. But I felt nothing while any feelings I'd had for her as a friend had died the moment she threatened my son.

"Now for the matter of Theseus and the Brooke Pack," the councilman said while turning to new business.

A delegation from the Brooke Pack had been waiting outside while they filed in looking nervous. Their head diplomat stepped forward while bowing respectfully.

"Alpha Zeke, the Brooke Pack wishes to express our deepest apologies for Theseus's actions," he said formally. "We had no knowledge of his involvement in this kidnapping and do not condone his crimes."

"Yet he used pack resources to house the victim and provide support to the kidnappers," I said while keeping my voice level. "That reflects poorly on your pack's oversight."

"We take full responsibility for our Alpha's failures," the diplomat said. "Which is why we come bearing an offer. Theseus has been stripped of his position and banished from our pack. We are prepared to turn him over to you for prosecution."

"In exchange for?" I asked while knowing they wanted something.

"Peace between our packs," the diplomat said. "We offer reparations to be paid to Cecelia Blackwood and her son for their trauma. We also propose a formal treaty to prevent future conflicts between our territories."

I looked at Cecelia while she nodded slightly. Through our bond I felt her agreement that this was the best solution.

"How much in reparations?" I asked.

"Five million dollars," the diplomat said. "To be paid immediately to Cecelia and Golden for their medical expenses and suffering."

"And the treaty terms?" I pressed.

"Free trade between our territories, joint border patrols, and severe penalties for any pack member who commits crimes against the other pack," the diplomat listed. "We want peace Alpha Zeke. What Theseus did was unconscionable while we hope to make amends."

I pretended to consider while I'd already decided to accept. War between packs was costly and bloody while this solution gave us justice without more death.

"Agreed," I said while the diplomat looked relieved. "Turn over Theseus, pay the reparations, and sign the treaty. Then we'll have peace."

"Thank you Alpha," the diplomat said while bowing again. "Theseus was captured trying to flee to neutral territory. He's being held at our border waiting for your warriors to retrieve him."

"Marcus, send a team immediately," I ordered.

"Already on their way," Marcus confirmed.

The diplomatic negotiations continued for another hour while lawyers worked out the specific treaty language. Cecelia signed where needed while accepting the reparations on behalf of herself and Golden. The money would be put in trust for Golden's future while ensuring he'd be provided for no matter what happened.

Finally it was done while papers were signed and hands were shaken. The Brooke Pack delegation left promising the reparations would be transferred within forty eight hours.

"Well handled," the head councilman said to me once the room cleared. "War would have been costly for both sides."

"I'm glad it didn't come to that," I admitted. "Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to my family."

Back at the hospital, I found Cecelia and Golden both napping while she'd climbed into the hospital bed beside our son. They looked peaceful together while I just stood in the doorway watching them for a minute.

Chapter 48

Cecelia's POV

The hospital corridor felt too bright while I pushed Golden's wheelchair toward the visitor room where Layla waited to say goodbye to Cameron. Golden sat quietly wrapped in a blanket while his small hands gripped the armrests. He was finally strong enough to be out of bed for short periods which the doctor said was good progress.

"Why are we going to see her?" Golden asked while looking up at me with those big eyes that reminded me so much of Zeke.

"Because she needs to say goodbye to her son," I explained while keeping my voice gentle. "And Daddy thought it might help you understand what happened if you see that even bad people have families they care about."

Zeke walked beside us while his hand rested on my shoulder. I could feel his tension through the bond while he wasn't happy about this visit either but had agreed it was necessary for Cameron's sake.

We entered the room while Layla sat in a chair with two guards standing nearby. She looked smaller than I remembered while her face was pale without makeup. When she saw us her eyes went immediately to Golden while tears started falling.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered while looking at my son. "I never wanted to hurt you."

"Don't talk to him," I said sharply while positioning the wheelchair so I stood between her and Golden. "You don't get to apologize to my child."

The door opened again while a small boy walked in holding a guard's hand. Cameron looked around the room confused while his eyes found his mother.

"Mommy?" Cameron said while his voice was uncertain.

"Come here baby," Layla said while opening her arms.

Cameron ran to her while Layla grabbed him in a tight hug. She buried her face in his hair while her shoulders shook with sobs. I felt uncomfortable watching this because despite everything Layla had done she clearly loved her son.

"Why are you crying?" Cameron asked while pulling back to look at his mother's face. "Are you sick?"

"No sweetie, I'm not sick," Layla said while wiping her tears. "But I have to go away for a while."

"Where are you going?" Cameron's face scrunched up with worry.

"Far away," Layla said while struggling to explain. "I did some bad things and now I have to leave as punishment."

"What bad things?" Cameron asked.

"Grown up things you wouldn't understand," Layla said while pulling him close again. "But I need you to know that I love you very much and I'll always be your mommy even when we're apart."

Cameron noticed Golden for the first time while his face lit up with interest. "Who's that?" he asked while pointing.

"That's Golden," Zeke said before Layla could answer. "He's my son."

"Is he my brother?" Cameron asked while looking between us with excitement.

The question made everyone freeze while I saw Layla's face crumble. Zeke knelt down beside Cameron so they were eye level.

"No buddy, Golden isn't your brother," Zeke said gently. "Your father is actually someone else named Robert who you'll be living with now."

"But I thought you were my daddy," Cameron said while confusion filled his small face.

"I thought I was too," Zeke admitted while his voice stayed calm even though I felt his pain through our bond. "But it turns out I was wrong. Robert is your real father and he's excited to take care of you."

Cameron looked at his mother while clearly not understanding what was happening. "I don't know Robert."

"You'll get to know him," Layla said while fresh tears fell. "He's a good man who loves you very much."

The door opened while a tall man walked in nervously. He had the same build from the security footage while his eyes went immediately to Cameron with such longing it hurt to see. This was Robert while Cameron's real father.

Zeke stood while moving to block Robert's path. "You're Robert?"

"Yes Alpha," Robert said while bowing his head respectfully. "Thank you for letting me see my son."

"I want to see proof you can actually care for him," Zeke said while his Alpha authority filled his tone. "Job, housing, references."

Robert pulled out a folder while handing it to Zeke. "I have a construction job lined up in the Riverside territory starting next month. I've rented a three bedroom house with a yard while the lease is already signed. And here are character references from my former Alpha and several pack members who can vouch for me."

Zeke reviewed the documents while I watched his face for reactions. Finally he nodded while handing the folder back.

"This looks acceptable," Zeke said. "But know that if I hear you're not caring for Cameron properly, I'll come for you personally."

"I understand," Robert said while meeting Zeke's eyes. "I know I was a coward before by not claiming my son when he was born. But I want to be his father now while I'll do everything I can to give him a good life."

Layla stood while still holding Cameron's hand. She knelt down in front of him while cupping his face in both hands.

"I love you so much," she said while her voice broke. "I know you don't understand what's happening but I need you to be brave for me. Robert is going to take care of you now and I promise he'll treat you well."

"I don't want you to go," Cameron cried while throwing his arms around her neck.

"I know baby, I don't want to go either," Layla sobbed while holding him tight. "But sometimes grown ups have to face consequences for their choices. Just remember that mommy loves you no matter how far apart we are."

She finally released him while Robert moved forward cautiously. He knelt beside Cameron while giving him a gentle smile.

"Hi Cameron," Robert said softly. "I know this is scary but I promise we're going to be okay. I got us a house with a big backyard where we can play and I'll teach you how to build things."

Cameron looked between his mother and this stranger who claimed to be his father. Finally he nodded slowly while wiping his tears.

"Okay," Cameron whispered.

Robert picked him up while Cameron buried his face in his shoulder. Layla watched them while more tears streamed down her face. I felt complicated emotions watching this because Cameron was innocent while he didn't deserve to have his whole world turned upside down because of his mother's crimes.

But at the same time I couldn't find much sympathy for Layla while she'd brought this on herself. She'd chosen to kidnap my son, to fake my death, to manipulate everyone around her. Now she had to face the consequences while losing her child was part of that price.

"Say goodbye to your mother," Robert said gently to Cameron.

"Bye mommy," Cameron said while his voice was small and sad.

"Goodbye baby," Layla whispered. "I love you."

Robert carried Cameron toward the door while the boy looked back at his mother one last time. Then they were gone while Layla collapsed back into her chair sobbing. The guards moved forward to escort her out.

"Wait," Golden's small voice spoke up for the first time. "Why is she crying so much?"

I knelt beside his wheelchair while choosing my words carefully. "Because she has to leave her son behind and that makes her very sad."

"Like how I was sad when those people took me away from you?" Golden asked.

"Yes," I said while my throat got tight. "Exactly like that."

"I'm glad you found me," Golden said while reaching for my hand. "I don't want to be away from you ever again."

"You won't be," I promised while squeezing his small hand. "I'm never letting you go."

Zeke moved to stand behind us while his hands rested on both our shoulders. Through the bond I felt his love and determination while we were finally a complete family despite everything that had tried to tear us apart.

The guards led Layla away while she looked back at us one last time. I met her eyes while feeling nothing but cold satisfaction. She'd lost everything while we'd gained what mattered most. Justice had been served in the way that hurt her most while taking away the child she loved.

Maybe that made me a bad person but I couldn't bring myself to care while she'd tried to take my child first.

Chapter 49

Cecelia's POV

Golden had been asleep for an hour while Zeke knocked softly on our bedroom door. I'd been reading in the chair beside Golden's small bed watching him breathe peacefully when Zeke poked his head in.

"Come with me," he whispered while gesturing toward the hallway. "I have something planned."

I stood carefully while not wanting to wake Golden. He'd had a good day today, his color was better while the blue light under his skin had barely flickered at all. The doctor said the Alpha essence treatments were working while Golden's body was stabilizing.

Zeke took my hand while leading me through our quarters to the private balcony I hadn't used much since moving back in. When he opened the door my breath caught because the space had been transformed.

Candles covered every surface while their warm glow made everything look soft. A small table was set with real plates and silverware while covered dishes sat waiting. A bottle of wine was already open while two glasses sat beside it.

"You did all this?" I asked while turning to look at him.

"I wanted to do something nice for you," Zeke said while looking almost nervous. "We haven't had a real date since you came back and I thought maybe we could talk without doctors and guards and everything else getting in the way."

My chest felt warm while I stepped onto the balcony. "It's perfect."

Zeke pulled out my chair while I sat down. He took the seat across from me while pouring wine into both glasses. The night air was cool but not cold while stars were starting to appear in the darkening sky.

"I don't even know what we're eating," I admitted while lifting the cover off my plate.

"Chicken with that sauce you used to like," Zeke said while watching my face. "And roasted vegetables because you always said they were your favorite."

He'd remembered while that detail from three years ago had stayed with him. I took a bite while the food was still warm and tasted exactly like I remembered from our early marriage when Zeke would sometimes cook for me.

"This is really good," I said while taking another bite.

"I've been practicing," Zeke admitted while starting on his own food. "Cooking helped me feel connected to you while you were gone so I got pretty good at it."

We ate in comfortable silence for a few minutes while I watched him across the table. The candlelight made shadows dance across his face while softening the hard edges he usually carried as Alpha. He looked younger like this while more like the man I'd fallen for during those first few months of marriage.

"Tell me something," Zeke said while setting down his fork. "What was your favorite part about living in Seacreek?"

I thought about it while sipping my wine. "The simplicity I guess. No pack politics or expectations or people watching my every move. Just me and Golden living a quiet life by the ocean."

"Do you miss it?" he asked while his expression was careful.

"Sometimes," I admitted honestly. "But not enough to want to go back. Everything important to me is here now."

Something shifted in his face while relief replaced the worry. "Good because I don't think I could survive you leaving again."

"I'm not leaving," I promised while reaching across the table.

He took my hand while his thumb rubbed circles on my palm. "I want to do this right Cecelia. I want to rebuild what we had but better this time because I'm not scared anymore."

"What were you scared of before?" I asked even though I thought I knew the answer.

"Everything," Zeke said while his voice went quiet. "Scared of feeling too much, scared of being vulnerable, scared that if I let myself love you completely it would somehow dishonor Layla's memory."

"And now?" I prompted while squeezing his hand.

"Now I know that loving you doesn't take anything away from what Layla and I had," he said while meeting my eyes. "It's just different. What I felt for Layla was comfortable and expected while what I feel for you is wild and intense and terrifying in the best way."

My throat got tight while hearing him say that out loud. "I feel the same way about you."

We stared at each other while the bond between us hummed stronger. The air felt charged while I could see desire building in his eyes. We'd been living together for weeks, sleeping in the same bed, being close constantly while caring for Golden. But we hadn't crossed that line yet because everything had been focused on our son's recovery.

Now Golden was stable while we finally had space to think about us again.

"I want you," Zeke said while his voice dropped lower. "I've wanted you since the moment you walked back into my life but the timing was never right."

"The timing is right now," I said while standing up from my chair.

Zeke was on his feet immediately while moving around the table to reach me. His hands cupped my face while his eyes searched mine for any hesitation. Finding none, he kissed me hard while all the restraint we'd been showing for weeks finally broke.

I kissed him back while my hands fisted in his shirt. The bond exploded between us singing with approval while we stumbled back toward the door. We made it inside while Zeke kicked the door closed behind us without breaking the kiss.

His hands were everywhere while pulling at my clothes. I worked on his shirt buttons while my fingers fumbled because I couldn't focus on anything except the feel of his mouth on mine. We left a trail of clothes across the floor while making our way to the bed.

When we finally fell onto the mattress together, skin against skin, I felt like I could breathe properly for the first time in three years. This was what had been missing while this connection that went deeper than just physical.

"I forgot," Zeke breathed against my neck while his hands explored like he was memorizing me all over again. "I forgot how perfect you feel."

I couldn't form words while just pulled him closer. The bond between us pulsed hot and bright while weaving us back together in ways that went beyond the physical. Every touch, every kiss, every shared breath rebuilt what had been broken.

Later we lay tangled together while both of us breathing hard. Zeke's arm was around me while my head rested on his chest listening to his heartbeat slow back to normal.

"I missed this," I admitted quietly. "Not just the physical part but this. Being close to you without walls between us."

"The physical part was never our problem," Zeke agreed while his hand traced patterns on my back. "We always connected like this even when everything else was falling apart."

"What was our problem then?" I asked even though I knew.

"I was," Zeke said simply. "I was so busy protecting myself that I didn't see I was hurting you. But I'm done running from what scares me Cecelia. I'm all in this time."

I tilted my head up to look at him while seeing nothing but sincerity in his face. "Promise?"

"I promise," he said while sealing it with a kiss.

We fell asleep like that while wrapped around each other. When I woke later Golden was calling from his room. Zeke and I both got up while pulling on clothes quickly. We found Golden sitting up in bed looking confused.

"I had a bad dream," Golden said while his bottom lip trembled.

I climbed into bed beside him while pulling him into my arms. "It's okay baby, dreams can't hurt you."

"What if the bad people come back?" Golden asked while burrowing against my chest.

"They can't come back," Zeke said while sitting on the other side of the bed. "They're all gone now where they can never hurt you again."

"Promise?" Golden asked while looking between us.

"Promise," we both said at the same time.

Golden relaxed while clearly believing us. "Can I sleep with you guys tonight?"

Zeke and I exchanged glances while we'd been trying to get Golden comfortable in his own room. But seeing the fear in his eyes made the decision easy.

"Of course you can," I said while standing up with him still in my arms.

We all climbed into the big bed while Golden settled between us. He fell asleep quickly while feeling safe with both his parents on either side. Zeke's hand found mine across Golden's small body while our fingers laced together over our son. Through the bond I felt contentment from Zeke while this simple moment of all three of us together was everything he'd wanted.

The next evening after Golden was settled with a book and one of the guards watching him, Zeke led me back to the balcony. The night was warmer than yesterday while a gentle breeze came off the distant mountains. We sat side by side on the outdoor couch while Zeke pulled me against him.

"I've been thinking," he started while his arm came around my shoulders. "About us and what comes next."

"What comes next?" I repeated while looking up at him.

"I want to make this official," Zeke said while turning to face me more fully. "Not like before when we were forced together for politics. I want a real mating ceremony where we choose each other because we want to, not because we have to."

My heart started beating faster while I processed what he was asking. "You want to have another ceremony?"

"The first one didn't count," Zeke said while his hand came up to cup my face. "That was duty and obligation while everyone watched us go through motions we didn't really feel. This time I want it to be real, just us choosing each other in front of the people we care about."

"When?" I asked while already knowing my answer would be yes.

"Three months from now," Zeke suggested. "That gives Golden time to adjust to all the changes while also giving us time to make sure we're solid before making it permanent."

"We're already permanent," I pointed out while gesturing between us. "The bond rebuilt itself whether we wanted it to or not."

"I know," Zeke agreed. "But the ceremony would be for us, to mark this as a new beginning instead of trying to fix what broke before."

I thought about it while three months felt right. Not so long that we'd be waiting forever but long enough to prove this wasn't just emotion from the crisis we'd been through.

"Okay," I said while a smile spreading across my face. "Let's do it. A real mating ceremony where we actually mean the vows we say."

Zeke's expression lit up while he pulled me into a kiss that made my toes curl. When we broke apart we were both breathing hard while the bond hummed approval between us.

"There's more," Zeke said while settling me back against his chest. "I want to formally adopt Golden as my legal son, not just through the bond but through pack law. And I want you to be Luna again officially, through a pack vote where they choose you instead of you just being my mate by default."

"You think they'd vote for me?" I asked while uncertainty crept in. "I abandoned the Luna position for three years."

"You didn't abandon it, you were driven away," Zeke corrected firmly. "And yes, I know they'd vote for you because I've heard how pack members talk about you. They respect what you survived while they're grateful you came back."

The idea of being Luna again felt both scary and right while I'd never really gotten to do the job properly during our first marriage. "What would that involve?"

"Pack meetings, charity work, being the face of female leadership in the pack," Zeke explained. "Basically everything you should have been doing before but I was too stupid to include you in."

"I could do that," I said while warming to the idea. "I'd like to do that actually, to have a real role instead of just being the Alpha's wife."

"Good," Zeke said while pressing a kiss to the top of my head. "Because you'd be amazing at it."

Chapter 50

CECELIA'S POV

We sat in comfortable silence while I processed everything. A real mating ceremony, becoming Luna officially, raising Golden together as a family. Three months ago this would have seemed impossible while now it felt inevitable like this was always where we were meant to end up.

"I want more children," I said suddenly while the thought had been building for a while. "Not right away but someday. Golden should have siblings."

Zeke's arm tightened around me while through the bond I felt his immediate agreement. "How many are we talking?"

"Two or three more maybe?" I suggested while tilting my head to look at him. "Enough that Golden isn't lonely but not so many that we're completely overwhelmed."

"I like that," Zeke said while his hand moved to rest on my stomach like he could already picture me pregnant. "Golden would be a good big brother."

"He would," I agreed while imagining our son helping with a baby. "Though we should probably wait until his wolf emergence situation is more stable before adding another child to the mix."

"Agreed," Zeke said. "But knowing we're planning for it, that we're building a future together, that means everything to me."

We talked late into the night while planning details that felt both exciting and terrifying. Where we'd live long term, how we'd handle pack politics together, what kind of education we wanted for Golden. The conversation flowed easily while we were finally on the same page about everything.

"I love you," I said when we finally headed inside. "I know I've been holding back from saying it but I do. I love you Zeke."

"I love you too," Zeke replied while stopping to pull me close. "I never stopped loving you even when I was too scared to admit it."

We made love again that night while slower and more tender than before. Every touch was a promise while every kiss sealed our commitment to making this work. When we fell asleep wrapped around each other, the bond between us hummed with complete contentment.

Three months passed faster than I expected while life settled into a comfortable routine. Golden's health improved daily while the doctor said the premature emergence was fully suppressed. He'd need monitoring as he grew but the crisis had passed.

Golden adjusted to pack life surprisingly well while making friends at the pack school. He loved having a father while following Zeke around whenever possible asking endless questions. Watching them bond made my heart full while this was what Golden had always deserved.

I took on more Luna duties while finding I actually enjoyed the work. Planning pack events, visiting families who needed support, being involved in decisions that affected our people. The pack members welcomed me warmly while many apologized for not seeing through Layla's manipulations years ago.

Zeke and I grew stronger together while learning how to actually communicate instead of assuming what the other needed. We had disagreements sometimes but we talked through them instead of letting them fester. The bond between us deepened while becoming unshakeable.

Now the morning of our mating ceremony had arrived while I woke with butterflies dancing in my stomach. Unlike three years ago when I'd been scared and uncertain about marrying a man who barely looked at me, today I felt only joy and peace.

Zeke's arms tightened around me from behind while his face pressed into my neck. "Good morning," he murmured while his voice was still rough from sleep.

"Good morning," I replied while turning in his arms so I could see his face.

We lay there for a moment while just looking at each other. Zeke's hair was messy from sleep while his eyes were soft in a way they never used to be. He'd changed so much in three months while becoming the man I'd always known he could be when he let his walls down.

"Nervous?" he asked while his hand came up to cup my cheek.

"Not even a little bit," I admitted while meaning it completely. "Are you?"

"No," Zeke said while a smile crossed his face. "I know exactly what I'm choosing while there's no doubt in my mind that you're it for me."

"Good," I said while leaning in to kiss him softly. "Because you're it for me too."

We kissed slowly while savoring these last moments before the chaos of ceremony preparations would pull us apart. Golden was sleeping in his own room now while he'd finally gotten comfortable there after weeks of transition. The silence in our room felt peaceful while I could hear Zeke's heartbeat under my palm where my hand rested on his chest.

"Today you become my mate by choice," Zeke said while pulling back to look at me seriously. "Not because of duty or politics or peace treaties. Just because we want each other."

"I choose you," I said while holding his gaze. "I choose us, I choose this family we're building. I choose all of it freely."

"So do I," Zeke replied while his voice was thick with emotion. "Every day for the rest of my life I choose you."

The bond between us flared bright while sealing our private vows to each other before we'd even made the public ones. This moment felt more significant than any ceremony while it was just us promising to love each other without fear or reservation.

A knock on the door interrupted while Golden's voice called out asking if he could come in. We both laughed while pulling apart to get dressed quickly.

"Come in buddy," Zeke called while pulling on pants.

Golden burst through the door while already dressed in the small suit we'd gotten him for the ceremony. His curly hair was combed neat while his face showed pure excitement.

"Is it time yet?" Golden asked while bouncing on his toes. "Can we go do the ceremony now?"

"Not yet," I said while scooping him up. "We have to get ready first while all the guests arrive."

"But I'm already ready," Golden protested while gesturing at his suit.

"You look very handsome," Zeke said while ruffling Golden's hair. "But mama and I need time to get ready too."

"Why does getting ready take so long?" Golden asked while his face scrunched up with confusion.

"Because grown ups are complicated," I explained while setting him down. "Now go have breakfast with Marcus while we get ready. We'll come get you when it's time."

Golden ran off while his excitement was contagious. Zeke pulled me back into his arms while we stood there swaying slightly to music only we could hear.

"This is really happening," I said while resting my head on his chest.

"This is really happening," Zeke confirmed while his arms tightened around me. "And I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you."

We stood there holding each other while the morning light grew brighter through the windows. In a few hours we'd stand before the pack while saying vows that actually meant something this time. We'd promise to love and cherish while meaning every word instead of just going through motions.

But right now in this quiet moment, it was just us while the bond hummed contentedly between us. We'd been through so much to get here while the journey had nearly destroyed us both. But we'd survived while we'd found our way back to each other despite everything trying to keep us apart.

"I love you," I whispered while knowing those words would never get old.

"I love you too," Zeke replied while tilting my chin up for one more kiss. "Now and always.”

A few hours later, my quarters filled with female pack members who'd come to help me prepare. Unlike three years ago when I'd gotten ready alone in a cold room with servants I barely knew, today felt warm and welcoming.

Marcus's mate Elena was there along with several other high ranking females who'd welcomed me back warmly over the past three months. They chatted while helping me into my dress, doing my hair, making sure everything was perfect.

"You look beautiful," Elena said while stepping back to admire her work. "Zeke won't be able to take his eyes off you."

I looked at myself in the mirror while barely recognizing the woman staring back. My dress was simple but elegant in cream silk while I'd chosen something that felt meaningful rather than elaborate. My hair was styled in loose waves while minimal makeup let my natural features show through.

"How do you feel?" one of the other females asked while adjusting my dress.

"Happy," I said while meaning it completely. "Three years ago I was terrified walking down the aisle to marry someone who didn't want me. Today I'm excited to choose the man I love."

The females smiled while clearly pleased by my answer. A knock on the door brought Golden bursting in while his face lit up when he saw me.

"Mama, you look like a princess," Golden exclaimed while running over to hug my legs.

"Thank you baby," I said while kneeling down carefully so I wouldn't wrinkle my dress. "Are you ready to walk me down to daddy?"

"Yes," Golden said while bouncing with excitement. "I get to give you away like in the stories."

"That's right," I confirmed while taking his small hand. "You're going to escort me through the grove to where daddy is waiting."

The females left ahead of us while giving me a moment alone with Golden. I looked down at my son while marveling at how much had changed in three months. He was healthy now, happy, thriving with both his parents in his life.

"I love you mama," Golden said while looking up at me with those big eyes.

"I love you too baby," I replied while my throat getting tight with emotion. "So much."

We walked out of the quarters together while Golden held my hand proudly. The path to the sacred grove was lined with pack members who smiled and nodded as we passed. Unlike the large political affair my first wedding had been, today's ceremony included only close friends and important pack members while intimacy was prioritized over spectacle.

The sacred grove appeared ahead while ancient trees formed a natural cathedral. Sunlight filtered through the leaves while creating patterns on the ground. I could see Zeke waiting at the altar with Marcus beside him while both men wore formal suits.

Golden squeezed my hand while we started down the path through the grove. Pack members stood on either side while their faces showing genuine happiness for us. This felt so different from before when I'd walked alone through hostile faces while wondering if I was making a terrible mistake.

Zeke's expression when he saw me approaching made my breath catch. The raw love and wonder on his face left no doubt about his feelings while the bond between us swelled with emotion. He looked at me like I was the only person in the world while everything else faded away.

We reached the altar while Golden seriously announced he was giving mama to daddy. Zeke scooped Golden up briefly before setting him with Marcus to watch. Then he took both my hands in his while we stood facing each other.

The pack elder who would perform the ceremony smiled at us warmly. "We gather today to witness the mating of Alpha Zeke and Cecelia Blackwood," he began. "This is not their first ceremony together but it is their first true one where both parties choose freely from the heart."

Murmurs of agreement went through the assembled pack while everyone knew our complicated history.

"Alpha Zeke," the elder continued. "Do you take Cecelia as your mate, your partner, your equal? Do you promise to cherish her, protect your family together, and choose her above all others for the rest of your days?"

Zeke's eyes never left mine while he spoke his vows. "I do," he said while his voice was strong and clear. "Three years ago I spoke these words without meaning them fully. Today I mean every single one. Cecelia, I promise to cherish you and choose you every single day. I promise to be the mate and father our family deserves. I promise to love you with everything I am for the rest of my life."

Tears streamed down my face while I felt the sincerity of his words through our bond. This was nothing like our first ceremony where he'd spoken coldly while barely looking at me.

"Cecelia," the elder turned to me. "Do you take Zeke as your mate, your partner, your equal? Do you promise to love him, build your future together, and stand beside him through whatever comes?"

"I do," I said while my voice thick with emotion. "I choose you Zeke, freely and completely. I promise to trust you with my heart, to build our family together, and to love you through everything. You are my mate, my partner, and my forever."

The elder smiled while placing his hands over our joined ones. "Then by the power granted to me and witnessed by this pack, I pronounce you officially mated. May your bond be strong, your love be deep, and your family be blessed."

"You may kiss your mate," he added while stepping back.

Zeke pulled me close while his hands cupped my face. "I love you," he whispered before pressing his lips to mine.

The kiss started gentle while quickly deepening as three years of separation and pain were replaced with reunion and hope. The bond between us exploded with light while weaving us together in ways that went beyond the physical. I felt his love, his commitment, his determination to make this work flooding through our connection.

The pack erupted in cheers while we broke apart both breathing hard. Zeke rested his forehead against mine while we just stood there wrapped in each other while the rest of the world faded away.

"We did it," I whispered.

"We did," Zeke agreed while his thumb wiping away my happy tears. "This time forever means forever."

Golden ran up while throwing his arms around both our legs. "Are we a real family now?"

"We were always a real family," Zeke said while scooping our son up so he was between us. "But now it's official."

Golden beamed while wrapping his arms around both our necks to pull us into a group hug. The three of us stood there in the sacred grove while pack members clapped and cheered around us. Through the bond I felt Zeke's complete contentment while this moment was everything he'd dreamed of during our separation.

This was my family while broken and healed and finally complete. We'd survived betrayal, separation, kidnapping, and nearly losing each other for good. But we'd fought our way back while proving that some bonds were strong enough to survive anything.

As we walked back down the path together with Golden between us holding both our hands, I looked at my mate and our son while knowing this was just the beginning. We had a lifetime ahead of us to build memories, raise our family, and love each other the way we should have from the start.

The bond hummed contentedly between Zeke and me while the future stretched bright and certain ahead of us. We'd found our way home to each other while this time nothing would tear us apart again.

Forever started now.
