Chapter 40
Claire….Claire….Claire. A whimper fell out of her. What happens when he comes to know she is not ClaireKnights but Sapphire Taylor, the NIA officer who trapped him in the name of love and came to arrest him on charges of delinquency and unlawful pursuits against the interest of the nation.
She looked besides and his eyes were closed, hands protectively wrapped around her. He looked so peaceful when he was sleeping, the hair falling on his face gave him a teenage boy look.
Sapphire wanted to brush away the hair falling on his face but resisted the urge for she would probably wake him. He looked so handsome, sexy and charismatic like a walking out model from a fashion magazine.
If been given a time she could watch him sleep all the day and night forgetting there existed a world around them. Gingerly she brought down his hand from around her waist and went out of the bed because she couldn't stop the urge to pee.
By the time she came back he was already awake, sitting on the bed and putting on his shirt.
He observed the way she was walking, adjusting the collar of his tee and a worried look flashed in his eyes. "Does it pain you so much?"
His voice was rough, very masculine and husky, sending chills of sensuality down her spine. If she could, she would hide him from the world in her blanket so that no woman could look at him. Yes she is jealous and too possessive about him. Her eyes scrawled down to his pants, to be exact between his legs and bit her tongue.
Damn! Your thoughts are always in the gutter now Sapphire. When did you start having interest in carnal pleasures? You just had sex with the country's biggest criminal who you are supposed to get handcuffed. To top it all you have least repentance and still have bonking thoughts about him. You have lost all your shame and professionalism with what you did moments ago. What are you going to say to your dad?
"Are you okay?" He held her hand trying to read her eyes when she did not respond.
Sapphire couldn't lie to him. He could see everything through her walking style. She only shook her head.
"Shit! There was a pained expression on his features and he rubbed the top of his eyebrows in unease. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have done this to you. I know girls like you are religious and spiritual. Believe me, I had no intention of hurting your feelings. I wanted to consummate only after our wedding. But I do not know what came to me. Maybe it was because of happiness that we are engaged. I couldn't hold back and I had to make love to you."
Sapphire hissed and dragged her feet to him. "Shh, do not talk like that." She laid a finger on his lips. "You did not force me into this. I did because I wanted to do it. I do not go commanded by anyone. I am a woman with a lot of self ego. So stop blaming yourself."
He raised his brows in eagerness. "What happened to my darling Claire all of a sudden….saying words of a powerful ruler?"
Sapphire huffed. Little did he know it was the first time she expressed something true about her personality but he wouldn't believe her because the girl she enacts and the actual girl she is are entirely opposites.
He pulled her to the bed beside him and circled his arm around her shoulder bringing her closer and kissed her forehead. "Still it is my fault. I shouldn't have made you uncomfortable especially when my parents are shortly going to arrive here." He looked down at her legs in culpability.
"It pains you so much. Isn't it?" Sapphire saw love, pain and an endless affection for her in his eyes. She recollected the words of a poet she once read in her school - the strongest feelings of a person are actually expressed through eyes not lips, speech has no say in it.
"Not as much as you are feeling for me." She smiled and kissed his cheek cupping his other with her hand.
"You don't have to walk. Sit on a chair and host them, all the remaining things, I will manage. Okay?" He held her chin and asked like he was speaking to a child.
Sapphire nodded. Could she ever deny this man who loves her to the moon and back and run away from his home?
He walked to her closet and took out a silver satin dress which he had bought for her a month after she started living with him. It had a high neck and long sleeves reaching half way below her knees to the ankle.
He placed the dress on top of her before he complimented. "This is perfect."
Just then the phone rang in his pants pockets followed by the calling bell. He checked the message. "They are here. You can take your time to get ready and find me in the sitting room." He patted her cheeks with the tip of his fingers and kissed her forehead before he walked out the room shutting the door behind him softly.
By the time Sapphire was ready with matching ear tops, bracelet and sandals and a little touch-up on her face, she could hear loud chuckles from the front hall.
She did a final check on her by looking at her reflection in the mirror when a question popped up in her mind. Why the hell should she think of impressing his parents? Once her task is finished she wouldn't even show her face to him.
Tomorrow, she will go to his office to find out any clues there. Most probably she would get them because even though she checked each wall, door and window of his house she couldn't find a single hint of his illegal earnings or mafia deals.
When her white pencils heels clicked the wooden floor, the conversation of the guests halted and they looked towards her. Each one of them having a unique expression with several questions turning up in their head that she could literally see from their eyes.
Sapphire was not used to grabbing so much attention. She bit the inside of her cheek in restlessness.
Carl walked to the foot of the staircase and held her hand. His eyes shot up to her face in questioning. Her hands were super cold like they were just taken out from the freezer.
"There is nothing to worry about. My parents are extremely hospitable and once you become acquainted with my sister, I can claim from the moment she will be your best friend. Come on, take a deep breath and walk with me. I will introduce you to them." He whispered softly to her before reaching her arm.
"Hey guys, I'm sorry I kept this news from you. I wanted to share everything once our relationship is confirmed. This is Claire, Claire Knights, my fiance." Carlannounced knotting his fingers with hers and introduced each member of his family her.
Every person sitting there had a million expressions on their features but one of them was common in all. Flabbergasted. Probably they did not think Carl would move on so early in his life after the death of Stephanie.
Sapphire did not know whether she should think positive or negative of it. Positive because she could ignite a hope of life in an almost dying man and negative because this all appeared so surreal to her as if it was only a dream because the moment she closes this assignment she is never going to meet these people again.
"Ooh hoo!" Sejal ran hugging Sapphire. "So you are my soon to be sister." She then looked at her brother complaining. "I tell you everything about my life but you are too secretive big bro. You hid Claire from all of us all this while."
Carl scratched the back of his head and his face turned red. Was he blushing? Could a man ever blush? Sapphire was bewildered.
"I'm Elizabeth, Carl's mom. I know my son just introduced all of us to you but it is difficult to remember all of our names within a few seconds." She held her chin and kissed Sapphire's cheek. "You're beautiful. Thank you for coming into our son's life because after Stephanie's death we all were very worried if we could see him smiling ever again. But you made it possible." Her eyes watered in happiness.
"Congratulations son!" Graham shook hands with Carland Sapphire and Phillip joined him.
Sejal took Sapphire's hand in hers and left her jaw open. "Wow, what a beautiful ring you have got."
Sapphire did not know how to respond to the family's happiness. She kept the smile on her brims but within was burning with guilt. What happens when these people come to know her true identity and the purpose for which she entered Carl's home?
The dinner went between a lot of chatter, fun and hearty gossip. Graham and Elizabeth both were very happy. Their eyes were shining with the illumination of a hundred stars for they had two joyous news to share with the world.
"Why don't we plan both our children's weddings at the same time?" Elizabeth suggested in gaety. Carl coughed with the sudden interjection and Sapphire hurried to bring the water glass to his lips.
Elizabeth smiled to her husband, an unsaid conversation going between them and Graham nodded.
"Mom, give me some time to breathe." He laughed sheepishly and everybody followed in huge laughter with him.
The men went to the smoking room with their wine glasses while the woman started their gossip in the dining room itself after the dinner.
Few minutes later, Carl went to the study to attend an urgent conference call. During the same time Phillip had gone to use the powder room.
After he finished the urgent meeting Carl saw Phillip walking out of Claire's room.
He had specifically told him to use the third room from the left which is the guest room. Why was he using Claire's room?
"Oh I'm sorry man, I might have got confused. I thought it was the third room from the right." He raised his hand up in surrender.
Couldn't he see her clothes and a woman's perfume wafting in the air of the room? He could breathe Claireno sooner he stepped at her entrance. Carl did not like the behavior of Phillip.
His conference call took him more than the expected time, an hour to be honest. Was Phillip there all the time in Claire's bedroom because he came out with him. What was he doing there for so long? Unwelcoming doubts scrolled in Carl's head.
