Chapter 36
“It is good you brought her here on time, Mr Kingsley, you saved her life.
The beatings were severe, and definitely aimed to damage Miss Harnes.
I suggest you report the case to the station immediately.”
“Fortunately, we were able to make her stable.
Your fiancee suffered blunt trauma in her head and legs due to the assaults, four broken ribs and an incomplete ab….”
A masculine voice spoke and I struggled to open my eyes.
The blinding white lights were the first to greet me, making me flinch as I observed where I was.
The monitor beside me beeped steadily, and pain shot all over my body making me groan.
“Leah,” a soft velvety voice called.
I looked in the direction of it as a sad smile tipped up on my face.
There he stood—Xavier, his worried eyes on me, as the doctor who stood beside him walked towards me.
“How do you feel, Miss Harnes?” the doctor asked, making my eyes snap to his.
“What am I doing here?” I asked, my voice sounding cracked and sore startling me at the pain I felt.
“Miss Harnes you suffered an assault and your fiance saved you and brought you here right on time,” the doctor said.
The word ‘assault’ made me flinch as the memories of what happened slammed through me, eliciting a shiver of fear through me.
“You suffered severe trauma in some parts of your body, which have been duly taken care of.
And I’m sorry to say, but unfortunately we could not save your child,” the doctor said, landing the final blow.
My head made a ringing sound, blocking out all the noises.
I saw his lips move but I could not hear a word, as shock took total control over my body.
“Which child?” I asked in shock.
“Unfortunately Miss Harnes but your tests revealed that you were two weeks pregnant.
You suffered an incomplete abortion due to the trauma of the assault, and the child was still too small to hold on, and by the time your fiance brought you to the hospital, you had almost bled out.
Medications have been given to you to help expel the remaining contents from your uterus.
I am so sorry for your loss,” the doctor said sadly.
I laughed at his words, then paused, only to continue laughing, louder this time, until it turned into a full-blown sob.
“I…I was pregnant,” I whispered with tears trailing down my cheeks.
“Yes, you were.
But it’s not your fault for losing the child.
You were attacked, and the fetus could not have handled that much trauma.
And also pregnancy symptoms do not show until at least four weeks of conception.
So it makes sense that you were not aware of your condition,”
The pain came back this time in full force, shooting through all sides of my body, but it still felt less compared to the pain in my chest knowing I lost a child I barely had the chance to know.
The words of the women right before I passed out echoed in my mind.
“Who cares. Maybe she was carrying a spawn from her immoral acts. It’s good we’ll beat it out of her. A woman like her should never have the opportunity of bringing a child into this world.”
My heart clenched in pain as those words rang endlessly in my head. ‘A woman like her should never have the opportunity of bringing a child into this world,’ my chest felt choked up, a sob breaking through my mouth as those words rang again.
The pain felt stabbing, burning through my chest like a volcano making me unable to mutter even a word.
My body trembled all over, making a ragged sob shoot out of my mouth.
Strong hands wrapped around my shoulders as I shook uncontrollably in his hold.
