Silver wolf - Chapter 13

Chapter 13

As Veronica fell to the ground, her vision became blurry, and before she knew what was going on, complete darkness had enveloped her. The last thing she remembered was the sharp pain shooting through her leg after she stumbled and fell, before everything faded to black.

It was very early in the morning when she finally began to regain consciousness, and everywhere around was still a bit dark. A pounding ache pulsed through her head. The air in the cave was musty and thick with the scent of old particles and decay. Slowly, she began to  open her eyes, to find herself in a dimly lit cave. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, and became wide open, she began to look around, wondering where she was and how she got there.

“Where am I?” She asked herself.

As she looked around, she noticed that the walls of the cave were rough and uneven, it was a very old cave. Also, the silence in there was so deafening, it was broken only by the sound of her own ragged breathing.

“Arrggghhhh! My head hurts.” She held her head as the ache in her head persisted.

As she tried to sit up, she realized she was surrounded by skeletal remains, mostly old dry bones and a few fresh ones. The bones laid scattered, haphazardly, across the floor, partially covered in damp soil, moss and dirt.

Seeing this, panic gripped her heart, and she screamed out loudly in horror. Her heart raced as she struggled to stand, with her limbs becoming instantly weak and shaky. She stumbled towards the entrance of the cave, desperate to escape the gruesome scene that surrounded her. But as she reached the mouth of the cave, a cold chill ran through her spine when she saw what was in front of her.

Standing at the entrance of the cave was a large gray wolf. Its blue eyes gleaming with malice. Veronica froze, as it let out a low growl, her eyes widened and her breath caught in her throat as she realized she had not been alone all along.

She took a second look at the cave and soon realized that it must belong to the wolf who was staring at her with its scary eyes, baring its teeth like it was about to attack her.

With slow steps, she retreated back into the cave in fear as she stared at the wolf which was also staring at her. As she retreated back into the cave, the wolf followed her, with slow steps too.

“What do I do now? I'm done for.” She cried in her heart.

As she moved further backwards, she stumbled on a long bone and fell backwards but she was quick to pick herself up. She immediately picked the bone which caused her to fall and held it to defend herself.

The Wolf let out another growl as it saw her holding the bone out to it as she kept using it to ward it off. The more she moved backwards, the closer the wolf came towards her. This kept going on till she felt her back, hitting against the wall, hinting that there was nowhere else to go to.

The Wolf was now a few inches away from where she was standing. It let out a loud growl as it prepared to attack her, but as it was about to claw her face, with one hard strike, she instantly hit it with the bone she was holding. To her shock, it sent it flying to the side, making it hit its back hard against the wall, surprising her because she didn't expect that a piece of dry bone could have so much effect on such a big wolf. The Wolf let out a loud painful growl as it hit the wall and fell down,  giving Veronica the avenue to run out as fast she could and as fast as her legs could carry her, without looking back.

Determined not to stop until she was free from the wolf, she kept running until she got to a crossroad and stopped right in the middle, confused as to where to go from there.

Frustrated and tired from running for a long time, she sat at the stump of a tree,

“Moon goddess, what exactly is my offense? Is it my fault that I was born? Why is it that ever since I have been born, it is from one trouble to the other? It's either I am in trouble or I'm the one causing trouble, where exactly did I go wrong? What should I do again? Cos I have tried my best but nothing seems to be working at all.” She cried bitterly as she spoke.

“And why haven't you killed me yet? If you want to kill me, why are you stalling? I thought I was already about to die the last time but I was shocked when I saw that I was awake again. Does it bring you joy when I suffer? Can't you just take my life in peace?”

“It's really funny that I thought you changed your mind about my fate but you still allowed that weird looking wolf to try to kill me? Why?” She shouted like she was hoping to get answers but the only voice she heard was her voice which was echoing back to her in the forest.

She paused for a while as she remembered something, “I think you were trying to kill me truly but I guess I didn't want to be killed, because if not, why did I run away from that wolf? I should have just stayed back and let it tear me apart and eat my body.” She said to herself.

At that moment, her stomach began to make sounds because she was hungry and she had not eaten anything since she was sent out of the pack. Her eyes scanned round the forest as she thought of where she could go to find food or something suitable for her to eat. Seeing nothing edible within the range of where she was sitting, she decided to ignore the feeling of hunger, hoping that if she didn't think about it, she would not feel hungry anymore.

Shortly after thinking that it worked, the sound in her stomach came again but this time it came with an unbearable pain.

“Urrrrhhhh!” She groaned in pain, holding her stomach as the pain persisted.

As soon as the pain subsided, she got up, determined to find something to eat before she died of hunger in the forest where no one would probably find her.

As she got up and began her journey, she looked at her leg and remembered that she twisted it earlier but surprisingly she couldn't feel any pain anymore. She wondered how it was possible, as she knew she definitely didn't get it treated.

“Well, that's strange.” She said as she hit her leg hard on the ground and felt no pain still. She soon shrugged it off and continued on her journey.

She had not walked too long when she heard a loud rustling in the bushes nearby and she froze immediately.
