Chapter 8
Bile rose up in my throat, at the thought of being indebted to Vivian for life.
But then, what option did I have?
“Yes I agree,” I whispered, my voice trembling as I spoke.
Vivian’s eyes flared with dark promises, as she nodded, seeming pleased with my words.
“Good.
I’ll have my lawyer draft the contract and send them over here immediately,” she said, smiling widely.
My body sagged, as I sank my back against the wall.
The day burnt at the back of my mind till this day.
I blinked my tears away, sniffing as I brought the phone down from my ear.
My heart slammed against my chest, my mind reeling with only one question.
Why did they agree to push mine and Xavier’s marriage forward?
We were supposed to get married in six months.
The only reason the marriage had not happened sooner was because Xavier’s father had tried his best to find a way to destroy the marriage contract made between both families years ago—ever since the Harnes family had lost its wealth.
I wasn’t even the heiress to what little fortune was left—it had all been transferred to Natasha, regardless of the fact that I was the first child of the family.
So why would he agree to the marriage now?
He knew I had been nothing but a beggar living under the goodwill of the Harnes family all my life.
Despite the fact that every single thing they currently owned belonged to me and my mother.
I breathed in, struggling to wash away those thoughts and focus on the present.
Why Xavier’s father would finally agree to push the marriage date up.
The same marriage that he had been stalling since I turned eighteen.
I blinked away the last of my tears, walking into the
luxurious bathroom.
The hot water did little to cleanse how dirty I actually felt and less to clear the filthy thoughts raging in my mind.
I came out, putting on my wrinkled clothes from the day before.
My gaze landed on the bundle of money on the bed.
There should be at least ten thousand dollars there. It would be stupid to leave it here, knowing any worker might step in and take it assuming it was a tip.
My mother’s daily medical care was growing, and my salary barely covered it anymore.
The Harnes family only paid for her treatment and her stay at the hospital as part of our contract.
But her drugs, emergency medical expenses and other urgent bills when her condition spikes up in urgency all fell on me.
And recently, her condition has been getting worse.
That’s what happens when you have been living with a brain tumor for three years.
My desperation for funds won over my pride.
I swiped the cash and dumped it in my bag. I moved, slipping on my shoe, and left the hotel without looking back. But then, my body felt dirtier than ever.
—————
“Ohh good your daughter-in-law is here,” my stepmother’s overly enthusiastic voice came, making me halt in my tracks.
My eyes took in her face, stretched with a fake smile that looked like it might burst any moment.
My gaze swept over her form, landing on her hands clenched beside herself in rage.
She must so badly want to hit me now, I just know it.
After all she took pride in marking my skin ever since I was a child.
And today I disobeyed her by not being home earlier after her call.
I made a stop at the hospital to check on my mother when I left the hotel.
“Where have you been Leah? Your mother said you have not been home since last night,” Xavier’s refined voice echoed in the room.
His eyes shone with fake concern.
The expression on his face, would have sent butterflies down my belly until yesterday.
But now, it made my heart blaze with rage.
I was angry at how much I used to worship him in the past.
How blind I was for not seeing through his facade of love.
How stupid I was for accepting the bare minimum he gave me.
“You seem worried about me Xavier,” I spat with boldness that surprised me.
“I could also ask you the same thing.
Where were you yesterday morning?”
“What do you mean Leah love?
Are you trying to imply something?” He asked, his gaze darting around as if he expected something to pop up.
I could see fear brimming in him, but what confused me was the unfamiliar expression that flickered in his eyes when he looked at his mother.
But he quickly blinked it away, and so did I.
“Yesterday was our anniversary Xavier, and as far as I know.
You had not gone to work throughout the day.
Your assistant informed me personally” I
replied, calmly, pretending like I had no idea about him sleeping with Natasha.
But still, he must have seen the hidden meaning in my words, because his eyes widened in shock.
He definitely would have never expected me to have even a dose of boldness to stand up to him.
More or less questioning his actions.
He knew what I was getting at, but I’ll leave him at the edge, burning with curiosity over whether I had found out about his affair with Natasha or not.
I had sent a text to his assistant earlier yesterday, to make sure he was at home before I went over, since I did not want to alert him of my surprise.
My mind travelled back to all the other times I had always texted him early every morning to ensure he was okay.
Just like the submissive fiancé I was.
But then, he always had high claims of how he was busy, and then ignored me the entire day.
Now that I looked at him, after knowing what a fraud he was—it did not take a guess to know that my messages probably irritated him, so he needed to cut me short.
I called his office earlier in the morning, wanting to know his schedule for the day, and when he’ll be home.
But his secretary informed me that he had not been to work, and he had no plans of coming in—and as stupid as I was.
I was excited thinking maybe he finally remembered our anniversary—although a large part of me knew he didn’t.
He probably had other reasons to stay home.
So I hurried over to his place with the gifts I bought for him.
Wanting to make the love of my life happy with the surprise I planned.
But instead, I had been greeted with a sight that would burn behind my eyes forever.
My fiancé’s dick, buried deep in my stepsister.
What a sight unfit for poor eyes.
“So where did you go, Xavier?”
