Chapter 32
When…when did my mother say that?
“We cannot afford her getting married to an unknown man.
And, I need a way to control her, to watch her.
So, getting married to you is the only way.
If she marries you, she would be completely under our control, we will not need to worry about an outsider trying to take the properties.
And even if she later discovers that her mother gave me the property papers and everything in the Harnes name still belonged to her, it would be too late because she would already be married to you at that time.
Meaning everything belongs to her and you.
You should be grateful to me Xavier,” Vivian said laughing darkly.
I stepped backward, my eyes wide with shock and my mind reeled at what she said.
What does she mean by my mother giving her fake property papers?
My mother lied, or did Vivian lie?
How could they do this?
So I have been living a lie
all along.
I suffered for nothing, sacrificing my future for nothing, thinking I had lost a long time ago, when it all was fake—when everything still remained in my name.
My legs carried me out of the house, my mind struggled to comprehend what had just happened.
I needed to find those papers, and fast. If I did, then I could stop myself from marrying Xavier and ruining my life.
I could also pay for my mother’s bill, without Vivian’s help.
I booked a cab, heading to the one place I knew my mother would have hidden the papers.
Our old house.
I gazed at the decapitated building in front of me.
The walls were peeling, and the paint had already faded and chipped.
This was the house I moved into after finally leaving that godforsaken Harnes mansion at eighteen.
Thankfully, my mother came along.
This was all we could afford.
Vivian had already forced my mother to sign off every single thing to her name, or so we thought.
After my father came back with Vivian, and took everything from my mother, she never rested.
One of the reasons she decided to foolishly remain in that house was to take back her inheritance, it belonged to her father after all.
And she did, she stole them back from the clutches of Vivian and my father.
Taking back seventy percent of her shares, although my father and Vivian still owned the other thirty.
But my mother unfortunately lost everything back to Vivian again, after she forced her to sign it off.
“What are you doing here?” The voice of our old landlord made me recoil.
His bad breath, reeking of alcohol even in the morning sent nausea reeling through me.
“My things along with my mothers are still there.
I came to take a look,” I muttered, shuddering when his slimy hands came to my shoulders.
“You are owing me two months rent, girl.
Pack yours and your dirty mothers things out, and get the hell out of my property.
I don’t know what you kept on here that people keep coming around snooping around my door,” He spat out.
My gaze widened at his words.
“What do you mean people come around here snooping.
Who did? I never sent anybody” I asked in shock.
“Are you saying I am a lying girl?
Or a man like me had no idea what I saw?
I saw those rich folks from down town, dressing in enough money to buy my building,” He muttered in disgust, taking a swing out of the gin he held.
“Please can you describe what they looked like?” I asked hurriedly, wanting to confirm my suspicion.
He eyed me strangely, muttering a word of curses under his stinking breath.
“I’ll buy you a drink, if you can remember how they look,” I bargained, hoping it was enough to bribe him into talking.
I knew him to be a very proud man, but if there was one thing to bring down his pride, it was his beer and alcohol.
His eyes light up, although still watching at me, weary in suspicion.
“She was tall, and slim.
Oh no, not too slim, she was slender, having the body women at her age lack.
She had short bob hair, blonde, almost the color of the sun.
And big brown eyes, enough to drown me with her devil gaze.
She came along with a man.
He was dressed in a corporate suit, definitely not meant for an area like ours.
And that stupid man, he stared at me as if I was dirt, and covered his nose when I spoke as if I had bad breath,” He cursed.
If we were not talking about something so serious I would have laughed at him.
“ The man was tall, and handsome too.
We have had men dressed like in suits peeping around your apartment for a long time.
Heaven knows what you got inside, but this is the first time that that woman and man came here,” he said.
My brain was still unable to comprehend all that has happened today.
“Vivian,” I whispered under my breath.
